EjbCreate() architecture with CMP 2.0; confused

I exhaustively searched for this topic in this, and other forums, and
tried some suggested techniques, but none worked.
I've received "Primary key fields of bean not initialized" in     the following stmt.
     Entity1Remote prEntity1Remote = printHome.create( new Integer(1) );     <-- should parm. list be empty??
RemoteClient1.java contains:
     package com.zbeans;
     import com.zbeans.Entity1Remote;
     import com.zbeans.Entity1RemoteHome;
     import javax.naming.InitialContext;
     Context prinitctx = new InitialContext();
     Context prenvctx = (Context) prinitctx.lookup("java:comp/env");
     Object prrefHome = prenvctx.lookup("ejb/Entity1 EJB ref1");
     Entity1RemoteHome printHome = (Entity1RemoteHome)
          PortableRemoteObject.narrow( prrefHome, Entity1RemoteHome.class );
     /* Following causes "Primary key fields of bean not initialized" */
     Entity1Remote prEntity1Remote = printHome.create( new Integer(1) );     <-- should parm. list be empty??
     I ran using D:\zJava\zsamples\EJB\application1>C:\j2sdkee1.3.1\bin\runclient -client application1.ear -name RemoteClient1 -textauth
     I ensured j2ee and cloudscape were running, and
     set APPCPATH=application1Client.jar     (application1Client.jar was generated by the deployment tool)
The bean code contains:
     package com.zbeans;
     import javax.ejb.*;
     public abstract class Entity1Bean implements javax.ejb.EntityBean {
          public Integer property1;     /* primary key (all lower case, unless that
               breaches naming conventions?). All letters s/b in lower case to
               exactly match non-capitalization of primary key in deployment tool?? */
          /* Must the parm. variable be identically named as the primary key name?? */
          public Integer ejbCreate(Integer property1) throws EJBException, CreateException {
          //public Integer ejbCreate(Integer pnNewProperty1) throws EJBException, CreateException {
          //public void ejbCreate(Integer pnNewProperty1) throws EJBException, CreateException {
               System.out.println("\nInside Entity1Bean.ejbCreate()");     <-- this stmt. was reached
               this.property1 = property1;
               //property1 = pnNewProperty1;
               /* return pnNewProperty1; or return Property1?? should return null for
                    CMP 2.0?? I don't     think so */
               return property1;
          }     // ejbCreate() method
          public abstract Integer getProperty1();
          public abstract void setProperty1(Integer pnNewProperty1);
Entity1RemoteHome.java contains:
     package com.zbeans;
     import java.rmi.RemoteException;
     import javax.ejb.*;
     public interface Entity1RemoteHome extends javax.ejb.EJBHome {
     public Entity1Remote create (Integer property1)
          throws CreateException, RemoteException, EJBException;
Remote1Client1, Entity1RemoteHome.java, etc. resides under d:\zjava\zsamples\com\zbeans
Unsuccessful remedies:
     1) in Entity1Bean
     public Integer ejbCreate(Integer id) throws javax.ejb.CreateException {
     coded
          return id;
     instead of
          return null;
     - some newsgroup posting states that for EJB 2.0 CMP must return Primary key
          type, while others disagree (refer below)
2)
     defined ejbCreate() return type as void instead of Integer,
     and commented out return stmt. i.e.
     public void ejbCreate(Integer id)
          //return null;
     - instead of -
     public Integer ejbCreate(Integer id)
          return null;
     - this compiled clean with javac, but in deployment tool system.err
     contained:
     Entity1Bean_PM.java:76: illegal start of expression return (void)
     partition.afterEjbCreate(this); ^
     c:\j2sdkee1.3.1\repository\computer\gnrtrTMP\application1\com\zbeans\Entity1Bean_PM.
     java:76: ')' expected return (void) partition.afterEjbCreate(this);
     c:\j2sdkee1.3.1\repository\computer\gnrtrTMP\application1\com\zbeans\Entity1Bean_PM.
     java:76: cannot return a value from method whose result type is void
     return (void) partition.afterEjbCreate(this); ^
3) property1 is actually the Integer primary key in deployment tool, so tried the
following
     public Integer Property1;     /* primary key; all letter s/b in lower case to
          exactly match capitalization in deployment tool?? */
     public Integer ejbCreate(Integer pnNewProperty1) throws EJBException, CreateException {
          Property1 = pnNewProperty1;
          return pnNewProperty1;
     }     // ejbCreate() method
4) as above, but typed property1 all in lower case so it would match the
non-capitalization of the primary key in the deployment tool i.e.
     public Integer property1;     /* primary key; all letter s/b in lower case to
          exactly match capitalization in deployment tool?? */
     public Integer ejbCreate(Integer pnNewProperty1) throws EJBException, CreateException {
          property1 = pnNewProperty1;
          return pnNewProperty1;
     }     // ejbCreate() method
5) as above, but made the parm. variable identically named as the
primary key name, and modifed return stmt. i.e.
     public Integer ejbCreate(Integer property1) throws EJBException, CreateException {
          this.property1 = property1;
          return property1;          /* removing this return caused " missing return
               statement" */
     }     // ejbCreate() method

