Essbase Studio - Import Catalog using an automatic process

Hello,
I'd like to make the process of importing Essbase Studio catalog more automatic in the customer environment. Instead of having to open Essbase Studio application every time I want to deploy a new version of the catalog ( either full or partial ), is there any way to export/import the catalog using a unix shell script or DOS command ?
Thanks in advance
Victor

I think the options will be quite limited for automating migrations until 11.1.2.3 where LCM supports Studio.

  • Transaction control without using dml automatic processing

    hello everyone
    question:
How can you make a statement like
    update mytable set <whatever> where id = <primary key>
a transaction (committing it to database and rolling back if any part of the statement fails)
The tabular form is able to detect lost updates.
How would i be able to implement the same functionality in code (e.g. for updating a primary key without using a view)

    Hi,
the first step of the job should contain program SAPF120 and second step should be program RSBDCSUB.
Thanks for sharing your solution if you have another solution.

  • Essbase Studio Cube Deployment Error

    Hi,
I am trying to deploy a cube using essbase studio 11.1.1.3.00. I am getting this error.
    \\Record #1203 - Unable to write smartlist 801990, error code 1060301
Any ideas what the issue is? I can't find anything on the error and I don't have any idea what smartlist would have to do with the deployment.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
I assume that the Essbase studio version is 11.1.2 and above.
The error is caused by the Essbase Studio Server failing to establish a connection with the SQL Database Server and you can try the following:
    1) Back up the server.properties file and alter it in the following manner:
Change the server.essbase.streamingCubeBuilding=true to server.essbase.streamingCubeBuilding=false (use Essbase drivers)
    2) Set the ODBCINST variable to point directly to odbcinst.ini
    3) Then, the BPMS service should be restarted.
    The file is named:
    startBPMS_bpms1_Server.bat on Windows;
    startBPMS_bpms1_Server.sh on UNIX.
    Note:
The Essbase Studio Server startup file contains the commands necessary to start Essbase Studio Server. During the configuration process , the EPM System Configurator writes information to the startup file about the computer on which Essbase Studio is installed so that Essbase Studio Server can start properly. Oracle recommends that you do not manually edit the startup file.
The start up file is installed by default in:
    MIDDLEWARE_HOME/user_projects/epmsystem1BPMS/bpms1/bin

  • How to set alias using Essbase Studio?

I have read through P113-P118 "Oracle Essbase Studio User Guide" about the how to set up alias. It seems easy t create the Alias Set according to the document.
I want to set 100-10 alias as "Cola", the information comes from the TBC relational database. The product table in RLDB has field SKU and SKU_Alias columns, the value of SKU is: 100-10,100-20, etc.
    My binding is:
    Source: SKU
    connection : TBC::TBC.Product.SKU_ALIAS
This is using the grammer in page 115
    connection :
    \'<logical_source_name'::'<physical_data_source_name>.<physical_tabl
    e_name>'.'<physical_column_name>'
But after I deployed the cube, I cannot see the product alias name as expected from EAS? I tried 100 times, but cannot find what's wrong with me. Please advise, thanks!
My question: How to set up or associate the alias set with the product items from Essbase Studio so that I can see it from EAS? thanks! Bob
    Edited by: user2571802 on Jan 10, 2010 9:38 PM

First it may be useful to convert the EIS TBC model to Studio, to do this you would have to configure EIS and create the TBC sample application.
Once it has been created in Studio you can go to Tools > EIS Catalog migration and migrate the TBC app from EIS to Studio.
If you use this method all the aliases etc will be already set up so you can see how it is done.
To set up Aliases you would go to
Tools > "Alias set Manager" > Create a new alias say "Default" and add a binding e.g. PRODUCTDIM.SKU to PRODUCTDIM.SKUALIAS
Then on your Model right click "Essbase Properties" > Alias tab > Select the Default alias table and move to the selected tables window.
This should of then assigned the default table, if you check the properties of say PRODUCTDIM.SKU in the alias tab Default and the mapping should be shown.

  • Reset the Previous Import catalog when using auto import

I'm using auto import with a watched folder to add scanned slides to a new catalog. Works fine. My question is about the Previous Import "catalog" that new imports are automatically added to. I had thought that this catalog would be reset after each session (i.e. after closing and restarting LR), but it never resets and still shows every slide that I've automatically imported over the last couple of weeks. Is there any way to clear or reset this?
    I'm using LR3.3

Unfortunately, the Previous Import count cannot be reset without deleting the previous import from the catalog. Silly? Yes!
Also, Previous Import only records the number of files imported during the last import (i.e. via import window, auto import or import from catalog), not the total number of images previously imported. So, I'm not sure why you're getting your total shows the sum of all previous imports.

