(Ethernet -- WiFi -- Printer) Problem, routing or bridging fails.

Hello. I have 2 computers and a printer.
computer[192.168.100.2] is running MacOSX and has an ethernet card
computer[192.168.100.3] is running ArchLinux 2.6.31 and has 2 interfaces: eth0 - ethernet and wlan0 is wireless (Marvell 99w9335 Libertas, uses ndiswrapper)
printer[192.168.100.17] is running an unknown OS and links via wifi
adsl router[192.168.100.1] has 4 ethernet ports, it acts here like a switch
I need to print from the computer[192.168.100.2]:
computer[100.2]{en0} <--adsl router--> {eth0}computer[100.3]{wlan0} <--> {wifi}printer[100.17]
I tried two methods:
1)routing
2)bridging
1)
modprobe ndiswrapper
iwconfig wlan0 mode Ad-Hoc essid "my_adhoc" channel 6
ifconfig wlan0 192.168.100.3 up
route add 192.168.100.17 wlan0
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o wlan0 -j MASQUERADE
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
/etc/rc.d/iptables save
/etc/rc.d/iptables start
After adding a route to 192.168.100.17 in MacOSX I can ping the printer and access printer's web site.
But I can't print, probably because it uses some specific tcp ports (9100,9101,9102,9110,9220) and may be udp ports, which I can't access.
May be I need something like: iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT
2)
modprobe ndiswrapper
iwconfig wlan0 mode Ad-Hoc essid "my_adhoc" channel 6
ifconfig wlan0 192.168.100.3 up
brctl addbr mybridge
brctl addif mybridge eth0
brctl addif mybridge wlan0
ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0 promisc up
ifconfig wlan0 0.0.0.0 promisc up
ifconfig mybridge 192.168.100.3 up
This variant looks more friendly and simple, but I can't here ping the printer from computer[100.2]. I noticed that when I try to ping from computer[100.2], printer receives the packets, but nothing returns to the sender.

Thank you for replies.
In routed mode:
Setting wlan0 to other ip address(even in the same subnet) and adding "iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT" plus reinstalling the printer in CUPS solved the problem in routed mode.
In bridge mode:
It is impossible to check whether the printer can ping hosts on my ethernet segment, because I don't know how to access it's OS (telnet and ssh don't work). The web site does not provide ping utility, just stats about packets transfers and wireless interface configuration. nmap shows:

• Ethernet network printing problems

I have a HP deskjet 5650 connected to a flat-panel iMac in one room and a new G5 iMac in another room. Both computers are hooked into a Linksys cable modem router through ethernet. Printer sharing is enabled on the flat panel. The G5 apparently "sees" the printer because it appears in the printer setup utility as a shared printer, but when I try and print from the G5 I get an error message after I see a brief processing window. I already tried resetting the printer setup utility.
The printer works fine from the flat panel and if I disconnect it and hook it up to the G5 it prints fine also. So it must be a network issue. Any thoughts?

Okay rather than use shared printing, you may want to try IP printing instead.
Look at this guide on the information you will need from the Mac hosting the printer.
http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3000.html
Then on the other Mac:
On the Mac double click Printer Setup Utility in the Utilities folder in Applications.
You will now be faced with a new window.
Hold down the Option key and click More Printers.
Where you click the drop down box to see Windows Printing, IP Printing, etc... you should now see an entry called Advanced.
Click Advanced you should now see a new dialogue
From the drop down box change the Device: to Internet Printing Protocol using http
Device Name: <the share name of your shared printer> which you will get from the Hosting Mac.
Device URI: http://<IP address of Mac>:631/printers/Queue Name
Therefore if your IP address is 10.0.1.5 and the queue name is HP_DeskJet
http://10.0.1.5:631/printers/HP_DeskJet
Printer Model: the relevant driver or relevant HPIJS or Gimp-Print driver
You may need to use a third-party driver such as the HPIJS drivers or the Gimp-Print drivers, but this is not the case with all printers.
Click Add.