My understanding was that for CMP2.0, ejbCreate() should accept a parm.
and return the primary key type? For my application, CMP 2.0 is
specified in the J2EE deploytool. I'm really getting confused on the
correct rules for developing the ejbCreate() in CMP 2.0 vs BMP, I've
read conflicting postings.
Instead of the J2EE Deployment Tool, am I better off learning another
server/deployer, such as JBoss, VisualAge for CSP, etc.?

I have noticed two bugs in your code:
1) You should ALWAYS use abstract get/set methods to modify CMP fields
of EJB 2.0 CMP entity bean.
Instead of
this.property1 = property1;call
setProperty1(Integer pnNewProperty1);2) you should return null in ejbCreate() method
"The entity object created by the ejbCreate<METHOD> method must have a unique primary
key. This means that the primary key must be different from the primary keys of all the existing
entity objects within the same home. However, it is legal to reuse the primary key of a previously
removed entity object. The implementation of the Bean Provider?s ejbCreate<
METHOD>(...) methods should be coded to return a null.[14]"
I hope it helps

  • Handling BLOBs with CMP Beans

    Hi,
    is there a detailed example how to handle Blob's with CMP Beans?
    I'm trying to store some images in a database (Oracle 9i) using CMP Beans and Oracle iAS 9.03 and jdk 1.4.
    Thanks in advance
    Jens

    We are currently developing a How-To on this and will put this on OTN.
    1) Code snippet from Bean Class:
    public abstract byte[] getPicture();
    public abstract void setPicture(byte[] newPicture);
    public Long ejbCreate(Long empno, byte[] newPicture)
    setEmpno(empno);
    setPicture(newPicture);
    return empno;
    public void ejbPostCreate(Long empno, byte[] newPicture)
    2) Mapping in the orion-ejb-jar.xml:
    <entity-deployment name="EmployeePicture" data-source="jdbc/OracleDS" table="EMPPIC">
    <primkey-mapping>
    <cmp-field-mapping name="empno" persistence-name="EMPNO" persistence-type="NUMBER(8)"/>
    </primkey-mapping>
    <cmp-field-mapping name="empno" persistence-name="EMPNO" persistence-type="NUMBER(8)"/>
    <cmp-field-mapping name="picture" persistence-name="PICTURE" persistence-type="BLOB(4000)"/>
    </entity-deployment>
    3) Create the client to create the bean:
    Long empNo =(Long) Long.valueOf(request.getParameter("EmpNo"));
    String fileName =request.getParameter("ImageFileName");
    InputStream is = new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream(fileName));
    int len;
    // Initialize byte array
    byte byteValue[] = new byte[2048000];
    len = is.read(byteValue);
    EmployeePictureLocal employeePicture = empHome.create(empNo , byteValue);
    out.println("Picture of Emp#:"+empNo +" successfully Loaded into DB <br> <br>");
    4) Code snippet to view the image :
    Long empNo =(Long) Long.valueOf(request.getParameter("EmpNo"));
    out.println("Picture of Emp#"+empNo);
    EmployeePictureLocal emp = empHome.findByPrimaryKey(empNo);
    response.setContentType("image/jpeg");
    OutputStream os = null;
    os = response.getOutputStream() ;
    byte[] pic = emp.getPicture();
         os.write(pic);
    os.close();
    os = null;
    Let me know if this helps
    thanks

  • Second application using EJB with CMP cannot see SQL Server Tables.

