Experience in Java but lack of knowledge .. Help will be appriciated...

Hello All,
My question is regarding my career which I know you guru's can help me with. I am working as Java programmer in company from past two years. My Company tune up a software which is basically a off the shelf quality management software developed in US. Tune up means write small Java code snippets and make it working for a client.
After working in this company I felt I don't do much java programming. When I look at the IT Job market, there are thousands of people out there much better and more advanced then me. I am lack of practice in developing programs. I am preparing for my SCWCD, but I dont know where I can practice these concepts.
I want to know how you Guru's manage to practice and learn. Is there any better way I can learn and practice at the same time. Please do help because I feel I am loosing the confidence in myself.
Thanks in advance... Thanks a lot...

In my 10+ years of experience, I've rarely ever learned anything from company training, coworkers, or mentors (which generally don't exist).O_o
I expect everyone, regardless of knowledge, to be able to learn something from coworkers or mentors.
Nor have I learned anything from collaborating with others on hobby projects, as I can never find anyone to collaborate with who is of similar skill (no one wants to be my tutor, nor do I want to tutor others). Joining an open source project is a possibility if you can find one that interests you, that you feel you can make a positive contribution to, and that you can commit to. Though I have never ran into that situation either. Most other developers are either new to Java, not really interested in Java or programming (the type that just does it as a job), highly reclusive, or less interested in collaborating or helping than in attempting to demonstrate their superior intellect.I don't think that that is true for open source developers.

I've learned pretty much everything I know from books, a few online resources, and just writing my own programs by myself. I'd say that's your best bet. That is a good choice, but you can also learn bad habits if you don't have anyone to learn from and if no one is reading your code.

  • I wish to teach Java, but may need some help

    Hi,
I teach Junior High, and since no formal programming class exists, I have made a programming club. We have spent the last while doing some mindless tech work, but now I want to get them bitting their teeth on Java. I taught it a few years ago, so the code doesn't worry me a bit. Its more the initial setup and I'm open to ideas.
Primarily, each computer connects to the host with a private directory (h: drive) and a public (s: drive)
While I'm reluctant to load java on 30 machines (as the club handles 4-8 at a time) is there a way to install Java on the public drive and allow students to access it from time to time?
Is there a smaller version of java that might be better? We will not be using any various libraries, focusing more on input and output and really simple programs...
I also noticed that notepad is attaching .txt to our java files. I'm just going to have to get used to the students renaming their files before compiling...
any advice on the setup and teaching will be great!
    thx

    hi
i am s tudent myself and i will tell u what they r doin in out college lab
we have around 200 systems in the lab and they have installed java on only the server. The folder in the server is mapped on to each system as it boots. Indeed this makes the process of logging in slow...but it eliminates implementation of java on each machine. most students do have a copy of the compiler in our logins for better usage.
as for using notepad, i would suggest other java ide rather than notepad....jcreator is the best i have seen so far...editplus is also good(its so small not even 1mb)
the above products are license free for trial usage and cost a little for registration...
actually jcreatorLE is completely free...try using it...
all the best in ur endeavour...
    cheers

just down J2SE v 1.4.2_15 SDK but when I want to
install it, I have program with free space memory, I
want to ask is there any software that cost less
memory or I have to delete some programs from disk C
    Thanks !!!If:
    a) you don't have enough space on your hard drive for a <100MB install
    2) You are downloading a 5+ year old version of Java to develop with
    d) you don't know the difference between memory and free space
    Then:
    c) You need to realize that - technologically speaking - you are about a decade behind.
    - You need to buy a new computer.
XI) Get a good java book written within the last five years.
That should at least get you started in the right direction.

How did you move you rlibrary to the external drive?
Did you follow these steps -> iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
or did you simply drag it over?
    Don't just drag it over.
This morning, I attempted to download itunes to the new external drive so I could play and easily import my music from there, and itunes won't download to the external hard drive! The error message I'm getting says itunes will only download to the startup disk/
Do you mean you are trying to download the iTunes program so you can install it?

  • With the new version of ITune, I do not know how to add a podcast to a playlist.  The "add to playlist" which was easily found on older versions is not available.  Your help will be appreciated.

I have difficulties with the new version of ITune, which I never experienced in the older versions.
    1.  I do not know how to transfer a new radio podcast to a playlist.  The previous option "show in playlist" does not appear.
    2.  I do not know how to download an older podcast from the list of available ones offered for download.  The latest one only is downloading, none other, not even the most recent but one.
Your help will be greatly appreciated in these difficulties.
    I thank you in anticipation.

Do you clean your iPad screen?  Do not use standard window cleaners, with ammonia or alcohol, like Windex, but a damp towel, followed by a micro-fibre cloth is recommended.  There are also cleaners you can buy which are specifically designed for iPad/iPhone devices, such as iClean from Monster.

Only Apple Account Security could help at this point. You can try calling Apple Support in Canada - you'll have to find one of the several ways, such as Skype, to call an 800 number from outside of the relevant country - and ask for Account Security and see if they can help. Or you can find a friend who speaks Chinese and ask them to help you talk to Apple Support in China. There are really no other options that I know of.
Note, by the way, that these are user-to-user support forums. You aren't speaking with Apple when you post here.
    Regards.

