Editing the Address Book template

Can I make multiple templates, for different categories? Such as a template for individuals and a template for companies.
Also, how do I change the order in which the fields appear?

To me this is such an obvious missing feature that I've been asking Apple for it for years. Perhaps you should too: http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
I was searching here wondering if someone had written an Address Book plugin to enable additional and modified templates.

  • Adding Address2 line into the Address Book template

Need to add Address2 for Suite numbers in the address book. How is this accomplished?

You can use the return key in Line 1 to have a 2-line address. Doing this doesn't move you to a new field. Presumably you can add a third line in a similar way. This is often needed with UK addresses which are many lines long.
This is of course not a change in the template, just in typing the entry.

  • Problem with synchronization of the Address Book

My problem is in the synchronization of the Address Book:
if I add or delete a contact in the iPhone or nell'iPad, syncing, iTunes tells me that there will be a change in the address book, but then in the Address Book on my Mac the new name does not exist or, if I deleted, remains .
If I make a change (eg. Put an address or a birthday) in contacts of the iPhone or iPad, iTunes tells me that I'm editing the Address Book, but then the change is not in the Mac
The strange thing is that after the synchronization, if I delete the new name or the variation in the iPhone or iPad, iTunes tells me again that it is making a change on something in the Mac Address Book I can not see, but which evidently is somewhere, but does not appear for whatever **** reason.
On the contrary, working on the Address Book in Mac, synchronization is successful, and devices that I feedback positively what I added or removed from my Mac
The synchronization of iCal instead occurs regularly in both directions.
    MacBook Intel Core 2 Duo
    OS Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    iPhone 4 16G
    iPad 3 16G
    All applications updated
    I do not use iCloud

    Hi Krishna,
The only solution I can think of displaying the doc inside the portal content area is to create a document iView, embed this iView in a role and then in the link use:
http://<server>:<port>/irj/portal?NavigationTarget=ROLES://<PCD Location of the iView inside the role>
But that is not very short.

  • Address Book template-to-display oddity..

(Hi! I first posted this query in the Leopard>Mail and Address Book Discussions, but there's been no response there, so I thought that there might be a greater chance of a response from those with Tiger experience and expertise..)
I've spent three-quarters-of-an-hour searching through previous posts to see if this has appeared as a problem before, but can't find any mention here in Leopard nor Tiger Discussions..
I'm asking on behalf of my beloved, who's tearing her hair..
She's created an Address Book Template (Address Book>Preferences>Template) and has successfully imported records from Filemaker (by using 'Address Book Importer').
HOWEVER, although she's created (or renamed) fields in the Address Book template, such as
    home page
    birthday
    last changed
    Data in/change
    C1
    C2
    work done
    practitioner
    etcetera (..those C1 and C2 are Comment fields..) nevertheless when data's been imported (and it does all import OK!) some of the fields shown in her Address Book cards are displayed in a different order.. e.g;
    home page
    birthday
    last changed
    Data in/change
    C1
    work done
    Admin info
    category
    flat
    C2
..etcetera. In other words, the C2 field, for instance, is displayed far further down the fields list than it is in her template, where it sits just beneath C1!
This doesn't seem to be based on some peculiar alphabetical or alphanumeric sorting of the fields or the data within them, and when all fields have data in them then that re-ordering is consistent ..e.g; C2 is always separated from C1 by having 'work done', 'Admin info', 'category' and 'flat' between them. ("Flat" is an address field; in the UK "flat" means "apartment".)
We don't seem to be able to find any re-ordering facility which would bring back the display into the same order as the template.
Is there such a facility to re-order the display, apart from re-ordering the template on a kind of hit-&-miss basis until it sticks properly in the cards display? ..And has anyone else come across - and solved? - this problem of fields being arbitrarily(?) re-ordered in the display?
    Many thanks in advance..!