    We are running Sun One Application Server 7 V2004Q2 . We are also running Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC Service Pack 3 Version 2.2.0040 and SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition Version 8.00.818(SP3).
    (The 2 applications described below run perfectly fine when run one at a time. The second one fails only when it is started after the first one and it does not matter which one is strarted first..)
    Using the above, we run 2 applications that open SQL Server Connection Pools via EJB with CMP. The first application opens the connection pool correctly and successfullly obtains a connection from that connection pool and get table information from SQL Server.
    The second application opens a second connection pool to a second database in the same SQL Server. However, when the second application requests data over a connection from the second connection pool, we get an error message that it cannot find the requested table.
    In addition, the second application cannot ever see the SQL data until we restart the instance of the Sun One Application Server AND start that application by itself.

    Yes, they are.

    When I send an email with Mail, I often confuse the account which I'm using. The result is that I send a message with the wrong account! Is there a way to avoid this (for example a reminder before the email is sent)?

    Hi, thanks for the answer, I did that already. Unfortunatly this doesn't help me at all, as I often forget to check the menu. For me composing the message is writing the text, the subject, the person to who is addressed and than press "send".
    I often forget to check the "from", and this is a problem because the software select itself one of the accounts.
    Isn't there a way at least to put as a default a blank field instead of one of the accounts? or an account which doesn't work so if I forget to specify the "from" I will be rnotofied that the message can't be sent.
    I guess this could be a rather common problem for many people!

  • Did elationship fields in entity bean with CMP same as foreign key in table

    did elationship fields in entity bean with CMP same as foreign key in table database.so we don't have to make some foreign key column in table database.
    did Container handle that both.
    I need some answer
    thank's

    Suppose you have Group and user entity. Relation is 1-m. One group many users. When you create user, you dont need to send group id, All you need is create user and add it in collection (cmr-field) in group(user belongs to). Container will add its group id in user entity as well as in db.

  • How to SELECT FOR UPDATE with CMP (Oracle)

    The most common database (Oracle) by default uses a scheme that does not fit into any of those isolation levels. A SELECT statement selects data at the start of the transactions, whereas a SELECT ... FOR UPDATE does something quite different. It is essential to do SELECT FOR UPDATEs before updating the row as SELECT does no lock. It's a hack that works well in practice.
    1. Which isolation level is this?
    2. More fundamentally, how an earth is it possible to use this scheme with CMP?! You would have to distinguish load() from loadForUpdate()! Is CMP inconsistent with Oracle?
    This is a pretty big whole in the CMP spec!

    No. thats no goes well.
    Transaction serializable in Oracle uses a optimistic
    concurrency system. And for update is a
    pessimistic concurrency.
    With optimistic: the system is faster but it can fail
    With pessimistic: if doesnt fail (usually;)
    You can solve the proble with many differents systems:
    1. Edit the .xml descriptor files ans change the sql sentences.
    And my prefer one.
    2. Make a new jdbc driver that inherits from the original
    oracledriver.
    The new driver give u in "getConnection()" a new connection class that inherits from the original connection.
    The executestatement and preparestatement adds the
    string "for update" if the stattement was starting by select.
    Configure your container to use the new driver.

    Hi. You can do JDBC and invoke CMP EJBs and have this all treated
    as one transaction, if your hand-written code explicitly starts
    a JTS transaction, then uses the jts driver or a TxDataSource to
    get the JDBC connection. Then your code can call transactional
    EJBs and their work will be included in the transaction you started.
    Assuming the bean work went OK, and your manual JDBC went OK, you
    can manually commit the UserTransaction at that time. This is 5.1
    talk. For 6.0, with @PC, this may be even easier...

    Are you calling all the CMP create in the session Bean ? If so, beforeyou
    make the JDBC call from the session bean, the CMP in 2. should commit. Try
    to set its attribute to TX_REQUIRES_NEW. This way, the calling client will
    block until this transaction is done (committed) before the execution
    continues. There might be some overhead involved in doing so if you are
    anticipating a lot of users.

    What I am trying to do is:
    In a Session bean method -
    1. create a new CMP entity bean (a new row in DB table)
    2. create another new CMP entity bean that uses previous bean as foreignkey
    3. use JDBC to update the row just created
    And all these 3 calls have to be in one transaction.

  • How to execute findByPrimaryKey with CMP 2.0?

    Hi, I'm deploying a local entity bean. I know that I can run any finder method with CMP 2.x by declaring it as abtract in the bean implementation class and then by defining the query in the deployment descriptor. My question is: how do I run the findByPrimaryKey method? Shall I write a query element in the dd? How do I execute it from the client?

  • User interference with CMP transaction (illegal termination of transaction)

    Folks,
    Have any one encountered this error before ? Let me know the root cause of this error if you do know about it.
    thx.
    Rajesh.

