Email server setup

I have setup DNS and an mx record; I've tested it and all is fine.  I am now setting up the mail server, what I am interested in is how the server knows which emails are for which user.  Is it just via the email prefix and the short name of the user.
The reason I am asking is I have two domains and I am using one to test the email server setup before applying the settings to my working domain as the emails are very important.

  • Easier way to get an email server running?

This is probably going to sound noobish and ranty, and I apologize in advance for that, but I really am looking for an answer. Google has not been very helpful so far.
I currently have a VPS which I use for misc stuff, including hosting some websites. I would like to get email working, so that I can send/receive email on my website domains (via gmail or clients, not webmail).
I have read through several forum posts and various articles regarding email servers using postfix, dovecot, mysql, etc. Most tutorials on getting an email server setup contain walls of configuration settings that you need to make. They use separate programs for sending email, receiving email, full-blown databases for user accounts... It feels severely over-engineered, and I feel like my head is going to explode while trying to understand what the heck is going on.
Is there really no easier way to do this? People in forums talk about postfix being the best and easiest there is, but a wall of configuration text that doesn't make sense doesn't seem easy to me. Yeah I could probably copy/paste that text into my configuration files, and yeah it'd probably work, but I wouldn't understand how or why it worked, and I wouldn't be able to make future changes.
I would think that there would be a single package out there, a single program, that you could handle everything email (at least as far as sending/receiving email via IMAP). Kind of like how you have a web server like Apache or Nginx, where it's a single program that works out of the box, and can be configured further afterwards. Why does email have to be so difficult? I can only assume that things are setup this way in order to cover every possible configuration of email services that anyone could possibly want on any scale. But I just want a simple email server, on a single server, with just a few common options. Are there any alternatives, or is postfix+dovecot+mysql+spamd+opendkim really the only real option on linux right now?
(And before anyone says to develop something myself... yeah, it's tempting... but why spend time reinventing the wheel if it's already out there, right?)

A "web server" is rarely just Apache (or nginx, lighttpd etc) on it's own. There's often additional tools such as PHP, MySQL etc as well.
A "mail server" is the same; an encompassing term for a collection of tools that each handle different aspects. Postfix and Dovecot is all you need for what you've described; Postfix handles mail delivery (inbound mail to your users, and outbound mail from your users) while Dovecot handles presenting the received mail to your users. IMHO, it follows the Unix philosophy very well; one tool, one job. (All working together).
Postfix might seem daunting, but it is actually very well documented, inside the configuration file itself (main.cf) and on the website. This page may be a good place to start: http://www.postfix.org/STANDARD_CONFIGU … EADME.html
I'd suggest get Postfix working delivering inbound and outbound mail, then you can add Dovecot (or IMAP daemon of your choice) once that's up and running.

  • AT&T Email Server Set Up on Samsung Charge Android Problem

Has anyone had this same problem?
Problem: I get "Setup could not finish - Cannot connect to server" error when trying to update AT&T email (sbcglobal.net) server settings.  AT&T changed email server setup on December 11th.  I can get the correct setup and connection via Windows Mail on my Vista desktop pc.  AT&T email server settings can be found here => http://www.att.com/updatesettings.  Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem and spent time on the AT&T help line but they could not help with the Verizon Samsung Droid issue.  I got my Outlook to work on the desktop and the setup is basically the same.  I think the problem is in the Desktop setup in E-Mail Settings on the Advanced Tab there is a check box with a label that says "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) that AT&T requires to be checked.  The email setup form on the Samsung Droid does not have that check box or option, so the server will not let the phone connect.
Did you get your issue resolved?

Only if you set up a separate POP3 or IMAP4 account in your GW client.

  • Mail Server setup - EM 10.2.0.1.0

On Mail Server setup (EM 10.2.0.1.0) doesn't exists the options to set the User Name and Password, for authentication.
How do I configure a user authentication for the SMTP server?

You have to provide valid values for only the follwing two fields:
    1 Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server
    2 and Sender's E-mail Address
Optionally you cand enter something in the Identify Sender As that will be used in the email body as an alias for the email address.
It should work. I tested this a few moments earlier.

We are using workflow and when it fails it we are sending the notification mail to the user on his company mail id, i.e. [email protected]
This is working in the current production system. We are doing the new development which will replace the current production system. The existing Basis team does not know how it was setup in production system and how to set it up in the new system.
When we send any mail notification from workflow we can see the mail in SCOT transaction but it is not received at the specified mail address.
Can any one provide the configuration steps or any document for this.

