Exporting high-res

I am trying to export high res jpegs from lightroom, but when I do and try and upload to make a bigger print (11x14) it says resolution is too low. What settings should I use? The files are raw from the start. Do I have to use tiff files to make them high enough quality for that big if a print?
Thanks for any help.
Sarah

Your pixels per inch (ppi) is unnecessary high.
For display on a computer monitor 72 ppi, max 100 ppi is right.
For printing on your printer usually 240 ppi, or 300  ppi is right, unless you have a high-quality printer with a native resolution that is higher then select that resolution.
But besides the ppi you have also to select the size in inches - it's just left of the ppi window.
So for your print of 11 x 14 inch select that size or select 11" for "Short Edge".
You have set your quality to 100. That is fine for a print, but unnecessary high for display on a monitor. For that choose a value between 60 and 80.
BTW this value determines the compression of the jpg, the smaller the quality-number the higher the compression and the smaller the file size.
Now, having said all that, the question remains why do you export your image in order to print it?
Is there a reason that you don't just use the print module?

  • Edit Low-Res, Export High-Res

Is there a way to edit with low-resolution video files (for quicker rendering times) and when the project is finished, final cut can access the corresponding high-res files for output?
Gopro automatically creates .mp4 files and .lrv files after a shoot.  The .mp4 files are 1080p and my computer has trouble even wathcing them.  The .lrv files (stands for low-resolution video) are like 480p and would be awesome to edit with, as long as final cut could keep track of all the snips and affects and apply them to the corresponding high-resolution .mp4 files.
anyone ever heard of or done anything like this? seems like it would help a lot.

interesting.. multipe drives, i didnt even know FCP kept such good track of all your drives!
I'm no good in 'details', but like to explain 'concepts':
when you cut a video, you don't literally splice a 100MB file into two 50MBs ones
think of FCPX basicly as a data-base: there's a pool of data (Events); there are lists of instructions (Projects) - the lists don't touch the content. Same concept with Proxies: the Preview window is so tiny - why shoveling the GBs back'n forth, if a 'reduced' version is on display anyhow? No need to edit 'natively': the 'edit list' = Project has to use the originals only on export.-
so, FCPX handles here <counting> six drives. And I'm just a soccer-dad, doin' weekend reports (ok, using 5 cams, all diff. standards - shoestring budget) - no problem. It's me who needs EventManagerX not to get lost with all this games and players and seasons and stuff
vice versa: one of the biggest mistakes is to confuse this data-base by moving files 'behind its back' - soooo many reports 'Events lost!', just because some smart moved data OUTside FCPX via Finder - no wonder, the data-base loses track!
last word about the concept of data base: that's why 'file names' and manual folders are completely waste of time - tags are much better, add as many key-words and meta-data you like - and let the data base find the clips for you (a computer is much faster in search'n find).-

… i'll have to try that out for myself...
It works surprisingly well! I was a huge fan of iMovie for years, and when switching to the Big Toy, my first concern was 'will it blend compute?' No budget here for a new Mac - and it does perform well. Very well. For a slow guy like me ..........

  • Exporting high res .avi

I have a client that wants the final as a .avi. I set up a new setting in compressor, but it comes out low quality. What are the right settings/export flow to get top quality. can .avi achieve that kind of quality? thanks!
    A

"preview clip" what does that mean?
I thought you were meant to send some work to your client just to have a look at.
i need highest res possible for this video that will be in kids cameras
No I am not sure what you mean,
kids will view in their camera? As if the camera was the tool they use to watch?
They are in the actual video?
    Kids?
not sure why the client wants .avi?
    So kids are your clients?

  • CS5 PDF export (high res) is causing lines and color shifts where transparent images overlap

Has anyone else had this issue? I've attached two samples of what is happening. Basically, I have a headline with an image that overlaps it a bit. The frame cuts through the headline (you can see it in the sample) and causes the type to break. I've also had it shift my color significantly so that the green that is under the frame is much darker than the green outside the frame. Everything is in the same color space using the same profiles.
Originally, I thought it was a PDF anomolly, but it prints just as you see it. Can someone please explain what is happening here?
Thanks in advance for any input.

That makes sense. I had a colorist that works with one of our vendor pre
-press houses set us up. We calibrated to our vendors machines so that we could share files when necessary. Their recommendation was the distiller workflow. Even setting the profile in the export to pdf option in ID caused it to be a bit different than doing it the long way. That may have changed since this was a couple of years ago, but I've just continued to do it that way.

