Erasing Motion 3 Projects Cleanly

Hello....
I have been a FCP Studio 2 (FCS 6-Soundtrack Pro-Compressor-DVD Studio Pro) user for the last couple years now, and I'm just trying to figure out Motion 3. (I know....don't ask. lol)
Anyway, I was doing a test EFX project over video that I shot, and after completing it, and sending it back to FCP for encoding into a MPEG4 file, I then went back to the project file on Motion and erased everything connected with it. The dated/time folders, ect.
That I found out was something of a mistake, because when I tried to boot Motion again, the welcome page came up, but after hitting that, the project pane never showed up again.
So....after realizing there isn't that much time for OSX Leopard as well as FCS 2 (Plus my 'Puter.), I took my original system drive, erased it, installed all of the OS from scratch, and then doing the same with FCS 2, updates, drivers, ect. and then use Time Machine to backup again to the 500 Gig. system drive. (Then taking the 160 out of the drive bay and putting it aside again.)
It's a bit extreme I know, but it's the only way to be sure that everything is working again....
So...is there a way to get rid of Motion 3 projects and sending them to the trash without residuals, and clearing up hard drive space +without damaging the program beyond repair?+ :/
Thanks....

Well, let me see....
At the time, I deleted all of the files that related to the test footage that I was working on. One of them might have been one of the Motion system files, but I'm not sure.
I guess what I am trying to say here is: Is there a simple way to send any finished project files or project files that I don't need anymore directly to the trash?
I'd suggest you try deleting the Motion Preferences file first before a full re-install...
Hmmm....is that an easier way to get Motion back online?
I did a full re-install (And backup) of Final Cut Studio 2 because Version 3 is out now, and most if not everyone has turned they're backs on the older software already....
Thanks....
BTW, do you have a solution or work-around to my other question also?

You can't directly. You can either export a file, or you can save it as a template, effect, title, transition, or generator, that can be used in FCP.

  • Motion 4 crashes when opening Motion 3 project

Updated to new box and software. I have a ton of projects that were built w/ motion 3.
I reuse all motions movements and effects with replacement of text & video only. When I open Motion 3 project i get the prompt "This is earlier version..." and asks Open Orig or Open as Untitled. Have tried both and same result ....crashola. I've been doing this for awhile and need to open these....
Haven't seen this in searching community....
    Thanx in advance

I'm having the same problem too. I've tried opening the file with and without Motion being open, opened as Original file and untitled document. It just crashes, here's the top of my crash report

  • Motion 5 Projects In Premiere Pro CC

I recently went from Final Cut Studio to Adobe Creative Cloud and was pleased when I discovered that I could import Motion 4 projects into Premiere Pro CC and they worked just as well in the timeline as they did in Final Cut 7. Unfortunately OSX Mavericks has some performance issues with Motion 4, so I decided to upgrade to Motion 5 as it is only $50 in the app store. Now whenever I import a Motion 5 project into Premiere it imports fine, but when I add it to the timeline it just displays the media missing message in the Program monitor, is says "Media Missing in Motion File Untitled.motn" (Untitled.motn is just the name I gave my test Motion project).
Is there any steps I can take to remedy this? I really liked being able to use Motion for quick graphics, so if I could get Motion 5 projects to wok in Premiere Pro CC that would great! I understand that I could export the Motion 5 project, but this means I need to reexport every time I want to make a change, the convenience of seeing the change take place in real time cannot be understated.
    Motion 5.1
    Premiere Pro 7.2.2
    OSX 10.9.3

I'm in the same boat as you...
Pretty safe to say that Motion 5 is not supported. Time to learn After Effects.

  • File Project Clean up is crashing Logic every time

File>Project>Clean up is crashing Logic every time. I just copied the project folder to a brand new external 1TB Glyph hard drive. Everything has been working fine. The project is very big, with about 120 tracks. I am sure that I have lots of files to clean up, as I have been working on this project for months, and I have auditioned probably hundreds of soft synths that I'm not using anymore. Simultaneously, the Universal Control software (that controls the Presonus Firestudio Tube software mixer) has gotten buggy and now freezes all the time. I've come to a stand still and am not sure where the problem is.

    Having this same problem now.
    Any luck with yours?
I found a workaround: I had a big project going with lots of different logic projects in one folder--thinking that would save time and space, because they referenced many of the same soundfiles.
I started doing cleanups after a while, and they started crashing logic, i got the spinning ball, the fan turned on immediately to high, activity monitor told me that logic wanted 100% of CPU time, and always had to force quit.
I took the latest project and created a new folder, stuck the project in it, opened the file, then saved, which copied all the soundfiles into that new folder. Then when i did a cleanup, it worked fine.
So it has something to do with, er, having too many projects in one folder? too many sound files referenced by too many different projects?
I don't know. But there exists this workaround.
    HTH.

