Ethernet wifi network Problems

Hi,
I'm not really sure where to post this, but a Mac Mini is in the middle of it, so here goes.....
My setup Wireless:
MacBook Air 2012 running 10.8.4, MacBook Pro 2010 running 10.6.8
Upstairs room for phone socket
had a TP Link Router supposedly 300MB/s model Router On the MBA it only showed as 150MB/s link.
Have now changed to Sky router, disabled WiFi on the Sky router, and have an Airport Express running from it, via a Devolo 85Mbps Powerline.
My office
Mac Mini 2.3GHz i5 8GB Ram as main work machine running 10.7.5 wired into the switch below:
I have a Synology DS212J wired into an unmanaged Gigabit switch Switch, as well as
LG NAS also plugged into the switch
IP camera also plugged in.
one of the Powerlines via the
I know very little about networks, its a bit of a mystery.
Copying from MBA to Mac Mini is unbelievably bad it shows 3 hours for a 1GB file. Mini to MBA is better, but not much, maybe an hour for the same file. Copying to or from the DS212J can be slow as well.
If I'm copying a file to or from the DS212J and playing a video from it at the same time, the Video will stop. Thats playing the file directly using VLC, not streaming using Plex or anything else.
I've tried using Wireshark, but I might as well be looking up a cow's ***.....
MBA to Mini plugged into office switch 500Mb file 45 seconds latency .40ms Network speed 92.67Mbps
Mini to MBA plugged into office switch 500Mb file 46 seconds latency .87ms Network speed 89.31Mbps
MBA (Wifi) to Mini plugged into office switch 500Mb file takes forever latency 14.07ms Network speed 4.21Mbps
Mini to MBA (Wifi) Mini plugged into office switch 500Mb file takes forever latency 129ms Network speed 3,5 Mbps
Having jigged around the ethernet cables different combinations, there were speeds of 500/600/700mbps between machines wired via the switch.
2.16GB file Mini to DS212J NAS both wired 4min 4sec. Wireless - over an hour......
2.16GB file Mini to LG NAS both wired 2min 10sec.
Running Speedy net at the moment, I put the two MacBooks, Pro and Air running Speedy Net sending files to each other and they were tranferring on WiFi on 40ishMbps, which seems reasonable. They transfer files at this speed, but once I try to send to the mac Mini on the wired network its down to 2mbps.
I tried to send the same 1.6Gb file from Air to Pro and vice-versa and it takes 3/4 minutes.
I try to send the same file to the Mac Mini or the NAS and it is showing over an hour.......
Both switches show green lights on all connections, so no 10/100MBs devices.
I have turned everything to IPv6 to off or local link and that seems to have improved the wifi copying, but there is a serious block when trying to send anything from the Macbooks into the wired network.
What am I missing?

MBA (Wifi) to Mini plugged into office switch 500Mb file takes forever latency 14.07ms Network speed 4.21Mbps
Mini to MBA (Wifi) Mini plugged into office switch 500Mb file takes forever latency 129ms Network speed 3,5 Mbps
Hi Wayne, from the above it almost seems like it's copying through the Internet instead of locally, what are the invilved IPs?

  • Windows Vista and WiFi networking problem with MackBook Air

    Hi, everyone!
Thanks in advance for the following help.
For some specific programms I need Windows Vista to be set up on my MacBook Air.
The problem with Broadcom WiFi adapter.
While moving large files over home network it hangs and looses the wifi network. It works OK while surfing the internet or doing other low traffic job. But when it comes to 2 MB/sec transfer it doesn't work. I tried two different routers, no positive result. PC works propely on any file sizes. After booting the Leopard the problem goes away. So it is onle Windows Vista problem.
May be drivers? I tried 4.170.25.19 Windows Vista drivers from Broadcom - it didn't help. But I am not goog in driver settings in Control Panel, so may be the solution is there.
Any ideas how to solve it?
    Thanks for help in advance.
    Andrey.

Hello Nescom. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I'm afraid I really don't have an answer for you but I can offer my experiences with large files transfer with Vista. My current home network is a combination of Windows PC, Windows Servers, and Macs. Large file transfers between most of them have relatively the same performance, except when transferring large files from the Vista PC to any other OS. It is demonstrably slower. Interestingly, transfers between Vista machines does not appear to be a problem. I understand that this is a known problem by Microsoft and was supposed to be fixed with Vista SP1.
So the problem might not be your network, but Vista itself. I'm curious if you have this problem when transferring large files to another Vista device?

  • G585 wired and wifi networking problems - please help!!