  • How do you change an iphoto size to 300DPI high res for exporting

How do you change an iphoto  to 300 DPI high res for exporting to email?

Short answer: the dpi is set when you decide what size you're printing at.
Long Answer: Dpi means nothing in the digital world of your computer. There are no "inches" to have "dots per..." Size is measured in pixels. That's the same on your camera. It doesn't take 10 x 8 or 6 x 4 shots. It takes shots measured in megapixels. For instance 4,000 x 3,000 is a 12 megapixel camera.
Using that example, that shot from that camera has 12 million pixels. So that's how many "Dots" there are. To decide the ratio of dots per inch, you now need to decide the "inches" part. And that's printing.  Print at 10 x 8 and the dpi will be 4,000/10 or about 400 dpi. At 6 x 4 then it's 4,000/6 or 660 dpi. Work the other way: Print at 300 dpi and the resulting image will be about 13 inches on the longer side.
So, your photo as a fixed number of pixels. Changing the dimensions of the print will vary the dpi, changing the dpi will vary the dimensions of the print.

  • Export/Save as High-Res Jpeg

Is there a way to export a document @ a different resolution than 72DPI? I know I can set the horizontal/vertical scale to save it at a larger dimension at 72DPI, but I need the file to be actual size and 300DPI.
This is part of a larger process, and I'd prefer to do the entire process from Illustrator, and not have to open the files in Photoshop to change the size/resolution.
Also, is it possible to change the color mode to CMYK or Greyscale for the exported Jpeg?

Thanks again, I checked the Javascript reference for CS6, and don't see any 'app.system' method listed, and I get 'app.system is not a function' when I try test it. That sounds like it would do what I wanted if available. I could probably add a call to run it from Bridge into my script, but one of my goals is to not run any additional applications if possible.
The main application is written in XOJO (formerly RealStudio), and is a very large program which handles a lot of aspects of project management for my position. This particular function was originally written as a separate Javascript to save out barcodes from a supplier's illustrator file. It has expanded and been incorporated into the application so it now stores the saved barcodes (EPS) into a database, as well as does some other processing after the files are saved. I am currently trying to add a high-res jpeg into the database as well, and would prefer to do so when the original EPS files are saved. Another part of the application can create the jpegs from Photoshop, but I'd prefer to do everything from within Illustrator.
I've got it mostly working for now, just have to deal with an issue with the file paths returned from the jpegs not being recognized properly.

  • Confused between best/high-res export from FCP

Oh the pain of making stuff up as you go along!!  I need to say that since what I am about to ask may sound incredibly amature, but then again, that's what I am.
I use FCP6, and usually send my timeline straight to Compressor and choosing "DVD:Best Quality 90 minutes."  Now being the amature I am, I just went for the option with the "Best" in it.  My videos look great, but now I am getting a question from a client asking if their dvd will be in High Res?  This made me carefully inspect my settings in FCP which are as follows:
    Frame Size: 1920 x 1080 (HDTV 1080i (16:9))
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    Field Dom: Upper (Odd)
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    QuickTime Video Settings
    Compressor: Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
    Video Processing
Reder 10-bit material in high precision YUV
    Motion filtering Quality: Best
So I want to make sure that I am providing High Res.  I realize that HD is not DVD and therefore my DVD's are SD. But I want to make sure that I am giving the best under my program'(s) ability.  So I've search the chat rooms and have found that some people say to export timelines via QuickTime as with Current settings and that will provide the best.  However, I have heard also that I should use Compressor for this.  The problem is that I realy, truly don't know which settings to choose from if I go with Compressor based on my Timeline's settings.
Finally, the really stupid part of my question(s); Is High Res considered HD, or just the highest possible with SD, or simply Blue-Ray?
And there you have it.  Thank you so much in advance.
    Crayton

