Encoding question - 'one pass'

I have 3 DV PAL QuickTime files (16x9).
Video 1 - 31mins - 6.64 GB - (tripod, little motion)
Video 2 - 16 mins - 3.5 GB - (tripod, little motion)
Video 3 - 10 mins - 2.3 GB - (handheld, much motion)
I'm putting them onto a DVD using DVD Studio Pro. I have encoded them in Compressor using 'one pass' with an average bitrate of 8,500,000 bits/sec. They have an IP GOP Structure, closed, size 6, and motion estimation set to 'Best'. I've picked those GOP settings because I believe they offer the best quality.
However, once encoded as MPEG 2, they come out like this...
Video 1 - 31mins - 905 MB - (tripod, little motion) 4,036,846 bits/sec
Video 2 - 16 mins - 731 MB - (tripod, little motion) 6,199,803 bits/sec
Video 3 - 10 mins - 656 MB - (handheld, much motion) 8,413,718 bits/sec
They fit on the DVD just fine, but I am very confused. eg - Video 1 is twice the length of Video 2, yet it is only slightly larger as an MPEG 2. Also, the bitrate is less than half of what I selected.
I was under the impression that with a 'one pass', the number I set the average bitrate to is what Compressor encodes the file at, obviously this isn't the case. It seems to be detecting which clips have more motion than others and adjusting the bitrate accordingly, so that it uses only the maximum bitrate needed, not the maximum bitrate that I selected. Is this correct?
I always thought that 'Two Pass' was just if you wanted file size as low as possible, but still good quality.
I thought that if I just did a 'one pass' and put the quality all the way up then that's the best quality of all. If you're not concerned about file size then there's no point doing a 'two pass'? Hmm.
Help. I'm confused.

Did you base your settings on a Compressor 2 preset? I ask because the presets for Fastest uses One-Pass VBR, and not true One-Pass.
Regardless, in case you did use (true) One-Pass encoding, yes, Compressor 2 does not always adhere to the bit rate specified so long as it's a closed GOP. The only time I've seen Compressor stick to the Bit Rate setting on a one pass is when using an Open GOP setting.
Speaking of Open GOP, when I'm pressed for time, but need to knock out a reasonably good encode, I go Open GOP myself (IBBP structure, size of 15) with bit rate set to 7.5 Mbps and Dolby audio.
Just thought I'd share my One-Pass recipe.

  • Encoding questions

    Hello,
I have some encoding questions, my projects are PAL-AVCHD-Full HD 1080i 25 5.1 channel. I export the videos in Windows Media, here come the questions.
What’s the difference between one and two encoding passes?
What does “Allow interlaced processing” do?
    Thanks,
    Enrique

    Enrique,
Let's look at the 1-pass vs 2-pass Encoding.
When one sets the general parameters for Encoding and chooses 1-pass, the parameters are applied over the entire Timeline. This is the quickest method for Encoding and will be pretty good, based on the chosen parameters.
With 2-pass, the Encoding program will first look at the footage, in the scheme of the chosen parameters, but while doing so, will look for faster motion (both camera and subject) in the Timeline. Where it finds the motion, it will mark it for the highest setting in the parameters. The highest settings will be applied to the sections with the most motion, and the "average" will be applied to the rest. This yields a better Encoded file, especially where there is motion. This Encoding method takes longer, as the Encoder must look at all of the footage first to decide what to do, and then to apply the Encoding parameters.
The Encoders used by Hollywood, are usually at least 9-pass, and often quite a bit more. They are also run by experts, who do nothing but Encode all day, and are highly-paid for their work and their expertise. This is why the high motion footage in a commercial DVD will look smoother, than what we can accomplish, and the file will likely even be smaller. Those Encoding programs cost hundreds of thousands of $, so it's not like we could download one and use it, even if we were experts and could figure out the settings.
So to wrap up, a good Encoding engine will likely do a fair job when set to 1-pass, but especially with higher motion footage, likely a better job with 2-pass, and the only cost is time. Unless I am trying to Encode a quick reference file, I will always use multi-pass schemes, to get the best possible output, and just have a cup, or two, of coffee, while I wait. Also, there are better Encoders, than the ones included in our NLE's and authoring programs. Grass Valley's ProCoder is one that gets really high marks - this side of Hollywood.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • How does one pass import parameters to a report within a method?