Roadrunner is POP email, and the feature you are looking for
is a function of IMAP email. Roadrunner has not announced
any plans to make IMAP available. If this is important to you,
get a gmail account (which can be setup as IMAP)  and configure
your Roadrunner account to automatically forward emails to the

  • Lion Server setup & Time Capsule

    Greetings,
I am new to lion server so please bear with me. Some of my question me seem dumb to some of you. But to me the only dumb question is one not asked. So please bear with me.
Server and time capsule will both do NAT, DHCP. Which should I use for the network Server or Time Capsule. I am connecting with a Brighthouse cable modem with a Dynamic IP. I have the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode with a static IP 192.168.0.6. The server is Static with 192.168.0.5. Brighthouse wireless is disabled as I like the time capsule wireless. Time capsule is providing WI-FI. Brighthouse router/Modem provides the Router at 192.168.0.1.
I have a domain name abc.net. Should I set up lion server first and then set up Time Capsule after it is working? Do I set this up as a .local, .private or .net account during server setup? I want to be able to get to my computer from my domain name and handle my mail.
I set this up once and it worked for about 2 hours. After that it would never see my computer. So I am setting up server again but wanted to see if I could get a little first time guidence this time. I also signed up with DYNDNS for DNS updating and that just seemed to throw a whole new batch of problems in.
So any help would be great... Not dumb with computers, but new to apple servers. And I don't do geek well!!
I think all the IP numbers, what I need to change on Netfirms to get to my computer get me confused in the setup.
    Thanks

Server and time capsule will both do NAT, DHCP
    Sure.
Which should I use for the network Server or Time Capsule
Why do you think you need to use either of them?
Ideally, you should have ONE device on your network running NAT, and ONE device running DHCP.
From your description it sounds like your Brighthouse router is running NAT therefore there is no need to run NAT anywhere else.
The chances are that the Brighthouse router is also running a DHCP server for your LAN, therefore there is also no need to run DHCP off the Time Capsule or the Server. You've already got those bases covered.
So, at least without more information, I'd be inclined to say: neither.
Should I set up lion server first and then set up Time Capsule after it is working?
Probably. It depends on what your plans are for the Time Capsule. If you're using the TC as a wireless base station then it doesn't need to be running until you're ready to connect wireless clients.
If you're using the TC for backup, you don't need it until your server and/or clients are setup and ready to backup.
Since the TC is not (as per the above) running either NAT or DHCP, there's not much else to do with it.
    So focus on the server.
Do I set this up as a .local, .private or .net account during server setup?
That's entirely up to you, although there are a couple of options. First off, though, realize that there is no, zip, nada connection between the hostname you use on your internal LAN and any public domain. It's 100% valid for your server to be called foo.bar while serving web content for abc.net and getting email for xzy.com, all at the same time.
Personally, I tend to set them the same (e.g. abc.net in this case), but others will recommend a different approach. It's largely personal preference.
I want to be able to get to my computer from my domain name and handle my mail.
If you're talking about getting to your computer/mail from an external locale, that's 100% down to DNS and completely independent of what the server thinks its own name is.

  • Email account setup failure

AT&T 8310 Curve - I have one e-mail address set up and working fine: IMAP
Trying to set up a slightly more complex one fails.
The differences with the second account are:
    It uses SSL.
The mail server is NOT the same as the domainaname in the e-mail address.
The username is NOT the same as the part before @ in the email address.
The email address is: [email protected]
    Server is  mail-amer.isp.com
    Username is: ABC123
    Service is IMAP/SSL
So, when I try to "Set up an existing account" -- web/pc (but same result from BB).
I enter email address [email protected] and password.
This fails, as I would expect. I then choose the option to provide the details myself.
    I enter:
    Username: ABC123
    Password: ******
    Email Server: mail-amer.isp.com
    Email address: [email protected]
It tries to set up, but fails.
I am assuming that it will try SSL - Port 993 since I can't specify this.
    It should work, but doesn't.
The text on the setup form worries me. although I selected ISP POP/IMAP the form is entitled "Set up existing Outlook / Outlook Express account" -- Which is NOT what I am trying to do.
Similarly, the comments under the entry fields seem to be wrong.
For username it says "(e.g. jdoe or [email protected])"  -- well, my username isn't the first part of the email addr.
Anyway - whatever - it fails to work.
Of course, there seems to be no way to contact anyone with a clue to get this set up ... any suggestions are welcome!

when it fails ( you can make it fail by providing wrog password): Choose this is my work email account -> I will provide the settings to add this email account   -> in the server name try using IP address: 216.126.204.65 ( this is what came when i used 'mail-amer.isp.com', is its diferentmail server, get the correct IP address) and then also make sure the user name is correct (it could be 'jdoe' or your full email address, try both).