Hey Shane, thank you for your response.
    I have some follow up questions for you;
    1. Do you recommend exporting my timeline as a QuickTime and then simply sending that to authoring, or QT then to Compressor or Compressor only?
    2.  My authoring software is DVDSP.  Under the preferences, I always and obviously have it check for SD. Should I change it to HD?  This is a weird question I know since there is no HD for DVD, but it confuses me further since why does this option exist in DVDSP? If I did use this option, would it make my DVD un-watchable? (if that is even a word
    3. Finaly question and soon to be an issue that I am going to be faced with.  I have been filming for a client for a year now and I've filmed it all in HD. They now want me to begin to prepare the videos to be broadcast on TV.  The station they have been working with has told them to tell their "video guy" (me I guess) to make sure that the end result or output be in HD.  I have to put together 28min and 30 sec segments each week once the show begins.  Again, I've filmed, captured and edited in HD, but how do I get them their segments?  And should I also export them as QuickTime Self Contained?  If I did the QT, doesn't that simply take your timeline files and make them into one viewable file but not compressing them thereby leaving it in the HD format it was edited in?
Crap sorry, I decieved you.......I made it look like there was only 3 questions...........sorry:)
    Thanks again man,
    Crayton
ps forgive my spelling and grammar

  • How did I export a High-Res image from my FCP Project?

I know how to export still images using Quicktime Conversion. But it is possible to export High Resolution images from my FCP Project. You help would be much appreciated

Wow man, that's not the most efficient way to get stills. You can do this in FCP, it's easy. Here is what you do....
Go to EXPORT and then USING QUICKTIME CONVERSION
You will see a dropdown box in the right corner that says FILE FORMAT. Change that to STILL IMAGE.
Underneath you can choose which type of still Image you would like to convert the frame to (JPEG, PIC, PSD, etc) You can also change the quality
    Hope this helps.

  • Looking for a high-res drawing app for the iPad

I've tried a few of the available iPad drawing apps like Sketchbook Pro and Brushes. It's a little hard to tell, because documentation tends to be short on details, but it appears that most of them (with the exception of Brushes) only let you work and export images at 1024 by 768 resolution. That isn't really high enough resolution for professional work.
Brushes is the only exception I've found. You work on the iPad in Brushes at 1024 by 768, but they have this OS X app that can convert your exported images to a higher res.
To me that's crazy awkward and time-consuming, and I think Brushes is OK as a drawing app, but not necessarily what I'm looking for.
Can anyone give me some better insight into the matter?
Is there some underlying technical reason that all of these apps have a hard limit of 1024 by 768 resolution?
Is there an app other than Brushes that can produce pro-level (high resolution) image files on the iPad?
    Thanks,
    JS

  • Is it possible to create a script to produce a high res and low res pdf and jpeg from Indesign at the same time

Hi, I'm just wondering if there is a way to automate a long process I have to do to create assets for my job.
I have a single page InDesign 6 file which I have to output three ways:
A low res pdf without bleed or trims
A high res pdf with bleed and trims
A low res jpeg downsized to 2% of original size.
If anyone knows if this is possible I'd love to hear from you.
    Thanks in advance

Automation requires creating your own IDML script for output. Scroll down on this page to the section on Scripting resources. The text is a bit confusing. It says InDesign CS5 Scripting resources, but then the paragraph for that section says the PDF files are for CS6. I haven't read through these, I just found them by searching for "indesign automation". It does say in part that is can be used for preparing files for printing, so once you figure it out, it should be a single click option to do all three steps.
You can do them now with the menus you have, assuming you also have Acrobat Pro installed. With any document open, choose File > Adobe PDF Presets, and choose either from the prebuilt defaults, or create your own in the Distiller. However, I don't see a way in the Distiller settings to choose whether or not to include bleed and marks, so I'm not really sure how you'd have them on for one and not the other. As far as JPEG output, that can be chosen under Export. You get a choice to set a resolution and JPEG quality level, but not a size, so the output will be the dimensions of the document.

  • How do you creating a B/W high-res pdf?

I created a full page full color ad in InDesign CS3, we decided to switch to a B/W ad instead. How can I create a high-res B/W pdf?
I looked throught the different choices when I "Export a High Quality PDF" but didn't seen anything about B/W.

  • Editing low-res proxy, then applying changes to high-res

    Hello
I'm developing one continuous image for a large wall that will be seen from about 1-2 feet viewing distance. It has to be about 100 dpi.
My image is currently 21,600 x 8100 pixels at 8 bits CMYK. It may get bigger. I don't have to do much manipulation, but a lot of it is using brushes and the smudge tool.
    2 issues:
    1) I have a 12-core Mac Pro with 24GB RAM. The smudge tool is sloooooow when working on this image (like one smudge at max brush size takes 15-20 seconds to take effect).
    2) IS there a "warp mesh" tool that I can use in place of the smudge tool?
Is there a way for me to edit a lower-resolution version of this image, then apply the changes I made to the high-res version? then I can use the smudge and brush tools and finessé my work without the machine bogging down, and the imagery will look correct. I'm looking for a way to use these tools more in real time while working with this big image.