    Hello.
    The error occurs when the method SmsOmniServiceBean.proceedOMNI() calls REMOTELY the method SmsOmniServiceBean.proceedOMNIinternal(). What is important is that the call is a remote call (using JNDI, the home and remote interface) that creates a new transaction (the method proceedOMNIinternal() transaction is defined as "requiresNew" in the ejb-jar.xml). This is done on purpose. If the proceedOMNIinternal() transaction is rolled back, we do not want that the whole transaction is rolled back.
    Please note that the calling method proceedOMNI() is execute in a loop inside another method (proceedOMNIAll()), and the exception is thrown at some random point in the loop: sometimes near the middle, sometimes near the end.
    Please note also that no entity bean are used in our application, nor in another application deployed on the server, so why "User interference with CMP" ?

  • Windows 7 with 11g ODBC install confusion...

    Hi all,
    Ok, I am just a little confused. All I need to do is get ODBC running under Windows 7. I figured this would be easy, but apparently not. I am trying to install Oracle 11g 64 bit on a new Win 7 computer. This is to set up a "typical" end user system and is NOT for development.
    I first went to the 11g download page (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/112010-win64soft-094461.html ) and downloaded the client software (win64_11gR2_client.zip). I unzipped and installed that. I was able to run NetAdmin and edit the TNSNAMES.ora file. However, when I ran the MS ODBC manager - there were no Oracle driver options. I tried this with both the InstantClient and Runtime options.
    So I figured I had missed something. I ran the deinstall and then did a system restore. I read the docs in the install and here on the forum and saw references to the instant client installs.
    It told me to download the Basic Instant Client and ODBC Instant Client packages from the Oracle Technology Network Instant Client page, so I went to link http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/winx64soft-089540.html and downloaded both the instant client (instantclient-basic-win-x86-64-11.2.0.1.0.zip) and the ODBC module (instantclient-odbc-win-x86-64-11.2.0.1.0.zip)
    I unzipped the client-basic first per the odbc docs. No docs, just a readme with no details. And nothing named install. I did see two .exe files (adrci.exe and genezi.exe) but netiher was a clear install package. Nor was there a .msi package. So, in reading the docs, I tried to determine if "deployed" meant unzipped or installed. So I unzipped the instant ODBC files into the instantclient_11_2 folder and ran the ODBC_install. There was no reference to NETADMIN in the startfolder, but there was an ODBC shortcut - which I ran. It showed the ODBC drivers, but when I got to the TNS Service Name and clicked on the "down arrow", all I saw were what appeared to be garbage entries. There was no TNSNAMES.ora file to be found.
    Ok, so now I reinstalled the initial download and then tried to add the ODBC stuff to that.... No luck.
    I Ran the universal installer and tried to get it to load the ODBC stuff - but there were no .xml files (which is what it apparently wants) to load. And when I tried to install the instant ODBC, the universal installer still didn't appear to see ODBC stuff...
    So I can install the first and be able to edit TNSNAMES.ORA. Or install the second and see an ODBC driver - but not configure it because I can't reference a TNSNAMES.ora file. Or do both and just get frustrated because both installs IGNORE the other....
    Oh, if I run the NetAdmin and create a TNSNAMES entry - when I test it, it can connect to the server. But I just can't get the ODBC Oracle driver to find that file.....
    IAC, what do I need to download (just the minimum oracle 11g) to an end user's win 7 x64 computer so that I can configure the TNSNAMES.ora settings and setup the ODBC connection?
    Anyway, I am sure there is an easy answer to this. And I would be happy to mark your response as an answer so you get the credit you deserve for helping me.
    And it would be even nicer if there was a little more support about ODBC in the docs that come with both the standard client and the instant client installs.
    Thanks,
    JustMe
    Edited by: justme on Feb 8, 2011 3:39 PM

    Greg,
    RE: Instant client.
    1) It did not come with a TNSNAMES.ora file nor was it clear where I would place the one I have so it would work.
    2) I did try enter a valid entry, but it would not work (my guess is that I didn't copy the TNSNAMES.ora to the right folder).
    RE: Standard install:
    1) It installed the TNSNAMES.ora file and apps to manage it. I was even able to test and confirm that it worked. But when I ran the MS ODBC manager, there were no references to the ORACLE drivers, so I couldn't create one to reference the TNSNAMES.ora file I had created.
    You have given me a few ideas and I will try some of them (running the standard install option in custom mode, copying the TNSNAMES.ora file to every folder in the instant client install, using just the 32 bit versions, etc.) If any of those work, I will report back. If you have any idea on how to resolve the above issues, I would certainly appreciate it as well.
    Thanks,
    JustMe