  • Essbase Studio Console - Cannot migrate existing 9.3.1 Catalog file to 11.1

    Hi
I have been using Essbase 9.3.1 wanted to migrate to Essbase Studio (11.1.1). I tried to use EIS Catalog Migration tool for migrating 9.3.1 catalog files to Essbase 11.1.1, but unfortunately the "Migrate" button in the "EIS catalog Migration" dialog is disabled (although I fetched the models). Does anybody know why the Migrate button is disabled? So, I gave up migrating existing models and created brand new Minischema, Cube Schema and Essbase model from scrach. I am following the Essbase Studio User Guide. When I was creating Essbase model, I had to create Hierarchies for all dimensions because the model accepted only Measures/Measure Hierarchies and Hierarchies. Is this correct?
Also, I want to add attribute dimensions? Since I only have hierarchies, the selecting member as Attributes instruction doesn't make any sense. Can anybody help please?
    Regards
    Chandra

The method you have given is definitely the best one, just treat it like a business rule migration from one server to another.

  • Unable to load data into Essbase cube using Essbase Studio

    Hi
We are creating an essbase cube using Essbase Studio using flat files as data sources.
We have taken different hierarchies into different flat files and created one fact file having dimension intersection along with data.
We are able to create the cube and the hierarchy but not able to load any data.
We are getting the following error
    Failed to deploy Essbase cube.
Caused by: Unable to perform dataload from more than one flat file.
Could anyone please help on this?

Oh this was killing me, so I did this test in 11.1.1.3:
    1) Excel 2007 format -- no go, Essbase didn't see it
    2) Excel 2003 format, three sheets -- only the first sheet was read into an empty rule
    3) Excel 2003 format, one sheet -- the first sheet was read into an empty rule
    4) Excel 95 format, one sheet -- the first sheet was read into an empty rule
    The lesson?
    1) Excel 2007/2010 sheets don't work (no surprise there as the .xlsx format isn't supported).
    2) Excel 2003 and lower (hey, if you have Excel 4, I'll bet that works as well) work, but only the first sheet is recognized.

  • How to use Logical operators in Essbase Studio?

I want to add a new Dimension Element like
    if ( connection : \'SH'::'SH.CUSTOMERS'.'CUST_GENDER' == "M" ) then "Male"
    else "Female"
However, there isn't 'if ... then ...' expression in Essbase Studio. I'm puzzled to the usage of logical operators such as '==', '!=', and so on.

The == and !== are to set conditions for filtering. the ! meand not. In esscense these allow you to get a subset of rows that meet the conditions specified. In your case where Gender == "M" you will only get those rows where the value is "M". What you want to do is transform rows not filter them. I have not looked at studio enough yet to know how to do this, but a few things come to mind. First, you could use text to create the outline menbers instead of values from the tables, you could crete a reference table with the M = Male and F = Female and join to it to get the values or you could use a standard load rule and sql interface to load the data and just build the dimensions and drill through from Studio. I think I would opt for the second option

  • Import Hierarchies into Essbase Studio

    Hi all,
I am running Essbase Studio 11.1.1.3.00.I have exported hierarchies into text files from an EAS database. I want to use the files to create the hierarchies in Studio. Is this possible and how can I do it?
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry I slightly misunderstood. If you are talking about an export, then it will not give you what you need. You would have to get the hierarchies from your Essbase model. Options for doing that would be
    ODI,
the outline extractor available at appliedOlap.com (there is also one from Star Analytics that I don't remember the name of)
    or from the API.
Each of the dimension extracts would have to be in a format acceptable to Studio like Parent child. You would have to include all the properties of each member to get it to build properly. Then you could load your data (either from within studio or with just a load rule.

  • Essbase studio export

I want to deploy a cube design from development to production and I am using the file -> export feature of studio.
when I export a cube, i just have the cube selected with "include associated essbase models with cube schemas" ticked.
when i import the file into our production instance it fails.
i looked at the export file and it seems to contain the deployment history from development, plus.
+ some of the dimension data we load
+ osme of the load errors we have had in the past.
There appears to be no way to delete the deployment history.
i do the same export again but with the "include associated essbase models with cube schemas" NOT ticked.
the export is successful and i can import successfully into the production instance.
the production and development instances are 11.1.2
strangely we had this feature working when we did our initial tests on studio, but somewhere something has gone astray
grateful if anyone could shine the light on this issue.
    many thanks
    jack

Have you read the section on exporting/importing in the studio admin doc as it should help answer your question - "Exporting and Importing the Essbase Studio Catalog Database" - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/est_user.pdf