This appears to be the solution (at least, it is for me). I can apply my changes to the low-resolution proxy by saving the mesh and then applying that same mesh to the high-resolution image. The large brush sizes (in comparison to the image resolution)  that I am afforded in the low-res version are brought across to the high-res because the changes are not applied as brush strokes, but rather as alterations to an overall mesh. the changes to the mesh are what is transferred when I export and import.
Applying the mesh is pretty slow, and it requires a few tweaks at the high-res level, but it gets me 95% of the way there. I think this is workable.
To recap - here are the steps:
    1) I make a low-resolution version of the image (like 1200px wide)
    2) I make my edits to the image using Liquify
    3) before committing the Liquify changes, I "Save Mesh" in the Liquify tool
    4) I open my high-resolution image
    5) I use liquify, but I do not use any brushes, but in stead load my saved mesh from the low-res
    6) profit.
    thanks for the help folks!

  • How can I generate/copy to high-res rasterized output?

Okay, I admit, I'm very new to vectoring, but I'm running into an annoying rasterization problem with Adobe Illustrator CS3.
Ok, so I have a vectored image. It's low-res (72 DPS), because it's basically just lines. The preview window in Illustrator shows beautiful, totally smooth lines: picture-perfect. I "Select All", copy it into Photoshop (as pixels), and lo and behold, the image looks totally crappy! All jagged edges, no anti-aliasing, etc. So I figured I just make the image a bit larger, set the document raster size to 300dpi, and saved the new .ai file. To no avail, either. Even transformed it to higher res. Didn't solve it either.
At long last I resolved to just taking a bloody screengrab from the preview window, thinking that would at least give me a clear shot. Alas, I thought wrong. Illustrator still passes a crappy image to Photoshop! (Or rather, what you get in PtrScrn is apparently still vectorized data that Photoshop continues to show horridly). So, now I'm faced with an Illustrator preview window that can show the vectored image better than anything else, but with no way to export it in that quality to a rasterized image! Very frustrating.
I hope someone knows how to solve this. Thanks.
P.S. I wish I could show you, but I can't make the screengrabs!
P.P.S. I'm talking about "Overprint preview" above. "Pixel preview" also looks crappy in AI. So, the question then becomes, how can I output my stuff in "Overprint preview" quality?

Please do not pay attention to the rude and sarcastic Doug Katz
    No, please do.
Threads like this are quickly becoming the most common type in this forum: Someone who has obviously spent zero time looking at the documentation, just launches a program which they admit they know nothing about, and then come here asking for help using ambiguous gibberish that makes absolutely no sense in the context of the program. Then they try to "cover up" their sloth with "cute" or "hip" colloquialism.
Doug's sarcasm is dead on-point, and is a very clear and succinct way to drive home what I just said above (which you will no doubt consider "rude," regardless of the fact that it is just a simple and direct statement of the truth).
The thread then proceeds to become a lengthy series of blind-leading-the-blind posts, with everyone making mere guesses as to what the thread originator is actually doing. To wit:
It is not necessary to use the Smart Objects option to obtain smooth rasterization of something copied from Illustrator and pasted into Photoshop. That is not the purpose of Smart Objects. (See the documentation.)
It sounds like Iwakura-san is merely pasting something into Photoshop, seeing the initial unaliased display inside the transform box, and assuming that something is wrong. When you paste vector artwork from Illustrator into Photoshop, you get the Paste As dialog. You can then select Pixels, instructing Photoshop to rasterize the vector artwork (Photoshop is doing this rasterization, Iwakura-san, not Illustrator) to the resolution of the current document after you have positioned and scaled it as desired. As long as the artwork is shown in its transform box, you can scale it and position it because it's still on the clipboard as vector artwork and only a low-res preview of it is being displayed, to facilitate your positioning it. When you have it positioned and scaled as desired, doubleClick inside it, and it will then rasterize to the Photoshop document's resolution and antialias.
But again...that's all just more guessing at the meaning of a very poorly described question.