  • What are the reasons why Server Assistant won't detect Auto Server Setup ?

    Hi there,
I've been having issues with Auto Server Setup mechanism (the mechanism that allows an administrator to install a machine without human user interaction). I actually have the answer to my post question but I post it anyway because it might help someone that stumbles on the same issue. Moreover, the answer raises other questions about licencing.
I had the problem that I had created a NetInstall image that had a "/Auto Server Setup/generic.plist" file; this worked perfectly on the XServe I was testing it on : when I started the client in NetBoot mode, the client was installing without any human interaction, from the disk formatting to the login window... all this was pefectly good. Then I tried to install another machine by starting it in NetBoot mode : the machine installed the system and then waited for human interaction for the configuration step in Server Assistant, as is there was no "/Auto Server Setup/generic.plist" file....
I finally managed to figure out what was wrong (not thanks to Apple, as I couldn't find any clue : no message from "Server Assistant", nothing useful in the logs I found just by luck in /Library/Logs/ServerAssistant.log) : my "/Auto Server Setup/generic.plist" was ignored because of the Mac OS X licence key. When I replaced the key in generic.plist with another key, it started working again. I know that the official documentation says to use site licences when using the generic.plist mechanism but at least an error message somewhere would have helped...
So, it seems that "Server Assistant" talks to apple servers and refuses to use a licence key that is used somewhere else. These policies are perfectly fine, as long as it works and it is consistent, which I'm not convinced of :
    - first, we had success in the past in duplicating Mac OS X 10.5 system disk images (we have lots of xserves with valid licence keys but we found it easier to duplicate system disk images) on our xserves, and even if all xserves had the same osx server licence key, they worked fine (except that Server Admin doesn't like it). As a result, the licence verification policy is inconsistent as it depends on the way mac osX is installed...
    - second, I'm not sure this licence checking mechanism even works : I beleive that apple registers associations between a machine id and a licence key; then, how does apple guarantees that this association (therefore free the licence key) is removed when you format a system hard drive (there is no other way to uninstall Mac OSX, right ?) ?
Does anyone knows how licence key registration works and more specifically how licence keys get freed for reuse on another machine ?

    Hi Stephen,
To login, the internal server should be: https://boot.ciscojabbervideo.com/endpoint/configuration
The external server and domain fields are blank.
Your username only needs the prefix of your @jabber.com video address.  For example, if your video address is [email protected] then your username is "stephen."
Unfortunately, there is only forum support for this free service.

  • Email server verizon lte

    Hi!
I recently switched Internet Service Providers from Hughes.net (satellite) to a Verizon mi-fi device.  I'd like to establish an email account that will afford me the ability to continue using the mail program on my iMac, versus using Safari to access hotmail, etc.  I don't believe there is a way to do this with Verizon since I simply have a mi-fi device.  Are there mail servers that you can subscribe to and create an email address that would feed directly into the mail program on my iMac?
    Thanks!
    Bryan

Dave - thanks for responding to my question.  Can I do that with any email server (@yahoo.com, hotmail.com, etc.)?  Do I just add the email account under mail>preferences>accounts then setup accordingly?  Thanks have a good evening Dave.

  • Email Server Set up

Ok, I'm not new to Macs but I am new to setting up the emai service.  I just took the Server Essentials course and learned how to set up an email server using OS X but I am unable to take what I've learned and use it in our environment.  A little background:
We're running OS X Server 10.5.8 on a 2x2.3 ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Xserve with 6gb of RAM.
Our mail is POP, hosted by a hosting provider.
We do have a VPN connection.
What I am trying to do (or to find out if I CAN do this) is set up a local mail server to capture all email so we don't have to continuously backup the individual workstations.  It would also be very helpful to have a central Address Book.  In addition, most of our users are laptop users (all Mac) and may need to connect remotely.
    So my questions are these:
How do you set up a mail server for an existing hosted POP account?
If you set up a mail server, how do people get their mail on remote devices, like phones, iPads...?
Would a centralized mail server allow for searching of individual emails?
Any help I can get here would be greatly appreciated.  I'm an IT manager but I'm expected to know everything about everything (including electrical work).  Every other place or person Ive gone to has been thoroughly specialized and not able to help me with my specific needs.

