Enable A Guest Account So We Could Save Restriction Settings

How about a setting that will enable at boot up an option to log in main user (admin) or Guest account? And in the main user's restriction settings allow you to configure what apps the guest account can access. Then all you would have to do is set that 4 character password prompt for main user and allow guest to log in without a password. Then depending on your restriction settings you could make this thing a little bit more secure for families and multiple users. Any app purchases would still be under main user and need a password. I think this is doable. So say we all! ?

I guess I don't see it as a personal device. Since it has the ability to replace what most users use a laptop for. iPhone's size was holding it back from being the netbook killer. Now we have the larger version the iPad. iPad's OS has already started of on it's own path from the iPhone OS. So why not just put some chrooted dummy guest account option in it. So the multiple user household can have some way to save restriction settings and protect the main account.
My kids (5 and 3)are very good with my old G4 iBook and 1st Gen iPhone. Although there was that one time my son pulled all the keys off the iBook and the iPhone has been dropped like a hundred times on the hardwood but it still works.
If iPad is going to be a wonderful tool to help educate my kids since I didn't have to show my kids how to work the iPhone. They just figured it out. I hope some good EDU apps come out soon.

Airlines request that all devices be turned off during take-off and landing.
I turn Airplane mode on before powering my iPhone off when so instructed. When the announcement is made that devices can be turned on, when I power my iPhone on Airplane mode remains enabled. I can then turn on wi-fi only for wi-fi access.
I'm not sure how this can be anything other than a two step process, unless there is an additional Airplane mode setting that includes having wi-fi enabled.

  • HT201304 Save restriction settings

Is there a way to save restrictions settings so they dont reset every time I turn them off? Our children use our iPad so we enable the restrictions so they CAN'T buy and delete apps. Everytime I turn these off to use for myself they seem to reset and when turning back on I have to set all the settings again.

I agree - let us set the restrictions once and then enable/disable as needed.  One easy example is that I restrict access to the App store along with installing or deleting applications for my son but when I want to add/delete an app, I disable restrictions and when done, I have to go in and reestablish ALL of the restricitions I want.

  • Window NT Guest account enabled?

IS there another way to print a report across Windows NT domains, without enabling the guest account?

@V.K., Thank you for your help! That completely solved the problem. Now when I think about it, I remember changing the root password some time ago. I guess that's what have caused the issue.

  • Yosemite GM Candidate Installed - Guest account keeps being re-enable after reboot

Have the Yosemite GM Candidate Installed (been using 10.10 beta since about end of July).  I've never had this issue prior to the GM Candidate.
I never enable the Guest account on the system (force login for a user, etc.).  I disable the Guest account, reboot, and the Guest account is re-enabled and can be logged into.  Disable it again, reboot - it's back.
Potential fix anyone is aware of?

  • FileVault 2 guest account is greyed out

Yesterday I performed a clean install of OS X Lion for my MBP (early 2011) had some kernel panics recently and I was told that it could be a software related problem. Anyway I installed all of the updates, switched on File Vault, Back to my Mac and everything's looking good except for I can't access the guest account. When booting there's no prompt for signing into the guest account and in system preferences the guest is greyed out.
Before my clean install I had File Vault enabled as well and there was a guest account I could log in to. I'm not sure what's wrong but I suspect a problem with Software Update. I already had to install several updates manually but am not sure if there's still something missing.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Word 365 not lauching under administrator account but works under guest account

