Effects on text?

How come you can put a preset "Graphic Style" on a text layer, and then completely change a gradient, for example, that shows up from one of the Graphic Styles on the Appearance panel, but on another text layer (with no styles applied) which just has a simple fill color, you cannot add a gradient from the 'gradient panel' without first expanding the text?

This would hinge on the settings on the appearance panel. I'm not enough of an AI user to have a proper explanation, but I think it has to do with how styles affect compound paths vs. normal gradients.... there's certainly some simple setting we are both not aware of, so let's wait for Jeff or someone else to enlighten us. ;-)

This has to do with the way we set text to be rendered in the browser. You are able to apply a drop shadow to system fonts (which will be rasterized to an image in the browser), but currently web safe fonts with drop shadow aren't supported in Muse because we still support IE8 and IE9 -- which don't support the shadow effect for text. One sort of work around is to use two text frames, one which holds your text and one which has black coloring with opacity less than 100% applied to the text that gets set behind and offset to your text to appear as though it were drop shadow, while keeping your text live. Group them together and moving them shouldn't throw off your design too much.

fotomagico allows amazing movements of text
i movie i see works with the actual text but
how can i use the KEN BURN effect with TEXT
so it doesnt stay stagnant on the screen

Or if You want to elaborate a bit more You can first
• make a project where You set text
• Then Export this as full quality QuickTime .mov
• Import this new clip and start a new project where You apply Ken-Burns
OR MAY BE doing it the other way around will work better - don't think that Ken-Burns can be applied last
AnyHow - by Export and Import as a part of process one can make extreamly complex sceens.

One more problem, whenever i try to pin or try to give some effect on text or shapes it automatically got invisible !!! even do in master page or in home page it got invisbile. Please help me out and why this is happening to me. I am sick and tired of all trouble now.............

A friend of mine called me today with the same issue. No idea how to resolve this, never heard of it before. She has a message that she used to forward before now permamently stuck. Even when she selects some other message to forward, that old text appears instead, thus making FW-ing unusable.

How do you add outer glow effect to text in Elements 12?

I've created a layer in Elements 12 that contains some text. I'd like to add an outer glow effect.
This is what I am doing:
1. Select layer with text
2. Click FX button at bottom of screen
3. Click Styles tab
4. Select Outer Glow from drop down
5. I can see 11 preset option. The only one that works is called 'Fire' and it is not the style I'm looking for. I want a simple outline, but none of the other presets have any effect.
Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks!

This brings up the Style settings dialog. At the bottom, check "Stroke", and adjust with the sliders to suit.

Cant add effects to text in Premiere CS6

Hey Guys,
I'm trying to add noise to some text in Premiere Pro 6 but no luck, I used CS5 before this and all was fine, I could just drag effects onto the text and all was fine.
Am I doing something wrong? Is it add effects to still, or default roll? Do things work differently in CS6?

Fade effect bold text in all IEs

I have created the following page

below the "A Sampling of what we offer" graphic.
It works fine but in IE6 and IE7 when viewed on an LCD
monitor, the bold blue text looks very choppy. I assume this has to
do with bad handling of opacity in IE. Does anyone know a hack to

Hi artdoggy,
That is an IE bug with several workarounds. The first
workaround which is much simpler, is to specify a background color
or font on the element that you are fading in. This somehow
triggers IE to avoid this behavior.
The other workaround is to use an effect onPostEffect
observer or finish function to unset the filter function on the
element. You can see sample of how to use an observer here:

Clipboard.autocopy=false in about:config, - no effect. selecting text still copies to clipboard

I have a custom firefox extension that grabs data from the clipboard, as well as selected text from the firefox document. Problem is, every time I select text, it overrides the clipboard data with selected text data. The clipboard always mirroring my text selection. I need to disable this. Or, ensure that selected text gets sent to primary clipboard, while firefox extension accesses clipboard. (I am assuming nsIClipboard pulls data from clipboard vs primary-clipboard).
I am confident that selected text is being dumped into clipboard, and not into primary clipboard. Selected text always overrides whatever I copied using Ctrl + C command. Middle mouse click, or Ctrl + V output same thing.
I have changed the default setting in about:config to clipboard.autocopy value= false. I have restarted my system and selected text still saves to clipboard. This issue does show up on this thread here https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=854565. But it is checked as solved. Apologies if this question should have been posted there. I am using Linux Mint 17, Firefox 32.0.3

I have solved the problem. I first updated all my software, which had no effect. Then I realized another extension may be adding this functionality. And voila! I am pretty sure Fastest Search was the culprit. I disabled the addon, although, this feature can probably be turned off.
I hope this helps any future users that face this same issue.