    Hello all,
Well how does one  pass import parameters to a report which is within a method ...end method.
    for example :
    method 123
    SUBMIT reportname using selection '1000'
    endmethod .
Here we need to pass values into the selection screen and run the report for those values.
The values are say 'ABC'   (  tablename "DEF" and field name "HIJ" ).
I hope the question is clear, awaiting your response
    Thanks and Regards,
    Sandeep.

    Go to SE24
Parameters: Give the Parameter name, Typing method is "Type" is the domain type that u are selecting, say for e.g :  Parameter is "P_CONT" , its associated type "CHAR32" etc
For Select Options:  Parameter name say "S_CUST", Type"importing". For this you need to give an associated type which must be created as "TABLE TYPE " in SE11. That table type needs to have a "LINE TYPE" .
LINE TYPE is a Structure created with components "SIGN, OPTION, LOW & HIGH" for select-Options.
NOTE: for a Table type related to Customer data fields "say KUNNR", the line type created must have the Component Type and data Type corresponding to the Data Element associated with "KUNNR" ;i.e: "CHAR" etc.
See if this is clear to you or revert back in case of any Confusion.

  • Recording a Multi-Out Instrument as separate files in one pass

    Hello,
I´m sorry if this question has been posted before.
I´m on Logig 9 and I´d like to bounce all tracks from my multi-output instance of Play to separate tracks. In play I have, say, a string section so I want Violins 1 in one file, Violins 2 in one file etc.
I have a multi-out instance of play with each midi channel set to a different output. I´ve created Aux channels with each Play output channel set as input channel respectively. So here comes the actual question:
Do I need to route the Aux channel outputs to Audio tracks in order to be able to record all of them in one pass or does the new "Bounce in place" work on aux tracks as well or do I do something else?
Curiously in my test session now when I create Audio tracks the tracks that appear don´t have record buttons at all, which I don´t understand.
I hope that anyone can clarify. Thanks in advance,
    pessi

    Hi,
    I did what you said:
    1. Exported an active sequence to FCP XML
    2. Parsed it in order to get the information on the segments
    3. I set the in/out points of the sequence in a loop (let's assume I have 2 segments)
    4. Send the adjusted sequence to the render
But there is an issue - all files are got rendered with the timing of the last segment.
The problem is that the segments are sent to MediaEncoder only after the script finishes, which means if I run a loop all my adjustments are overridden by the last setting.
    How to overcome the problem?

  • H1 footage & premiere deinterlace encoder questions.

    Hi all,
I recorded some footage on a H1 in 60i HD (HDV). Used Premiere CS3 preset HDV 1080i 30 (60i) to capture it.
    Capture question...
    1. Should i buy cineform aspect or prospect HD to convert it before editing in premiere CS3?
    Adobe media encoder questions...
    2. Should i deinterlace the footage first by selecting "Deinterlace" in the from the output tab?
I was reading some adobe livedocs info that its a good idea to do so, even though canon says their 60i, 30f, 24f is as good as progressive.
    3. should i choose "HDTV 1080i 29.97 High Quality" or "1440 x1080i 29.97 High Quality"?
The H1 captured output from tape is 1440x1080i. The encoder HDTV preset outputs 1920x1080, the other preset obviously outputs 1440x1080.

    1. I use Cineform with great results and would indeed convert it to cineform BEFORE editing. It converts the 4:2:0 colorspace to 4:2:2 and is better to edit with, along with the fact it also coverts long GOP to almost a frame based compressin.
    2. Cineforms method of "deinterlaceing" is different than Adobe's.
I have tried both. It seems that Cineforms is better. There is a LONG post under HDV to SD conversion. Read it.
But, it seems to me that if you keep it interlaced, motion seems smoother and more natural.
Adam Wilt did a good review of the HL and stated that the "F" frames are really progressive frames made from interlaced CCD's. The frames do lose a little vertical resolution.
I would either shoot in F and keep it there, or shoot in I and keep it there.

  • IDVD '08 encoding in one second and then quit unexpectedly. not burning DVD

I tried burning a .mov file to a blank DVD-R using One Step DVD From Movie. I selected the file to import and burn. Then iDVD prepared the DVD. Then, instead of taking a few minutes to encode like usual, it showed that it was encoded in one second and then iDVD quit unexpectedly and the usual error message popped up when that happens with any program. I tried it a few more times and the same thing happened. I tried updating the software, but the software was the newest version. I then tried exporting the .mov file again from my video editing software (AVID) and tried to burn that file and it still didn't work. I the copied the the .mov file to a flash drive and put it on a different computer, on which I was able to burn the .mov file perfectly fine.
This has never happened before. I have been able to burn many files of all kinds onto a DVD using iDVD on my computer without any problems at all up until now.
    Help?

