Excel Add-in Retrieve issue

Gurus,
I have a user SAMSHRE who was able to do retrieve in Excel add in, however, suddenly, the members is not being able to do retrieve using Excel add-in. Is there anything I need to look at to solve this issue.

Hi,
To solve the issue, you have to check first the security. Try to connect to Essbase from his computer using another user.
If it works you have to check the security configuration. So, you have to check the user roles and the security filters.
If it doesn't work, try to close all Excel, and disable/enable the add-in of his computer.

Excel Add-In - retrieve does not function

following upgrade to v 9.3.1 many users are experiencing the following:
Following connection to database the "Retrieve" does absolutely nothing. No error message, no feedback at all.
Task manager reveals another unexplainable EXCEL execution is also present though not shown under the "Applications" tab; found only under the "Processes" tab. We refer to them as PHANTOM instances.
"End Process" of the PHANTOM EXCEL execution and the other begins to work.
Users are reporting an increase in these occurrences.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Have an idea of cause or a means of prevention.

The official answer is that the Essbase Add-in will only work with the first instance/session of excel.
When an application error occurs, it will occasionally be hung in the process of closing, holding that instance. This is what you experienced and so when you opened a new workbook it was in a new session. That first session was doing all the work, but silently prevented you from getting the results.
In the task manager, you have to kill the first session before you open the new session and things will work. Short of creating a proxy session for everything or using a product like dodeca, there is no other answer.
I'm currently working on an update to my connection manager add-in to use a proxy session, but this is not a commercial endevour. I will likely post a subset of the code that can do this alone, once I get it beyond a beta version (note: it's not trivial, and I expect it to take quite a bit of time to make it work properly). Either way, you would have to put this "abstraction layer" between the excel sessions and the essbase add-in, so it's obviously not for everyone.

Issue with Excel add in

Hi Experts,
Some of the users receive the following error message while attempting to retrieve data on a previously-working query in essbase excel add in:
"Essbase has encountered an internal Excel error. Your sheet will not be overwritten and none of your data will be lost. However, you are strongly urged to exit Excel and restart in order to clear up the problem"
Also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Essbase client and also tried with essbase add in version 9.3.1.3, but nothing worked.
Please let us know your thoughts on the below issue.

I, too, would recommend rebuilding the workbook.. Excel workbooks can get some funny behaviors, particularly if they contain VBA code. VBA in Excel stays 'semi-compiled' and never really clears itself out and a bunch of phantom references remain (and are completely hidden). I have seen some very strange behavior cleaned up by rebuilding the workbook..

Issue while performing pivot in Essbase Excel Add in

Hi,
I'm faced with a peculiar issue by which I'm unable to pivot data from excel add-in.
I've verified that the Formula Preservation is disabled. Yet, i get the error 'Cannot pivot while in Formula Preservation Mode'.
I've tried reinstalling many times but the issue persists. Whats wierder is that anything i change in options gets undone once i perform a retrieve. Example, If i select 'Suppress #Missing Rows' option and retrieve any data, when i check back the options, it is deselected. Seems like the options are carried forward(if thats possible)?

Can we retrieve Data of Single Dimension in multiplecolumns in Excel Add-in

Hi All,
I have strange requirement of having single dimension in two columns while retrieving data from essbase using Excel Add-In.
Logically I feel it is not possible however we are looking if there is any possibilty of work arround for this requirement.
Whenevr i am trying to retrieve data using a macro on a single column we are able to successfully do it. But in case of multiple columns we are unable to do it.Do let us know if there is any work arround or alternative method to handle this requirement.

Not completely sure what you mean by "single dimension in two columns". Normally this request comes down to wanting to show multiple levels from a dimension, e.g...
_______________"Sales"
"100" "100-10" 12345
"100" "100-20" 34567...which is definitely not possible.
If you just mean data like this (with multiple columns from the same dimension)...
________"100-10" "100-20"
"Sales" 12345 34567...then that should work fine.
If you could post a sample of what you'd like to see, it would be easier to answer.

Issue with double click zoom on Essbase Excel Add-in

Several of my users have been experiencing a problem recently when the do a double click zoom in or zoom out in Excel Add-in 7.1.3. It will start clocking (icon flashes as well as the cells while the clocking is occuring) and the only way to break out of it is to hit escape. Sometimes the clocking will only last a minute but, depending on the number of members that you can drill down into, can last several minutes at which point the users end up just escaping out. This doesn't happen with all templates or with all users. Zooming in and zooming out using the menu works fine. This only occurs with double click zooming (which to the users is much quicker and they prefer not using the menu).
This is Excel Add-in 7.1.3 on Office 2007 which I realize is not certified compatible but we have not had this issue until the last few weeks.
Anyone else having this issue? Ideas?

sometimes you dont find any excel sheets open but there will be a process allocated to it and running ..you can see this in the task manager..
so go to task manager and try deleting all the process related to excel.
Now after deleting all the processes you find NO excel sheets open..
Try viewing the required excel sheet now..
hope it works now..

