Encore on 64-bit

I'm about to upgrade to a brand-spanking new video-editing-dedicated PC, and I'm seriously considering 64-bit. Does anyone know of any problems running Encore 2 on 64-bit? Or can you advise which, if either, platform is best? Thanks.

> I understand the best video chips are the Opterons, blowing away the P4s and the Xenons.
Depends on what you read & who wrote it.
Apple claimed their Dual G5 was the "Fastest Personal Computer in the world" in a national TV campaign over here - it was pure BS and had to be withdrawn.
AMD set these "tests" up, and probably weighted them to favour their CPU.
There is more to it than a CPU - lots more.
I will
i never
give up my Intels and go to AMD. Not a hope. I'll switch to Apple first - and that ain't gonna happen either.
All comparisons right now are pretty meaningless.
Limited 64 bit hardware - most of it is ported, and most of that only "seems" better as the 32 bit "legacy" mode in x64 Windows is actually slower than current 32 bit OS.
You need true 64 bit software, on a true 64 bit OS, running true 64 bit hardware.
And there is no such thing right now. Any application that uses any 32 bit plugins will perform slower in a 64 bit OS in legacy mode.
So.
How are these tests being done? Not on a true 64 bit OS, with all the right bits they ain't.
As for the whole 64 bit thing, it will only work when the entire path is in 64 bits - and even then the "benefits" are dubious, especially with Audio - and most likely with video too.
To quote a leading Audio designer & manufacturer:
>Win64 supports two application modes: 32-bit (for compatability), and 64-bit. If an app is compiled to run in 64-bit mode, it can't load 32-bit plugins or add-ons. Also, since there's no x87 FPU in 64-bit mode, all the floating point code must be reworked to run on the vector units. So for example, if a plugin has optimized assembly code (like most good native plugs), these have to be completely rewritten to work in 64-bit mode on the new floating point hardware! Some plugins may already have been written to use the vector units (like some synths and impulse 'verbs), so these would port more easily assuming the vector code is the only low-level assembly code.
As appealing as 64-bit mode is, the sonic benefits simply aren't there. In fact, the internal precision of the vector units is lower than the x87 FPU! The vector units can process 32- and 64-bit floats, but their internal resolution is fixed at the same precision. The x87 FPU on the other hand, always retains 80- or 160-bit internal prescion, and only drops the precision when results are saved to memory. Also, when 64-bit precision is used in the vector unit, performance is cut in half, so intensive 64-bit float code will be slower than 32-bit code.
The bottom line is that because of the availability of this more efficient, but lower resolution 32-bit float mode in Win64, some plugin vendors may opt to drop precision when supporting 64-bit application mode, and sound quality will be lower than what's currently available in the current 32-bit mode.
More can sometimes be less!
Be careful - don't swallow the BS from manufacturers that want to reinvent the wheel.

Which is more stable for Encore: XP 64 bit, or Vista 64 bit?
Any thoughts on this, most appreciated!
    Thanks,

If Encore CS4's transcoder can run on more than one thread (and if you of course have a multicore system), then I'd say yes. Otherwise, probably no advantage.
I don't use Vista 64, so I don't know whether there are any disadvantages.

  • Encore CS4 & 24 bit audio for Bluray?

    Hey all,
Working on authoring my first bluray of a concert we shot in HD and recorded the audio in 24 bit / 48khz. I can't seem to find an option in the Encore settings that address the 24 bit output option. It seems that you can switch between Dolby Digital or PCM. PCM defaults to 16bit... and Dolby only allows up to 448kbps.
Is is possible to create a bluray out of encore with 24bit audio?
    Thank you,
    Harry

    Harry,
I cannot address your question directly, but there are several posts to this forum on 24-bit Audio. Neil Wilkes has addressed those. I'd do a search of this forum for "24-bit audio," and then filter on People, choosing Neil Wilkes.
    Good luck,

  • Imported .m2v bit rates in Encore 2.0

    Hello,
I've noticed that whenever I import an .m2v into Encore, the bit rate reported in Encore is 2Mbps lower than that reported by other programs (e.g. AVICodec).  For example, I'm trying to make a DVD from an .m2v created to have a bit rate of 7.7Mbps in Apple's Final Cut Pro/Compressor, but imported into Encore as an asset, its bit rate is listed as 5.7 Mbps.  I need this DVD to be of the highest quality possible, so I figure that by creating an .m2v with an outside bit rate of 10Mbps, it will come into Encore with a bit rate of 8Mbps.  Is this the right way to approach this problem?
In the past, I've run into the same issue with importing .m2v's into Encore and have opted to import .avi's instead and let Encore do its own transcoding.  (Importing .m2v's into Encore sometimes creates weird blips in the video too.)  The problem is that this time I want to create a DVD from an uncompressed HD Quicktime.  (Since I'm a PC guy, a friend with an Apple computer is doing me a favor by converting the uncompressed HD Quicktime into .m2v for me.)
Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

