Editing 1080p 29.97fps footage in 720p sequence

Title basically says it.  I know there are various ways to solve this but as the video is due I would rather ask and be sure then head down the wrong path.
So the problem is that I shot in 1920 x 1080 at 29.97fps and the customer wants 1280 x 720 in the final video.  There is no preset for 720p 29.97fps in the "New Sequence" menu so I just used the "Digital SLR- DSLR 720p24" preset then under the "Settings" tab, then changed the "Timebase" to 29.97 which also changes "Display Format" accordingly.
I realize I could also edit in 1080p sequence then just export as 1280 x 720 but I want to be able to take advantage of zooming and reframing the 1080p footage in the smaller 720p sequence.
Is this the right way to do it?  Any disadvantages or better ways?
I have shot 1080p 23.976fps quite a few times and it is simple to just create a 720p 23.976 sequence from the preset with no problems as the frame rates match in the footage and the preset.  I just want to make sure I'm accomplishing the same thing.
Thank-you to anyone with some helpful info, my edit is due tomorrow.

Ok thanks.  That's basically what I've done, created a custom sequence and also created a new sequence preset for 720p at 29.97fps.  I have shot in 1080p at 23.976 fps and edited in a 720p sequence several times before, I just didn't realize there was no 720p 30fps or 29.97fps DSLR option or preset.
The 1080p footage seems to be playing fine in the 720p 29.97fps sequence I created so I think I've accomplished my goal.  I will obviously export and have a close look, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

  • Editing Timebase - 29.97fps footage, timeline jumps to 24

My footage is in 29.97 but for some reason the settings on the timeline won't change from 23.98. When I paste it to a different timeline - it'll go to 23.98 and won't let me change it. I'm putting graphics on it which need to be at 29.97 for the animation to work. Thoughts?

You can't change the timebase once there are clips in the timeline. If you delete the clips from the timeline you will see that you can change the timebase. But that's no different than just making a new sequence with the proper settings as Shane suggested. I am not sure if clip parameters change, but if you have done editing and don't want to lose it, you could try selecting all the content of the timeline, pressing cmd-x to cut it all and paste it to the clipboard, then go in and change the settings, then press cmd-v to paste the clipboard contents back into the original place. Might require going into the motion tab and changing the time remapping option back to default.

  • To buy or not to buy CUDA-Card while editing 1080p vs 720p. Advice needed!

    Hello folks,
I am relatively new to editing, not so much to computers and technologies. I was happily editing some GoPro 720p footage. Nearly with no issues, specifically I can fly through the previews at up to 3x fast-forward. 4x brings up stuttering.
Now as a contrast I started editing 1080p and it's a pain in the *ss. Above 2x (that is 3x and 4x) the stuttering while previewing footage in Premiere Pro CS6 starts.
I've read the FAQs (specifically about optimization, CUDA, multi-core, and so on). I have a Quadcore Q9550, 8 GB RAM, SSD main for the OS, secondary SATA 7200 RPM and a third SATA disk. When I look at the task manager and I do the 3x fast-forward in 1080p (also in 720p for the case, no obvious differences actually) I cannot see any "bottleneck" in my hardware. The HDD/SSD drives are nearly not working, the CPU is about 50% and the RAM is also about 50% of usage.
So I don't understand why this is happening? Do I actually need a CUDA graphics card? (Got a 9600 GT with 512MB RAM) Shouldn't the REST of the PCs hardware be completely "stressed" before I need to add a CUDA card to the system? Why doesn't it use the full CPU quadcore for the preview?
I also have checked and re-checked the correct sequence settings, and have done it manually and also the "quick way" buy using "Make new sequence from clip". Results where the same.
    I appreciate your advice.
    Thanks in advance,
    marknekk

Unlike Win8, Win7 Task Manager won't tell you much about disk I/O - Resource Monitor is a better tool for that.
    Windows 8 Task Manager:
Note "active time", "average response time". Win8 Task Manager is awesome.
    Windows 7/8 Resource Monitor:
You still get "active time" (blue graph), giving you an idea of utilization but not "response time".
Have you tried doing a 3x playback test with the SSD you have? Put a video clip there temporarily, and do a 3x playback on it, see if the behavior is the same.
Also, tried a 3x playback at 1/4th or 1/8th of resolution?