  • SHAREPOINT QUESTION: One way SYNC of files from SharePoint cloud to hard-drive

SHAREPOINT QUESTION: One way SYNC of files from SharePoint cloud to hard-drive
How does a person enable Sales reps to SYNC literature files from a cloud library down to their computer,.... but then not be able to have them accidentally delete the files by accident if they delete a file from their computer and then have it
    sync upwards again.
    Permission Level
"Read" allows to download individual files but not SYNC down and there are too many files for them to go and download each file every-time.
"View Only" is only visible on the browser and not useful when reps are in remote parts of the world.
"Contribute" allows the sales reps to SYNC but if they delete a file from their computer, then it deletes it for all which is to much.
There must surely be a way to allow a one way (cloud-to-hard-drive) SYNC to avoid folks from deleting files.
Does anybody know how to d this or if not, how do I have Microsoft consider such a perceived weakness compare to dropbox

You can achieve the functionality which you describe using the OneDrive (SkyDrive Pro) in Sharepoint 2013. You can setup read only folders to sync to achieve "one way" traffic. You will need Office 2013 locally to avail the full features of
the coauthoring environment if you are looking into that as well.

Some benefits of using OneDrive include the following:
Users can take their documents offline with them and have them synchronize when they are online again.
Users' documents can be synchronized across all client devices and servers where the files are stored and synchronized.
Multiple users (online or offline) can work on documents at the same time, and the OneDrive for Business Windows Sync client will synchronize the changes between the users. If there are conflicts, users are prompted to resolve the conflicts.
Users can share and collaborate on documents.
Users can work from many locations, either online or offline, and work from many devices.

  • Constant Bit Rate or One Pass VBR?

I'm about to burn a 90 minute DVD and I don't know if I should use CBR or One Pass. The footage is old and has lots of noise. My bit rate equation (560/x) comes out to about 6.2. If I use One Pass VBR can I go higher on the max than 6.2? I know I'll need a little room for audio. I'm going to use an
A/C at 192. What do you think?
    John

The footage is old and has lots of noise.
Then it might need a higher bitrate. . . Even though the noise is ugly, at a low bitrate it would get even uglier.
Noise has a lot of info , it's like (for lack of a better example) a shot of a tree with lots of leaves blowing around. Lots of information which needs a higher bitrate to do it justice.
Just like David pointed out, do a test & see what is needed for your footage.

  • Highest quality Blu-ray disc encoding question ...

I did a bit of searching on old posts, but still wasn't clear on the answer.  My source footage is 1280x720, 59.94p and came from a Contour+ helmet camera where the files are stored in a .mov file with H.264 encoding.   My video is only 9 minutes long.   What is the best method to produce the highest quality single layer BD out of PP and Encore in this case?
One response I can envision is that isn't going to matter in this case given the camera/source.  Otherwise, would one be better off using Adobe Dynamic Link and letting Encore choose the settings or selecting the format/preset and tweaking the video settings in PP and importing the resultant files into Encore?
If PP, I have seen some posts saying MPEG2 Blu-ray will produce a better result if the bit rate is cranked up high.  But then others imply H.264 will likely come out better.   I also noticed that the H.264 video settings allow increasing the bit rate there as well.
I will have a question on video settings depending on the answer above.
    Thanks!

Thanks Ann.  Everyone else confer or do we have any MPEG2 advocates?   Assuming H.264, what video settings would you change from the default beyond the frame dimensions and frame rate?  I'm a layman/consumer, but at a glance I thought perhaps "VBR, 2-pass" would have merit as I thought I read somehwere that produces a better result (encoding time doesn't matter for me).    What about increasing the Target and Maximum Bitrate sliders all the way to the right (my video is short)?  What about the Render at Maximum Quality check box (I'm still confused on that one and when to use it)?

  • H.264 Encoding Questions...???

I am now starting to convert different video files to my iTunes for my AppleTV and have some questions...
BTW, I am using VisualHub and using H.264 - high quality setting for encoding on a G5 iMac with 1GB RAM.
    1. Approx. how long should it take to encode a 700MB .avi file to .mp4, using H.264?
I am transferring all these TV shows I have that are around 700MB .avi files and they are taking anywhere from 400-600 minutes per file!!! That seems very long to me.
    2. Do .VOB files typically take even longer to encode using H.264?
The few .VOB files I have tried are taking 800 or so minutes for a 2-3GB .vob file.
Is there something else I should be doing? Are these times normal?
Any tips or suggestions for encoding?
    Thanks in advance.

