Excel 2008 Number Problems OS 10.7.5

I have suddenly developed a problem in my Excel worksheets. I cannot get a plain number to show. If I format the cell for either number or general, I get the currency format. Every number has a .00 in it or is rounded off to the numbers before the dot. The one workaround I have found is to enter the number as text, then to convert it to number using the drop down menu in the cell. But that's very tedious to say the least. Anyone else have a problem with this?
I'm working with Excel 2008 with most recent updates and running OS 10.7.5
Thanks

Hi Heistein,
Welcome to the HP Forums.
I understand you are having trouble with installing the driver.
I would recommend to take a look through this guide. An 'Unsupported Operating System' Message Displays on a Mac Running OS X 10.7 Lion.
Hope this information helps, and have a great day.

  • Who is responsible for Excel 2008 display problems?

I have Office 2008 installed on MacBook Pro 15" with an Apple Cinema display attached. The display is set to non-mirrored mode. When I invoke Excel and move it to the larger display I cannot position it to the top of the Cinema display. It will not move higher than the level of top of the the power book display as shown in the System Preferences ->Displays control panel.
If I move the PB display position higher with respect to the Cinema display then Excel will also display higher on the Cinema display.
Who takes ownership of this? Apple or Microsoft?

It sure sounds like an Excel problem. Office 2008 is really a 1.0 release by some new programmers. The core functionality works really well but it is a little rough around the edges.
I don't know of an official way to report bugs. There is a feedback link in the Help menu. I have heard of some people getting results from that.

  • Problems pasting from Excel 2008 to Numbers

I'm trying to make the switch from Excel to numbers and ran into the following problem.
If I cut a group of cells from Excel 2008 and try paste it into Numbers it does not work.
I can paste into another place in Excel, Stickies or OpenOffice, but not Numbers.
I can double click a cell in Numbers and paste all the copied into a single cell, but this is not what I want.
Is this a Numbers problem or Excel 2008. Since I can paste from Excel to programs other than Numbers, it seems like a Numbers problem
    Anyone else have this problem.
    Cheers!

Very weird! I don't think your table is too simple.
I tried a simple table and it failed.
In fact I can copy the table from Numbers and paste it into Excel 2008
But when I copy the same table from Excel and try to paste into Numbers, it fails.
I can however paste into stickies.
    *Copy from Numbers*
*Paste into Excel 2008- No Problem*
    *Copy from Excel 2008*
    *Paste into Numbers - nothing!*
*Paste into a singe cell - Fine*
    *Paste into Stickies - Fine*

It turns out that during the migration to Lion, Excel.app got lost and was no longer in the Office 2008 folder.  I was launching it from the dock.  Restored it from Time Machine and all is well.
Stange that the program was lost, though.

  • Unable to view any spreadsheet in Excel 2008

I own current generation Macbook Pro running Apple- provided MS Excel 2008. I also own a Dymo printer that requires a particular kind of script to print labels.
When anyone sends me (by email) a spreadsheet prepared in Excel 2008 or earlier, I canNOT see the data contained in the spreadsheet unless I view it as a "quickview" or within Excel as a web page preview. My wife has the same computer but does not have the same problems. I am thinking either the "script" setting is awry or something is checked or unchecked somewhere. Any thoughts?

OK, so this is the problem. For the record, it may not be anything specific to MS Office. I consider it premature to just send you over there until that has been established.
You said you can't see the attachment, but you can open it with QuickLook. That means you must be able to see it, doesn't it? Have you tried double-clicking it in Mail? Have you tried clicking the "Save" button in Mail? Have you tried dragging the attachment from the body of the message onto your Desktop?
Also, do you and your wife use the same e-mail server? Does it behave the same way when you send it from a different e-mail account and to a different e-mail account (a total of 3 different permutations). Try creating a new user account on your Mac and see if the new account behaves the same way.
I know that is a lot of things to do. I'm trying to gather more information. A common problem lately is that lots of e-mail servers are scrambling either the messages being sent or received in attempts to remove viruses or phishing attempts. Often they leave e-mails in an unusable state. If you want, you can always send an example to me. Select a message, choose "Send Again" from the Message menu and replace the To address with info at etresoft dot com (that's me).
Some people are a bit leery about sending e-mail, but often that is the only way to diagnose this kind of problem. I have done that a number of times here in Apple Discussions. A couple of times I've found bugs in Apple Mail, but usually the problem is elsewhere and I can tell you where that is.