    Hello,
Problem: Word 365 does not open and wants to repair itself. All other office programs work fine.
Strangely Word works fine under guest account.
Did the repair (brief, complete). Uninstalled office (with the FixIt and O15CTRRemove) and reinstalled it numerous times; went through the registry and removed all occurances of Office or Word and reinstalled office: no change. Safe mode or Winword /a don't
    launch either.
I posted this question 9 months ago:
http://community.office365.com/en-us/f/172/t/213900.aspx (gave up word in the mean time). Paid $100 for "Premium MS support" and waisted 3 hours with no solution !!!!!
In browsing found something similar (unfortunately in French):
http://answers.microsoft.com/fr-fr/office/forum/office_365hp-word/word-a-rencontr%C3%A9-un-probl%C3%A8me-qui/375d2082-ca22-4839-bb1c-1962c3caf741. So I enabled the guest account and Word works fine in that account. The second solution about the Bluetooth
    add-on did not work.
Do I have to go work under the guest account ???
What is the difference / problem ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
We have definitely heard your frustration, and we're thinking about ways to help better for you.
Would you like to share us which suggestions you have tried, except repair/ reinstall?
I reviewed your other thread, the event log is French. Thus, I translate it, the error message like:
"We're sorry, but Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Word will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now."
If it is, please try the two methods:
    Method 1:
    a.  go the path: C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office 15
                            C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office 15\root\Office 15
    b. Right click on Winword.exe > Properties.
    c. Click on Compatibility tab, uncheck the box ‘Run this program in
    compatibility mode’.
    d. Click on Apply and click on ok.
    Similar issue:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-word/keep-getting-error-were-sorry-but-word-has-run/b9a014db-c4c6-46aa-95b1-679308735f66
    Method 2:
    Removed Abbyy Finereader
    Similar issue:

    ==============
Then, if this issue still exists. I suppose this issue might be caused by the administrator account profile. Please try to re-create a new administrator account to test. If Word could works well with a new administrator account. We'd better check the original
    administrator account profile and
    repair it.
    Hope it's helpful.

  • Creating Guest Account Crashes System Preferences

I recently replaced an old mac mini G4 with the newest low end mac mini, the 1.83ghz core 2 duo with combo drive model.
I restored everything to the new machine with my time machine backup. Unfortunately, the guest account didn't get restored, and when I try to enable the guest account, System preferences crashes, so in order to do anything I have to force quit system prefs. After force quitting system prefs, I am unable to open applications using the dock. I have to reboot the computer in order to get anything to work again, but somehow enabling the guest account just wont work, and always crashes.
What can I do to fix this?

It happened to me also, on my imac and my MacBook Air.
It seems that user account migration somehow confuses the "guest user" machinery, which totally trashes securityd which dies of sudden death and from then on nothing works on the computer.
The solution is to do the following in System Preferences:
    0. Your system guest account must be disabled (it already is if you have the described symptoms).
    1. Create new standard account with name "guest" and short name "guest".
IMPORTANT: short name must be "guest" - OS will suggest "guest1", but you must edit that into "guest".
    2. Enable system guest account in System Preferences (check the "Allow guests to log into this computer" switch). It will work now that "guest" name is taken.
This action will create user account with short name "guest1" with all the properties of guest (clean-up after logout etc.).
    3. Completely delete standard user "guest", which you created in step 1 (check "delete all data and folder now").
    4. Disable system guest account (uncheck the switch).
    5. Right-click on system guest account icon and choose "Advanced" or whatever (there is only one menu item anyway) and change short name from "guest1" to "guest".
    6. Enable system guest account.
Voila. You now have working guest account (well, I have it, and hopefully you will, too)...
P.S. I am not sure whether you need to log-in/out/restart between steps. I remember I did some of that dance, but probably it is not necessary...

  • Strange behavior with System Preferences involving Guest Account

I work for a company that primarily uses macs and I have recently been asked to enable the Guest Account on all of them (as well as a general staff login). In doing this, I have come across at least one computer (they all run 10.5.5 or 10.5.6) where it seems impossible to enable the Guest Account. Here is what happens:
    1. I open System Preferences, go to the Accounts pane, authenticate, and click on the Guest Account.
    2. I check the option to "Allow guests to log into this computer" and a little busy sign shows for a second.
    3. I click on another account in the list on the left.
    4. When I click back to the Guest Account, the checkbox is unchecked. Also, the Guest Account does not appear in the fast user switch menu.
After tinkering around a little bit, I found that there was a "Guest" home folder in the Users folder. I thought that this was strange because I thought that this folder is created when you actually log into the guest account (I checked on another computer and found that this was indeed the case). I then deleted this "Guest" home folder and emptied the trash.
I again went through the same steps I did above (with a Finder window on the Users folder displayed) and found that when I check the box to enable the Guest Account, a "Guest" home folder appears in the Users folder. I deleted and repeated this process a number of times, all with the same result. I then began looking around for other occurrences of this problem.
At some point, I came across this discussion, which seemed to pose a possible solution: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9176908#9176908
As suggested in that thread, I tried creating a standard user with a home folder by the name of "Guest" or "guest". I filled in all the fields but when I clicked on "Create Account", it seems to work and then goes back to the Accounts preference pane except that the account I just created +*is not there!*+ I then tried this while the "Guest" home folder existed in the Users folder and it brings up a window asking whether I want to use the current "Guest" home folder as the home folder for the new account. Even if I click OK, +*the account still does not appear.*+
Does anyone know what is going on here? The next thing I'll try is an archive and reinstall, but a quicker fix would be nice, since the former involves running all the updates again (we don't have current versions of the Leopard install disks).
I would be very grateful if anyone has an answer.
    -Nik