You would have to transition all your users to the new mail server hosted in-house. You really can't have two separate email systems (other than in a redundancy config) running together. There may be some possible kludge to make that work, but it's probably more work and risky than just hosting all email internally.
DNS will have to point to the proper machine and MX record for mail to flow in and out. My recommendation here is to do this over weekends when no one is usually working and to get DNS working first before moving on to running mail services. This all does pre-suppose that you have a registered domain name (example.com) for this to work, yes?
Based on your requirements, as Camelot pointed out, I would go with an IMAP-only setup. Emails from the POP server/accounts can be transferred to their IMAP account. When I did exactly what you are looking at, I had all users create a NEW distinctly named IMAP email account in their mail client, because it is very probable that your old server will still be active and accessible until you terminate your email services with them. Users can then move their emial folders and messages to your internal server right in the mail client. After they have moved their messages, they can disable the old POP account and run solely on your email server.
Mail storage files can get sizable regardless of the system environment. Email attachments are the real killer in IMAP configs: big attachments, or lots of smaller ones, balloon the email store directory usage. Consider implementing quotas and attachment size limits if is seems appropriate for your environment. (Just yesterday I had to ask one of my users to prune out his emails - his mail store was in excess of 9GB - and threatened quotas if he didn't get a little more proactive on weeding his email folders regularly.)
Would a centralized mail server allow for searching of individual emails?
Only to the same extent that users can search within their own emails. Searching accross accounts - like Tom searching in Jim's emails - isn't allowed at the user level. At admin level, on the server, you could do some grep searches in command line but even that's a little dodgy given the sacrosanct nature that cyrus invokes permissions-wise on contents of the imap/user/ directories.
so we don't have to continuously backup the individual workstations
That works, only to the extent that you are backing up your server. (And Time Machine backups of/on your server and NOT a bulletroof backup solution.)  Even then, not having clients backed up is not a wise strategy either. Time Machine is fine at the user/client level, but have a robust backup strategy for your server in place.
    HTH,
    -Doug

  • Ios7.1.2 email server authentication error

We have a problem sending email using iMail client on a) iPad (ios7.1.2(11D257) and b) iMac (Auto updating Mavericks OS10). However, we can send email from iPad (ios7.1.1 (11D201). All three devices can receive email.
All machines use the same email account and servers. All are using the same email client. All have been working effectively for past 4 years - the problem started about 1 month ago.
Have spent "hours" with email service provider to troubleshoot the problem. Here is a list of the steps we have taken:
    1) checked email servers, confirming that email accounts can both send and receive email. This included testing via a webmail client, and from a Microsoft Outlook client. In both cases the tests confirmed that email can be received AND sent via the email server.
    2) setup alternate email servers, on different ports, on iPad - can always receive email but cannot send. The error message that is received is "username or password for 'mail.iinet.net.au' is incorrect"
    3) deleted email accounts and rest device to wipe it clean, then started from scratch - can establish the email account, can receive email, but still get the same error message when trying to send email "username of password for 'mail.iinet.net.au' is incorrect"
    4) tried alternative email client (CloudMagic, Evomail, Canonball) - not possible to connect to the email account, typical error is "unable to verify your account information"
    5) tried to setup account on iPhone across mobile phone network to isolate whether problem was local WiFi - same result
The only thing that has shone any light on this was when we identified the outgoing mail server as "mailout.comhem,se" with no authentication. With this setting email would send. This could suggest a problem with the WiFi network, but it has been working perfectly well up till now, and on other WiFi networks. It also does not explain the problem with iMac from home which is directly connected to an ADSL service provided by our email service provider (no intermediary in play at all).  This also means that for every new WiFi network that I use (I travel a lot) I will need to find the details of an intermediate outgoing mail server for the specific WiFi provider. It is not clear why routing through an intermediary email server overcomes the authentication error at the destination email server, unless there is some more fundamental problem at play.
The authentication error has been isolated to somewhere between the device and the server - could there be some ios7.1.2 issue at play that is causing the authentication to fail, but not when directed through an intermediary mail server?
This problem is deeply frustrating, and any help would be greatly appreciated

I haven't ran across this, but I do see that there is no SQL Instance Name in your screenshot. Try putting SQLTMS in there and then click next and see what happens. Or if you know the name of your TMS database instance, put that in there.

  • Why do we have to manually recreate our accounts each time the email server goes down?

On very infrequent occassions (fortunately), our email server will go off-line.  Whenever this happens, every one of us has to login to the Blackberry Internet Service website to reenter the account information.  This is very annyoing.  Why doesn't it just automatically reconnect when the email server goes back up?

No idea why. I'm guessing the the BIS system goes to check for email and can't find the account.  Then it sends you the email to revalidate and it won't check again until you do.  If it was setup to check too many times with, say, a wrong password, it may lock the account.  This is only a guess on my part.
Your people with accounts setup like this should know how to go to their email setup on their device and validate the password.  It's not very complicated and takes only a moment.
