Ever Changing Goalposts

[Whinge Mode On]
So, bit of background. I live almost exactly 9kms between 2 exchanges so have always struggled with the bandwidth of my ADSL connection.  Maximum ever achieved was 1.6 mb down and 0.448 mb up.  I moved 200 ms from one house to another and hey presto the connection changed to 0.8mb down and fluctuating 0.35-0.448 mb up.  Much dialogue with India identified a fault on the line.  2 Engineer visits and 8 weeks later and numerous phone calls and the line speed dropped to 0.15 - 0.3 mb down and 0.448 mb up !.  Internet kept dropping out and was next to useless when actually stable.
I started to use a 3G wireless dongle which gave me a 2.5mb down and 1 mb up.  I rang BT to cancel my internet as i accepted they could not improve it.
Concurrently, i received an email from BT informing me that there was work being carried out on the line form the exchange to the sub-station.  Ooooh - so i checked and saw that Infinity was forecast for my area.
So, i rang BT to inquire - during the telecon the sales person could not provide any details but noted my concern at the connection issues I was getting - I explained that i was considering binning the BT line and reverting to Mobile phone only and Internet through 3G dongle.  I was put in contact with India yet again, but this time i was 'escalated' and spoke to someone who had more information.  They were able to see that the Main exchange was being upgraded to Infinity and that I would be able to get it from September.  They also did a further line check and confirmed there was still a fault on the line - a further engineer visit was arranged and funny old thing, he fixed the issue at the sub-stn.  I saw an immediate increase to 1.6mb down and 0.448 up (this has remained the figures for the last 3 months with no drop outs or issues).
I went on holiday in August and returned on 2 September whereupon I checked the Infinity stuff and was slightly frustrated to see that whilst the exchange had been upgraded the roll out meant that i could not get Infinity until 31 Dec.  Oh well, I bit my tongue and waited with baited breath.
Doing a weekly check I noted that 31 Dec remained the availability date.......... right up until when I checked yesterday.
Seems that its now 31 Mar 12.
Now i know technology is difficult and I know that its a large project to implement this new technology, but for ^*)*_)( sake it is not that difficult to to forecast when and where something is happening with some degree of certainty.  And why if it was forecast for 31 Dec for 3 months did they suddenly realise it was not going to happen 14 days before that deadline? and why does that also necessitate a further 3 month delay.
I know I should be grateful that they are condescending to give me the chance of a half baked connection that may give me a speed which European countries have had for 5 years or more, but its getting ridiculous when the exchange is upgraded and the sub station has as well to be told i will have a 6 month delay from potential available date to the actual uncertain possibility of getting the opportunity of taking up their wonderful offer.
Perhaps if they stopped wasting money on pathetic adverts and actually spent it on implementing the infrastructure and getting engineers to install it then the customer base would be a tad happier.
[/Whinge Mode Off]

I know i am one of many experiencing this sort of annoyance, but having struggled to get an internet connection capable of supporting my usage (online gaming - yes i am sad i know ), 2 teenage daughters who think the world will end if they cannot face *(*))0- immediately and at any time of day and a long suffering wife who only wants to do the banking when she needs to............it is galling to get hope only too have it taken away unceremoniously and without explanation on 3 occasions.
A previous experience of the 'system' was when i had a fult on the line which stopped the miniscule ADSL form working - it was fixed, but someone told BT Wholesale (openreach?) that there was a fualt - they made a judegemnt that my distance form the exchange meant i couldnt have ADSL and put a cease on the line.  Thus, 6 weeks after the fix and with a fully functioning internet connection which (bar the fault period) had worked for 18 months, it was removed.  No amount of cajoling, explanation, ranting would get it turned back on because Wholesale had put a block on the line which said "despite and engineers visit, your line is incapable of ADSL".  After numerous letters and emails i was eventually put in telephone contact with a UK based BT manager who read the file........ funny old thing, within 24 hrs my line was re enabled and i enjoyed a further 3 years of stable but small internet capability.
Essentially, BT Wholesale is not subject to the Monopolies Commission as it is not a customer supplier - it only provides to ISPs of which BT is a true customer and treated no different to to any other ISP.
Thus the sole provider of the critical component of any internet connection - namely, the actual Line that carries it - has no comeback form any organization.  Remarkable in todays so called enlighted and litigious environemnt.
Oh well, guess i am back to trusting the incompetence of the project management to actually give a realistic date as opposed to the illegal mis-advertising approach they are.   Telling people availability is on a certain date which causes them to make financial obligations (eg taking out a BT ISP contract of 12 months or more) and then changing the date is why i call foul on their practice.  In any other walk of life it would be subject to recourse action but because they are as they are, then there is no mechanism for a challenge.
Extremely frustrated and annoyed

