Every once in a while when I open my mail or a page I get nothing but strange lines of symbols.  Many of the symbols are black triangles with question marks in the center.  I completely reset it like new, but problem still exists

Every once in a while when I open my mail or open a page I get lines of strange symbols like black triangles with question marks in the center.  I have reset the ipad2 to new condition but the problem still exists.

A reset does not make tthe iPad "like new."
First, let's ensure that we agree on just what is a Reset...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • Safari Quicktime plug-in is showing me a Q with question mark in the middle

Safari Quicktime plug-in is showing me a Q with question mark in the middle.
Anyone know what this could be about?
Just upgraded to Quicktime Pro; then the Q-question started showing up as web pages were opened.
Don't think my QT prefs changed inbetween un-pro and registration.
    TIA
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Bill
    Welcome to Apple Discussion
    Several places to check
Safari Preferences>Security>Web Content: 4 boxes selected
    System Preferences: Quicktime>Advanced settings:
Enable flash ought to be checked
    - Mime Settings: still images - everything but Photoshop, Flash Pic and PDF selected; video - at least Quicktime Movie. Miscellaneous - nothing checked.
Make sure your Flash plug-in is up-to-date. Latest version is 9.0.45. You can check your current version here.
If you have an older version, download a current copy from here. If you need to install, Safari opens to an Adobe site after the install, confirming the installation worked correctly. Quit Safari and "repair permissions" via Disk Utility in your Utilities folder before you restart Safari.
If you don't need to upgrade the Flash plug-in, still "repair permissions" to make sure permissions are up-to-date.

  • Blue quicktime "Q" with question mark in the middle

Not sure if this is the same as blue boxes with question mark issue that others have discussed or if I need to tweek some quicktime setting, as I'm getting the blue quicktime "Q" symbol with a question mark in the middle. This ony happens on some web sites and I'm at a loss.
I justed switched to a mac, so any directions on how to sort this would be great.
Mac book   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Welcome to Apple Discussions and Mac Computing
Can be a bit confusing during the transition.
Have a look at this earlier post from today for a somewhat similar problem. Particular attention to the first part regarding the Quicktime and Flip4Mac settings. Also, make sure you have Flip4Mac installed, as Windows Media Player is not a Universal Binary application, hence can not run natively on your machine. Flip4Mac automatically converts the WMV files to QuickTime. And make sure your Flash plug-in is up to date.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. From here you can upgrade to Yosemite by re-downloading it from the Purchases page in the App Store.

  • I powered up my macbook and there is a file folder with question mark on the screen flashing.  What does that mean?

  • When website or messages are opened that include pictures, all we get is a blue square with question mark I the centre. No pictures

When we access a site,or receive email with pictures we often get a blue square with a question mark in it, no picture ?

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

  • My Macbook A1181 won't startup. After turn on I get white screen with a folder sign with question mark in the center.

My Macbook won't startup. After turn on, I get a white background screen with a folder icon (question mark inside) in the center. this icon even blinks
    The battery is charging.

It sounds like your hard drive is bad. If you can see it in Disk Utility you may still be able to get your files off of it. If you have one of the MacBooks with the removable battery it's very easy to put in a new hard drive.
Here's instructions on replacing your hard drive http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To buy a hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-5-SATA-HDD-HARD-DRIVE-EXTERNAL-ENCLOSURE-CASE-BOX-/120 636286623?pt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal&hash=item1c167ba69f
Put your old hard drive in an external case and after you've formatted your new hard drive and installed your operating system on it plug in your old hard drive and see if it is recognized by the new system. If so then transfer whatever files you want to the new hard drive

  • My macbook was stolen last month from my car. It would not power, it showed a white screen with folder with question mark in the middle? I don't have my serial number, is there a way to possibly track my computer?

My car was broken into in Uptown, MN last month and my Macbook was stolen along with my Wifi device. Although my computer would no longer power, it showed a white screen with a folder and question in the middle and then shut down. I hadn't had a chance to take it to have it checked, but is there a way to track my computer if I do not have the serial number? And if I purchase another computer is there a way to get the music that I purchased in iTunes back?
    Thanks

Regarding your music, yes you can download it again at no cost. Launch iTunes on the new computer, and sign in to your account using the same Apple ID you used previously. Go to the iTunes Store. On the right side under Quick Links select Purchased. Click on All Songs in the upper left. You'll see a list of the music you purchased from iTunes. In the lower right corner click the Download All link. Note that this may take a long time, particularly if you have a lot of songs. Use the fastest Internet connection that you can.
About the computer, unless tracking software was already installed on it and turned on there is no way to track it.
I would suggest changing passwords of any accounts that you have on the computer, such as email. If you have any credit card information stored on the computer, have them cancelled and replaced immediately.
Sorry to hear about your loss. It is very distressing, I know.
    Best of luck.