  • Premiere CC can't import Apple Motion files after clean install

Got a new SSD so I decided to do a spankin new install of everything except Final Cut Pro legacy (which I thought I could finally do without). Only snag has been that Premiere CC can't import my Apple Motion projects (version 3) and I can't encode ProRes anymore. Rather than do a lengthy install of the whole Final Cut Studio I just decided to purchase Motion 5 and thought all the functionality would come back. Nope. Premiere's browser won't even display .motn files and if I try to "import" them they are greyed out.
So now I'm stumped. Do I need to install Motion first and then Premiere CC?
    MacPro Mavericks
    Premiere 7.2.2

    Hi R & G,
I don't believe Motion 5 projects are supported. Motion 4, or earlier, as I understand it. You can install FCP to get the ProRes codecs back.
    Thanks,

  • Save Motion 3 projects at Motion 2

I have some Motion 3 projects that I need to play back in Motion 2. Is there a way to "Save As..." Motion 2?

Yes there is hack that you can do because a Motion project is saved as a text file. However, you do run the risk of trying to run functionality that doesn't exist in previous versions such as 3D etc.
To try to run a Motion project on a lower version:-
    1) Open up the Motion project in text editor
    2) Close to the top will be the Motion number the project was generated on (eg 3.0.2)
    3) Change this to your version of Motion
    4) Save as
    5) Open this file in the lower version of Motion
    6) Jump for joy or swear at your machine
Of course, all tinkering done at the owners risk.

  • Can't open motion 4 project with motion 5 !

When I open a Motion 4 project with Motion 5 I get the followwing message : Le document « origine.motn » n’a pas pu être ouvert.
meaning the document can't be open ! Any ideas ?

There is something wrong with the file.  Normally Motion 5 can open Motion 4 project files.  Open in Motion 4, Save As, try again.

  • HT201108 Transferring Motion 4 files to Motion 5 Project

I have recently purchased FCPX and Motion 5 having used FCP Studio for several years. My first attempt to transfer  a FCP7 project to FCPX using "7 to X Final Cut Pro" was partialy successful however, none of the Motion 4 files in the project would transfer.
Can't find information in the Motion 5 manual so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
    Ray B.

FCPX unlike FCP Studio does not allow you to open Motion Projects whether they are from Motion 4 or 5. In other words there is no round tripping in FCPX. You can open your Motion 4 projects in Motion 4 and save them as a Quicktime movie and import that to FCPX. Motion 5 will open some Motion 4 projects but not all since Motion 5 doesn't have all the same behaviors, filters image units etc.If the Motion 4 project opens in 5 you may still have to make some editing adjustments.Motion 5 has templates for transitions, titles, effects and generators that allow you to create those types of projects and publish them to FCPX and they will appear in the appropriate tab in FCPX effects browser. So if some of your Motion 4 projects fall in one of those categories then you might try that approach. Other wise save them as Quicktime movie and import to FCPX.

  • System hang when opening Motion 5 project

    Hi,
Just bought Motion 5 and I am playing around with it for a while now. Today I created a Motion 5 project, which went pretty well. Later I wanted to open it again but was unable to do so. When I try, it starts loading the components in the time line, but it then dies and I cannot do anything anymore  except do a hard reboot ???!!! Memory is showing 50%
Earlier I had set a preference to open the last project when Motion starts. The consequence of that was it would use up all memory (4GB) immediately after startup and leave my system unusable. I then deleted the Motion plist files, so it would at least start up. I can start a new project, but, as I said earlier, cannot open an existing project anymore.
Does anybody have any ideas ?

Thanks for your response. That is exactly what I did. I used an app (AppCleaner) which identifies all copmponents of an app, including all plists. So I removed Motion completely, downloaded it again from the Appstore and reinstalled. No luck.
Yesterday I created a tiny Motion project with only a single clip and a light and was able to open that again. Projects created earlier will not open, though, and cause the complete system to stall to the extent that even force quit is not possible anymore.
The console log shows a couple of messages that might give a clue:
Pretty strange, btw, that a single app is capable of neutralizing an operating system. I have always thought this was a Windows thingy, but not Apple.....

  • Erased Hard Drive for Clean Install of Leopard, Hard drive is gone!

I put in my Leopard Install disk to do a clean install of everything as I was going to give this iMac to someone. I erased the hard drive and then started the Leopard install. It stopped half way through and that was that! Now the hard drive does not appear as my Macintosh HD anymore. When I open disc utility, it lists it as just a 150MB hard drive; no name, no volume. If I try to format it again, it says "resource busy". If I try to install Leopard, it just keeps looking for a drive to install it in. Bummer. Any ideas how I can get my hard drive to be recognized again? It is an iMac G5, 5 years old with no other problems before this. Thanks.

Try shutting down (powering off). Then start it up again using your Mac OS X installation disc, and run Disk Utility as you did before. This time, try going to the Partition tab (instead of using the Erase tab). Reset the +Volume Scheme+ to *1 Partition*, even if it already has only one partition. Click the Options button, and make sure it is set for *Apple Partition Map*. Name the volume +Macintosh HD+, set the Format to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+, and Apply.
See if that works any better.