  • Oracle 8.1.7 driver limit causes problems with CMP

    The information below is from Oracle's site and has been noted by a few
    people on various message groups. We had upgraded to 8.1.7 but hadn't put
    the latest classes12.zip (June 2001) in our classpath. When we do, we get
    the following error from the driver/generated code. We believe this is
    because we are hitting the limit cited below. I don't know why the Oracle
    driver has this limit, but since WL generates this code for the EB, I don't
    see an easy way for us to avoid it.
    Anyone have any comments on this? Is my interpretation of the stacktrace
    correct? If we go back to the old classes12.zip (June 2000) then we don't
    have this problem. But in addition to wanting to run the matching zip file
    with the version of the DB, we also want to use some of the functionality in
    the 8.1.7 zip. Does BEA have a workaround for CMP?

    Using Streams to Avoid Limits on setBytes() and setString()
    There is a limit on the maximum size of the array which can be bound using
    the PreparedStatement class setBytes() method, and on the size of the string
    which can be bound using the setString() method.
    Above the limits, which depend on the version of the server you use, you
    should use setBinaryStream() or setCharacterStream() instead.
    When connecting to an Oracle8 database, the limit for setBytes() is 2000
    bytes (the maximum size of a RAW in Oracle8) and the limit for setString()
    is 4000 bytes (the maximum size of a VARCHAR2 in Oracle8).
    When connecting to an Oracle7 database, the limit for setBytes() is 255
    bytes (the maximum size of a RAW in Oracle7) and the limit for setString()
    is 2000 bytes (the maximum size of a VARCHAR2 in Oracle7).
    The 8.1.6 Oracle JDBC drivers may not raise an error if you exceed the limit
    when using setBytes() or setString(), but you may receive the following
    error:
    ORA-17070: Data size bigger than max size for this type
    Future versions of the Oracle drivers will raise an error if the length
    exceeds these limits.

    I added some debug output to verify that this problem is definitely caused
    by the WL generated code/Oracle driver. To do this, I used
    the -keepgenerated code on ejbc. Then I modified the generated code to
    print the length of the byte array before calling setBytes. I compiled the
    class and put an updated version in my bean jar.
    When I run our test suite, I see hundreds of calls to setBytes with sizes
    such as 315, 368, 1988, 2020. And then occasionally there are sizes of
    41932 or 19409. These larger sizes are always followed by the ORA-01483
    exceptions.
    This appears to be certain confirmation that the problem is caused by the
    8.1.7 driver's enforcement of the 4k limit on the methods that the
    WL-generated code is using to map our Java byte[] to our Long Raw/BLOB field
    in Oracle. Any suggestions for workarounds?Actually, it indicates the driver's being caught by the limitation that
    Oracle itself imposes with setBytes(). This is a known issue I believe, and
    you should ask support for a patch to ejbc that generates calls to setBinaryStream()
    rather than setBytes().

    don't
    have this problem. But in addition to wanting to run the matching
    zip
    file
    with the version of the DB, we also want to use some of the
    functionality
    in
    the 8.1.7 zip. Does BEA have a workaround for CMP?

    Using Streams to Avoid Limits on setBytes() and setString()
    There is a limit on the maximum size of the array which can be
    bound
    using
    the PreparedStatement class setBytes() method, and on the size of
    the
    string
    which can be bound using the setString() method.
    Above the limits, which depend on the version of the server you
    use,
    you
    should use setBinaryStream() or setCharacterStream() instead.
    When connecting to an Oracle8 database, the limit for setBytes()
    is
    2000
    bytes (the maximum size of a RAW in Oracle8) and the limit forsetString()
    is 4000 bytes (the maximum size of a VARCHAR2 in Oracle8).
    When connecting to an Oracle7 database, the limit for setBytes()
    is
    255
    bytes (the maximum size of a RAW in Oracle7) and the limit forsetString()
    is 2000 bytes (the maximum size of a VARCHAR2 in Oracle7).
    The 8.1.6 Oracle JDBC drivers may not raise an error if you exceed
    the
    limit
    when using setBytes() or setString(), but you may receive the
    following
    error:
    ORA-17070: Data size bigger than max size for this type
    Future versions of the Oracle drivers will raise an error if thelength
    exceeds these limits.
