Estimating Archivelog size

##PLEASE REPLY TO IT As IT IS URGENT##
We have a database of approx 2 TB in size of version 10.2.0.4 - 64 bit production. It is a RAC configuration with 2 nodes running. There is no DR database for it yet. ASM is used for storage. Currently it is in NO ARCHIVELOG mode and there is NO backup policy yet defined.
We need to put this database in archive log mode and apply a backup policy for it. Our query is how much space it will take to store one day archive files.
Secondly we are planning to have RMAN level 0 backup weekly and incremental backup then after every day, so we would like to estimate the size for level 0 backup sets.
NOTE: It is an OLTP database and daily approx 20 GB data is inserted into it.

HarryWe do not can say exactly how much space you need,this is depend of size of archivelogs which generating one day and your backup plolicy ,but you have to need DB size all archive logs size incemental backup size if you take every day incremental and every week end full.

How to update "Estimated File Size"

As I fiddle around with my Export Settings (CS4), I don't see any update in the "Estimated File Size" info at the bottom left of the screen.
It seems to me that as I move the Target Bitrate and Maximum bitrate (as well as the other options), I would see the Estimated File size increase or decrease so I can have real time feedback on my settings.
Is there a setting I need to change or a command I need to make in order to see an updated "Estimated File Size"?

Nevermind. I see that the sliders do indeed give me a reak time updated file size. Don't know how I missed it.

Estimated File Size not updating

I have a project in vers. 5.5 that I am exporting.
I am saving as a Windows Media File and am going from 1080 to 720. File size is critical, however the Estimate File Size in Encoder seems to get stuck. For instance, if I half the frame rate I see no difference in file size. I would think that there would be significant reduction in estimated file size if half the frames are being tossed. Am I not understanding something about how this works?

There are only two things that significantly affect file size - duration and bitrate. Changing other specs may affect quality, but those two determine file size.

Estimated Backup size

Hi,
I'm tryin to use TM for the first time to backup my internal disc of my MacBook Pro to a newly bought external one.
The internal drive (the source for the backup) has a total capacity of 232,9 GB (250.059.350.016 Bytes) according to Disk Utility of which 98,0 GB (105.187.246.080 Bytes) are used.
Time Machine however claim for the initial backup it is to backing up 422.42 GB which is about 4.3 times the amount of data on my drive!
Is this normal? Why is it that far off the weeds?
This actually doesn't give me a very good feeling regarding the reliability of Time Machine.
Needles to say the initial backup runs endless....
BTW: Forgot to mention: This 10.5.8 and the external drive is 1.5 TB, USB 2.0

I don't use File Vault, and it does some strange things vs. Time Machine. As I understand it, you should have both a normal home folder and a sparse image (the encrypted version). That's the "horst" volume in the second UUID message.
Right. That's what I found out in the meantime.
Your "normal" home folder should have been excluded automatically. If you now exclude it manually, however, it doesn't sound like that will get to the correct size.

And yes, it's FileVault confusing not only Time Machine but rather the entire system:
When I select my home folder in Finder's sidebar and do a Get Info on it, the Finder tells me my home folder is has a capacity of 465.13 GB of which 330.56 GB are used (which is entire crap since my entire hard disk only is about 233 GB and the amount of dat in my home folder is about 48 GB).
But then it sums up fairly well: 330 GB (of assumed data) plus 98 GB actual data on disk are about the estimated backup size, TM is reporting.
The Unix command df reports the same false data, so there obviously is something wrong in Leopard's calculation of FileVault sizes:

Do you really need your entire home folder encrypted? It's not going to play well with TM, even under the best of circumstances. You won't be able to see the details of what was backed-up, and I don't believe you can restore individual items. Plus, TM will only back it up when you log out, not on it's normal hourly schedule.
What I tried but after logging out, the previous backup stopped. I see TimeMachine and FileVault aren't really good friends, possibly even mutually exclusive. If I have to choose I'll stick to FikeVault because seemless data encryption for me is currently more important than hourly backups.
Maybe I'll have to investigate in a different backup strategy