  • Editing 1080p footage on MacBook Pro 15-inch Core i5 2.4GHz

    Hi,
I am thinking of purchasing a Canon EOS 550d. I would be very interested to know if my April 2010 MacBook Pro 15-inch Core i5 2.4GHz will be capable of editing 1080p footage shot at 25fps (PAL). I have edited 720p footage without any problems, but I have never had a camera capable of recording in 1080p.
    Thanks,
    Acros-Krik

Should not be a problem at all. The best path is to transcode your footage using something like MPEG Streamclip to a usable codec, i.e. ProRes422 or Apple Intermediate Codec, for Final Cut Pro or Express respectively. If using Premiere Pro CS5, you can import native files directly into it. ProRes422 LT is a great codec from FCP7 only, it keeps the transcoded footage at the same file size as the native files and holds plenty of information for color grading later.
It's highly recommended to have all footage and scratch files on an external drive and not your OS drive. Makes everything operate more smoothly.
I do video work on the exact same machine using Final Cut Pro 7. I would strongly advise maxing out the ram. 8GB of ram helped a lot. I was hitting the 4GB limit with just a few pro apps open prior to adding more.

  • Does CS4 not come with a AVC 720p sequence?

When I go to start a project using my fraps'ed video and I reach the sequence selection screen, I can not find a AVC 720p sequence.  I am not aware of any other form that would be a subsitute and I don't have the RAM to edit at 1080p.  If there is no AVC 720p and/or there is no way to get it, are there any other sequences that work with fraps that offer a 720p?

  • Picture stretched after outputting edit of Red One footage

I exported edit of Red footage to self contained Quicktime and movie looks beautiful. However, when I used Quicktime file as source in DVD Pro or Compressor, the picture is slightly stretched vertically and there is bad artifacting. I noticed that the Quicktime file frame size is 2048x1024 (2:1 aspect ratio). I used log & tranfer ProRes 422 (16:9 aspect ratio) to capture footage and same sequence settings to edit. It looked great in FCP. What the heck am I doing wrong?! Why the difference in the aspect ratios?

Actually, I have been informed that the RED whitepaper I used to guide me through the process of ingesting and editing in FCP was incorrect. They assume that everyone shoots at a 2:1 aspect ratio. My DP shot at 16:9. So, per RED instructions, I customized a ProRes 422 (HQ) codec by changing the aspect ratio to 2048x1024 (2:1 ratio)....WRONG!! If I had been more experienced, I would have questioned that spec immediately. FCP compensated by cropping the top and bottom. I didn't notice the blue guides missing at the top and bottom until someone asked me if I could see them. In short, I've solved the stretch problem. But I still have really bad artifacting in the MPEG2 files created for DVD. I'm trying to figure out why that's happening. Also, I uploaded a web version of the short film and heard ringing in the soundtrack where there was music playing. My audio in the FCP edit is at 48Mhz and the output file is 44Mhz. Could that be a problem?

  • 1080 footage in 720 sequence?

I've shot footage at 1080/30p and transcoded it using pro res, and i'm editing the resulting clips with 720 video (basically Youtube HD) and would like the clips to look good together. Should I just use a 720 sequence? What exactly happens to 1080 ProRes footage when dropped into a 720 timeline? Do I need to do any conversions before I edit?
Or, should I make the sequence 1080 and render out 720?
    Input greatly appreciated!
    Chris

I wish there were an easier way to explain this but there are many different approaches to the task and they complicates the matter.
To avoid red bars and rendering in the timeline, you must use clips that have already been converted to your timeline's base settings and codec.
To help you make a decision on how you approach the challenge, you might start with a look backwards from your output. If your output is 720, you could downconvert your 1080 and lose much less than upscaling your 720 to 1080 and then transcoding yet again.
You can create an output sequence designed to convert. Drop your clips into it one at a time, scale and position, then export to the new format. Name these movies carefully, reimport them.
You could batch process them all in a single Compressor run and Qmaster might help you speed up the process. (Umm, that's another forum and another set of issues.)
You could reload your tapes and transcode in realtime while you are capturing.
But you've got to decide how muchh work you want to do and what the benefits are in chosing any flow over another. For instance, if you are going to use your 720 footage in more 1080 projects, you want to invest in the upscale and use all manner of filtration and image controls so the footage is as beautiful as it can be. If you're not planning on using your 720 in any future 1080 projects, you can discard the upscaled footage as soon as you're done. that seems a bit wasteful.

