Empty printer file!

After successfully following the directions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107054 due to a "server-error-service-unavailable" message, I was able to add the printer Dell Laser 1720 (driver downloaded from Dell site). When I try to print, it spools quickly and says "empty printer file!" Then everything stops and there is nothing in the status box ready to print. The Dell Laser Printer icon is in the dock. The printer is on & connected via USB, it prints out device information.
What to do to start printing??

...and I just stumbled over the solution:
When entering the Print&Fax in the System Preferences, ctrl+click on the printer list. This resets all printer-related settings.
After re-installing all printers, everything works again.
I think this function should be less hidden - maybe a menu button instead of a key-combination?

Go to System Preferences>Print & Fax>Open Print Queue, select(highlight) any jobs and delete them. Do this for all printers in the left side bar (select printer when you click Open Print Queue)

Anyone out there have an idea on how to solve an "Empty print file!" error?

I am trying print to a Lexmark C543 network printer from a PowerPC G5 (running 10.5.7). Prior to receiving the error message (Empty print file!) the print queue displays the following messages: “Looking for Lexmark C543” and then “The printer is now on-line”.
Now there is a twist, I can successfully print test pages, pdf files (only using Adobe Reader 9.1.2, not the Apple Preview application), and image files (only using Adobe Lightroom 2.4, not the Apple Preview application). If I try and print a webpage using Safari (4.0.1) or Word document using Word:MAC 2008 version 12.1.9 it will error out, unless I print it to a PDF and then reopen the file via Adobe Reader.
Here are the actions I have already tried, and didn’t work?
- Removed and installed printer (both via GUI and CUPS)
- Reset printer system
- Verify Disk (no problems found)
- Repaired Disk Permissions
- Removed/renamed all files I could find in Library and System relating to C543
- Downloaded and installed new driver
- Called Lexmark, “3rd Level support looked at the issue and the log and they concluded that it's a problem with the OS.”

Thank you for welcoming me to Apple Discussions as well as explaining what you saw in the log.
I downloaded and ran the 10.5.7 Combo updater, but unfortunately it did not resolve my empty print file error.
Print Therapy (version 6.0.5) you suggested (and I downloaded) looked very promising. Unfortunately it too did not resolve my empty print file error. I have included the Print Therapy log below in hopes it will shed more light on the problem. The Print Therapy log stated: "You may need to reinstall OS X to resolve your printing issues." I am assuming this is probably because of the three missing files/directories it found.
Please let me know what my next steps should be, and if I should reinstall Leopard. If I have to reinstall Leopard is it possible to just install on top of the existing version without loosing or destroying the files (documents, images, etc.) we created?

HP Office jet 6700 ,trying to print and it will say Printer Ready, Empty Print File !

I have a HP Office Jet 6700. I'm trying to print a document , it will say prining Untitled . The printer queue will open up and say printer is ready, empty print file,Idle.
It automatically goes into paused printer. When I try to click on the document itself in the print queue and resume print it gives the same message again.
The Power on the actual printer is flashing slowly as well.
I hae restarted my computer and shut down the printer completey multiple times and it still has not worked. I just printed something on this last night so I'm not sure what the probelm is.

I read your post about the printing issues you've been experiencing on your Mac running 10.6 and your Officejet 6700. I have a few ideas in mind to get started and let me know the results and we will take it from there.
Update the Firmware on the printer: Getting the Latest Firmware and Product Updates
Power reset the printer and make sure the printer is plugged in directly to the wall outlet, avoiding power bars and surge protectors. This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help greatly.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
Make a few copies afterwards and tell me if the copies pause, cancel, do not work, etc.
Try printing from Text Edit on your Mac as well, and get back to me with the results.

Removing Printer Files

My trusty old iBook only has a small hard drive (30 gig ) and I don't really want to replace the hard drive at this stage as I'm hoping to upgrade sooner than later. However until that happy day things are getting rather tight with available space on the hard drive, I do keep as much as possible on an external drive and have gained some extra space by removing all applications I don't use. I came across a handy program ( Monolingual ) that removed language files I'll never use and gained an extra gig+, I was wondering if anyone knows if you can do the same type of thing with the huge number of printer files stored in the main library which again I will never need, or by removing these will cause problems elsewhere.
Any ideas?

