Ethernet DHCP not working on new iMac

I have a new 24" iMac and cannot get it to work over Ethernet with DHCP and NAT provided by an Airport Extreme (b/g model). The Aiport router is used to connect to Verizon DSL through a Verizon-supplied Westell ADSL modem. The Airport is configured for PPPoE and automatically provides DHCP and NAT in that configuration. I have a Netgear 5 port switch connected to the Ethernet port on the Airport router and a Xerox printer and the new iMac connected to the switch so that all computers on the network can share the printer.
I have several other computers (Macs and a PC) that all work fine with WiFi through the Airport router. The new iMac also works pretty well with its supplied Airport card, although the connection is sometimes lost when the Mac goes to sleep. The iMac is close to the router, which is why I would prefer to use Ethernet and take advantage of higher speed and a more reliable connection for printing large files.
I have tried everything I can think of to get Ethernet to work, including creating different Network configs, one just-Ethernet, one just-Wifi. Typically when I enable Ethernet, the iMac does not get an IP address from DHCP but assigns itself one. Even if I try to manually set a valid IP for my network, I cannot ping any other device including the Airport router.
I have tested the cable/switch/router combination by plugging a PowerBook in place of the iMac, and Ethernet works flawlessly for the laptop. I used to have an older Linksys router and had the Airport configured as a bridge, and that didn't work either, which led me to buy the Netgear switch and configure the Airport as my primary router. I was thinking perhaps there was a hardware issue with the newer Gig Ethernet controller on the iMac and the very old Linksys router/switch. But no dice.
So my only conclusion is that either the Ethernet controller on the Mac is kaput or that there is some config magic that I don't understand.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Rob

Sorry, I've been offline for the holidays. I tried what you suggested, configed the Powerbook and iMac for manual IP (192.168.1.220 and .230 with subnet 255.255.255.0) and connected them directly and could not ping from either machine. Here is the output requested:

  • HT1175 3TB time capsule not working with new iMac

I have a 3TB time capsule that's c. 2 years old. It worked perfectly with my old iMac. I bought a new 27" one when it came out this year and since the time capsule will not work.
I had to clear all the data as a starter. Now it gets a little into the backup taking c. 1 day then resets. It's connected via ethernet cable and has been told to join an existing network.
Currently it says it's backing up 922,498 items, after 2 hours (this is the third attempt, it resets then has no record of the old backup) it says 10kb of 789.44 GB - About 4,664,440 days remaining!!
To clarify I'm trying to use Time Machine with the Time Capsule.
    Please help!!

You have made a mistake in the setup.
You do not "Join an existing networking" and use ethernet.. they are mutually exclusive.
What you are doing is backing up over double hop wireless which is slowing to a crawl.
You need to put the TC into bridge mode.. and plug it into the main router by ethernet. Then use wiretess to the TC if you are too far away or ethernet if you are close by..
As soon as you put the TC into join a wireless network it deactivates the ethernet.

  • 1st Generation iPod (5GB) not working with new iMac

    Hi,
i have the Problem, that my 1st generation iPod is not detected by my new imac (20'' 2,4 Ghz). When i plug in the firewire cable, nothing happens. DiscUtility sees no disc at all.
But when i plug in the iPod "behind" another Firewire disc (acting as a fw-hub), the iPod ist detected within a second, and everything works fine.
I just wanted to know if someone else is having this Problem, or if someone else has a working iPod 1.Gen on the new iMac.
    Thanks
    Joerg

    Hi JvdL,
I am one with a 1st gen iPod (Windows, 10GB).
But I have no problems with it and I also don't have a last gen. iMac.
However, in the iPod Forum http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=151 and in the iTunes Forum http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=149&start=0#threads there are quite some threads with similar problems.
    Sorry

    Hello:

  • Logitech Pro 4000 not working with new Imac 24"

Just migrated from a G4 to the new Imac 24"
Cannot get the Logitech Pro 4000 to work with new mac.
    Contacted Logitech and they said
"please note that the QuickCam Pro 4000 currently only supports up to Mac OS X 10.2.6"
However, the cam DID work ,even under 10.4.8 with the old G4...
    Any ideas people..
    Thanks!