  • Help! anyone who edits 1080p hd videos on macs

Will a 13" 2.8 Ghz intel core i7 (with an upgrade to 8GB) be fast enough to edit 1080p footage from a GoPro HD Hero2 WITHOUT LAGGING on a program like final cut? Becuase I dont have enough $ for a 15" and the 13" ones dont have the AMD Radeon HD graphics cards.
    Thanks, Mike

15" would always be better but the 13 should work fine

  • Editing clip changes entire footage

Moved captured video from browser window into viewer window, set my "In" and "Out" points, moved the selected clip to the timeline and tried to edit that one clip w- brightness & contrast (even made it an "independent clip", renamed it, and even copied it back into the browser window ----- trying different solutions); however, whatever method I try in order to edit just that one clip, the edit effects the entire footage the clip came from originally. What is the proper method to edit a single clip for or in the timeline without effecting the "mother-clip" (which needs no editing)? Thank you. ----- TMP-MAC

I tried applying the effect to the clip in the timeline (as the Apple tutorial said to do) then double-clicking the clip to make adjustments in the effects-tab window of the viewer. I also tried just double-clicking a clip into the viewer then adding effects by way of the toolbar at the top of the screen (and selecting my chosen video effect). I saw my changes, but everytime I place a clip (with any method, such as double-clicking it) back into the viewer window for editing, it shows the entire original clip again with the "In" & "Out" points around my selected clip, and the effects / changes get applied to all of the footage in the viewer window both inside and outside of the "In" & "Out" points. Also, even though the selected clip did get adjusted by the applied effects, when I made a freeze-frame image from the effected clip, it had to re-apply the same effects to the image (it had the original appearance to it, as it no effects applied). Why would FCE not make a freeze-frame image and include the effects of that clip (if I may add a relative question here)?

  • Is the basic iMac able to edit 1080p? (21.5 inch)

Hey guys, I'm choosing a new imac to buy because mine is from 2007!!
I don't have a lot of money to buy a High end Imac so I'm thinking of buying the basic version but with the fusion drive.
Will this be enought to edit 1080p video? I'm not a professional videographer but I would like to be able to use programs like Final cut and Adobe after efects to do some cool stuff. I don't need it to be super fast, because I know it won't, but I need to know before I buy it if it will have enough power to render 1080p
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The Late 2012 21'5-inch iMac is completely compatible with 1080p video editing. I'm using an old iMac and I sometimes make 1080p videos without any problem, so the new iMac doesn't have this problem

Can now with imovie 1.2.2 and iOS5 edit 1080p high definition video from DSLR cameras like the EOS 5D Mark II on ipad 2?.
That would be great, you would open the door to professional video editing ipad 2. Is there an accepted camera list?.

There does not appear to be a list yet.

  • Time lapse effect from video footage NOT from sequence of photographs?

    Hi forum,
hard to find this with a search because most of the links are about using photo sequence.
Which effect can make the appearance of time lapse movies using video footage not photo sequence. Preferably I would like to have control on the speed at different sections.

If you want to simulate timelapse with standard video all you should have to do is speed up the footage. IOW, retime a 1 hour take to 10 seconds and it will look like timelapse.
If you want to simulate long exposure timelapse (like where the lights of cars are streaks) then you have a lot more work to do. You'll need to use something like the Echo effect and then adjust the timing. It would help if we knew a little more about your project. I've been shooting timelapse for more than 40 years and I've used about 100 different techniques. It's hard to replicate all but one of them using a video camera.

  • Audio synced with 29.97fps footage and now it needs to be synced to23.98fps

when the sound guys was mixing..he used 29.97fps footage and now the post house who will conform it to HDCAM SR he is having a trouble with the audio problem. It is fps issue.. what is the easiest and fastest way to fix this audio problem ? Does the sound guy need to re mix it ? Or is there any tool that will just convert the audio that is synced to 29.97fps footage to match to the 23.98fps one.. ?
    thanks in advance..

29.97 digital file, or 29.97 on tape? If tape...easy, output via a capture card, it will add the proper pulldown. FILE? Gotta use Compressor, and tweak the settings to add the pulldown right. It's tricky.

  • Downsizing 5d mkii 1080p and Gopro 720p footage into same 720p sequence

    Hey guys,
I'm new here and have looked around on the forums and FAQ's for answers but have turned up with nothing.
Basically I have filmed footage in 1080p with a Canon 5d mkII and also 720p footage with two GoPro's.
I want to export a 720p video using both of these resolutions.
What I had planned was downsizing the 1080p footage (already in the sequence) to 720p to match the rest of the footage and can't seem to work out how to do it!
My current attempts have the 720p footage come up as a smaller  'box' in the final clip, where you can still see the 1080p footage below  it.
In other words, the 1080p footage isn't downsizing, and is staying at 1080p.
If anyone could help me, it would be much appreciated!
    Using Premiere Pro CS5.5
    Cheers

It looks exactly the same quality, just compressed!
That's rather a contradiction in terms.  Most compression types aren't lossless, and certainly the options from Handbrake aren't, which means some level of degredation will be introduced in the process.  It's not good advice to convert already heavilly comrpessed footage for editing, unless you're converting to a lossless format.