The template preference should work for you. If you hit the green + button you can add fields with all kinds of different default names. If those field names don't match your needs you just select the field name (the bold typeface one) and scroll down in the resulting box and use the "custom" field to add any title you wish. It should change the name of that field to the name you wish to use and that will match the named fields you all area already used to using. You can do this with any field so you should be able to match any fields you wish.
I hope I understand your question correctly. If not...sorry.

  • Editing Mail Address Book

I would like to edit the address book in Mail. I need to add a contact from scratch; i.e. not a contact in any mail box, just a new contact with a dialog box for entering the contact information such as name, address, phone number, e-mail, web page, etc. Also I need to be able to edit the address book; remove a contact or edit the information of a particular contact. I can't seem to get the address book to contain more than the e-mail address of a contact. Where is the address, phone number, and other information?

  • When I access the address book, how can I copy an address without having to open the person's info in the edit window?

When I find a person's address in the address book and highlight their name in one pane, in the lower pane their info shows up. Unfortunately, highlighting the information I want is disabled. So, I open their info in the edit window, and then click on the appropriate tab.
Getting a single piece of information is not so inconvenient, but when you're putting together lists it is rather onerous to do it that way.
Being able to highlight and copy off the address book panes would be cool. Thanks

In an earlier communication, I had said that this was possible, at least with TB on Windows, but I realize now that it's only possible when a certain add-on is enabled: [https://freeshell.de//~kaosmos/morecols-en.html MoreFunctionsForAddressBook]
    http://chrisramsden.vfast.co.uk/3_How_to_install_Add-ons_in_Thunderbird.html
Install the add-on, and see if you can now highlight info in the Contact Pane by dragging the cursor. Ctrl-C (or the Mac equivalent) to copy the highlighted text to the clipboard.
You may notice that right-clicking an address in the Contact Pane now shows a Copy command, but a bug in the add-on prevents this option from being active.

  • HOW TO SEND PERSONALIZED EMAILS (WITH SAME MESSAGE) TO ALL ADDRESSES IN THE ADDRESS BOOK - WITH RECIPIENTS SEEING ONLY THEIR NAME BUT NOT WHO ELSE IS GETTING IT

HOW TO SEND PERSONALIZED EMAILS WITH THE SAME MESSAGE, BUT WITH THE INDIVIDUAL RECIPIENT'S NAME... (OR NAME AND THE EMAIL ADDRESS) TO ALL ADDRESSES IN THE ADDRESS BOOK - WITH RECIPIENTS SEEING ONLY THEIR OWN NAME WITHIN THE BODY OF THE MESSAGE TO THEM ?
ALSO, HOW TO ELIMINATE ALL THE OTHER NAMES FROM THE LIST - SO THEY CAN NOT SEE WHO ELSE IS ON THE MAILING LIST, AND WHO ELSE IS GETTING THE SAME MESSAGE?

In the csv file, the column headers must match the the special references in curly brackets.
So you either change the column header in .csv file or the bit in the curly brackets in the Template email.
    To change the column header:
In the example shown below, I wanted to use the first two columns
'First Name', 'Last Name' note the exact spelling.
I also wanted the email address which was in a column called 'Primary Email'.
To make it easier for me, I copied the Primary Email column and inserted it into the third column position and then changed the column header name from 'Primary Email' to 'Email'. (This meant I still had the original column header just in case). see image below.
But you could just change the column header name from 'Primary Email' to 'Email' without moving column about - up to you.
At this point check that all the contacts do have a valid email address.
    then save the file.
If you do not want to edit the .csv file, then you need to edit the template email.
    eg: {{First Name}} {{Last Name}} <{{Email}}>
    change to : {{First Name}} {{Last Name}} <{{Primary Email}}>
If still having an issue, please post two images.
One image needs to show the row of column headers used in .csv file.
The other image needs to show the Template email, so I can see how you have used the curly brackets.

  • How to delete a custom field created in Address Book template?