  • Ever Changing Metadata Status

I have LR 2 (on a Windows PC) set up to write all changes to XMP. Normally this works very well, but for some pictures the "Metadata Status" message in the Metadata panel constantly changes from "has been changed" to "..." to "Up to date" then back to "Has been changed" again. This happens in Library view when I am not touching the image.
It seems to happen randomly. If I exit LR and then return it has stopped.
The pictures in question seem to be fine, both to examine in LR, edit and also export.
Is this a known problem? Should I be concerned? It seems like a disk write to the image file or a data update to the catalog must be failing. But I have checked my hard drive and it seems healthy.
I wrote about this on my blog and even made an animated GIF http://bkkphotographer.wordpress.com/2009/09/17/the-case-of-the-ever-changing-status/

I’ve been playing with metadata and sidecar XMP files in order to try and learn the way Lr handles them. I’ve also read quite a bit about this subject and now I believe I understand the significance of these XMP files as an insurance in case anything goes wrong with the database, despite the fact that some relevant data is not included in the XMP file and would be lost in case of catalog (database) corruption.
So, I've done a very simple test:
    - created a new catalog;
    - imported 10 CR2 RAW files;
    - immediately after importing they all displayed (quite obviously) a “Metadata Status: Up to date”;
    - applied daylight as white balance to all of them in Quick Develop (“Metadata Status: Has been changed”); option to “automatically write changes to XMP” was off;
    - saved the metadata to XMP sidecar files (“Metadata Status: Up to date”);
    - closed Lr;
    - deleted de XMP files.
When I reopened this catalog, Lr shows the Metadata Status as “Up to date”, even though the XMP files are gone. It’s quite understandable that Lr has no way of knowing that the XMP files no longer exist since they were deleted outside of Lr. But if one tries to recreate the XMP files by saving them again Lr shows briefly a message that it is writing the files but none are actually created. Interesting enough I never get the “sidecar file missing” warning.
I’ve found just two ways of recreating these XMP files after deleting them: either creating empty files with the appropriate names matching the CR2 files or changing some metadata (e.g. adding a caption or title to all photos) before saving the metadata.
OK, some might be asking why deleting the XMP files in the first place? Well, files do get deleted by accident sometimes and could also be lost due to file corruption.
What I would like to understand is if one has a catalog that doesn't use XMP sidecars and at some point they are created (by choice or mistake), is there a way of reverting back and not using them?
Am I missing something or Lr is a little bit weak in handling these XMP sidecar files?
Also, has anyone reproduced this on Lr 3 beta?
    Any comments will be appreciated.

  • Has anyone ever changed an apple id on the iphone

my wife and i have been sharing an apple id and i now want to provide her with her own.  since the icloud has been launched any app she downloads i get and vice versa.  Has anyone ever switched out an applie id on the iphone before.  does it have to be synced with itunes once to make the change happen?  If so will i still be able to keep all of the contents ih her phone.

You can share iTunes content within the same household, so if you get your own Apple ID/iTunes account, you can continue to use content obtained using your Wife's account. Any app updates to apps obtained using the wife's Id must be done using that ID. Just authorize the computer for the new Apple ID/iTunes account: Store>Authorize this Computer. You can switch iTunes accounts on the phone by going to: Settings>Store...tap the ID shown...sign out...sign back in with the ID you want to use.

  • Does it ever change.?

