Excel Services Web App Refresh failure

I started having an issue where manual refreshes of my Excel Workbooks are failing after installing SP1 in my Office Web Apps 2013 farm.  The workbooks are configured to use a target application ID from the secure store service and they refresh fine
when opened in the Excel client application, just not in the browser.  The error is "An error occurred while accessing application ID XXXX from the secure store service.
Nothing seems to show up in the ULS logs either when this happens.
Any ideas?

  • Unable to view Report Filters on Excel Services web part

    I have an Excel 2010 file with Pivot Charts. I want users to be able to select filters for the pivot charts to modify their chart/report as needed.
    This excel file with Pivot Charts is visualized using Excel Services Web Part on SharePoint 2010.
    My problem: The Pivot Chart Filters do not appear on SharePoint. They are available when the file is opened in Excel 2010.
    Is there a way to have chart/report filters show up on SharePoint (excel services web part)?

    As per the article below it seems that Pivot Chart Filtering is not available with Excel services. The article reads
    "PivotChart reports are not interactive when displayed in a browser. You cannot filter a PivotChart report directly, but if you interact
    with the PivotTable report that supplies data for the PivotChart report, the PivotChart report updates accordingly. This means if you filter the PivotTable report, the PivotChart report updates to show the filtered data set."
    Unsupported Features in Excel Services
    Though this article is for MOSS 2007 but if you read the following article for SP 2010 it reads "All other unsupported features continue
    to behave as they do in Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Excel Services."

    Hi Sandip,
    Please access CA and go to Services on server page, then check if Excel Calculation Services is in started status. If not, please start it and test the issue again.
    If it still doesn't help, please bring up IIS Manager and locate the site running ECS (might be SharePoint Web Services), then select Authentication in IIS section and disable ASP.NET Impersonation.

  • Verizon Messages web app refresh

    In Verizon Messages web app, is there a way to increase the frequency of the refresh? Texts are taking an inordinate amount of time to display after I hear them come in on my phone. Mostly, I have to do a manual browser refresh. I've tried Chrome and Firefox. Any suggestions?

    Well, you might can find a browser extension that will auto-refresh your page.  I use another app called Mighty Text that syncs with my Android and has a browser window that refreshes automatically as well as allows me to respond via small pop up window when not in browser and lets me dismiss notifications on the phone from the PC.

  • Windows Server 2008 (TS) and Lync Web App installation failure

    Hey folks,
    I've run into a little big problem due the Lync Web App installation via mstsc on a stand alone Terminal Server 2008 SP2 64 Bit. When I tried to install the Lync Web App Plugin via
    mstsc and standard user I get the message:
    "The system administrator has
    set up a policy that the installation
    prevents"
    Till that it's just fine.
    The next thing I did is to disable the UAC and DEP, but same problem as above. I also tried to extract the install EXE for the MSI packages to allow the installation. But did not work.
    After I searched the internet for an answer relating to this problem I've had to create or change a RegEdit entry. So I switched to the registry to:
    HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
    and created a DWORD entry DisableMSI and set it to 0. Then I tried the installation of Lync Web App Plugin via
    mstsc and standard user again and this message appeared:
    "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2755"
    Now the curious thing is, that when I am logged on locally, the standard user is able to install the Lync Web App Plugin. And it works fine. After the installation is complete I can switch to mstsc again and it works.
    The only thing what doesn't work is to install Lync Web App Plugin via mstsc into the user profile.
    Any suggestions?

    Before you install the application, change your user mode to installation mode.
    You can run the following command with Prompt Command:
    Change user /install
    After the application is installed, change back to execution mode, you can do so by running the following command:
    Change User /Execute

  • Problem with 'sort and filter' feature of embed codes in Excel Online Web App

    So my question has to do with the Excel Online feature where you can share a spreadsheet and embed it in a website with the option of allowing users to sort and filter the data. (The option is under the "Interaction" heading.)
    One of the options if you look closely is "Let people sort and filter" which is not checked off. In the embed code you can see "AllowInteractivity=False". The problem is that when I check "Let people sort and filter"
    the embed code changes completely - going from:
    <iframe width="700" height="900" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" src="https://onedrive.live.com/embed?cid=dontworryaboutitEDFD383&resid=6BAA9620AEDFD383%21107&authkey=AFj3X8xq2U3IfDE&em=2&wdAllowInteractivity=False&Item='Sheet1'!A1%3AI32"></iframe>
    to:
    <iframe width="700" height="900" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" src="https://onedrive.live.com/embed?cid=dontworryaboutitEDFD383&resid=6BAA9620AEDFD383%21107&authkey=AFj3X8xq2U3IfDE&em=2&Item='Sheet1'!A1%3AI32"></iframe>
    If I manually change 'false' to 'true' that doesn't do the trick so I'm not sure what to try next.
    Any thoughts?

    The app pool for the "SharePoint Web Services Root" is running under the LocalSystem account.  I have verified that the SYSTEM account has access (full) to all the MachineKeys in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys folder.
    Any idea on what the permission is causing this problem?
    Just as a side note, all the Excel services, web apps activation, etc. have all been confirmed they are setup, running, etc.  No errors are logged in the event log.