    >Even if things have been changed on my system why should Encore do all the transcoding, write the files to disk and then hang on this issue? Even after a fresh re-install with all registries cleared etc?
An uninstall/Reinstall will almost certainly *not* clear out the registry, or even all the common files installed. Otherwise, you would be able to install a trial version, then uninstall it, and re-install again for another 30 days. This obviously doesn't work - so uninstalling is not removing all the relevant files.
Another common problem is that badly written 3rd party apps often reset the merit order of DirectShow related codecs, and this can mean that even when you think you're using one codec, the system (not Encore, but the OS) will use another one altogether. This can mean that what you
    i think
is one type of AVI file is actually a different one, with perhaps an older version of a codec used to create the AVI being used because a codec pack installed/overwrote the good one.
I have had this happen to me - and it is a pig of a problem.
I could be completely wrong though.

  • Encore cs 5.1 blu ray chapter not working.....

I've a tone of problems with this version.  Encore showing error codes 14, 25.....Some of the chapters working fine but others not. I've tried several ways to solve the issues but no hope. It seems you need full knowledge of blu ray theories to burn a blu ray!!!!

    HDV&S wrote:
I'm using windows 7 on laptop with i7 processor and nvidia GTS 360M display, External 1 TB HDD through SATA cable.
Original shot was on HDV 60i with multiple Sony cameras and did the multicam edit. Converted to H264 with PCM audio with premiere CS 5.5, used VBR 2 pass everthing else left as defaut settings. Rendering took almost 21 hrs to generate  2:18 hr. video .m4v and .wav files (file size 17.7 gb).
When I bring these videos as timeline(took ~20min to load files.) into the Encore with all the menus(created in photoshop with buttons and res. 1440 X 1080 to match with other assets ), some of the chapters not working on the preview window and Encore transcoded the whole files took another ~10 hrs!
Is there any better and faster workflow to complete the project ?
note: I used the cineform avi for multicam editing in premiere pro with the same settings (HDV 29.97).
Okay, we are starting to make progress, but why are you shooting in HDV? That is a lossy system using non-sqyuare pixels so the whole thing is effectively getting converted. No wonder it took 21 hours and it looks to me as if you exported to the wrong settings - .m4v is regular .264, not BluRay. See Stan's suggestion.
We still need to see the exact error messages - it looks likely you are out of HDD space. Remember that Premiere & Encore use 32-bit float audio temp files, and the media cache databases will be enormous.....how much HDD free is remaining?

  • Why Dynamic Link to Encore when CUDA doesn't help Encore?

Ok, so I just finished cutting together a 90 minute video and used Dynamic Link to bring it to Encore. My source files were AVCHD and HDV mixed, so Encore had to transcode them. I attempted to do a transcode before burning, and got all the way to 99% in the transcode when I got an error message saying that I couldn't transcode the file because it was open in another program (I had closed PPro, but apparently it was still open?). Anyway, I tried hitting "build" and got the same error, again at 99%. So I went back to PPro and used it to export an mpeg2-dvd file which I then imported into Encore and burned to DVD.
Now, though I would appreciate some suggestions as to the source of my error when transcoding with Dynamic Link, that's not the root of my post... here it is: I'm not likely to use Dynamic Link again when Encore's (failed) transcode took nearly two hours for my 90 minute video, while doing a direct export from Premiere took only 40 minutes. I can only assume that the difference in time is because PPro is a) 64 bit, and b) can take advantage of the CUDA (I did all my CC and transitions using CUDA effects). Until Encore hits 64 bit and can take advantage of CUDA, I doubt I'll be using Dynamic Link again... anyone have any insight or comments?