  • Migraton from EIS to Essbase Studio

    Hi All,
We try to migrate the existing EIS (32 bits setup) into Essbase Studio (64 bits) environment.
The old EIS and SQL2000 are both installed on separate servers.
In the new environment we have a seperate server for Studio and SQL2008.
How to use the migration function ?
I have create an ODBC on the Studio-server with a connection to the SQL2000 server.
When I start the EIS catalog Migration, fill in the EIS Catalog ODCC DSN with the just created ODBC-name.
Then press the Fetch Models button and the message: No models could be fetched for the catalog etc.
What's going wrong. Your reaction is much appriciated !!
    Regards,
    Ed

    Thanks Glenn,
that gives me a better approach for my solution.
As metadata/data loading to the Planning application (workforce) will be part of an integration process we could then:
    1. Load new Metadata to the Planning application
    2. Refresh the planning databases
    3. Run a MAXL Script to redeploy the Essbase-Studio cube (which is actually the Planning cube)
    4. Load aggregated data to Essbase cube
    5. Load detailed data to relational table in Essbase Studio.
now the cube is deployed with Essbase Studio so drill through should work as expected.
The integration process will be created in ODI so ODi will be responsible of loading metadata and data, and also executing the MAXL script for cube re-deployment
Do you think we are missing something in the macro steps above?

  • Essbase Studio Cube Migration

    Hi All,
We have a requirement where we want to migrate our Essbase Studio Cube from one environment to another. We want to migrate the entire catalog/models/cube/data.
Can anyone mention the correct sequence to follow.
    (Version: 11.1.1.3)
I was trying to search this in forum; I found that the cubes can be migrated via LCM while the catalog migration is difficult.
    Also please verify my understanding:
    1. LCM cannot be used for Studio v11.1.1.3.
    2. The catalog export/import option is not available for v11.1.1.3. It was introduced for v11.1.2.
Any response will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks.

LCM still does not support studio in 11.1.2.2
11.1.2.0 Studio New Features - "In this release, you can replicate the Essbase Studio catalog database among different machines for various administrative purposes, such as making catalog backups, restoring the catalog, and moving the catalog from one machine to another. Essbase Studio now provides an option to export the catalog into an XML file. This file can then be imported to a new location or a different machine to recreate the catalog. You can selectively copy some catalog objects, export to an XML file, and then recreate these objects in a new location or on a different machine."

  • Schedule Essbase Studio

    Hi.
I'm looking for a way to schedule loading of essbase cubes throuh Essbase Studio. Anyone who knows where to find information regarding this?
In Integration Services this worked, but in Essbase Studio I cannot find this kind of functiionality. I can see there is something called StartCommandLineClient.bat but if this is what i am lokking for I don't know. And if there are any kind of help.
    Anyone?
    Regards Henrik

    Hi,
It is not possible from within studio yet, from the 11.1.1.3 Studio readme
    System Limitations
Essbase Studio does not have equivalent functionality for the following features that were available in Essbase Integration Services:
+· The ability to automate cube construction using a scheduler functionality+
WORKAROUND: There are two ways to schedule cube deployment outside of Essbase Studio:
+· You may create a deployment script that uses the MaxL “deploy” command. Then, use a scheduling tool of your choice to schedule the script to run.+
+· Alternatively, you can create rules files using the Essbase Studio Console or the MaxL “deploy” command with the rules files only option. Then, create a deployment script that uses the MaxL “import data” command using the pre-created rules to automate cube construction. Again, use a scheduling tool of your choice to schedule the script to run.+

  • How can I move a folder to another catalog using LR 3

I have imported a large amount of folder into cat#1, but now i have decided to create cat#2. I have tried to move the "folders" and not "catalog" using the following workflow:
1- Opening cat #1, make selection of folder to be moved
2- Go to file and select "Export as a cat".
3- Opened cat #2, go to File and select "Import catalog"
4- Importing window shows the entire list of folders I had imported previously (lots of them). They all are checked. I can see the path, but only see the location of the folders, but I can't read the name of the files. I am able to see the total number on each folder
5- I have not even considering "synchronizing" the folder
Oh another thing, when I go to cat#1 and locate the folder I "exported as a catalog". The folder still shows on cat#1, but I don't see it on cat#2. I guess because I didn't complete the task.
I find it very tedious process trying to locate the file. And this is where I'm stuck
I have searched so many ways to find a workflow that would make sense, but I tend to get nothing but responses about how to move a "catalog". I have been thinking doing the following:
1- Remove the folder from cat#1
2- Open cat#2 and import the same folder, but this again seems to redundant, boring and a lot of clicking. Any suggestions.