It is possible to create a new custom field name in any of the pop-up field categories in the preferences template for Address Book.
But, once created, there does not seem to be a way to delete or edit the newly created custom field name. That doesn't make sense.
Tell me that I am wrong, and then tell me how to delete or edit a custom field name. Thanks!!

Thanks Pascal, I can change the viewed template field areas as you have described. My problem was with modification of the pop-up list entries: adding, deleting, and renaming user created custom field entries. I have since figured out how Address Book allows these functions; unfortunately, that specific information is not present in the Address Book help file.

  • Address Book template and Exchange server

We're in the process of upgrading about 250 Macs from OS 9 to Mac OS X 10.4.3 at my work. We're now binding our Mac workstations to the Active Directory and having folks log in against the network. One byproduct of this is that the Apple Address Book now can search/display folks in the Exchange Server's Global Address Book. However, the template that the Address Book uses to display each person's information is pretty limited. We get the full name, LAN ID, a business group, a location/building, a "work" phone number (which is an internal number) and the internal e-mail address. The Global Address Book contains significantly more information than this, including a true local phone number. In Outlook, this field is defined as a "Business 2" phone number. Editing the default Address Book template does not seem to allow any of this additional information to be displayed. Is there somewhere else that we could edit a file so some of these options are mapped correctly to the Apple Address Book?

  • An efficient means of n naming and organizing Groups in the address book

    Hello,
First, I hope you are having a nice day. If not, I hope it gets better soon!
Next, I would like to provide the following before explaining:
Here is an article regarding a novel means of uploading pictures with descriptions from a Mac to Flickr without a "third party" application.
A novel way to upload photos from a Mac, with a complete description, to Flickr [http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474978195922].
    A very simple example:
Possible list of names in the "Groups" section:
    National Politicians
    California Politicians
    Texas Politicians
    Colorado Politicians
In the address book, the above would be organized in the following order with "N" names between. "N" is the other alphabetical names:
    California Politicians
    <N>
    Colorado Politicians
    <N>
    National Politicians
    <N>
    Texas Politicians.
    *Greater Efficiency*
In my opinion, the following is more efficient means of naming and organizing the address book:
    Politicians.National
    Politicians.California
    Politicians.Texas
    Politicians.Colorado
As long as the spelling of the first description and period are included, the latter will be organized as follows with "n" "group names" where "group name" is the "Politicians." group with a "name" between:
    Politicians.California
    <n>
    Politicians.Colorado
    <n>
    Politicians.National
    <n>
    Politicians.Texas
If the above four are the only names in the "Politician." "group name", the list would be organized as follows:
    <N>
    Politicians.California
    Politicians.Colorado
    Politicians.National
    Politicians.Texas
    <N>
    * The Colon and Problem with "linking" in Mail*
As a side note, I have noticed some Library of Congress links do not "link" in Mail. As an example, I recently noticed that I could not "link" the following "URL" because there was a ":" at the end. If the ":" is not present, the URL will lead to a different page. I will be contacting Apple technical support and report this problem, but, I have figured out a way to circumvent this problem. I explain below.
+Link with colon and then a colon and zero+
    • Library of Congress: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:S.2925:
If you paste the above link into the Mail message body and select "Edit" » "Link" » "Add" and "Paste" the link into the text box, the "Add" button will not be triggered. If the ":" is removed, the "Add" button will be triggered and highlighted. Sadly, the link will be incorrect.
    Circumvention
In the above case, the solution is quite simple. Just add a zero, "0", after the colon, ":" , as such.
    • Library of Congress link with a zero: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:S.2925:0
The above link works and Mac's Mail "Add" feature will add a properly working link to the message body.
By the way, please ask your Congressional Representatives to support the above bill!
Have a nice day! By the way, I am a Chemical Engineer in search of employment! :•)

So how the Addressbook's Group List would look after syncing with the Soho Organizer's Contacts Subgroups organization? If Address book don't have that ability of Subgrouping.
I have been researching after a while now every single possible way without a luck. Please let me know if you find a solution.
Here are a are a couple of interesting apps that are taking contacts organization more seriouslly. But still dont have the answer for it.
    5degrees.
    http://www.5degrees.us,
    $9.99 a month
    Desktop and iphone.
    Bento
Great for customizing the contacts template.
    Also an iphone app.
    http://www.filemaker.com/products/bento/
My favorite would be Cobook Contacts since they also have the iphone app. Very clean design.
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/41822/cobook
    http://www.cobookapp.com
But still, none of this have the Subgroup organizing feature.
Please let me know if toy find a solution.

