Enter and shift keys not working. HELP!!!

A few days ago my mouse started behaving erratically all of a sudden. It would move by itself, click apps, and switch tabs rapidly all on its own. I've had this computer for over 2 years and this has never happened before. Restarting and rebooting into safe mode didn't work, but one user suggested a PRAM reset and that fixed the mouse problem. However, my enter and shift key on the right side do not work now (this is much less annoying than the mouse problem, but still very inconvenient!). Restarting the computer and doing another PRAM reset doesn't work unfortunately. I also used the keyboard viewer to confirm that all but those two keys work. I don't think the issue is with keyboard lint because both keys worked fine before I tried the reset. Booting up in safe mode also doesn't fix the problem. It would be great if I could find a way to fix this here since I won't be able to go to an Apple genius bar until December!

Hello sandi3s,
The troubleshooting detailed below may help restore functionality to your MacBook Pro's keyboard.
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane in System Preferences, then click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond

  • RETURN/ENTER and SHIFT keys no longer work, and my number keys only work as numbers - no longer do they serve as exclamation points or dollar signs etc.

After downloading OS X Yosemite my RETURN/ENTER and SHIFT keys no longer work, and my number keys only work as numbers - no longer do they serve as exclamation points or dollar signs etc. PLEASE HELP

Does this bad behavior persist when logging in as a different user, e.g., Guest?  Does it persist when starting up in Safe Mode?

  • Return & shift keys not working

My keyboard is unresponsive.  problms started w/ "L" and "9" and "Enter/Return" keys.  Did a s/w update and reboot but still no success.  Now only "Shift" and "Enter/Return" keys are unresponsive.

I tried the troubleshooting steps listed in the article linked above but ran into the following problems:
    a) the View menu doesn't have a "Speech" item listed (I'm running 10.9.2)
    b) My MacBook Air doesn't have a disk drive; impossible to start up from an Install disk as recommended in step 10.
None of the other steps helped (sticky keys off, slow keys off, mouse keys off, etc)
Looking at the forums, looks like several other people have the issue of just the right-side shift and return keys not working, like me. Could we please have some advice that is specific to that particular issue?
In the meantime I'm using only the left-side shift and have downloaded and installed KeyRemap4MacBook and remapped my backslash key so it issues the "return" command. A clunky work around but it seems to do the trick, at least.

  • Shift Key not working!

I spilled hot chocolate on my macbook pro, so I shut it down immediately, dried it off as much as possible. 36 hours later, I turn it on and try typing in my password, it wont accept it because it thinks I have shift held down. I checked, and I'm sure it isnt just stuck down. What can i do?

This is more than 'Shift key not working.' You have a serious problem. Follow this:
    Spill Cleaning
And, don't think that just because it was two teaspoons and not a glassful that there is a difference.
Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
    Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
    Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).
Do not put in a bag of rice in as much as rice will get into the ports and optical drive and do further damage.

  • My return and shift key stopping working

Now, most of the time it wont do anything but if you push it several times it will type a 0p or /- or control volume the instead. I checked the keyboard setting and voicecontrol and reset it to default and updated software for system but no resolve. How do I fix this?

  • Help! Left shift key not working!

all of a sudden today my left shift key has ceased to work. the right key works fine, increasing the chance that it's hardware. I'd like to remove the key cap and see if re-seating it might fix it. I've looked in many places on how to remove it, but no luck. Is there a web site that shows how it's done for a G4 Aluminum? Thanks in advance.

    Marco,
I've been having intermittent left shift key problems for several months. My laptop is now 3 days out of Warranty, Apple web site says so. Anyway, the only reliable fix I've found is to do a re-boot. I can also (sometimes) get reliable shifting if I slide my finger closer to the outer edge - meaning, no shift if pressed on one side of the key, sometimes shift on the other side.
I've also had success shifting in one application which seemed to "clear" the problem in the original application. Example: typing in Mail when left shift key stops working. Switch to MS Word, shift works fine. Switch back to Mail, shift works fine.
I have a feeling it's a combination of software and slowly failing hardware. I feel bad to have waited until after the warranty period, and now the problem is getting worse. My wife was just in for brain surgery, so you can't really blame me! She's doing fine.
So, my suggestion is to try rebooting to see if that clears a memory buffer problem. Kinda annoying, maybe a future software update will fix the software problem?

  • 3 letters + left shift key not working - 2 of them + right shift key working

    Hi all,
as in subject, I have just bought a laptop g50-45, italian keyboard.
    I encountered this problem:
"LEFT shift key" + "e" or "d" or "c" combinations do not work. Nothing happens.
"RIGHT shift key" + "e" or "d" work properly
"RIGHT shift key" + "c" do not work. Nothing happens
CAPS key + "e" or "d" or "c" work properly.
I noticed this issue before making any updates of  windows 8.1
I tried making an update of the bios and later updating windows but the problem is still there.
I check with an external keyboard and everything work correctly
I don't think it could be a mechanical problem because "e", "d" and "c" keys alone work properly, so it seems more a software side problem.
    Thank you for your help.

  • "backspace," "g" and "h" key not working

    Hello,
Suddenly the "backspace," "g" and "h" keys stopped working. Due to this issue, I can't log in to use my computer.
    Please, help.
I have a Pavilion g7-1260 us Notebook PC, Windows 7.
Please help becasue I can't use my laptop at all.
    Thanks,
    Carlos-Manuel

    Hi Carlos,
Well, to get logged in (assuming your PC is at least booting up to the Windows Logon screen), you can try to use the On-Screen Keyboard, just click on the Ease of Access button (should be on the lower left hand side of the logon screen) and put a check mark in the box next to "Type without the keyboard" and select OK.  This should bring up the On-Screen Keyboard and allow you to enter your user name and password.  Note that I'm assuming here that you couldn't get logged on because either your user name or password or both uses one of the keys that isn't working.
Alternatively you can also just connect an external USB keyboard, like what you might use with a Desktop PC.
That should at least allow you to use your computer somewhat.
To test your keyboard, reboot the computer and press F2 to access the UEFI diagnostics.  You can find the full procudure in this document:
Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 7, Vista)
If you don't have the lastest UEFI diagnostics installed on your PC, you can get the download here for your model PC:
HP Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Support Environment
There is a keyboard test under system tests, it may take a while to get through the test procedure, but it will verify if the keyboard hardware is functional or not.
If the keyboard test all pass, but you still have problems with some keys on the keyboard, check that the keyboard language has not been changed.  Go to Start --> Control Panel, choose "Change Keyboards or other input methods", then click the Change Keyboards button.  Based on your model, you should have the English (United States) - US option selected.  If some other keyboard is selected, that can cause some weirdness with your keyboard.
    Good Luck!
Although I am an HP Employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.