  • NO clue about JAVA but need help please

I am cleaning up someone's else work who used to be employed here. I know ZIP about Java but am becoming more and more familiar with WAR files and deplying them with Jrun on an NT2K Server. So here is what I have. I have a deployed app from months ago. I have a new app to deploy. I did this successfully. I can access it, etc. But I am getting some SQL error.
Can anyone give me any idea what it could be? I have looked at my sqlcustomauthentication.java file and i have not anything to it. Why would something change on this when all I really did was re-deploy it.
    Here is the error.
    Thanks a TON!!

  • At a dead end.  A java student in need of help.

    I've hit a wall.
The program is supposed to allow the user to draw five different polygons using the polygon class and let the user pick the color for each polygon and move each polygon around the screen once it is filled in. The user clicks to add the points and then double clicks to fill in the polygon. Then the polygon is added to the array. Up to the dragging around the screen the program works fine. When I click on a polygon with the shift down nothing happens and I've spent several hours trying to figure out why.
I've placed several System.out.println's in the code and I think I've narrowed down the problem. (I hope) I think it might have something to do with the canvas repainting. Because the S.O.P's show that the program is going through and executing that code. It might also have something to the do with my polygon array, but to my knowledge that is setup fine.
Thanks a bunch if you try to help.
    Brad

sir i am using datasocket read ,i am communicating with java but my problem is that bcz im using while loop to see if value has changed my labview consumes all the processors time ,sir i want a event like thing so that while loop is not in continuous loopHi Sam,
I want to pass along a couple of tips that will get you more and better response on this list.
    1) There is an un-written rule that says more "stars" is better than just one star. Giving a one star rating will probably eliminate that responder from individuals that are willing to anser your question.
    2) If someone gives you an answer that meets your needs, reply to that answer and say that it worked.
    3) If someone suggests that you look at an example, DO IT! LV comes with a wonderful set of examples that demonstate almost all of the core functionality of LV. Familiarity with all of the LV examples will get you through about 80% of the Certified LabVIEW Developer exam.
    4) If you have a question first search the examples for something tha
t may help you. If you can not find an example that is exactly what you want, find one that is close and post a question along the lines of "I want to do something similar to example X, how can I modify it to do Y".
    5) Some of the greatest LabVIEW minds offer there services and advice for free on this exchange. If you treat them good, they can get you through almost every challenge that can be encountered in LV.
    6) If English is not your native language, post your question in the language you favor. There is probably someone around that can help. "We're big, we're bad, we're international!"
    Trying to help,
    Welcome to the forum!

  • Java Plug-In's SSV Helper 2, Start Detector - are not Verified

I have the following Internet Explorer Add-ons relating to Java...
I had an old version of Java, something like 1.5 or 1.15 ? - it was from 2006... then i installed the latest version of java from the official java website (where i had to say yes to installing add-ons / active-x controls even before the download begun)... my new version is Java version 6 update 10, (build 1.6.0_10-b33). i think i uninstalled the old version of java first.. it left some files in its installation directory so i manually deleted them after i had installed the new version though, it had its own folder with the version number as its name, a different folder for each version.
These are the java plug-ins i have...
Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper (Not verified) Sun Microsystems, Inc. jp2ssv.dll
Java(tm) Plug-In SSV Helper Sun Microsystems, Inc. ssv.dll
JQSIEStartDetector Impl Class (Not verified) Sun Microsystems, Inc. jqs_plugin.dll
i guess the SSV Helper (the first one, not 2) was the old version of java.. and the other two are the new version.
My question, why are they not verified, is this normal, a danger/problem... considering the old java version add-on is verified.
Also what do these add-ons do?, are they needed.
    thanks.
I have windows xp home.sp3??? - its fully auto updated... internet explorer 7.

Exactly .. I have way too much Java stuff in my add-ins that is NOT verified and am having problems deleting that which I may not need
I wish we did not have to be a "developer" just to have the latest version of Java working on our systems. I realize more reading has to be done but for someone like me who has so many versions of Java and can not find out why this is so .. and how many I need in order to just prowse the web in the latest version of Java .. it is time consuming to have to go thru these Java add-ins and time consuming to have to want to remove older versions of Java.
Sorry for the nit picking but it is valid for those of us who don't want to know all of this stuff.

  • New to JAVA, but old school to programming

Objects & Classes & Methods, Oh my!
I'm pretty new to java, but I've been programming in several languages over the years. I thought it was about time to update my skill set, especially with the job market as it is today. I wanted to go JAVA because it's not specific to any environment.
I picked up a begining JAVA book and was a little confused. When I was learning programming a program was called a program. a peice of code in a program called by a statement was called a subroutine (it was performed then control returned to the calling line and continued).
Now I'm trying to make sense of everything I have read so far and trying to relate it back to my old school of thinking. I was hoping it would make it easier to retain and I could expand it as I learn and possibly realize that it IS different. I know it's a new way of thinking, but stay with me for minute.
What I used to call a program is now a CLASS in JAVA (this can be a collection of code or other objects). A sub-routine in a CLASS is a Method. I know that the language part will come as I use it since I understand if's then's and whatever you use to gosub or goto, but I want to make sure I have down the lingo before I go to deep.