As it turns out, the Guest folder behavior is actually normal, but I still have not figured out why the guest account still doesn't work. My next step will be to try a disk repair. I've repaired the permissions, but that didn't seem to help as far as I know. I'll also try reinstalling the combo updater to 10.5.6 (as suggested by a co-worker) and see if that does anything. Last resort is the archive and reinstall.

  • Guest Account Setup - ISSUES!

    Hello,
I recently bought a new iMac 20' with leopard pre-installed. I want to set up a guest account for my roommates and guests to use the computer. Each time i try to set up the guest account from system preferences I get the spinning ball (i call it the beach ball of death). Force quitting system preferences causes programs not to load afterwards. When I shut down or reboot, a blue screen just flickers endlessly.
I have tried repairing permissions through disk utility. I have also tried the most recent combo update. Any other ideas? i would love to have a guest account instead of people using my account on my brand spanking new iMac, which i love already.
    Thanks in advance,
    Curt

  • Guest Account log-file location(s)

I have used the "Guest Account" when people come to visit - it's great
HOWEVER, in the interest(s) of saving some disk-space I want to delete the log-files that OS X 10.6.x keeps of the guest-account's useage / web-visiting
    activity and so-on - but I can not FIND these log-files - ???
however, I find the Lego site, the Toys R Us Site, and the banking and the soccer and other such things in the log-files (Parental-Controls / logs) when people leave and I don't really care - so I'd like to DELETE these log-files but I can't find them?
can anyone tell me where to find these log-files (I'm familiar with Terminal and can use it - I came from the Unix-world???
    VikingAsia

I have just 'tested' this thing...
I'm logged-in as 'vikingasia' (which is - basically - an account with root or administrator priveledges
I can go to System Preferences => Accounts => enable the guest account and enable fast-user-switching - and enable Parental Controls - etc. etc. etc. - then close the System Preferences window
check /Users - no 'Guest' there
However, - if I go to 'fast-user-switching' - switch to the Guest Account, open Safari - surf a bit on Apple or Wikipedia or Toshiba - THEN - go BACK to my 'normal' account (via fast-user-switching) - there IS a /Users/Guest - but everything in it (except "Sites") has a small red circle in the lower-right with a white minus-sign in it...
THEN I can go BACK to the Guest Account (via 'fast-user-switching') and close-out the Safari application then "Log-Out" of the "Guest Account" then (when I log-out of the Guest Account) it auto-magically drops me back to a password window - and I put-in the password for the 'normal' account and the '/Users/Guest' is gone (all of it)
BUT - if I now go into "System Preferences => Accounts => Guest => Parental Controls => Web Sites Visited => Logs - I still find the OLD LOGS from 3-6-8

  • Imac Guest account

My iMac keeps asking me to enter a password to log into the Guest account. I never did put a password for this account as it was for visitors coming to my house. I know that by using the guest account they cant access anything except simple computer usage and browsing and also that all data downloaded etc gets deleted as soon as one logs off the guest account. Can someone please tell me why the account is asking for a password now and how can I remove this because at the moment the Guest account is inaccessible.
    Thank you

Try disabling and enabling the Guest account, as it doesn't use a password. Log in your user, open System Preferences > Users & Groups, choose your Guest account in the sidebar and untick its first option. Then, tick it again, open  > Log Out, and log in your Guest account