Your nwe iMac is Intel based, which is why the old driver failed/ You could try the driver from IOXperts. They do not mention Intel support, but they do list your camera, and have a free trial.

  • External DVI monitor not working with new iMac 27"

I recently purchases a 27" iMac and i'm trying to get it working with a 3rd party DVI external monitor. I got the Apple mini display port (thunderbolt) to DVI adapter and connected everything via a new DVI-D cable. The iMac detects there is a monitor and even shows the display as it should.. however, the monitor has a large amount of static/snow/noise (red coloured), so much so that the monitor is unusable. There is also a considerable amount of flickering.
The monitor works fine when connected to a Mac Mini with the Mini DVI - DVI adapter, (old set up) so I know the monitor's connection is not faulty.
Also, the monitor connects fine to the iMac when using a mini display - VGA adapter. The problem really seems to be with the combonation of DVI cable and adapter.
Has anyone had any experiences with DVI monitors connected to new iMacs via the thunderbolt port?
(System: iMac 27" 2011, 3.4GHz i7, 16GB RAM, Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB. All system updates installed, running OSX 10.7.2)

I think that your assessment is right, the ATI must be on for DVI to work (so far I've only tested with an older T61p and the Quadro graphics are always running).  Can't you set the machine so that when docked the ATI is used, but on battery the internal video is used? That would be what I would try.

  • Isub not working with new imac

the help menu is telling me to make sure that the isub is plugged in, and then to make certain it is selected under sound preferences... the only problem is that the imac is not picking up that the usb is even plugged in- there is no isub option that comes up on the sound preferences.
the isub works fine on my older mac, but just is not being read on the new one. any guesses other than my old isub is obsolete with my new imac?
    thanks
    -pd

The iSub is sweet! It's the best sub I've ever had! There's no reason for it to NOT work with the new Macs. It's a bummer. I still have my iSub, maybe they'll start supporting it again someday.

  • Lightroom not working with new iMac

I just got a new iMac and I imported everything from my old computer using time machine but now lightroom does not work at all. Does anybody know what has gone wrong? All that comes up when I open the program is a grey screen and it does not respond with anything I click, including selecting a catalog.

You need to actually install LR, not let Time Machine transfer it.
If you purchased the regular (non-CC) version of LR, then download the LR 5.3 update from http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates.html
If you have a PS+LR subscription, then click on the Lr icon after logging in at http://creative.adobe.com/products/  If CC thinks you have LR already installed, then you may need to install the www.adobe.com version, uninstall it, log out of CC, reboot, log back into CC, and then try downloading Lr from CC, again.

  • Microsoft WORD & Excel not working on new iMac

I had the MS suite of WORD, Excel and PowerPoint installed on my new iMac OS 10.8.3 by a legitimate programmer w/a totally legal license.  Neither WORD nor Excel will load up.  I get a variety of error messages (i.e. invalid file name, cannot open global template). Power Point works fine.!!!!
I've tried uninstalling and re-installing with no luck.
    Any thoughts?

Unless you used this method to uninstall you may not have correctly uninstalled Office. Do it again using the manufacturers method, Then reinstall.

  • Rosetta not working on new iMac?

I have a brand-new 20" 2.4gHz iMac (aluminum). I used Migration Assistant to get my documents and settings over but I'm doing clean installs of programs and doing Universal binaries whenever possible. So now I'm at Quicken...and my Quicken 2005 would not boot up on the new iMac. OK, I thought, maybe I need to upgrade to Quicken 2007. I did that. Now the installer for that will not run either, nor will Quicken 2007 out of the disk image the installer's also on. I think these are the first two PowerPC apps I've tried to run on this so far.
I read that there's been some trouble with Rosetta apps after the install of Quicktime 7.2 so I followed the instructions in the support doc for that. But it will not let me run the Combo 10.4.10 Intel update on my machine either (says it cannot be run). The line to input into Terminal as described in that doc gives me an error.
I can't go without Quicken -- I need to have it running on my new machine. Any suggestions? :'( I'm dyin' here.

Well, yes, I know that Quicken is not a Universal binary (that is unfortunate). But by all accounts and articles the application should run under Rosetta, yes? (Even says so in that Macworld article.)
That's the actual problem I'm having -- The installer will not run. Nor will the program itself. I don't have any other PowerPC apps on the machine to try them out and check if others are working but I'd assume they're not.