I'm not sure that the information is correct.  Test project with dynamic link from PR to EN.  I right-clicked and picked transcode now.  Using windows task manager processes, the only programs using cpu are encore (60-80%) and premiere (10-20%). I happened to have AME open, but it was using zero.
I do not have a CUDA card, but I don't think it matters for this test.
I thought we had been told (probably in CS3 or CS4) that Encore was using ame, but this doesn't look like it.  What engine is actually doing the EN transcoding?  It certainly appeared to be running internally to Encore.  Is there any difference in how Encore is transcoding between using "transcode now" versus transcoding through "build"?

  • Problems playing DVD's burned with Encore 2.0...

About 4 months ago, I burned a 4-DVD set for a client of mine... I authored them all in Encore 2.0 and everyone was happy with it (or so I thought)... But today I got a call from them and they said that their end-users are having trouble playing them in set-top boxes and that they either don't play and/or kick out at the 20-minute mark.
I have watched these all the way through on both my computer AND my set-top box (although my DVD is pretty new and plays everything - including .divx files on a CD-R, etc...) I asked him to look into it, get more details and get back to me. However in the meantime I would like to somehow verify that these are indeed error-free dvd's. By the way, they started duping on DVD+R and switched to DVD-R at some point (even though I told them DVD-R for highest compatibility to begin with), but they are having problems with both...
    My main question is this:
Is there a program available that will run a test on a DVD's file structure, etc and verify it's a good clean "compatible" DVD?
I do realize that older player especially will not play some "burned " DVD's, etc... But I want to verify the problem is not on my end. I do not see a way that Encore would make a non-compliant disc... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So, AC3 is compatible with older players and even smaller. Great, I did not realize that. If I have to re-author I will certainly do that.
Luckily I still have the finished AVI files and the Encore project files. But I most likely erased the whole DVD project folder. Is there any way to re-call the DVD project with only the .ncor file? I know I have tried in the past and have not been able to. I would like these new DVD's to have the same exact look as the previously authored ones...
Now that I think about it, I never set anything. I exported to AVI's and let Encore maximize the bit rates to fit it all on a 4.7 gig DVD-R. (i authored 9 hours of footage to 4 DVD's with - one was over 2 hours long - this was against my recommendation by the way...) I haven't used Encore since September so am a little rusty. Where do I set the guidelines for the auto maximize option? (i.e. I still want to maximize the DVD but using .AC3 for audio and limit maximum bitrate to 7000 kbps...)
    Thanks!

  • IOS6 unable to toggle flashlight on/off while recording videos

Ever since upgrading to iOS 6 from 5 on my iPhone 4S I am unable to toggle flash/on or off while I am recording videos. In previous iOS versions I was able to record and toggle the flash to on or off as I see fit without having to stop the recording.
is there something I am missing here?

I do not hold out much hope for the popup solution.
Popups are a problem because they have no background, and that is the only place you can put graphics that are not subject to the highlight limitations.
But Blu-ray highlights are higher bit depth. Make sure you select rich color in menu properties. I do NOT know if this applies to popups, but I think it should.

"Encore supports 8-bit color in subpictures for Blu-ray disc menus. You can export 256-color menu subpictures for Blu-ray. In addition, you can export full original colors for menu button highlights in Flash.
To export subpictures in full original colors, select Export Highlights in Rich Color in the Menu Properties pane. Encore displays menu highlights with full colors in Menu Editor.
However, Encore only displays two-bit DVD colors in the Preview panel. If you do not enable this feature, Encore exports menu highlights in two-bit colors for Blu-ray and Flash."
What is our client really trying to do? If it is a promo piece, you would normally have the logo etc in all the time, or at particular points that are determined strategically. • BluRay: Toggle logo on/off while video plays

    Hello,
Short Description of my situation: our company currently produces an image-video for a big energy-provider. the client asked me, if he could have one plain version of the video and one with the title of the film in the lower right corner and the companys logo in the upper left corner.
Now i thought with BluRay and PopUp menus and all there has to be a way, that the client can toggle the logo and the title on and off, while the video is playing… I had three ideas how to approach this:
Treat the logo as a subtitle file
I learned, that it is possible to import a simple graphic as a subtitle script, i tried this for hours yesterday and actually succeeded, but the image quality was so unbearably bad, that i had to discard that approach.
Afterwards i read in two different forums that it is simply not possible to achieve a better result at the time, but if anyone has an idea, how that could work good for me i would be very grateful. the logo is only one color, but it would have to be sharp.
Import four different videos: a plain one , one with the logo, one with the title and one with both. this could work, because the video is only about ten minutes long. The problem is, that i don't want the video to start from the beginning, every time the client wants to add the logo for instance, but keep on playing seamlessly( or NEARLY seamlessly) Do you know, if that is possible in Encore CS6??
Somehow treat the logo and the title as a PopUP menu. I could imagine that to work for me, though i think its not the perfect solution, since i don't know if the client can use the chapter buttons while in a PopUp menu, if the menu would disappear unwanted at some point or if it would be possible for the client to chose one version of the video from the start menu and so on.
I am not that advanced with Encore yet, especially not with PopUp menus, since there is no proper way to preview them in Encore. I am currently searching for a mac software that can emulate PopUp menus. Dear mister Stan Jones already told me about Arcsofts TotalMedia Theater, but i can't seem to get the trial version to work via crossover and i have no windows machine available...
Do you guys think, that Pop Up menus could work for me in this case??
I know that this effect is not necessary, but i think it would be a nice thing, also for future projects...
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
    Have a nice day,
    Nigi