• Lexmark Pro205 WiFi Printing Problems

Hello,
I have a Prospect Pro 205. WiFi printing works fine from my Windows Vista PC, but continually gives me problems on my MacBook Pro with the latest OSX.
It sometimes prints fine but other times I get the following message: "A component required for printing is missing. The printer is not connected".
I used to get a message about a "broken pipe", but since I recently reinstalled the Lexmark application, I get the other message".
I've updated the printer firmware...
This has been a continuous problem for over a year. Can you help?
Thanks,

• HP Officejet 4500 Ethernet / Wifi Driver Problem (blank fields) with Office 2013

Hi,
I have an Officejet 4500 (Ethernet) and I have exactly the same problem as lots and lots of HP Printer owners!
Everytime I try to print on Office 2013 + Win 8 64-bit, the Printer window comes with strange "Asiatic" symbols, and not the original language (Portuguese or English, I tried both). (Note: my father has exactly the same printer I have and he already had some problems also on Win 7 + Office 2010, then I deleted all HP drivers, installed again and it solved the problem)
I already tried the menus you people talk about but in my model I do not have such options. I already installed everything again and again...and always the same problem! With another printer from another company I have no problems with the drivers on Office, so it must be from HP Drivers that do not get along with Office 2013!!! Please update them as soon as possible...

• Ethernet wifi network Problems

Hi,
I'm not really sure where to post this, but a Mac Mini is in the middle of it, so here goes.....
My setup Wireless:
MacBook Air 2012 running 10.8.4, MacBook Pro 2010 running 10.6.8
Upstairs room for phone socket
had a TP Link Router supposedly 300MB/s model Router On the MBA it only showed as 150MB/s link.
Have now changed to Sky router, disabled WiFi on the Sky router, and have an Airport Express running from it, via a Devolo 85Mbps Powerline.
My office
Mac Mini 2.3GHz i5 8GB Ram as main work machine running 10.7.5 wired into the switch below:
I have a Synology DS212J wired into an unmanaged Gigabit switch Switch, as well as
LG NAS also plugged into the switch
IP camera also plugged in.
one of the Powerlines via the
I know very little about networks, its a bit of a mystery.
Copying from MBA to Mac Mini is unbelievably bad it shows 3 hours for a 1GB file. Mini to MBA is better, but not much, maybe an hour for the same file. Copying to or from the DS212J can be slow as well.
If I'm copying a file to or from the DS212J and playing a video from it at the same time, the Video will stop. Thats playing the file directly using VLC, not streaming using Plex or anything else.
I've tried using Wireshark, but I might as well be looking up a cow's ***.....
MBA to Mini plugged into office switch 500Mb file 45 seconds latency .40ms Network speed 92.67Mbps
Mini to MBA plugged into office switch 500Mb file 46 seconds latency .87ms Network speed 89.31Mbps
MBA (Wifi) to Mini plugged into office switch 500Mb file takes forever latency 14.07ms Network speed 4.21Mbps
Mini to MBA (Wifi) Mini plugged into office switch 500Mb file takes forever latency 129ms Network speed 3,5 Mbps
Having jigged around the ethernet cables different combinations, there were speeds of 500/600/700mbps between machines wired via the switch.
2.16GB file Mini to DS212J NAS both wired 4min 4sec. Wireless - over an hour......
2.16GB file Mini to LG NAS both wired 2min 10sec.
Running Speedy net at the moment, I put the two MacBooks, Pro and Air running Speedy Net sending files to each other and they were tranferring on WiFi on 40ishMbps, which seems reasonable. They transfer files at this speed, but once I try to send to the mac Mini on the wired network its down to 2mbps.
I tried to send the same 1.6Gb file from Air to Pro and vice-versa and it takes 3/4 minutes.
I try to send the same file to the Mac Mini or the NAS and it is showing over an hour.......
Both switches show green lights on all connections, so no 10/100MBs devices.
I have turned everything to IPv6 to off or local link and that seems to have improved the wifi copying, but there is a serious block when trying to send anything from the Macbooks into the wired network.
What am I missing?