I have been a member of these forums ever since I had infinity installed in the middle of last year, and what amazes me is that it never changes here.
Every day thier are posts from customers who have the same problems as hundreds of in the past.
The problems are always the same, and some of them have actually been solved, but the same endless repeat of those problems never ends.
I think it is about time that everyone stopped taking the excuses of the ISP,and insisted that the company get of of thier xxxx`s and give customers what they pay for.
Being told to disconnect/re-connect/reset etc is ok for those that just use the internet to browse, but what about the users who need a 24/7 connection for servers etc.?
BT should get into the 21st century.
    Rant over.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

That's his point bullet, repeated line faults over the years that they could have easily found a permnant solution by now. Yes, your connection may work fine but you're one of the lucky few. Hella I was stuck on 1mbps profile for over 2 years when I could be getting 2.6mbps, does BTs system not recognise this fault? No, there are a lot flaws within BT, they didn't even contact us to tell us we should be recieving a better speed at any point. You think increasing a customers speed would be good and you would want to show the work you've done for the client but apparently not and due to this we were on a 1mbps connection because the profile was stuck for over 2 years. Then I finally had enough of the terrible connection and complained, it makes you think of how many other people are paying ridiculous prices and have faults they don't even know about. I would love to see a company offer a nice range Broadband package rather than just Upto 24(ADSL2+) with unlimited usage. I could only recieve 1mbps and would still easyily use over 40GB per month so i had to opt in for BT Total Broadband 3, which is completely useless. They should offer more variety to the user, yes this may reduce the amount of profit in the first year but if you give this to the customers to control a lot of more will be signing up to BT meaning bigger long time profits for the company.
Then when finally upgrading contineuous disconnections through the day, we're talking 5 - 10 per an hour. Especially when the problem is their end, the DLM is misinformed and lowers it instantly over 1 disconnect which is stupid but takes weeks if not months to increase. I've never seen it increase or know anyone that does!

  • How do I stop iCal from ever changing the time zones of my appointments?

I cannot figure out time zone support in iCal, and just want it never to move the time of an appointment when I change time zones. I have tried switching time zone support on and off, and it makes no difference, the appointment times change when the time zone changes. It's infuriating! How do I make it stop?
    Thanks!

    Whitecity,
According to iCal Help...Changing the time zone for an event: Choose iCal > Preferences, click Advanced, and select the "Turn on time zone support" checkbox...To change the event's time zone, choose a time zone from the pop-up menu in the Info drawer. To make the event appear at the same time no matter what time zone the main calendar view is in, choose Floating..;~)

  • Never ever ever ever change my appointment times in iCal!

I have read dozens of posts.  I have played with the settings and my behaviour until I am sick.
In >30 years of using both paper and electronic diaries, I HAVE NEVER ONCE SET A TIME FOR ANY OTHER TIME ZONE APART FROM THE RELEVANT ONE FOR MY MEETING!!
I just was late for another meeting having flown in from the UK to Prague.
I am running MacOS 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro
Following recomendations from Apple itself, I turned off the hopelessly muddled and confusing 'Time Zone Support' (which never worked in practice as things that synch or when you add appts in a hurry you never see the dialog to set time zone for the specific event)
1/ The 'automatic time change' did NOT change my time zone.  (and yes, I WAS on the internet)  I had to do this manually
2/ In doing this manual change ONCE AGAIN ALL MY MEETINGS WERE CHANGED BY 1 HOUR!!
Imagine my embarassment when my client shows up 1 hour 'early' literally catching me with my pants down (I was in the toilet) and unprepared. Joked with him that he was quite keen - he takes offense that he was spot on time.
Put in a new option in Preferences: NEVER CHANGE TIME (or word it as "PRESERVE TIMES AS ENTERED")
    Turn it on by default
Just fix this. Obviously the programmers behind this 'feature' (a pain in the backside for many years) never had the real world experience of travelling between time zones.
Just fix this.  I cannot believe that the hundreds of complaints I have read about this asinine feature are groundless.
Just fix this. You have exacerbated the problem a hundred-fold by encouraging us all to use our iCal as the root to which we synch our iPads, iPhones, and 3rd party calendar systems.
    Just fix this.