  • Transcoding for ages (days...)

    Hello,
Is it normal for Adobe Encore to need about 4 days in order to trancode and make a blu-ray disk?
Even if I want to author a DVD with a one hour film, without effects, Encore needs more than three days.
Now I am trying to author a simple 1 hour DVD (3,31GB) and so far I have my computer running for  2 days and 16 hours. The progress bar is almost moveless.
I have a Intel i7 4 core PC, and I have 12GB or RAM memory. I have Quadro FX4800 for a graphic card. This is a pretty powerfull PC.
    Do you have any suggestions?

    I know what is wrong.
I am sending the PREMIERE PRO CS5 Sequence to ADOBE ENCORE CS5 (64-bit both), through Adobe Dynamic Link. This is the best and quickest way.
I have a lot of Denoiser effects, which takes very long to render. When I disabled the Denoiser effect, I transcoded the project even faster than real time.
Now, if I export the clip into an uncompressed avi or quicktime clip, then I believe I will not have this delay, since the clip is already rendered.
I use AVCHD files taken from a Sony Full HD camcorder, and I always decompress my clips. I work with completely uncompressed clips, because otherwise, I get several artifacts (non noticable when played back) but if I want to make a DVD or BLU-RAY, then I get more artifacts because of the second compression. So I need to apply the denoiser effect which takes about 1,5 seconds to render just one frame...

  • How Can I Make Encore Create a Bluray Image that uses a Bit Rate that Really Fills The Disc?

I have searched and browsed but have not seen this specific issue.
I realize that if you leave the bit rate alone, Encore will use the best bitrate. In my experience, it doesnt. I have also found that the Disc Info on the Build tab is never correct. The final transcoded size of the ISO is always very different from what is shown.
With the current disc I am making, I am encoding 4 HD m2t video files that total 20 GB on disk. The total running time is about 1hr 50m. Leaving everything set to defaults, the final size of the ISO file is 12 GB. I would like the final size to be around 20GB. I would expect that Encore would do this automatically. Changing bitrate in the project settings and re-transcoding does not change the final size. If I manually set the encoding, the size does change but since the Disc Info is unusable, it is excruciating trial and error. You have to pick settings that you think will work, wait hours for it to transcode, then it is way to big or way to small. I cant figure out how to get it to my target size.
Also, when I transcode the files, Encore never lists the bit rates of the transcoded files. The field is always blank.
It may also be note worthy that I have to first transcode the files, then build the disc. If I dont do that, the transcoding will hang. Even when I do separate the steps, sometimes when I build the disc from the transcoded files, the build of the disc still hangs.
I am running a 3 GHz Quad CPU with 4 GB of Ram in 32 bit XP Pro. I have 5 physical drives of 500 GB each. I also use separate physical drives for the source files vs the target ISO. Disk space is not an issue.
Also, is there any timeframe for when Adobe is going to release a new update? I have also run into other problems on this forum like the wonderful error 6 and the hanging transcoding, although my solutions to both problems were different than what was posted. It is all hit or miss.
Does anyone know if Adobe going to add a feature like on other disc authoring programs where you click a Fit to disc button and it then calculates the best bit rate for the specified disc size? That would make me very happy.
I would appreciate any help here.

Encore does have a fit-to-disc feature, called "automatic transcoding", which chooses the bit rate based upon how much media there is to encode, how much room is currently on the disc, and applying format-legal restrictions (minimum and maximum bit rates allowable by the format).
So for instance, 30 minutes of video will never fill a disc because the required bit rate to do so would be higher than allowable by the format.