MBA (Wifi) to Mini plugged into office switch 500Mb file takes forever latency 14.07ms Network speed 4.21Mbps
Mini to MBA (Wifi) Mini plugged into office switch 500Mb file takes forever latency 129ms Network speed 3,5 Mbps
Hi Wayne, from the above it almost seems like it's copying through the Internet instead of locally, what are the invilved IPs?

• Wifi printing on canon Mx455 suddenly fails.

in november 2013 we bought a canon mx455 printer and installed it without difficulty, connecting it to our broadband network using the wireless LAN setup feature on the device itself. At the same time I also loaded the files from the CD provided on to my Windows laptop. For most of 2014 we were able to print by wifi from either of our tablets ( an ipad and a Sony Xperia android) and also the laptop. Then the error message 'no airprinter found' came up when we tried to print, and the connection was lost despite all the devices being on the same SSID. I reset the printer and the configuration page printed identical data to that upon the original setup with a signal strength of 64%. The printer is within 10 metres of the BT wireless hub. There are no error messages on the printer display although there was a 'low ink' warning about the time the link failed. I have been through troubleshooting without success and am now only able to print using a USB cable to the laptop. All the devices are showing as being on the same SSID, so why can't they 'see' the printer?

• Samsung LED smart TV WiFi connection problems (router MI424WR)

I am able to connect my Samsung C9000 55" LED smart TV to my home internet router (MI424WR) and am able to use the apps on the TV. Then, out of nowhere the connection is lost. The router is on the second floor of my home, and the TV is located in my basement, hanging on a wall. The signal strength on the TV only shows 2 bars (out of 5), yet the playstation 3 that is also hooked up to that TV has 100% signal strength. I've tried resetting the TV to factory default settings and started over. Same thing happened. Is a "booster" of some kind needed, even though the playstation gets 100% wireless connection? Very confused and frustrated. I would greatly appreciate advice. Thank you!

Well it is obvious that the Playstation has better receive capabilities than the Samsung. A possible cheap & easy solution might be replacing the antenna on the MI-424WR (it has a replaceable antenna). You could pick up a high-gain antenna with greater range at Radio Shack which might add just enough to solve your TV reception problem.

• Samsung WiFi printer can't connect to new Quantum Gateway router?!

We recently replaced our 3-year-old router with the latest Quantum Gateway router and upgraded fios speed from 25/25 to 50/50.
Every device (PC, phones, tablets, and TV) was able to connect to the new network. BUT, our Samsung Wifi printer (M283x seriers) cannot connect at all. With the older router, we were able to access the printer thru Wifi network from two different PCs..
We did not relocate the router and we did not move the printer, so singal strength was not the issue. We even uninstalled and then re-install printer driver to PC to set up the network again. Tried every connecting option that Samsung had suggested, but everything failed.
We also tried to log in to Router Admin site to add this printer, didn't work. WPS was turned on and we couldn't figure out why this new network doesn't add the printer. This router did not like our printer.
One funny thing was that if we turned OFF all the security settings, the router allowed this device to connect to WiFi.
Can anyone help? Thanks a lot!
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I have a solution for you. After upgrading to the Quantum Gateway last week, My Samsung 2835 printer had the same problem. It turns out that the printer doesn't play well with the Quantum Gateway when the Samsung "Wi-Fi Direct" function is enabled. All you have to do is log in to the printer web page. Then, under Settings--> Network Settings--> Wi-Fi Direct... Turn Wi-Fi Direct off using the drop down menu. Hit "Apply", then power cycle the printer. After this you can use WPS or manually configure the printer and it will connect right away. Thank the Verizon technical guy J.W. for figuring this one out by capturing the Wi-Fi traffic between the Gateway and printer.