  • Ever-Changing BT Infinity Roll-Out Dates

Living in Central Reading, we were pleased to see that BT Infinity was planned to be rolled-out to our area on 31st December 2010.  That was before Christmas and then the date changed to 31st March 2011.
I emailed BT and a helpful chap explained that the bad weather meant that repairs to damaged lines had taken priority over the roll-out of new services (fair enough) and that is why Central Reading would not be upgraded until 31st March 2011.
I now see that the date has moved yet again to 30th June 2011.  I wrote another email to BT and received a rather poorly written (grammar and spelling dreadful!) reply, advising that BT Infinity was not available in my area and that my interest had been registered - Absolutely no help at all and clearly my query had not been addressed.
I appreciate that many people are eagerly anticipating BT Infinity and are still further away from getting it according to the roll-out plan today but it is not unreasonable to expect a reply to a simple query and I have no faith in the 30th June 2011 date now...  I am fully expecting it to change in May and move back a further 3 months.
I can't be bothered to try and get another reasonable explanation from BT and have resigned myself to the fact that 40MB downloads here are unlikely....
    Disappointed!

  • Aperture Brushes still slow on maxed out imac i7  will it ever change

Why are brushes still slow  to No Go.   I have an imac 3.4 i7 with 32G ram and 2g video card but still brushes are a major issue and can't be used in any professional manner because of the time involved in waiting and waiting.
Does anyone know what's going on and if it will ever be addressed by apple?
    thanks

    skye27,
there must be a reason for the slowness in your setup.
As long as we do not know more about your versions, the location of the Aperture library, the location of any referenced files, the image file format of your original master images, it is hard to suggest anything.
Slowness can be caused ack of space on your drive, a corruption of your Aperture library, by network access, etc.
Check, if you are having the same problem when using a new Aperture library or working from a different user account.
This will narrow down the problem a bit for easier trouble shooting.

  • Why doesn't my external ip ever change?

I supposedly do not have a static ip, and indeed isp charges for them.  Thank You!
Message Edited by ratchet on 01-10-2009 07:53 AM

In my experience, if you do not explicitly purchase a static IP address, then whether your IP address does change, and when it changes, is up to the ISP.  Regardless of whether your system's current IP address does or doesn't change, there is neither a guarantee that it will remain the same nor a guarantee that it will change.  Usually a "dynamic" IP address will remain assigned for at least 24 consecutive hours.   Beyond that, the IP address might remain the same for a few days, a few weeks or a month or more, and then it might change several times within a relatively short period.
If you actually do want a constantly-changing IP address, then you need to ask your ISP whether they are willing and able to provide that.

  • Has anyone ever changed NIC/MAC address on DBFW

    Hi!
We have database firewall machine in a blade frame that has connections to our network. We would like to move our machine to another bladeframe that has other connections with our network. So MAC address/NIC has been changed.
We have tried change the MAC/NIC on OS level, but after restart all settings has been reseted and the original were used again.
    Please, advice!
    Regards,

Try setting the new MAC address in the NIC_MAPPING part of /usr/local/dbfw/etc/dbfw.conf
    You should then reboot using:
    /usr/local/dbfw/bin/os_manager execute_script reconfig_cw.sh

  • WHY DID I EVER CHANGE TO INFINITY

SINCE WE SWAPPED OUR BT HOMEHUB FOR THE ALL SINGING AND DANCING INFINITY IT HAS BEEN A DISASTER.
UNABLE TO CONNECT AND RANDOM DISCONNECTION, ARE A CONSTANT FRUSTRATION. THE CALL CENTRE ARE EXTREMELY POLITE. BUT SADLY NOT EQUIPPPED TO SOLVE THE ISSUE.
I NEED TO KNOW HOW EASY IS IT TO GO BACK TO THE HOMEHUB

Ahh, that would have been replaced by Kelly Communications as they are contracted to OR/BT to change the modem due to overheating problems with the old modems.

Your statement is not correct well not 100% correct, There is 2 different types of hardware that is installed into the local cabinets the key here is 2 different types so in the home if say TYPE BLUE is in the cabinet then TYPE BLUE VDSL modem gets installed if TYPE RED is installed in Cabinet then TYPE RED VDSL modem gets installed ...
The overheating issue was mainly caused before as the vdsl modem was not wall mounted and the heat was trapped internally causing the problem thus why all installs should be wall mounted from now on allowing max ventillation around the VDSL Modems.