  • Filevault and PowerPoint 2008, Excel 2008

    Hi,
Since I got no answer from Microsoft, I thought I try my fellow Mac Users.
My Company requires FileVault be activated on all Mac laptops. With 10.5.x and Filevault enabled, we can not save Excel 2008 or PowerPoint 2008 documents. Word 2008 documents works just fine.
I have tried all versions of Office 2008, 12.0, 12.1, all the way to the current 12.1.4. Same problem occurs.
Anyone have the same experience? Any solutions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ed

I have no solution, but I have no such problem even though I work in a corporate environment that uses FileVault. The IT department configures FileVault, however, and it is possible that your company has not enabled something it needs to. It should be easy for your company's IT person to test whether the problem really has to do with FileVault [try a machine with FV off] and, if it does, whether it relates to the configuration [e.g., by using the built-in FileVault with its most permissive setting].
Although I have not experimented with NeoOffice and OpenOffice recently, I am always suspicious about compatibility claims. Even when compatibility is "very good," it is not perfect and the exceptions can bite. Personally, I prefer using Mellel (or Pages) for writing, and Keynote for presentations, but I would never claim more than pretty good compatibiity. Problems can arise, e.g., with respect to graphics, footnotes and endnotes, unusual fonts, and so on. They may be "minor," but not if you don't catch them. Conclusion: get your IT folks to track down the problem.

  • Lost program icons Microsoft word 2008 and Microsoft excel 2008

Hi I accidently turned Microsoft excel 2008 and microsoft word 2008 into wads of trash that disappeared when I accidnetly clicked the icons and moved them from the dock into the internet box.  I talked to one person already but can't seem to get back to them and he suggested that I use MIcrosoft Office 2008 but hte problem is is that I don't have it anymore because I deleted the program from my computer a few days ago (yesterday or the day before)  I had originally bought hte program from Best Buy and downloaded it from a disc but  I can't find the disc anymore.  Do you know what  I can do to recover the programs I checked the applications, office (of course, and word and excel 2008 aren't there and they aren't in the trash I checked there too.  I thought that it might be on my back-up time machine?  And I also couldn't go to undo to change what happened.  Thank you.

Things just don't disappear. If you didn't put them in the trash, they must be there somewhere. Click the magnifying glass at the top right side of your screen and search for Microsoft Office and see if you can locate the folder. Also, I'm wondering if you actually installed office or if you were just running it from the downloaded .dmg file? When doing the search, keep an eye open for a Microsoft Office 2008 DMG file.

  • Mac : menu disapear on opening Excel 2008 files since update of PDF

    Hello,
I've a problem with Excel 2008 since the last update of the PDF printer ...
All the menu, except the main menu of the software, disapear. I must go to the main menu, select the display I want, and chaecked again "menu" ... It's very disturbing.
May I wait for another update, or there does a solution ?
    Thanks.

  • MS Excel 2008 will not remember my page setup :0

I am using MS Excel 2008 and have my page setup for 11x17 sheets in a landscape mode. I have set the print area and the sheet size. Every time I close Excel and re-open it, it reverts back to an 8.5x11. Anyone else experience this? It is really getting to me. Thanks

If you format for a different printer as a test, does the setting "stick"? Do you have the latest drivers for the printer? Have you updated Office to its highest version (should be 12.2.6)
This question should probably get a review in the MS Excel forums here:
    http://www.officeformac.com/ProductForums/Excel/
At least you'll get a more targeted look at others who may have experienced the same problem. I did not get Office 2008 until after I no longer had access to an nice 11x17 printer. However, I have 2008 on my MBP as well as a G4 tower and an older PowerBook G4, so I check, but probably not tonight.
I seriously doubt there is a hardware problem with your MBP, and probably not a Mac OS problem either. MS seems to have rushed 2008 out the door.

  • Mavericks, MS Excel (2008), Dock

In the Dock, I keep a link to one of my MS Excel (2008) spreadsheets. I've had this for years, and through many OS upgrades. A simple click on the item in the Dock launches Excel and the file opens. Since upgrading to Mavericks, the Dock link (even after having changed the link) now causes Excel to open a copy of the original file, with a slightly altered name (a numerical suffix). This didn't become noticeable until Saving changes - because of the new name, Save becomes, essentially, Save as..
If I open the spreadsheet from its file location (double click the file within the Finder window), the file opens properly (i.e. not a copy, not a new name).
I tried to create a similar situation with files from other applications. They all perform properly. It would seem that Excel is the only app (yet discovered) that has this very unique Dock-related problem.
If you are an Excel user, please report here if you have noticed or otherwise found the same behaviour; or if your tests open the original document properly.
    73, Brian

I am well aware that I am not talking to Apple here. Note that the question was posed to Mac Excel users who have moved up to Mavericks, in order to determine whether it is a problem uniquely here in my machine, or if it is widespread. Once that is determined, a direction for further investigation will have been identified.
With regards to your EDIT question: Perhaps it wasn't clear when I wrote:"...the Dock link (even after having changed the link) now causes Excel to open a copy..."  Not only did I re-establish the link (drag original file to the Dock), I also created an alias, and dragged the alias to the Dock, thus creating a link to the alias. The end result was the same - a copy of the original file, complete with a new name, was opened.
Yes, the problem seems unique to Excel, and yes, perhaps, it is Excel where the problem exists, but when troubleshooting, one should always start with the most recent change, and in my case, that is OS 10.9. My post is to determine if others are having a similar experience.