Retrieving of exchange rate - Excel Add-in/Planning

We have entered exchange rates in Hyperion Planning desktop andrefreshed it to Essbase. We would like to be able to retrievethese rates in Essbase Addin and have not been able to do itdespite retrieving all the possible combinations ofdimensional members. We are sure that something ismissing but is unable to detect it. Can someone please adviseon this? Le'ts just assume that we only have Accounts andEntities in Custom dimensions. The others being the defaultScenarios, Versions, Time Periods and Years. Appreciate anyfeedback. Thanks

You will be able to use Essbase Excel Add-in to view the exchange rates. They are stored under the HSP_Rates dimension. Just make sure that you use the dimension name itself during member selection for Entities, Versions, and Currencies dimensions. Select the members for each dimension as follows: Scenarios: (scenario associated with the exchange rate table) Years: (year(s) to which the rates apply) Time Periods: (level zero time period(s) to which the rates apply) Versions: "Versions" Currencies: "Currencies" Entities: "Entities" Accounts: "HSP_Average", "HSP_Ending" or "HSP_Historical" HSP_Rates: "HSP_Rate_currencycode" eg. Excel Add-in issue!

Hi,
we are using essbase 7.x and excel 2003. The issue is that when we open the excel add-in with the
application, it going to sheet2 instead of sheet1 by default. and moreover we are trying to have only 3 sheets when we open excel. It is displaying 15 sheets.
Is there any setting that needs to be taken care as part of Excel for Essbase?

The 15 sheet issue can potentially be caused by an excel option, unrelated to essbase.
To change the setting, go to the Tools/Options menu. On the Options dialog select the General tab and you should see a setting for "Sheets in new workbook" about half-way down. The default is 3, but if this were changed to 15, new workbooks would always begin with 15 tabs.
As for the Sheet2 default, once a workbook is saved, the default tab is the tab that was active when the workbook is saved.
However, macros can always cause either of the two conditions above to be reset/modified. If that is happening, find the offending application and hit it with a hammer. I'm kidding here, of course -- it needs a screw driver.

SQL Server Excel Add In for Data Mining: How do I retrieve the coefficients underlying the logististic regression model in excel

I constructed a logistics regression model inside Excel using the Data Mining Add In. I would like to see the coefficients for each input variable. I can't seem to find this inside excel. I tried running queries in DMX inside
Mgt Studio but that seems to return multiple coefficients
for each input variable. I am seeking
ONE coefficient for each variable.
Other applications I have used in the past provided the intercept and one coefficient for each input variable. Can someone advise on how I can achieve that inside excel or Analysis Services?

We have this problem when we install the add-in using an Administrator's login ID.
The problem is that the add-in automatically registers the Excel add-in. This causes a whole host of problems, including the one you describe (even when we install with the user as the admin on their own machine). Other problems include conflicts with other Add-ins (e.g. nVision) & utlities that import PDF into Excel.
For our Citrix environment we do the following:
· Install Essbase Add-In as Administrator
· Replace “ntuser.dat” file in Default User profile with the “ntuser.dat” file from Administrator’s profile. (Replace C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\NTUSER.DAT with C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\NTUSER.DAT).
· Delete existing user profile from the system
Once user logs back in, a new profile will be created to work with Essbase add-in.
Note:
1. 1. NTUSER.DAT file is a hidden file. It is only visible if show hidden file option is enabled
2. Deleting user profile from the system remove all user customization such as shortcuts, favorites, pst file etc. as well.
BUG NOTE: When you try to Unregister the Excel Add-in from your Start button, the shortcut points to the wrong file name. The file name should be "unRegExcelAddin.exe"

Smart View 'Free-Form' vs Excel Add-In

The following Sample.Basic retrieve is valid in the Excel Add-In:

It will retrieve in Smart View, but always converts immediately to this:

Note that the Scenario and Product members have jumped over to 'stack' on the Year member.
I can't find any way to stop this happening. The context is converting some legacy Add-In reports. Users don't want to change the layout at all, if avoidable.

Hi Glenn, to respond (seriously) to this point - yes, it's not really a disaster. But there are ten years' of accumulated Add-In reports at this client, some formatted carefully for presentation.
One nasty real example:
Say those POV/page members for Scenario and Product are fed from formulas; cell references to a master sheet. And that those rows are hidden for display purposes.
Now the user starts using Smart View instead of the Add-In. The first time she refreshes, everything looks good, so she thinks "No changes necessary for this one - next!".
But Smart View has - unseen - pasted the current literal values for Scenario and Product into all the other columns on the report (none of the formula options seem to affect this).
The next time the user runs it, updating the master sheet Scenario and Product doesn't have any effect on the retrieve.
It's a shame Smart View feels the need to mess with the layout, since it is clearly capable of interpreting the first format correctly.