  • Why is Encore 5.1 AUTO mode building files just a bit too large for DVDs?

I've been doing the same videos for a few years using Encore 1.5 and more recently Encore 5.1 (with Premiere 5.5).  The videos are typically football games with short 2-25 secs of motion menus.  If I put two games per DVD, the total running time has been up to 2 hours total per game.  I've made dozens of these with Premier writing AVI files (standard 720x480 vide) and writing in Encore 1.5 using auto settings.  With Premiere CS4 I started using the dynamic link to Encore CS4 and still ran beautiful DVDs on auto transcoding.
Now, when using the same standard video files in Premiers 5.5, and using dynamic link to Encore 5.1, on auto transcode settings, the image files or transcode files (depending on how I order the build) keep coming out 150 - 300 MBs too large for the DVDs (typically Tayo-Yuden or Verbatim burning to Plextor/Pioneer drives). (Windows-7-X64 Intel D975XBX2 MB.)
To see if I was going nuts, I recently saved a job as two AVI files (same length as the sequences sent through dynamic link to Encore CS5.1) and did the same DVD setup in Encore CS4 but importing the AVI files as timelines.  The chapter points didn't convert for Encore CS4 so I had to install manually. The end result, though, was a DVD image that worked fine.
So I then went to the Encore CS5 build window and set the DVD size to manual, dropping down from 4.7GBs to 4.25.  The result fit, but then left too much free space (though the vids still looked OK).
I know by other discussions that others are having issues with Encore CS5.1 - or maybe it is related to Premiere 5.5 sequences.  Recently burned a set with 22 secs motion menu and 1.4 hours of video and had no problems on auto.  This leads me to believe either that Encore is underestimating the transcode sizes or there is a problem with writing DVDs at or near two hours in length.
    Anybody have answers, suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Doug A

    Thanks, Giorgio.
I do you imgburn quite a bit and even the new version 2.5.6.0 which allows for truncating and overburning wouldn't write to either the Plextor burners or the Pioneer 205 (Blu-Ray in DVD mode).
I just ran another image build setting the disc size (for the burn) at 4.5GBs rather than the automatic 4.7GBs.  This helped and gave me a final image size of 4.33GBs - still not large enough to maximize the disc and the compressed code for better quality, but in this case, a tradeoff for just getting the job done.
I hope Adobe updates a fix for this problem, if indeed, it turns out to be a bug.  Also, while I'm on the the bandwagon, the motion previews in Encore 5.1 do seem to preview in very low res.  I'll need to check to see if there is a setting for this, but I've not experienced it before 5.1.
    Regards,
    Doug A

  • Encore 64 bit? -- install in Program Files (x86)?

When I had trouble installing the update from Premiere Pro CS3 to Premiere Pro CS5, Adobe Tech support had me install Encore under C:\Program Files (x86) instead of C:\Program Files.  I'm running Windows 7, 64 bit.  Can someone confirm Encore is still a 32 bit program?
    Thanks.

    John T Smith wrote:
Yes, Encore is 32bit... because the disc writing core of the program is licensed from Roxio, and Roxio has not upgraded to 64bit
    Er, not Roxio.
It's a Sonic authorcore - and the confusion comes from the fact that Sonic have bought Roxio, and rebadged some of their products (the consumer grade ones) with Roxio badges - and in turn, Sonic are now owned by Rovi (http://www.rovicorp.com/)
Encore was originally a SOnic app called "DVD Producer" that was discontinued a while back now (probably because it was sold to Adobe)
Sonic have no 64 bit authoring at all.
Even Scenarist SD is still 32-bit, and it is unsupported on Windows 7 64-bit versions.
Scenarist BD, however, is fully 64-bit and Scenarist BD will also author SD discs.

  • Encore CS5 fails install on 32-bit

Re-installed the Master Collection last night. Never installed Encore originally but decided to give it a go.
It failed saying "Requires parent UI payload Adobe Photoshop CS5_X64".
Which really confuses me because I'm installing on a 32-bit machine. I had all apps checked in the installer (minus After Effects and Premiere Pro).
Any thoughts on what caused this error?
All other applications installed successfully (and work and were subsequently reactivated successfully).

No idea. This error has not been reported here.
The only related errors I see (for other products) suggest there may be other errors in this installation.
In any event, contact Adobe for installation problems.
    You installed Premiere CS4 successfully?