Go to Library/Receipts. If there are printer software .pkg's there that you know you don't need, just send them to the trash, empty the trash and reboot.

I have been using Adobe forms for a year or so. Now I have the need to merge together 2 PDF print files into 1 within the same ABAP program before writing the file to my server. Empty Log File - log settings will not save

Description of Problem or Question:
Cannot get logging to work in folder D:\Program Files\Business Objects\Dashboard and Analytics 12.0\server\log
(empty log file is created)

What has already been tried (where have you searched for a solution to your question/problem):

Steps to Reproduce (if applicable):
From InfoViewApp, logged in as Admin
Open ->Dashboard and Analytics Setp -> Parameters -> Trace
Check "Log to folder" and "SQL Queries", Click Apply.
Now, navigate away and return to this page - the "Log to folder" is unchecked. Empty log file is created.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Do a backup.
Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

I can't help with the scan/print problem. You seem to have done everything I would try.
I don't know if maybe using a registry cleaner would help.

Can't empty GarageBand files from trash

I am creating GarageBand files; when I move them to trash and then try to empty the trash, I get a message saying I need to make sure they are "unlocked" and permissons are all okay, and then it gives me two options: Stop or Continue, neither of which successfully deletes the file from the trash.
I have gone to the file's "Get Info" and confirmed the the "Locked" box is NOT checked, and that my permissions are "Read and Write" and I've even tried to unlock the little lock at the bottom of the Get Info screen. To no avail, I still cannot empty the file from the trash.
I have checked user communities and tried to hold down the Option Key while I empty the trash. One time out of 4 or 5, this works. I have also tried to hold down the Option AND shift keys at the same time while I empty the trash. No difference.
The only thing that seems to work is one user's suggestion to open the "Terminal" utility and type in some command that supposedly resets permissions and empties the trash and fixes everything. This has worked both times I've done it, but then the next time I put a new file into the trash, it's once again back to being stuck and "locked."
I'm not sure whether to post this in GarageBand community or Lion/general pages, so I may do both...but can anyone help me here?

How do I print a disk-saved HP Officejet 6500 printer file?

This morning I did not have any ink in my black HP 920 ink cartridge - so I saved a print ready document as a printer file on my hard drive. I now have a new ink cartridge in my HP Officejet 6500 Wireless printer. How do I print the disk file - if there is any way to load it to the printer "documents" printing file in Windows 7 - What name does it need to have - how long can the name be and how do I load the file to print in "documents" or just plain print the document? Whatever help can be provided - I'll appreciate!

You could try creating 'paper' the size of the #12 envelope, and try that possibly.

Printing files on the application server

Hi,
I am looking for ways to print files residing on the application server. Do you know of any function modules/transaction code that can do this?
Here is my situation:
I am using GRAPH_PRINT_POSTSCRIPT_FILE to print postscript file to the printer. I have no problem using this FM. The issue is that this function only prints files residing on the PC/local computer. It doesn't print any files on the application server.

Hp laserjet printer pro m1217 print file was not accepted Mac

I connected my printer wirelessly via Bonjour. It is connected but for some reason doesn't print, giving me an error message: "print file was not accepted."
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I understand your HP Laserjet m1217 is setup wirelessly but wont print from the the mac and you are getting a error message "print file was not accepted".
If your are using 10.8 then make sure when you added the driver you added the printer name m1217 and not the airprint driver that is preinstalled on the mac.
Please provide the Mac operating system you are on for further assistance.

What is "Error 42 at Print File.vi" in LabVIEW 3.1.1?

I have an ancient system running a LabVIEW 3.1.1 exe under Windows 3.1. It has worked for years, but now I get a popup "Error 42 occured at print file.vi" whenever it tries to print. I can click ok on this message and print the file just fine from the OS. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

First, let me say I'm amazed that somebody is actually still running LabVIEW 3.1.1. On Windows 3.1, no less. Is this system like, sitting in a basement somewhere, and you have to use old-fashioned oil lamps to get light down there?
Error 42 is a generic error. It could mean anything. Literally. It's the favorite error for at least one person.

Can't create a new illustration. Problems occurred while saving the print file.

I opened a previous document created in CC, but it will not allow me to copy and paste items from one doc to another.

Is a printer connected? Is it turned ON? Is the driver up to date?
Illustrator checks this every time and also writes information on the printer into the file.