Don't use VisualHub myself, but do know that h.264 encoding is extremely processor intensive and time consuming. The actual source material probably won't matter too much unless it's high definition or uses a particularly computationally intensive algorithm to decode (and for most decoding is miles faster than encoding).
For example, on my iMac (2.16GHz Intel core 2 duo) converting a 2-3GB '.rec' TV recording from a Topfield PVR (which in essence produces MPEG2 transport streams), via MPEG Streamclip can take 3-4 hours for say a 90-120 minute program, and that's without using 2 pass encoding.
VisualHub is regarded as one of the faster converters, but High Quality setting will take longer than 'Standard' and the 'Go nuts' option will take even longer.
Hopefully (though it may not be what you want to hear) someone with a G5 and VisualHub will reply to confirm the sort of encoding times you're experiencing - I say hopefully as if their times are much faster it points to some other factor than VisualHub.
Elgato make a hardware USB h.264 encoder which is supposed to speed up encoding considerably but it only accelerates specific applicatiosn (eg iMovie) or their own conversion application (so far - the latest MPEG Streamclip release suggests they will add an option to harness it if possible/feasible - it may not be).
There are mixed reports on the Elgato device - biggest gripes being lack of customisable settings and an 800x600 resolution maximum. I've got one on order - for some older stuff recorded off a PVR it'll probably be more than adequate but for newer things software encoding is likely to be better. Time vs quality trade off really.
Best h.264 encoding results for most at the present time will almost certainly be achieved in customisable converter software - there are probably professional high quality h264 hardware converters available but these would be prohibitively costly for most of us.

  • Cs4 media encoder question

Hello all....I have been holding off upgrading to CS4 production premium from my CS3 suite....mainly as I really am not sure what the benefits would be for my particular workflow.....but one question I need answered is this....I currently use Procoder 3 for all of my encoding needs and am extremely pleased with the results....would upgrading to CS4 make Procoder redundant? or can I bypass the AME (which sounds extremely buggy)any feedback is much appreciated
    cheers
    steve

    Steve,
I have similar concerns about switching over to PP CS4--though I find many of its features enticing.
Obviously, any workaround will cost time and workflow effectiveness. I certainly do not care for the stranglehold they have given AME. That was not a smart design move IMO, and certainly not a smart marketing decision, especially given the level of complaints about AME's slowness and quality issues with some formats. It IS a separate application--so where is the necessity in making it required for PP export.
I presume one could edit/render in a given standard format, run a batch through AME while doing other work in PP, and then batch the the lot through procoder 3 to final format while continuing editing. I may give that a try with the trial version just to judge what the workflow costs are. It would take a lot for me to give up procoder, unless I was convinced that the control and quality levels were the same or better in AME.

  • Encoding question for iPhone

For some time now, we have exported our sermons for the iPod, and they work fine on iPods. But when we try to encode at a larger size for the iPhone or iPhone Touch, it doesn't work.
Export from FCE using MPEG-4, File format MP4 (not ISMA), Video Format H.264, Data Rate 60, Image Size 320 x 180 (we use 16:9), Frame Rate 15, Key Frame Automatic, Restrict Profile to Baseline, Encoding Best Quality (two pass).
Audio AAC-LC (Music), Data Rate 48, Mono, 44.100 kHz, Encoding Quality Best.
    This plays on the iPod.
But doing the same thing with a data rate of 200, image size of 480 x 270, fps 29.97 the sound plays but the video does not play on the iPhone.
We don't want to use the default iPhone setting, because that gives us no control over the aspect ratio or the data rate.
    Suggestions?

OK, now a slightly different question.
I thought that the iPhone was supposed to play .mov files, but when we compress the video using QT Conversion as a .mov file, the iPhone says this format is not supported. Here's what we're doing:
Export from FCE using QuickTime conversion:
Video settings: H.264, 29.97 fps, Key Frames Automatic, Restrict to 204 kbps, optimized for download, Frame reordering checked, Encoding Best Quality, size 484 x 272.
Sound settings: AAC, Mono, 44.100 kHz, Render Quality Best, VBR Constrained, 48-54, kbps.
Prepare for Internet Streaming checked, Fast Start, Compressed Header.
    Thanks!