  • My Apple Help Centre menu is not working on new iMac

I have a new 2012 imac 27" and the Help Centre look up menu is not working in my main (admin) account. It is working in my second standard account that I have set up solely for testing the system when things are not working.
If I click on some of the items in the menu I get a message saying "The selected topic is currently unavailable. The topic you were trying to view could not be found." However, some of the help items do show up!
My internet is working fine so it is not because I don't have a connection. As it is working in the other account it seems that there must be some file path anomally with my main account.
Does anybody know of a fix before I give Apple a call?
    thanks

You may be able to solve the problem by deleting the Help cache.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpd
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Move the selected folder to the Trash. Log out, log back in, and test. Help pages will be slow to load at first.
If that doesn't work, the problem may be caused by network conditions. It may go away by itself, though I can't say how long you should wait.
A persistent failure to load help data has been reported as an issue with certain ISP's, such as the Exede satellite network. Test on a different network, if possible. I've also seen at least one report that Photo Stream in iCloud can mysteriously interfere with Help. I'm not sure whether that's true, but try disabling Photo Stream, if applicable.*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Microphone Not Working on New Imac

I just bought a $2000 27 Inch Imac and a few weeks later the microphone quit working and Apple is ignoring the problem and will not stand behind this new imac, anyone else having the same problem. I talked to a repair guy who said you can expect problems from an Imac because all of its parts are cheap made in china, he has encountered a lot of issues with the new Imacs. I wouldnt recommend anyone to buy one at this time, stick with a PC because in my opinion if you buy an imac, your buying trouble.

What repair guy did you talk to? Because that doesn't sound like a response from a qualified Apple Service Technician. Plus if it was, then there are ways to deal with them as well as your Hardware.

Ranting and ragging here in these Forums will get you no where, except for either edited or maybe even banned.

  • Migration Assistant using firewire not working between new iMac and G5. Ah!

I unpacked my new iMac 21.5' last nite and spent three painful hours trying to use Migration Assistant to tranfer files from my old iMac G5, which is using OS X 10.4.11.
I follow all of the instructions ver batim: connect the 400/800 firewire between the old and the new iMacs, start migration assistant on the new iMac, reboot the old iMac holding down the 'T' key until the firewire symbol pops up on the screen. At that point, the new iMac sits there with the message 'waiting for the other iMac to restart.' It never seems to recognize the old iMac. I tried rebooting, reconnecting the cable, etc. No luck.
I also tried using the ethernet option with no luck. The computers find each other but after entering the 'code' twice, the old mac gets stuck 'searching for other computers on the network.'
Any advice? I'd really like to use my new iMac!!!!

May not help but give this a try on the G5:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
I would also first turn off both computers then connect the FW cable. If both computers have a FW800 port then you can use a standard FW800 cable. Boot the G5 into TDM. After the TDM screen appears boot the new computer normally.

  • Cd's not working in new imac.

I Have a new imac i5, I have been unable to play cds on it. DVDs do work. the cd's are CD-R and do work on windows 7 and some are form a imac, most of the cd's have Photo's on them. here is what i get when putting in a Cd......... There was a problem opening the media. The media type is not supported. when I Restart the imac i get a message that the disk is unreadable even when it has no disk in it. Please Help.

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.
If that deesn't do the trick, contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine. Might also apply to a new machine.

  • Wacom Intuos Tablet and Pen not working on new iMac with OSX 10.9.4

Hi there, I've been using an A3 Wacom Intuos tablet and pen for many years now on a 2006 iMac for my illustration work, but I cannot get them to appear or work on my new iMac with OSX 10.9.4.  I think they are the original Wacom Intuos tablet and pen.  Does anyone know if they are just out of date now and aren't supported on the new OSX 10.9.4?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I need to work and it's frustrating!
    Many thanks,
    Steve

    Barbara B.
I have done as you suggested; I uninstalled PSE 11 and set my wife's account up as admin and reinstalled from there. Still have the same problem with my wife's account, but when I went to mine it is working correctly. Any ideas on why that would be? I'm sure it should work on both accounts. I have 2 accounts on my Mac Mini running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and it works on both.
Thanks for your help; at least it's working on my account so that's a great improvement.