How can I replicate this analog TV warping effect on text?

I've tried using the puppet warp, but creating additional points seems to give the curves unnatural "kinks" that don't match up with the effect I'm trying to achieve.
I'm also seeing a sort of duplicating effect that's happening, with a second "blackout" that's kind of emerging from the top, but I'm less worried about that. Just wondering how to get this kind of warping. Can anyone help?

It's doable, but needs a bit of user input.
Stretching the text without blocking up the cross-bars at the top and bottom is the first problem, but you can get round that with Content Aware Scale.
Lay down the text and Rasterize.
Drag rectangular selections across the bottom and top of the text and save the selection. (I should probably dragged a third selection round the 'B' cross-bar.)
Select all > Content Aware Scale > Protect in the Options bar, and choose the selection you saved. Stretch the text.
Now just distort with Liquify adjusting brush size and pressure to suit. (I did try other options, but Liquify was the only one that did not soften the edges.
Fairly close to your original I'd say.

Trouble using effects on text...

When I select my text then go to EFFECTS SKETCH TORN EDGES I get the effect that I like with my text but I have 2 problems. First the text has white around the edges instead of being transparent & secondly the text can only be black & I would really like it in color. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! (have 5.5 if it matters)

You can do it but it is a bit of a pain.
It involves using a copy of the text and making an opacit mask that is not clipped or inverted and another that is clipped and inverted.
The latter is used to add the color to the text, the former is used to mask what ever you are placing behind the color version.
Like such
The former you place your text with the effect applied over a color shape say rectangle
then go to the Transparency Panel and select aboth and from the flyout choose Make Opacity Mask, make certain it is clipped and inverted. The text has to be on top of the color field.
Before yoy make the mask copy and pasre the text behind both the color shape and the original text
then place what ever you want the colored text to be on top of and make certain that are and or image is behind the txt you copied and pasted behind.
Now select the copied Text and the art that will be behind the colored text and go agin tothe Transparency Panel and from the flyout choose Opacity mask make this time do not clip it or invert it.

After Effects 3D Text Colouring?

I have been working for quite a bit now to try to firgure this out, but I still can't get it. I have made some 3D text in Ae, and coloured it orange. In photoshop, I was able to go into the layer in 3D mode and edit the insides of the letters to a darker shade of orange. I can't find this in Ae. So how would I do it?

If this is live text and you are using raytrace 3D, then apply the relevant text animators. If this is a 3D PSD, then it's inaccessible and you only get a rendered layer.

Problem with After effects present text animations

When I want to use the text animation presets I get an error message, an example is when I want to use a text "animate in" preset and got the following error message: After Effects error: Can't import file "Fly In From Bottom.ffx": unsupported filetype or extension. ( 0 :: 1 ). I have check my bridge script settings and they are activated for After effects.

Sounds like you are trying to import a FFX file instead of applying an animation preset. Some users are reporting problems with Bridge. Just type the name of the animation preset into the Effects and Presets panel and apply it from inside AE.

After Effects CC Text Problem

wenn ich in After Effects CC 2014 eine Text mit Strg + Alt + Shift + T (oder mit dem Text Tool) erstelle, dann sehe ich diesen roten Rand vom Textfeld. Aber wenn ich etwas eintippe wird es mir nicht angezeigt, ich sehe aber unten bei den Ebenen den Inhalt des Textfeldes (wenn ich z.B. "Hallo" eintippe, dann wird mir "Hallo" bei den Ebenen angezeigt, aber bei der Komposition [bei dem Bild] nicht). Ich wollte hier mal fragen ob mir wer helfen könnte das Problem zu beheben.
Ich benutze After Effects CC 2014 für Windows 8.

Und noch was: Natürlich auch schauen, dass du in der richtigen "Aktive Kamera" Ansicht bist, und die nicht irgendwelche ebenen mit einer Dicke von Null von oben oder der Seite anschaust...

Adding Effects to text layers now causing image to "disappear."

Ever since the latest update to PS CS6, when I add a simple effect to a text layer, like emboss, the working image disappears when I zoom in and out. Also, the layer effect does nothing to the type. It's almost like a dispay issue. When I turn the layer effect off, my image is visible again. Here's what it looks like:

There were some bugs in layers with the latest update, especially on a Mac. Adobe is working on it.