  • Excel XML map problem with Greek characters.

    Hi,
I created a dashboard with XML map connetion. My embeded spreadsheet is linked to an xml file which contains my TOP 50 Customers.
Customers names are in Greek so my xml Header is like:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-7"?>
ISO-8859-7 is the Greek encoding for xml.
After embeding the spreadsheet into the dashboard i add a list component to present my TOP 50 Customers.
    So far so good.
Then i add a refresh conection button to update my TOP 50 list. In preview mode everythinng works fine. But when i try to update my data by clicking the refresh button my list is updated but the customers names is turned to unidentified characters.
Is there any encoding problem or this is Xcelsius issue?
    I use Xcelsius 2008 sp3 fp 3.2

    You are right.
I opened the XML file with notepad and saved it with utf-8 encode, also changed the xml tag to <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> and it worked fine.
I map it in Excel Spreadsheet without problems and after refreshing in Xcelsius the characters are diplayed normaly.
So, correct me if i am wrong, the problem is the file encoding, no the xml encoding.
Both, file and xml encoding should be UTF-8.
As i mentioned before my xml files are Crystal Report 2008 reports which are exported as text files with .xml extension, so i have to look for answers in other forum.
    thank you

  • Thoroughly Bizarre Excel 2008 Issue

I am having an issue with Excel 2008 that I can not find duplicated anywhere. When I have a workbook with information on multiple tabs, and I move to another tab, Excel opens a new workbook that completely duplicates the information on that tab. The only way I have found to fix this is to quit Excel and restart it. Once restarted, it will work fine for a while, and lull me into a false sense of security. Then, I will be working away (as I am now), and I looked up at my second monitor and saw 8 new, unsaved workbooks stacked up. All duplicates of the tabs I had been navigating to.
I have rebooted. I have thrown out the file "com.microsoft.Excel.plist" from my Preferences folder in my User Library. I have verified and repaired permissions. I'm on a MacBook Pro 2.4 Intel running System 10.5.7. My Excel is part of Office 2008, v 12.1.9. Please help. I am really sick of quitting Excel and restarting it!

Hi MHny and welcome to the forums. While someone here "may" be able to help you with your issue, your problem is more of an Office 2008 issue as opposed to a MacBook Pro issue. You may have better luck trying out the Office 2008 support sites:

  • How do I convert an excel (2008) document to Numbers?  When I drag the Excel document onto the Numbers icon I get, "Import error.  The file format is invalid"

How can I convert an Excel (2008) document to Numbers.  When I drag the Excel document onto the Numbers icon I get, "Import error.  The file format is invalid.

That extension identifies the most current Excel file format, a format that can be opened by Numbers '09 (and by Numbers '08).
A check with Numbers '09 shows it capable of opening .xlsx files when right-clicked (and Numbers chose as the application to open, when double-clicked (if Numbers has been set as the default application to open this type of file, or when dragged to the Numbers icon in the dock.
I see two possibilities for Numbers inability to open it and the message you receive:
    1. The file is not actually an Excel file, and the sender has added the .xlsx extension to the filename manually.
    2. The file is an Excel file, but has somehow been corrupted.
Have you tried opening the file with a different application? The open source Office suites, OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice and NeoOffice can also open .xlsx files. If they're unable to open this one, that would point toward the file itself being faulty. You can download these applications from their rspective websites, linked in the names above. All request a donation to support future development, but only Neo requires one to have been made recently, and that only for the current release (which won't be necessary to open .xlsx files).

  • When trying to save a file under Excel 2008, ver 12.3.3, with extension .xlsx or .xlx, I am told it can't be saved because it is "read only." How do I change the file from read only?

When I try to save a file using Excel 2008, ver 12.3.3, with extension either .xlsx or .xls, I get a message saying it cannot be saved because it is "read only." How do I change it from read only? (And how did it ever get to be read only?)

Save the file as a new name. Close and Open the new file.
Most likely when a file transfer happens, Office makes the file 'Read Only'.
If you have two opened files with the same name, the last opened file will be 'Read Only'.