The estimated project size is larger than the target media chosen

I am at a loss for trying to author a project using Adobe Encore. I first tried to author the project using version CS2. When attempting to export I received the following message:
"The estimated project size is larger than the target media chosen. While this is an estimate, the project may fail to build."
I have authored hundereds of projects in the past, but have never received that message before. I first thought that the problem was with the version of Encore I was using, but I received the exact same error when trying to author the project with Encore CS5.
The project itself has one menu, a motion menu, and one video file. The video file last 152 minutes, and I was attempting to export that to a dual layer DVD. I have since tried exporting the file using Adobe Premier CS5.5 using a variety of settings. I am trying to export it to a DVD-2 file, with the match soure attributes being set to the highest setting. The setting on the main concept MPEG encoder is set to 5. I have tried exporting the file using both constant and varaible bit rates.
When I recently exported the file using a contant bit rate of 6.5, I still had 650.4 MB remaining on my Encore project. I still received the same error about the project size, and so I am thinking that something else is wrong.
I have even exported the video file as an uncompressed AVI file, and then tried encoding it again using both Adobe Premier CS5.5 and the Adobe Encoder. I still get the same error message about file size.
Any help and/or suggestions about how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Using the Imgburn product worked! It also helped me figure out what the real problem was...
As it turns out, some single-layer DVDs had been mixed in with my dual-layer DVDs. I feel very foolish about this. All of my discs are printable, and so there is no indication written as far as what their capacity is on them.
Encore can be a bit vague in identifying a problem such as this. For example, I can set the settings to plan for a dual-layer disc, and it will display a graphical status indicator with that capacity in mind. When I saw the original file message error I honestly believed that there was a problem with the encoded file instead of the type of disc itself.
Imgburn instantly displayed the discrepancy in the type of disc I had loaded and the needed capacity for the type of project that I was trying to create.

How come exporting to mov never shows estimated file size ?

Hi everyone,
I export to mov more often now, that one of my buddies works exclusively on a mac.
He lives vids in .mov format, but one thing I don't understand, is why there is no estimated file size, as with every other format I can export to ?
Does anyone know why ?
Also, whenever I choose to output to .mov the "include audio" button is always not "on" by default, however, with all other export formats it is enabled.

I certainly don't. I assume that the Quicktime interaction with Premiere Pro just doesn't provide that information the way the drivers that Adobe wrote (or bought) do.

Determining Estimated Bean Sizes

Hi,
When setting up an application-level entity bean cache[b], as well as setting the total megabyte value for the cache, we are required to set the [b]estimated-bean-size for each bean using the cache.
I guess the class sizes (bean class + container geenrated bean subclass + EJB Local object class) would not be an accurate way to arrive at the estimated bean size. What is the best approach to determining the estimated bean size?
Also, is there any way to monitor such application-level caches in the console? I am unable to find anything regarding this.
We are using WLS 7.0 service pack 1.

I am using java version "1.4.1_03" with weblogic 8.1 sp1. In order to get estimated bean size we ran weblogic with hprof on. Hprof shows the size of the object it's profiling:
To run with java with hprof:
java -Xrunhprof:heap=sites
these settings produce a reduced log but it will still be quite large.
The section your interested in is:

You can see the size of your objects here. I don'r now if there are any issues with accuracy but this looks ok.

Estimated file size in Media Encoder too big by 8 GB, Why? Need to be accurate

I completed a 2 and a half hour project in Premiere Pro CS 5.5 at 1440 x 1080i
I went to encode it through Media Encoder. (File ---- Export ------ Media) the box opened up and I set my settings. I encoded it at (CBR)
I looked at the file size and it said it was estimated at 15GB, which is what I wanted it to be.
It took 4 hours to encode and when it was done I looked at the file size and it was 23 GB.
Why? It said it was going to be 15 GB
I imported it into Encore as an asset and put it on a timeline. Encore says the project is now 31 GB (I do have Animated Butons with Moviing Videos inside of them so that is adding to the size).
How can I get an accurate size so when it says it going to be 15 GB it is going to be 15 GB?

Estimating cache size

I want to know how to estimate the size of tha cache memory, that is the value of the parameter:
DB_CACHE_SIZE
is there any criteria to estimate it??
I'm working with partiotioned tables of ten millions rows. This tables are indexed and a normal query on this tables return about 10000 rows.
The maximun number of users working simultaneous and making sql's to this tables are 60.
Any advice about cache size will be greatly apreciatted.

