Exporting in MP4 - is it possible?

I have been doing all my i Movie videos in H264 as .mov for awhile, but recently had the luck of getting a PS3 (its awesome!). The PS3 understands H264 (Sony calls this AVC), but not .mov. So I want to export movies as MP4 so I can watch them on my TV through my PS3. Is this possible?
Thanks.

hmm, my 'naked' (=without mov container) generated h264 have all the extension mp4 ... so, I can not repeat your observations (no PS3 either.. owning a SuperNintendo.... 96?)

  • Export multichannel mp4/h.264 with Adobe Premiere Pro CC

    Dear community,
we currently test the Adobe Premiere Pro CC trial (German) on a Windows 7 Professional PC.
However, we are not succentful in exporting a multichannel mp4/H.264 clip.
We haven't found an answer on our issue so far, so I hope that this question was not answered several times before in this forum.
If we chosse the H.264 exporter, we cannot select a multichannel audio export (only mono, stereo, 5.1).
In contrary, if we select the Quicktime exporter, we are able to export our sequence with a 4 channel audio master with 4 mono tracks, but we can only export it with a DVCPro Codec in a mov container.
If we try to select a HD H.264 preset we get an error alert stating that the preset contains a not compatible video codec.
    What are we doing wrong?
    Thanks for every suggestion.
    Thanks in advance
    André

    Thanks for your thoughts, Richard.
Your are right, we currentky use the Adobe Premiere Creative Cloud version.
We managed it to solve at least the error message. It was caused because Quicktime was not installed together with the Adobe Premiere Pro / AME setup on our computer.
After we installed Quicktime 7 manually, we can select a Quicktime/H.264 preset without any problems within the exporter settings.
However, the Quicktime/H.264 export dialog seems to only allow a mono or stereo audio export. No multichannel-audio export.
This possibility is only displayed in Richards case, if we select the Quicktime exporter and an Uncompressed Video or DV preset.
Our question to the Adobe developer guys is the reason behind this limition? Other video authoring prograns can export a mp4 with H.264 Codec with multichannel AAC without any problems.
How can we do this with Adobe Premiere Pro (not necessarily via Quicktime)?

  • Export to mp4 audio out of sync

I have a .mov that I'm trying to export as mp4 for web streaming. Actually this is the 2nd I've done and the first went OK. But the 2nd one loses it's audio sync with the video. audio is slow and gets off by maybe 2minutes by the end of the 45 minutes. The .mov is fine but the sync problem is happening when I export to mp4
    Here is what I've done:
I record a webinar w/screenrecord2 and first I tried quicktime pro export (Boy it took a long time!!) to mp4 w/default (H.264, 640x480) except slower frame rate and set for webstreaming. The audio sync was off.
I read something about hinting helping audio sync problems so I then tried export to a hinted .mov and then to mp4 and still not good audio sync.
Next I tried export the hinted .mov via Streamclip and it went much faster and better video quality than the export via quicktime pro but still the audio loses sync.
The .mov is about 2.5gig and 45 minutes long exported mp4's about 80meg
    Any help is much appreciated!
Is there a way in quicktime pro that I can speed up the audio of the mp4 and get it back into sync??

Hi Robert, i just want to check you are actually going to be posting your material to a real streaming sever i.e quicktime streaming server, darwin server, helix server.
If not then you won't actually be streaming the file, i've been doing a lot of work on streaming servers recently and the first thing i found was that the term streaming is often misused. If you are only posting your file on to a web server for people to view then quicktime has something called quickstart which will allow you to watch the video as it downloads like youtube, this isn't streaming.
With regards to extensions i would be much more inclined to use .mov over .mp4, it will make life easier for your viewers because you can guarantee at some point real player will try and hijack the .mp4 extension for some of your viewers.
    Cheers
PS: Can you post hwre the file originates from, it's possible the problem stems from further up the chain but only comes to light when the file is exported. I find editing in quicktime and then exporting can often be problematic.