    Hi Rob,
    From the error message "Security.Cryptography.CryptographicException: Access is denied", we can know this issue was caused by access denied. Based on your description, you known that. It is great.
    However, I would like to mention that the Excel Calculation Services is running under another application pool other than the SharePoint Web Services Root. So the application pool account may be different.
    Please follow these steps to get the application pool account:
    1. Open Internet Information Server(IIS) manager.
    2. Expand the site "SharePoint Web Services"
    3. Select each application under the site
    4. Click "Basic Settings..." from the right panel.
    5. Repeat step 3 and 4 till we get the application that has path like C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\14.0\WebServices\Shared\ExcelCalculationServer from the "Basic Settings"
    6. Now, get the application pool name from the "Basic Settings"(Edit applicatoin) dialog.
    7. Go to Application pools
    8. Select the Excel Calculation Services application pool.
    9. click "Advanced Settings" from the right panel.
    Now, we can get the application pool account from the "Advanced Setting" dialog.
    Please make sure this account has permissions to write key to Machine Keys folder.
    Alternatively, use the Process Monitor to monitor which account is used to write file to the machine key folder. We can filter the Result column to check who is denied to access the folder.

  • Odata Connection Refresh Error while using excel web app - Project Online 2013

    Hello All,
    I am trying to work with odata reporting on project online 2013. I am not using MS Excel client, I open any of the available default report in excel online. when i try to refresh data connection from data tab. it's giving me an error
    as show below
    screen..
    I have already enabled "PWA for excel web app refresh" feature.
    Following the blog instructions and microsoft support, i have tried to grant permission to
    AppId=  00000009-0000-0000-c000-000000000000
    And In the Permission Request XML field, copy and paste the following XML:
    <AppPermissionRequests>
        <AppPermissionRequest Scope = "http://sharepoint/projectserver/reporting"
    Right="Read">
        </AppPermissionRequest>
        <AppPermissionRequest Scope = "http://sharepoint/content/tenant"
    Right="FullControl">
        </AppPermissionRequest>
    </AppPermissionRequests>
    Now, According to the microsoft, it should show Microsoft.Azure.Azureservices as Title but as per below screen shot it shows Power BI Reporting and Analytics..
    title.<o:p></o:p>
    However, i click on ok button and check that the permission has been granted. i can see Microsoft Power BI reporting and analytics in the app permissions.
    I again go to my BI reporting, open my report in excel online and refresh the data connection and nothing changed. It's giving me the same error.
    I hope that i am able to narrate my problem. Please tell me, What i am missing here...

    Ok, why did manually add / update the permission XML? Do you get this error for new Excel based reports? Test creating a new one, example here:

  • Excel Services - slicer in web part?

    Is there a way to put a PowerPivot slicer into an Excel Services web part?
    From what I've found, it looks like slicers aren't a named object that can be displayed, but it's difficult to tell. Is everyone really only using Excel Services in Excel Web Apps?

    JJ78 you are my hero - the print-area idea works wonderfully! I'd been looking for a way to just display my PivotCharts and slicers in a "clean" view (without the Excel row and column headers, or the unappealing necessity of hiding gridlines and
    moving the supporting PivotTables to way down on the page). The slicers are visible and work, and overall it is a much cleaner look to a Web part to NOT to be so Excel-like!
    Note for anyone else using JJ's elegant solution who may not be as familiar with print areas in Excel:
    1. In Excel, select the worksheet area you want to display (for me , this was the cells containing/around two PivotCharts and two slicers)
    2. In the Ribbon, select the Page Layout tab
    3. Click on Print Area - Set Print Area
    4. In the Ribbon, select the Formulas tab
    5. Beside the Name Manager (which as JJ says is where you can check the defined names within the workbook, to prevent conflicts) , click Define Name
    6. Type in a name (like "PrintArea") - you will see your selected cell range in this dialog
    7. Click OK
    Thanks again JJ!

  • Secure Store and Excel Services

    Greetings,
    I have an Excel workbook that connects to an external SQL database.  A simple stored procedure is executed and the data displayed in a sheet.  This is a simple connection and works without issue when I open the workbook in Excel itself.
    I now want to display this workbook in Excel Services, so I performed the following:
    I created a Secure Store Service (no issues) and added a new target application.
    In the target application, I selected Individual as the target application type.
    On the next page, I used the correct credentials.
    Saved the new target application entry in secure store services.
    Then I updated the Excel workbook data connection to use the Target Application ID I just created in Secure Store Service.
    When I refresh the data, while the workbook is open in Excel, all works without issue.
    However, when I open the workbook in Excel Services, the data refresh fails; External Data Refresh Failed - An error occurred while accessing the application id from Secure Store Service.
    Can anyone tell me what the conditions are that would cause this?
    Thank you!

    Hi Bob,
    Whats up, how are you? Do you want to send me an email or give me a call, Ill send you a copy of our Book Business Intelligence in SharePoint 2013 and walk through the Excel Services Issue..
    Take the Application ID and add it to the Excel Services Service Application, Global Settings, Application ID.
    While still in Global Settings Set the File Access Method to Process Account
    Please make sure the Library you are using for the Excel Workbook, and the Data Connection Library are both in a trusted locations.
    In the ODC File make sure you have set Data Connection Authentication to None and specify in Excel to Always use this Office Data Connector
    Cheers,

  • Excel services, charts

    Currently I as tasked with uploaded some excel workbooks and having them autorefresh on our SharePoint 2013 site. I have a few questions though
    1) with the excel service web part, is there anyway to make it not look like Excel? Though my charts in the excel file itself are small in nature, when the web part shows them, they're massive, how can I size it? Also, is there a way to only show the charts
    from the excel file and not all of the unused excel lines?

    What you can do is provide the chart title in the excel file and set web part chrome to none. This way your web part will display chart and it will not look like Excel.
    Also to display just the chart you just need to select area (cells) around your chart and then go to Formulas Ribbon tab and click "Define Name". Enter the name of that particular region. Upload this file back to SharePoint.
    Now when you configure your excel viewer web part you can specify the name that you specified as "Named Item" value in web part configuration.
    This way it will only show your chart and nothing else.
    I hope this helps.