• Problems setting up WIFI printing on Mavericks HPDeskjet3050A

I have an HP Deskjet 3050A J611n I can get it to print via USB but wifi is problematic I have had it working a couple of time but wehen I try to reuse it at a later time printer can not be found I am creating my wifi through ethernet to my Time Capsule . I have removed and inserted the printer several times through system prefs the original settings that worked are on my iMac which is currenty been repaired (Graphics issues); so I am using a white macbook I have managed to print off on wifi once I think with this plus do I need to be connected to the HP set up on the wifi all the time to print since this then means I am not connected wirelessly to my normal network? I have been confused by the whole issue is there an easy way to set this up? What information do I need to give it to make it work including airprint? I am so tempted to just run it through the USB port on the time capsule but this is not really how it should function been a wifi printer ! I assume it needs no usb connection to be wirless .
Does anyone have experience with this printer & Mavericks I have my MAC Hardware address my IP Address .I do not know what the network name SSID is or is that simple the name of my network that Time capsule is running?
I have printed off the Printer status report , Wirless Network Test Results what am I missing .
I have tried to seek out the problem in airport utility but I dont think this is it .I have tried adding printers multiple time throus system prefs & HP utility I am chasing my tail here.

Also check whether your wireless router has some security keys like WEP or WPA-PSK, then set that too in your system....

• Can i use express for wifi and my router for ethernet or do i need the extreme ?

Hi there . I'm interested in being able use the dual band feature of the new Airport products for better coverage on my iphone 5 . I have a wireless router with known conflicts with the iphone 5 . As I have never had any airport products I'm not exactly sure how they work . I understand that they don't have connection to internet , so I will have to continue to use my router actual . Currently I use the four ethernet sockets on my router , so my question is can I disconnect the wifi on my router connect the Express by cable and use it's outport to connect to what was originally connected to my router , continue using my router for the other ethernet connections and use the Express for my wifi connections ??
Thanks for any help & advice .

You must have an Internet connection to use an AEX as you've described. So you need to connect it to an Ethernet port on your router. Since you are using all the ports on the router what you need to do is get a multi-port switch. The switch connects to a LAN port on your router. It then provides you with 3, 4, or 5 additional ports (depends on the switch capabilities.) You would connect the device you disconnected from your router to a port on the switch. Then connect the AEX to one of the free LAN ports on the switch. In this way the AEX can Join your existing network (also known as Bridge Mode.) You now have an additional wireless router. For this to work as you want you must disable the wireless radio in your non-Apple router.

• Would like to print from laptop to printer at home. Printer is ethernet connected to NetGear Router

Would like to print from laptop to printer at home. Printer is ethernet connected to NetGear Router.
I had been able to print wirelessly from laptop to HP 7310 Officejet all-in-one, but now all I get is "document failed to print" message. I can get documents to print on this printer using my smart phone, but not the laptop.
I have used "find printer" button on print screen and can see the printer to select.
Any suggestions?
This question was solved.

• Problem in connecting wifi printer HP 3545

I have a Macbook Air released 2014, with 10.9 OS. I tried to connect HP Wireless printer, HP 3545. The software is installed, the printer can connect through USB, and print once with wifi. After one printing it refuse to connnect to printer.through wifi.
This has been repeated about four times. Today I installed again after receiving update on the software for the printer. The same happens again.
However, the printer is connecting to the wifi and is able to print through HP laptop.
The printer is enabled for air print, but iphone cannot detect Air pinter, when searched. Iphone can print is it is connected to the direct wireless printing. I feel the issue is mainly on the network with apple product. Non Apple can smothly print through wifi.

I just wanted to leave a note that it's working now. I'm not sure if it was the latest iTunes update that got it working or that i decided to start a new library instead of using the one i had backed up on Windows 8 (it didn't occur to me to check using the old library when i re-installed iTunes). But if anyone is having this problem, it might be worth trying again with a new installation of iTunes to see if the latest update works for you, and if not, try using a fresh library instead of a backup (by fresh library i mean discard your old library completely and start a new library, not just restore as new iPhone, a whole new library).