Essbase - Data not saving in excel add in

Hi everyone,
This is my first time building a cube from scratch and would appreciate if you guys can point me to the right direction. I am currently running into issues with saving data using Excel add in. I have a BSO cube with 6 small dimensions (Currently with less than 15 members in each) + 2 additional attribute dimensions. I created the cube manually in EAS and did a sample data load through a flat file without any issues.
I have been able to use the Excel add in to retrieve the sample data and navigate the tree without any issues as well. However when I tried to retrieve/lock and send , manual changes on the grid, the data doesn't seem to save. When I hit retrieve my changes are gone.
I haven't made too many changes to the default settings but have checked that the application allows for updates and that I have the Application Manager Application access as well. Are there any settings I should look into that might be causing this?

two possible issues
1. The member you are trying to send data to is a dynamically calculated member
2. you are trying to send data to a member that is the only child of a parent and the parent is not tagged as never share. If there is a one to one relationship between a child and parent, there is an implied share that is created. The NEver Share on the parent will fix that.

Error 109 : MaxL api instance is not Active after installing excel add-in

Hello Gurus
I am getting error Error 109 : MaxL api instance is not Active while expanding essbase server in EAS console.
I am using EPM 11.1.2.1 on Windows server 2008 x64 with MS Office 2007 x32
EAS was working properly before installing Excel Add-in,
What i did is
1. I first installed excel add-in and when I clicked on connect Log-in screen didn't appears.
2. Then I reinstalled excel add-in and it started working properly and EAS was also working fine.
3. But after restarting VM, EAS is not working, it is giving error like "Error 109 : MaxL api instance is not Active"
4. I also searched on OTN for EAS issue and checked following environment variables
ESSBASEPATH : C:\Oracle\Middleware\EPMSystem11R1\products\ExcelAddin
ESSLANG : English_UnitedStates.Latin1@Binary
5. And also tried reinstalling EAS
Any help will be highly appreciated.

I had the same problem, after add-in 's installation on epm 11.121
Without solution, I was forced to uninstall all epm and reintsall.
Is there another method to solve this problem ?

Excel Add-in connections not refreshed

I am using Essbase 9.3.1.4. I have created a new planning application and set up the security / provisioning in shared services and syncronized to EAS. The security for the user works correctly in the planning application but when we try to connect via the Excel Add-in, the new planning application does not appear on list of available applications/database in the connection box. It does list existing planning applications available to the user, but not the new one. Does anyone know in v9.3.1.4 what file the Essbase add-in connection box is reading to present the available application/databases to the user for selection? For some reason it seems this file is either not being updated or it is ready an old version of the file. We have the same issue when using SmartView ad-hoc, any non-admin userid cannot access this new application. SmartView Planning does work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Essbase Excel Add in not working

Hi All,
I have installed hyperion 11.1.2.2 version in windows 2008 server(64 bit system)
Server is up and running fine.!
I have installed Excel addin, then i got one issue here. When i opened excel, Smartview is displayed on the top but Essbase is not displayed. I tried so many ways, but no use.
give me some suggestions regarding to solve this issue..!

Mady, I hope you were not trying to open the Add-Ins directly from Windows. The Essbase XLL and XLA work within Excel as Add-Ins, not as executables. When I doubled-clicked on the XLL and XLA, I got the Microsoft Security warning, which I assume that is what you were doing wrong. You can also google Excel Add-Ins on how to manage it if you are not sure what to do. It's very straight forward.

BPC for excel Add-in Conflict

Hi,
I'm trying to find out if there any known excel add-ins that conflict with BPC for Excel (v7) and how the conflicts manifest themselves.
I am currently specifically interested in conflicts with SAP BW BEx Analyser but would be interested in any others also.
Would be grateful if anyone could shed some light on this.

Usually, Crashing means excel will show crashing error message and restart it.
Excel will just return excel error message. NOT BPC or 3rd Party ADD_IN error message because it happened at the EXCEL while it is processing request from BPC addin and other 3rd partty Addin. (Of course BEX is SAP product. that's why BPC NW support BEX report in 7.5 but still it is not fully integrated with MS.)
Sometimes it happens when retriving data from BPC or sending data. As you know those are critical functionality of BPC.
Again, it depends on the addin but based on my experience, Hyperion Addin and BEX addin had a problem when it runs together with BPC addin. some simple addin might not have any issue but still recommendation is not using 3rd party addin because we don't know where the error comes.