  • Big Color Shift between exported H264 mp4 and Program Monitor

I get a big Color Shift between exported H264 mp4 on Vimeo/Youtube and Quicktime X and Program Monitor.
There are quite a few posts on Quicktime gamma issues, but there seem to be no solutions and the other editors I know don't seem to have this problem.
I know there will be a bit of a shift but this is MASSIVE. At the moment I add a whole extra adjustment layer to all my clips to get it approximately right, but ofcourse this does not solve the issue nor does it give proper results.
Please do not reply with the "You need a real reference monitor via SDI etc etc ..."
By my logic on the same screen the program monitor should resemble what is going to be the final result in a relevant player like Quicktime X which all normal apple consumers use to watch their films.  I know VLC and Mpeg streamclip gives different results, but mostly when playing Quicktime/h264 files Quicktime will play it thus average users ( the people I'd like to downwload/buy my films )will watch it in Quicktime.
Furthermore, Quicktime X's gamma/color looks very similar to the image I get on Youtube or Vimeo - which is where all my current work is going. I'm not outputting to boradcast or DVD etc.
Strangely enough the MPEG 2 stuff I've done for DVD matches the Youtube output with the Program monitor.
    What am I doing wrong?
I have a Dell 2711 wide Gamut Display which is calibrated with an SPyder 3 Elite using its full colour gamut ( close to 90% of Adobe RGB - thus bigger than sRGB or Rec709) Could Premiere be ignoring the calibration in the Program monitor and making the image values 16-235 and then Quicktime uses all  values 0-255? If so, how can I fix this?
Any help will be much appreciated!

I know this has been a while so hopefully you found some help by now, but maybe this will help anyone stumbling across this.
What people seem to be missing in what you are asking is... this is the same file, on the same monitor, but with a different appearance in different software.  It is not a question of whether the overall monitoring is GOOD, and it is not a matter of hardware settings (as that would most likely propogate across all software) it is that it is not CONSISTENT side by side on the very same monitor.
I had very similar issues that really seemed to get worse when we got new monitors, which is what lead me to chime in here.  The monitors were also wide gamut displays.
    The problem is likely this...
    1. The difference being shown are the difference between software that properly color manages (i.e. Premier or After Effects) and software that does not (i.e. Quicktime or some web browsers)
    2. The reason it is so severe is that the wide gamut monitors are able to show many more colors and thus the difference between the managed and unmanaged software is much more exagerrated than on regular gamut monitors.
I found this great link that helped calm my nerves and helped me get handle on much of what is going on.
    http://www.artstorm.net/journal/2009/07/color-management-wide-gamut-dell-2408/
Now that is not to say that the 0-255/16-235 issue is not also involved here.  It is definitely possible that a specific codec or compressor is part of the problem, but it sounds like it starts with the color management issue first.
    I hope this helps.

  • HT3775 I just made a movie in iMovie and exported in MP4 format, now it won't open, error message says quicktime can't open the file ***? Anyone?

i just made a movie in iMovie and exported in MP4 format, now it won't open, error message says quicktime can't open the file ***? Anyone?

I have the same problem. I'm using Mavericks OS and latest iMovie. Both downloaded last week. I save the movie into File (as directed) and  QuickTime
will not open. I'm then directed to a page of formats which are supposed to be supported on which is .mp4. Any tips?

  • How to export as mp4 and achieve effect of "fast start" in mov export

When exporting as a .mov one can check the "fast start" prepare for internet streaming option. This option allows the end user to start watching your video without waiting for the entire file to buffer/download. That's great.
However, when export as a .mp4 file, the same option does not exist.
Does anyone know how to achieve this "fast start" effect if exporting as an mp4?
I have an existing work around...just rename the .mov to .mp4.
I would like an .mp4 file because I use ezs3 to host my videos and the mp4 player options are far superior to the mov player options.
    Thanks for your help.

I'm having the same problem. I want to export an .mp4 that can start playing as soon as it starts downloading from a web site. Until I can find a solution, I'm using .m4v files, but they're huge.
    Does anyone have a solution?

  • Export to mp4 720p de-interlaced from 1080i AVCHD

How do I export to mp4 720p de-interlaced from 1080i AVCHD footage from a Sony HDR-SR12? The raw source at 1080i looks fine from iMovie 09' but the exported through Quicktime 720p video is baldy jittered. However, the only previous export I have of the same movie is an iMovie 08' version and sadly not what youtube considers HD source material at 960x540 but it was clear of the jaggies.
The previous exports were made with iMovie '08s medium and large to m4v. The export I made of the same edit was to Quicktime via Movie to MPEG-4, 1280x720 5000kbps/sec, framerate current, Key auto, preserve aspect ratio using crop and H.264 options Main, multi-pass.
You can see the results here. http://gallery.mac.com/mpitogo#100281&bgcolor=black&view=grid download it for best results.
iMovie-edit.png is the edited raw source played back in iMovie
iMovie-export.png is the edited and exported 720p movie bad jaggies on motion.
This looks to be a motion related problem the jaggies are not there for slow moving action. Anyone have ideas to exporting 720p without this jitter?
    Thank you in advance!