Just purchased a new G585 a couple weeks ago.  After trying Win 8, I realized what a complete POS of an OS it is and installed Win 7.
    2 Major problems:
    1.  Ethernet connection erratically disconnects - no rhyme or reason - sometimes works other times doesn't.  I've tested on two diff networks - the same behavior.
    2.  Cannot install wifi - tried the drivers from Lenovo site - no go - tried drivers someone had recommended (broadcom wifi5.100.196.18) these did not work either - device still unrecognized in device manager
This is my 9th Lenovo laptop over the years.  The others were great.  This one seems to have serious issues.
    Can anyone assist please???

I have had these same connectivity issue since I bought the laptop in March of 2013.  It is January 2014, and is will still drop connectivity for no apparent reason, be incredibly slow when it IS connected, and sometimes just sop seeing the network altogether (and this happens on every netwrok I have attempted to connect to).
The most obnoxious thing is that after spending several hours over multiple days on the phone with tech supprt, they said I needed to send it in for repair.  So I did.  It was gone two weeks and when I got ti back, they claimed that had repaired it, but everything was exactly the same.
Combine that with the lack of help for the company and the fact that this seems to be the only laptop where edge swipes on the touchpad cannot be disabled, this Lenovo laptop is the worst computer I have ever owned, period.  And I mean ever.
If there ACTUALLY IS a way to fix this issue, I would love to hear it, bit nothing that anywone ever suggest actually works.  I thought maybe if I upgraded to Windows 8.1 it would help, but the Lenovo site lists the G585 as a model you shouldn't update because of monitor driver issues witht he upgrade.  It really looks to me like Lenovo has written this model off completely.
I will never buy another Lenovo product and I will direct other people to other brands.  Words cannot describe my frustration and disappointment.

  • (Ethernet -- WiFi -- Printer) Problem, routing or bridging fails.

Hello. I have 2 computers and a printer.
computer[192.168.100.2] is running MacOSX and has an ethernet card
computer[192.168.100.3] is running ArchLinux 2.6.31 and has 2 interfaces: eth0 - ethernet and wlan0 is wireless (Marvell 99w9335 Libertas, uses ndiswrapper)
printer[192.168.100.17] is running an unknown OS and links via wifi
adsl router[192.168.100.1] has 4 ethernet ports, it acts here like a switch
I need to print from the computer[192.168.100.2]:
    computer[100.2]{en0}  <--adsl router-->  {eth0}computer[100.3]{wlan0}  <-->  {wifi}printer[100.17]
    I tried two methods:
    1)routing
    2)bridging
    1)
    modprobe ndiswrapper
    iwconfig wlan0 mode Ad-Hoc essid "my_adhoc" channel 6
    ifconfig wlan0 192.168.100.3 up
    route add 192.168.100.17 wlan0
    iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o wlan0 -j MASQUERADE
    echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
    /etc/rc.d/iptables save
    /etc/rc.d/iptables start
After adding a route to 192.168.100.17 in MacOSX I can ping the printer and access printer's web site.
But I can't print, probably because it uses some specific tcp ports (9100,9101,9102,9110,9220) and may be udp ports, which I can't access.
May be I need something like: iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT
    2)
    modprobe ndiswrapper
    iwconfig wlan0 mode Ad-Hoc essid "my_adhoc" channel 6
    ifconfig wlan0 192.168.100.3 up
    brctl addbr mybridge
    brctl addif mybridge eth0
    brctl addif mybridge wlan0
    ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0 promisc up
    ifconfig wlan0 0.0.0.0 promisc up
    ifconfig mybridge 192.168.100.3 up
This variant looks more friendly and simple, but I can't here ping the printer from computer[100.2]. I noticed that when I try to ping from computer[100.2], printer receives the packets, but nothing returns to the sender.

    Thank you for replies.
    In routed mode:
Setting wlan0 to other ip address(even in the same subnet) and adding "iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT" plus reinstalling the printer in CUPS solved the problem in routed mode.
    In bridge mode:
It is impossible to check whether the printer can ping hosts on my ethernet segment, because I don't know how to access it's OS (telnet and ssh don't work). The web site does not provide ping utility, just stats about packets transfers and wireless interface configuration. nmap shows:

    9100/tcp open jetdirect

  • Two WiFi/Networking problems with a T43

Hi.  I had a T43 for a few years and loved it but in Sept, it just died.  wouldnt turn on.  Took out the hard drive.
Just got another T43 (actually 2) and swapped in my HDD.  both had the same problem and I cannot find a fix on the website...
Everything works well on them with my HDD.  I have been running programs, etc. and also am on Internet thru a wire, but it has 2 problems..
    1.  It doesnt show that there is a wifi card (same with the other 'new' one that someone else took and installed their OS on the HDD (XP Pro) and found the wifi card.    Nothing shows up in device manager under network cards except the gigabit card and the bluetooth (both work) but NO Wifi.  Belarc Advisor doesnt show a WIFI card, My guess is that there is one there but something isnt allowing me to see it.
    2.  In Device Manager, there is one item that has the yellow question mark, it is the "Network Controller"  I went to the Lenovo website and also googled it, and cant find a driver for any such device.  I am wondering if it has to do with why the WiFi doesnt show up.  where can i find the driver and what IS the 'network controller' anyway??
any help would be appreciated.  I love the T43 and need it to get working fully asap.
    THANKS

    That's weird...
Just in case that someone had swapped the card in the past, try this:

  • HP Officejet 4500 Ethernet / Wifi Driver Problem (blank fields) with Office 2013

    Hi,
I have an Officejet 4500 (Ethernet) and I have exactly the same problem as lots and lots of HP Printer owners!
Everytime I try to print on Office 2013 + Win 8 64-bit, the Printer window comes with strange "Asiatic" symbols, and not the original language (Portuguese or English, I tried both). (Note: my father has exactly the same printer I have and he already had some problems also on Win 7 + Office 2010, then I deleted all HP drivers, installed again and it solved the problem)
I already tried the menus you people talk about but in my model I do not have such options. I already installed everything again and again...and always the same problem! With another printer from another company I have no problems with the drivers on Office, so it must be from HP Drivers that do not get along with Office 2013!!! Please update them as soon as possible...

  • IPhone wifi-network problem- Please Help!

I have a problem with my iPhone4. It could only connect to the internet for a couple of minute then it dropped off. But it is still connect to the wifi though and in my Mac the wifi seem to be working fine. Any ideas?

    first start here
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/wifi/
    If that doesn't help then
Restore as new, if wifi  works add your backup and proceed .If after backup issue returns
Then you have a corrupt backup
If when restored as new no wifi then you probably have hardware issue and should take it to an Apple Store genius bar

  • Wifi Network Problems CoreDuo iMac 20"

Just upgraded to 10.5 and now my iMac will not recognize my wireless network. In fact during a clean install it didn't find my router or access-point. I never had this problem before I upgraded.
The only way I can get it to work is going into the "assist me" option in the network settings and it then works. But after a reboot I loose the connection again. I don't mind the work around at the moment, but it now means that my dad cant use the computer unless I sort the connection out each time. Very disappointed with 10.5 at the moment....
Does anyone know if this is a bug??

    Howard,
What was the solution to your problem?
    Thanks,

Try restarting your router by removing power for 30 seconds. Next, reset network settings on your iPad (Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings) and then attempt to connect.
Do you have any other devices working on your network?
Do you have a backup from previously synching with iTunes? If so you can restore you music and Apps from it.
Apps can also be loaded into iTunes on your PC and synched to your iPod.

Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Problem viewing streaming video in some wifi networks, but not others

When I am at work (university), I can not view YouTube videos or video streaming from news sites such as cnn mobile on my ipod touch 2g.
    <m.cnn.com/videos.jsp?ckey-cnn)06#__1_>
When I called Apple support, they had me reset-restore. I still had the problem. I went to the Apple store Genius bar and the problem no longer existed, the videaos downloaded and played from both sites!
But at my diner and at work, I get the message, "This movie could not be played" in a popup box with an OK button. The same message appears if I use the YouTube application. I click on any video, and the same popup appears. In Cnn the popup is preceded by a shaded capital Q that looks like the blue Quicktime Q; in Youtube the pupup is preceded by a YouTube icon in gray with the "Tube" surrounded by the rounded rectangle, their icoon...
At the Apple store the popup never appeared, and the videos downloaded and played.
I have no trouble playing movies I have downloaded from iTunes.
I did not have this problem when I initially got my iPod Touch, and I think it appeared after one of the last two system upgrades, but I am not sure.
I am curious that it the problem happens at two places, my diner and at work.
The speed of my wireless work network, as judged by the ipod app speed test is 9915 kbps download and 6971 kbps upload, so plenty fast.
The first time I noticed this issue was with the application "At Bat Lite" which also won't play video highlights at work.
I do not have WiFi at home
Any thoughts about what would cause this lack of functionality apparantly only at some networks but not others?
Oh, one more piece of data: at work a Macbook will play YouTube both on ethernet and using wifi...
Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions,
    Paul