  • Address Book template drops fields

I'm trying to set up my address book for our local artists' association so it includes special fields that will contain information on dues paid this year (field=YWA) and participation in an annual art show (field= SAT).
First, I have a lot of artists already entered, but since entering them I have realized I must change the basic template. I've changed the basic template, but when I click "Edit" for an individual artist, the original template comes up, which doesn't have the fields I've added.
So I create a new template and reenter the artist, but half way through going back and forth between the old entry and the new entry on the revised template, the revised template drops the fields I've created and I'm back to ground zero. Sometimes even less than zero: fewer fields than the original template had.
Is this just an awful bug? It renders the address book useless...
Is there a solution to this, short of going back to Now Contact? Or is there another Address Book that works? Is there any way to import contacts into a new template without having to copy and paste each field again?

    Update:
I am using Exchange 2010 for address book. Problem seems to be that you can't edit the photos or the template default when editing a card.
Works fine for any contact on my mac address book, but not on Exchange.
Anyone else with the same issue?

  • Since the debut of iCloud, I cannot add spouse, child etc... data to the address book.  Anyone have a clue how to get it back??

Ever since iCloud went live, I cannot add any spouse, child etc... info to the address book.  Anyone have an idea how to get this back.  I tried to reset the template, looks like it has been removed.  I also de-selected the iCloud and selected on my local Mac in the accounts area in preferences. Still no luck. My address book entries prior to iCloud still have all the data and I'm able to modifiy if desired.  Any ideas??

I copied this from an extremely knowledgable iTunes for Windows user in another discussion. Maybe this will help.
In Windows, you can restore much of the look & feel of iTunes 10.7 with these shortcuts:
ALT to temporarily display the menu bar
CTRL+B to show or hide the menu bar
CTRL+S to show or hide the sidebar
CTRL+/ to show or hide the status bar (won't hide for me on Win XP)
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour
Use View > Hide <Media Kind> in the cloud or Edit (iTunes) > Preferences > Store anduntick Show iTunes in the cloud purchases to hide the cloud items. The second method eliminates the cloud status column (and may let iTunes start up more quickly)
If you don't like having different coloured background & text in the Album (Grid) view use Edit(iTunes) > Preferences > General and untick Use custom colours for open albums, movies, etc.
With iTunes 11.0.3 you can enable artwork in the Songs and playlist views from View > Show View Options (CTRL+J) making it more like the old Album List view.
If you are a Mac user, all you have to do is start navigating through the menu items at the top of the screen to find just about everything that is mentioned here.

  • Can't edit shared address book, which also shows over 400 "no name" accts

My wife and i each have an iPhone and a work/personal computer. In order to make syncing of contacts easier (yeah right). I created a shared account on our family MobileMe account. In that account i dropped all of our contacts and set up sharing to allow both my wife and myself to view and edit. It was a little ugly in 10.5 but it worked. After installing 10.6 everything is screwed up. Now neither of us can edit or delete contacts in the shared account. Also, even though we only have 507 contacts we also have an extra 395 "no name" accounts that have no data associated with them. I've tried everything. I've killed syncing of the address book on all computers, backed up the address book and deleted the ~/Application Support/Address Book folder and reset syncing etc. It seems sharing is no longer an option?

update: my address book is now up to 1009 contacts...seems every time it syncs it adds new "no name" accounts.