  • Folder with question mark and the computer is unable to detect Macintosh HD

Turning on the computer, there is a gray folder with a question mark and it is flashing. Then, I turn off the computer, and go to boot by clicking option at the same time. After I get into the screen, I try to reinstall my computer, but it can not detect the Macintosh HD or other driver that there is no place to install the system. I try to turn on my computer when clicking left ****, left control, and left option. It does not work also. Is there any thing i can do?
can i go to saft mode?

There isn't anything you can do for there. If you have a 2012 MBA your solid state drive has probably failed (mine did two weeks ago). I wasn't able to get into safe mode or do anything with it. I installed the OS onto a USB to get onto the machine properly, but I couldn't get into the hard drive.
If the SSD has failed, you will need to replace the drive, make an appointment with Apple and see if they can help you. If you are outside your warranty there is still a chance they will replace it for free.

  • Flashing folder with question mark on the inside at  start up

My macbook only has a flashing folder with a question mark in it and it clicks.

Flashing questions mark indicates Nac can find a valid system to boot from.
Clicking usually indicates a dead or dying hard drive.
    Do you have backup?
Probably is time to take it to Apple Store to have them repair it for you.

  • When I open my mail on iCloud it opens in Archive... how do I change this?

I want to be taken to my Inbox, not the Archive, when I open my mail in icloud.com.  This seems very strange for it to default to archive.  It didn't always do this.  I've checked "Preferences" and cannot find anything where I can change what folder is the default when you open up iCloud Mail.  Please help!

Change the zoom level in the document's properties, under Open Options.

  • Switched on my imac 24inch intel based and all I get on screen is a folder with question mark flashing,I had backup on external hard drive but when I try to reinstall it can not find my mac hard drive

Try starting up your Mac while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk then click Restart.
The question mark folder indicates your Mac cannot find a system folder to boot from.

  • Help:  Got the dreaded grey folder with question mark

    Hey folks,
I was working in Chrome on my 13" mid-2010 MacBook Pro running OSX10.6.8, plugged in the mains charger and instantly had an unusual (not the beachball- the daisy from start-up and shut-down) freeze-up of the computer.  I couldn't force quit and so shut the computer down using the power button (something I have done perhaps four times in its life-time).
On start up I got the dreaded flashing grey folder with question mark and know that this is serious.  Last week I had a half hour with the U, I and O keys not working and that despite being very, very nice to my machines and repairing permissions and not unduly installing rubbish.
So I have inserted the start up disk for the MacBook Pro to see if I could use Disk Utility.  And got it started (unusually load "whirring" too but I attribute this to heat) and Disk Utility cannot find the disk to repair permissions.
Now-  from what I understand it means the hard drive is gone, right?  Anything that can be done to save it (I cannot afford a new one)?
If not-  how do I get the bits of data on there which I had yet to back up?  CAN I?
    Please and thank you.

So I fitted a new 500GB solid state drive from Samsung (easy enough- only a few screws on the lid, four screws holding it down and four more for the "pins" to hold it in place) but now, when I start up (bearing in mind that the install disk is stuck inside)- I get the Apple logo, then the daisy clock and then, woe is me, the "no entry" sign and eventually the install disk kicks in only to reveal that there is no hard drive to install to.  Disk Utility and Start Up Disk both do not recognise it.
Any ideas what I can do, given that it is not rocket science to install one of these, given there is just one cable to connect and the rest is just to keep it in place?

  • Most of the times my saved tabs open, but every once in a while they don't and I lose them

I usually have a bunch of links open, so I have the settings set so my previous tabs always open. Most of the time, they do. Every once in a while, like today, though, Firefox decides to open to my home page instead. I never know when it is going to do this, so I never know which links to save in case it happens. Often, therefore, I lose several of the links I had open.

The [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2324/ Session Manager] add-on may be helpful - it uses a more complete and fail-proof method, generally, and has a number of advanced features for session management.