  • HT5517 Does the onscreen code ever change?

I'm curious if the AppleTV's (generation 3) AirPlay onscreen code changes from time to time.  Like a rolling key.  I would actually prefer it changed each time someone connects, but have noticed that, so far, it's always the same.

It will stay the same unless you reset it.

  • Automated Camera Enable System(Ever Changing Graphics Detection!)

So I have embarked on creating an automated system that connects a second camera into a connect meeting room.  We have two cameras in the room, one setup as a workstation that the person giving the meeting sits at, and a second camera mounted to the wall connected to a headless computer mounted on the wall.
I have a web server setup on that wall mounted computer that calls automation executibles created with AutoIT that make the system login to the meeting specified, that all works great, my issue comes to enabling the camera.  I can take the easy way out and just tell everyone "Hey, put your camera pod in the lower left hand corner then hit the button on the webpage to enable it", OR what I would much rather do would have the functionality of being able to FIND that button and click it.  Well I've been able to run bitmap detection on the screen and find the button, hurray works great, ok go to move or resize the pod, hey it broke...a closer look at the screen then tells me that pesky button changes colors instead of it being a static image!
Ok, lets try using the bar at the top with the lettering then make it run down through the screen and find the button...and success again until the pod is resized or moved...I've tried playing with the tolerance the image searching dll for autoit and still nada.  The image changes too much to detect it on a consistant basis.  I've tried several screen shots of buttons/headers/etc, changing the background size of the meeting, changing the screen resolution of the headless system, reduced the colors on the system, everything I can think of to try and get that pod to be more "static" when it comes to displaying on the screen.
Anyone have any idea of what I might be able to find in that window thats unique to that window enough to at least find it?  If I can find that pod I can run detections on the edges of it and find the button to turn the camera on.  I also put in a feature enhancement request to add a shortcut to turning the camera on, that would make this a done project already...
Any suggestions would be more than welcome at this point!

That's a long post (sorry but I don't have time to read all of it - I'm here to try to help folks - and not in any professional capacity) generally, you'll get more replies here if your question is brief.
I run an early 2009 MacPro - 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with Lion. I'm quite happy with the performance I get using FCP X - but I'm used to its odd little ways by now.
The best thing I did to improve performance was to upgrade from 8 GB to 16 GB RAM - the difference was astonishing.
I also upgraded the Graphics Card to ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 M - another good move, but not as spectacular as the RAM.
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
    Other ways to improve performance:
    Create optimised media.
Hide Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power.
Create folders in the Project library and put any projects you are not working on currently, in there. (Twirl the disclosure triangle closed to hide them).
Move your Projects and Events to an external HD (make sure it's formatted OS Extended - with journaled on or off) and run from there.
Keep projects to an absolute maximum of 30 mins (preferably no more than 15 or 20 min). For longer projects, break it up into chapters, then make those chapters into compound clips when you've finished, and add the compound clips to a new (full length) project for export.

  • What is a best practice for managing a large amount of ever-changing hyperlinks?

I am moving an 80+ page printed catalog online. We need to add hyperlinks to our Learning Management System courses to each reference of a class - there are 100s of them. I'm having difficulty understanding what the best practice is for consistent results when I need to go back and edit (which we will have to do regularly).
    These seem like my options:
Link the actual text - sometimes when I go back to edit the link I can't find it in InDesign but can see it's there when I open up the PDF in Acrobat
Draw an invisible box over the text and link it - this seems to work better but seems like an extra step
Do all of the linking in Acrobat
    Am I missing anything?
Here is the document in case anyone wants to see it so far. For the links that are in there, I used a combination of adding the links in InDesign then perfecting them using Acrobat (removing additional links or correcting others that I couldn't see in InDesign). This part of the process gives me anxiety each month we have to make edits. Nothing seems consistent. Maybe I'm missing something obvious?

what exatly needs to be edited, the hyperlink or content or?