Hm... Well, for everyone else the reply link is still on the website, and works fine soo....
Tell me about it. I went to catalog #2 and I didn't see the exported
catalog. Then I went back to catalog #1 and I still can see the entire
folder that I had selected to Export. I double checked it the process and it
seemed ok, but apparently there's something missing to complete the export
You seem under the impression that exporting as a catalog removes the images from the first catalog.  This is not true.  As I said earlier, it makes a copy for you.  So of course, when you go back into catalog1, all of your images/collections/etc, are still there.  As they should be.
So, you say you didn't see anything in your exported catalog?  Are  you sure you are opening the same catalog you just exported, or  have you opened a new blank one that you created, accidentally or not?  That would be my guess.
I think you should start over, and very carefully take it one step at a time.
Dj has suggested not using include negatives, and I can see where that might be useful.  However, if you do that, you will end up having images from two different catalogs in the same folder.  This will cause problems if you ever use the "sync folder" option, as it will attempt to load all images in that folder into your current catalog. Which means you could easilly end up with all your images in both catalogs.  Messy.   So to avoid this, use a new place instead.  You can also avoid having to do the "import to catalog" step by exporting the negatives at the same time.  Don't worry about exporting previews, though.
First, find a new place (external disk, whatever) to create a new catalog in.  Do _not_ create the new catalog your self!  Make sure you are sending everything to a new place!
Now, go into catalog1, and select all of the images you want to export.  They have to be selected, or nothing happens, and you'll just get a blank catalog.
Now, export as catalog those images into the new location, and make sure you are copying the negatives too!  Double check before you hit go!
Now, using LR, open that new catalog; you can either double click on the new one, or browse to open it.  Either way.  Verify that your images are in the new place and everything looks good.  You can see in the Folders tab on the left panel to make sure the images are in the right place in the new folder.
At this point, you should have 2 and a half catalogs;  your new catalog with only the images you exported, and the old catalog, with all of your images.
Now, you have a couple of choices.  But before you do either of them, make sure you backup your system, including all of the images in the original catalog.  If you've messed up making the new catalog (you should be able to tell!) then you want to make sure your original catalog can be restored.
Open your original catalog again, and now remove all of the images you exported.  You will need to use the "remove from disk" option, as they will stay in the folders if you don't.  This would cause the above problem with "sync folder", and of course, use double the disk space.
You can obviuosly see why I said to back everything up first;  if you messed up the export by not including the negatives, you could easilly delete your originals, and not have them _anywhere_, in which case  you would have to restore from back up and try again.
You now have two separate catalogs.
Remember, backup everything first, and good  luck!
    Cheers!

  • SRM-MDM catalog 3.0 - Installation Process

    Hi All,
I'm in the process of installing SRM-MDM catalog 3.0 but I'm not sure about the correct installation process.
The SRM-MDM catalog 3.0 installation guide indicates that the following instances are mandatory for SRM-MDM Catalog system:
1- Java system with the central instance, the central services instance, the database instance
2- MDM Server, and MDM Import Server
We have covered the first point by installing an SRM 7.0 JAVA system. Regarding the second requirement, I have some doubts in the way it should be completed. What we did so far was to install the SRM-MDM catalog 3.0 from the MDM 7.1 installation master. So, we now have two MDM server instances: MDS and MDIS.
I'm stuck now. I'm not sure on how to connect my SR-MDM system to the JAVA DB (created in step 1) to create a new MDM schema within it. This makes me wonder if I've followed the correct process. Could you please clarify and explain which steps should be performed to get my SRM-MDM system up and running? Actually my main concern is..Should I first install a MDM system as it's described in MDM IG, and after that perform the installation of the SRM-MDM catalog as I've already done in step 2?
Hope being clear enough I'll wait for your suggestions.
    Thanks and regards

    Hi Diego.
The Installation Note Number for SRM-MDM Catalog 3.0 is : 1177779. The recommended steps would be to follow how the Installation Guide recommends you to do so.
But still your assumption is correct. MDM landscapes and Java landscapes are both different set of categories to be installed to make the Catalog scenario to be successfull.
Step 1:  Make sure you have the back end database server(SQL/Oracle/???) is installed.
Step 2:  Make sure all the MDM components(MDS, MDIS, etc) is installed.
Step 3:  Make sure Java WebAS is installed correctly.
Step 4:  Now deploy the Catalog SCA and MDM Connector deployed in the Java WebAS.
Step 5: You can unarchive and load the repository.
Step 6:  Try to launch the catalog using the URL provided to check and make sure if the connection is fine.
Also what Masa has mentioned is the communication path how the whole process is achieved technically and that doesn't mean that it has to be in the same order which he has mentioned. The below sequence is just an path to describe how the communication is achieved technically.
User -> Browser(Search UI deployed on AS Java) -> (Java API on AS Java) -> MDM Server -> MDM Repository -> DB
Relating Masa's path with the above steps
    User ->
Browser(Search UI deployed on AS Java) -> Step 3 and 4
(Java API on AS Java) -> Step 3 and 4
    MDM Server -> Step 2
    MDM Repository -> Step5
    DB-> Step 1
    Hope this helps.