I have no idea how you can compare Java to Cobol.
DataFlex? How about that! In about '84 I switched to
DataFlex from dBaseII. In '91 DataFlex changed from
procedural to OOP. It took most of us at least a year
to adjust, and then some to write concrete code. It
was tough. They had bugs and we were limited with DOS.
BUT, it was a great OOP training experience. Anyhow,
needless to day Java is miles ahead on all fronts.Small world. I was stuck in the old DataFlex Ver 2.3 at that time. The company I worked for had the newer OOP package. I did get to work with it some, but not enough to become totally familiar with it. We started to move out of DataFlex towards PowerBuilder towards the end of 1995. I did get some OOP from that experience, but again only enough to learn about global variables, instance variables, and a few other items. I hoping that I will be able to get the solid OOP background that I need from JAVA since I hear through the grapevine that it may be a new tool that we will be looking at to enhance our programming. I was looking at PERL but even the PERL programmers we have agree that JAVA is more scalable.

I would like to embed interactive widgets in iBooks using iBookAuthor. The widgets in question started life in Java but GWT has allowed them to be converted to javascript and to run on web pages (for example, http://softoption.us/content/node/437 scroll to the bottom). In theory, iBookAuthor can bring in most html5, and much javascript. The technique is to wrap the html in a folder, with 2 extra files, a plist and a default png and then change the extension of the folder to ‘.wdgt’. This is the technique for making Dashboard widgets for the Mac, and Apple even have the Dashcode software to do it. So what you really do is to make a Dashboard widget, then iBookAuthor can import it.  So far, so good. And some  folk have been doing this, for example http://www.prweb.com/releases/2012/2/prweb9242432.htm http://www.panophoto.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=10417&p=158330#p158423 However, if you start with GWT and create a single page with one button and a Hello World, compile it, and get the WAR file (I use Eclipse here)… the Safari browser and others will run it properly (even on an iPad). Then if you wrap it, a proper Dashboard widget is created, which runs properly on a Mac. Then if you go to iBookAuthor and put a custom widget in the Text, then drag it in. It is accepted by the text and shown as being there. However, if you use Preview to look at it on an iPad, it is gone (or was never there in the first place). Anyone any ideas on this? [And iBook Author seems to give no warnings.] The widget is at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/46713473/Test6.wdgt.zip I have bells and whistles that I’d like to get into an iBook!
    Thanks for any insights.
    Martin

I do have a little to add, which might help someone. Indeed, opening a blank page and dragging the widget straight in seems good in difficult cases. But, actually, I was also able to insert successfully from the Toolbar especially to blank pages. So, it may have been something to do with the columns and stuff like that. Anyway back then the insertion would show in iBooks Author but not in the Preview on the iPad. I moved on to actual Google Web Toolkit output javascript. Basically I had three at hand to try: a Hello World with a button which went straight it, one of moderate complexity, (for example with a built in Lisp interpreter), which also went straight in, and finally a more complex one that initially was rejected by iBook Author. Author complained that there was an unsupported media file (of course, Author does not tell you which one it is, that would be too easy). [Remember, this was a proper working Dashboard widget which could be installed on a Mac]. Among other things I had read remarks about .gif files. When looking through the GWT war directory at the actual javascript etc files, I noticed there were two gifs there one called ‘clear.cache.gif ‘  and a second one called  ‘0F89659FF3F324AE4116F700257E32BD.cache.gif’. (Now, there is obfuscation so the numbers here may be different from case to case.) The clear.cache.gif did not seem to be anything special. But the other one is an animation. It is three little boxes that twinkle (rather like a waiting spinning cursor).  So, I opened that file and saved it to itself (that picks the top frame of the animation and saves only that, leaving you with an unanimated gif). The resulting widget drags and drops into iBooks Author (and seems to work properly at a quick glance). So, if you are having trouble with ‘unsupported media files’ converting animated gifs into unanimated gifs might help in some cases.

  • Java programming applet issue newbie help

    hello
i am a student taking an intro to OOP course using java. i have textMate and blue J as java editing environments. i have successfully managed a few lessons but now i am having trouble with applets. my applet source code will run in blue j but not in textmate and i think the reason has to do with the applet extension. first when i run the program successfully in blue jay it utilizes the sun.applet.main environment to display the applets output. but in textmate the identical code generates an error which i finally have a some information about why?
    the error in textmate reads
:exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: main
i am not sure whether this has to do with the import java.awt.*: or just the public void paint(Graphics g) method (code Below)
the eventual intended output of the applet is to a web browser via an html document which calls the java applet but when i run this html document both firefox and safari display blank pages.
i am on macpro with the latest java version - just downloaded last week
    is there some unique import statement to utilize import java.awt.*;
import java.applet.*; in mac os or ???
BTW the smile.gif is in the project folder with the java document
    thanks for any help