Hi,
if you have the parameter db_cache_advice set to ON then the view v$db_cache_Advice can show you the expected I/O for an estmated cache size.
You query this view under typical workload, not directely after startup. With this you can find out if it would meake sense to increase the buffer cache.

Estimating Video Size for Project

Hello All,
I have captured 626x480 video from a camcorder and wish to author a dvd5 project but I am uncertain as to how to estimate the video's running time such that it fits onto a 4.7gb dvd. Is this a way in imovie to notify the user if such a video would surpass this limit?
My workflow would be the following, edit the raw footage then export the video (Large 720x540) and from idvd import the video file. Does this make sense?

iDVD has a hard limit of 2 hours total video on a DVD-5, including video embedded in menus. By minimizing the length of menu video loops I have been able to get up to 115 minutes of actual video using the Professional Quality option for DVD compression (which takes longer to process).
If you want to include extras such as still photos on the DVD, you will reduce your running time proportionally to the space they use.
The expensive professional compression software in Final Cut Studio will let you get more video on a DVD by using a lower bit rate, if you are willing to accept a loss in quality. You also have to be willing to learn how to use a very complex program with a lot of options.

Estimating the Database Size using Archivelog mode

I need to find guidelines to estimate the additional space needed for a database in order to operate in archivelog mode.
I've estimated the size of a database (Tables + indexes= 450 GB + 270 GB) operating in nonarchivelog mode, but I didn't know how to estimate the additional space needed to operate the database in archivelog mode.
Please any kind of information will be well received!

The space required for archive logs does not depend on the size of your database. It is dependent on 3 factors.
1. The size of your redo log members. Each archive log will be the same size as a redo log file.
2. The number of transactions you do in the database. Each transaction writes information to the redo logs, and each redo log is archived when it is full.
3. How laong a period you want to keep the archive logs available on disk for.
For example, one of our systems is a very active OLTP system with about 500 users at peak times and around 100 fairly constantly. The database is about 40Gb, but it spins 15 - 20 64Mb archive logs each day. Typically, we keep 2 days worth of logs on-line at any given time. so, this system requires between 1.8 and 2.5 GB for archive logs.
Another system, used mostly for reporting purposes, is over 100GB, but typically generates 5 - 6 32MB archive logs each week. So, it requires less than 200Mb for archive logs.

Adobe Media Encoder - File Size HUGE. HELP

I have a MPG that is 216mb. When I attempt to use Media Encoder 5 or 5.5 the estimated file size for a 640 x 480 f4v is 26456mb.
I have used the computer at my school with the same file and the file size is 2mb. What am I doing wrong at home? I can't image encoder can make a 216mb file become 2.6 gb.

Please drop the source clip into MediaInfo and check what it says the duration is. (If you don't have MediaInfo, you can download it for free from the Internet.) If possible, please post a link to the clip so that we can download it and check it out for ourselves.
Two details catch my eye in the Source Summary. Both screenshots show that the field order is Unknown and that the clip has no audio. I doubt either of those details accounts for the incorrect duration, but the unknown field order, at least, makes me wonder whether AME is having trouble interpretting the footage correctly. I suggest going to the Interpret Footage dialog (right-click on the clip in AME's queue and select Interpret Footage), and setting the Field Order to the correct value [Upper Field First, Lower Field First, or No Fields (Progressive Scan)]. While you're there, check whether the frame rate is accurate--according to the screenshot, it's 30.000 fps. Is that accurate?

Is there a way to set target size in Compressor

I know this may be too general of a question, but i'd really like to find a way to set the size of a compressed file. I have to upload videos to and online host server and my max is 1.5 GB. right now i have to fool around and try different codecs to see how big they are and sometimes i have 20-30 minute videos. and it's pretty poor work flow to wait an hour to encode only to find out that it's way tpp small or way too big.
also any suggestions on which codec i should use to upload videos from 15 seconds to 30 minutes with a 1.5 GB size cap would be great

I'll answer your first question first.
Best codec for quality is H.264, one good settings folder is the following:
Settings tab>Apple>Other workflows>Web>QT7 compatible>Pick your H.264 setting (For flv you'll need a third party plugin or software).
You want to know how big your file is going to be before encoding?
Choose your setting. Set your preferred bit rate then in Inspector window click on the "summary" button (first from left before the encoder button).
Look carefully through the listed info, there you'll find out what the estimated file size is. If you change bit rate again the estimated size will change too.