It seems I have two networks available at work, one is behind our firewall, and I login to it. This is the network that I can't view streaming video. There is also a "Guest" network that I don't need to login to. This one works with the YouTube and the news site videos.
Thus, I conclude there is a setting that WiFi network administrators can invoke that specifically can block streaming video on some protocols (whatever the ipod touch uses) and not others (whatever the Macbook uses). But the same router hardware supplying the Guest network does not block these protocols. Presumably this has to do with security on one side of the firewall(?)
Anyway, apparently outside of the WiFi controls available in the ipod touch settings.
    Weird...

  • WiFi and other networking problems (MacBook Air)

Like many others on these forums, I’m having terrible problems with network connections on my MacBook Air 11-inch (Mid 2011, running Lion 10.7.3).
WiFi connections are very unreliable, and often impossible to establish.
On my home network I can ‘force’ the MBAir to connect by manually configuring TCP/IP, and DNS settings. I shouldn’t have to do this.
I do not have (and have never had) problems establishing WiFi connections on all the other Macs that are used on our home network (iMac, and MacBook running SnowLeopard, and an old PowerMac that runs Tiger; I also occasionally use my University MacBookPro (10.6.7) without any problems. So this issue is clearly not network related.
If I take the MBAir out on the road (which is why I bought it) then I invariably struggle and usually fail to establish a WiFi connection, even in my University, where the WiFi network functions with my MacBookPro.
My problems with the MBAir are not however confined to WiFi.
Networking with an Ethernet-USB link is equally unreliable. Occasionally the MBAir appears on network but then fails to connect to any servers. Even when it does appear to connect the network, I’m unable to connect/share the MBAir from any other of my Macs. Ethernet cable and network communications are all trouble-free with my University iMac and MacBookPro.
I’m really disappointed with my MacBook Air what’s going on Apple?!
I’ve tried deleting the usual system preference files (com.apple.airport.- , -.network, etc.) but not much has changed. Now at a loss at what to try next .... advice welcomed.

Whatever was causing my endless problems has been resolved. I was very close to returning my new MacBookAir, as nothing would work with respect to networking; WiFi or Ethernet-USB.
As a last resort I reinstalled Lion using the cmd-R - and yipee all networking problems have disappeared.
The MBAir now works just fine, I can chop and change WiFi connections when roaming without problems, and my ethernet-USB connection allows me to interact with my University network.
    My solution - reinstall Lion!

  • Ethernet Network Problem

    Hi guys,
I usually post my questions under the iMac and MacBook Pro section but this time I'm posting for a friend who has a network problem, hence he could not post it himself so I'm posting it for him until the problem is solved.
He has a PowerMac G5 and a PowerBook 17" both hooked on the same network. I will now quote the problem as he wrote it.
I kindly ask for your help to find a solution as the problem occured suddenly for no apparent reason on both computers.
a.) I have an ethernet-connection (LAN) through AUC.
    b.) When I open the web-browser (or email-client), i.e., the Internet,
the website doesn't open and I get a message from "SpeedTouch"
saying that my "DSL-connection is down".
c.) In "System Preferences" and the the "Network" Symbol,
the settings are on "Built-in Ethernet" and "Automatic".
Previously the Mac used to search automatically for the necessary info
    and then it would work.
d.) Now, it doesn't. I have to change "Using DHCP" to "Using DHCP with
    Manual Address",
press "Apply", and then change back to "Using DHC", and press 'Apply"
    again.
e.) Then the Network-Connection works, but only as long as the
    computer is on.
f.) When I switch the computer off, and then start it again, I'm back to
zero. I have the problem again and have to go the same moves to fix
    it.
By the way: the same problem occurs with my wife's Mac. It didn't
occur there before. Both computer are hooked up to an Ethernet-
    switch.
Ok, so there it goes. I hope anyone has any clue. His OS is 10.4.6 on both computers.
Thank you for your help in advance...

    iMac G5 17" 1.9Ghz, 512 RAM, 160GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   MacBook Pro 15" 2.16GHz, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD

My guess is that the switch was added to allow a single network interface to connect to multiple computers.
Make sure the network interface (sounds like DSL) or the router is set to enable NAT (Network Address Translation). May also be called "distribute IP addresses" or some such clever alternate name.
If the router is not set to support NAT it may see the MAC address of the switch and provide an IP address to it only. Or it provides one only to the first device to ask for one. By manually enabling an address, you are working around it.