This has to do with how iMovie 09' handles interlaced footage. The short answer is that it doesn't handle it well. Either de-interlace prior to editing in iMovie or use the 960x540 30p import setting. I know this is the short answer, but it has been quite thoroughly discussed in this forum, so a simple search will provide the long version.
For de-interlacing tools google "JES Deinterlacer". That will get you started.

  • Error in FCE 4 while exporting an mp4 HD Movie

    Hallo,
I try to export an mp4 movie, by using the quicktime conversation mode. I selected mp4 with 20,000 kBit/s. The tests of a short 5 minutes clip were successfull. Exporting the whole movie of 81 minutes was interrupted by FCE 4 after many hours with the massage 'A generell error'. I used an external USB harddisc (70 GB of free space). I also tried to export to the internal harddisc (90 BG of free space): no results.
The error also in Mac OS X 10.5.3 has happened.
    What can I do?

That's not right. If i write a Quicktime movie of my 81 minutes long HD-movie, I see the .mov file growing. After 8 hours I got a correct .mov file of 45.2 GB.
But if I am using the Quicktime conversation with .mp4 encoding, the export file doesn't grow and after 6 hours, the file still is 0 KB large. Then FCE interrupts the exporting process and the file disappears. Shorter movies of some minutes were not interrupted!!! But why?
Unfortunately the using of Streamclip 1.9.1 to convert a .mov to a .mp4 file was not successfully too. After 14 hours of converting the file, I just got 51% of the mp4 movie. This seemed to by wrong.

  • Maintaining quality when exporting to MP4

I'm trying to export my video to MP4, but everything I've tried ends with a drastic loss of quality. Exporting to DV or Sorenson 3 look fine. But exporting to MP4 or H.264 are completely unusable. I've adjusted for higher data rates, more key frames and frame rates...I've selected best quality...I've set it for 640x480 and 320x240...I've tried Compression as well as Conversion and ended with the same results each time. I've also tried to export from Quicktime 7.0 instead of through FCPHD.
I've exported to MP4 with great results before and my software hasn't changed since the last time I exported a project.
    Any suggestions? Thank you.
    Emac 1.25GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Thank you....
I've tried a couple of different ways:
    A.
Select File -> Export -> Quicktime Conversion.
In the Save window, change the format to MPeg-4 and select Options.
In Export Settings, I've changed the File Format to MP4, Video Format to Mpeg-4 Improved and Image Size to 640 x 480 VGA. I've tried different figures for the Data Rate (256, 512, 768) and Frame Rate (29.97, 15, 10).
Last step was to select Save.
    B.
In the Save window, leave the format as QuickTime Movie and select Options.
In the Conversion Settings window, I selected MPeg-4 Video (A few other times I tried this using H.264).
I left the Frame Rate at Current but have also tried 29.97.
Key Frames I left at Every 24 frames.
I increased Quality to Best and Data Rate I've tried changing it to Automatic but have also left it on Restrict to 6400 kbits/sec.
The Optimized selection has been always set as Download.
After Selecting Okay, I've tried setting the size as Current, 640x480 and 320x240.
I've always deselected Prepare for Internet Streaming.
After that, I've selected okay and then Save.
Each time the quality of the video has been very bad. Since the source video comes from a DVD and it looks good when I export to DV or Sorenson 3, there has to be something I'm missing.

  • Which Version of Premiere Elements Supports Export to MP4 H264?

Which version of Premiere Elements started to support video export to MP4 using the H.264 codec for compression?

That's what I wanted to know thanks.  It's a really strange way to support that since you are forced to make an indirect association between a particular viewing device and a resolution and codec.
Is there any version of Premiere Elements that will let me create a custom export profile that I can name with important attributes like resolution and codec name?

  • How can I export 1920x1080 Mp4 directly from FCP

How can I export 1920x1080 Mp4 directly from FCP

    Thanks Russ.
I wasn't thinking about the Apple Devices so much as the Master File set to Audio & Video which produces a .mov file.
I have normally used the Master File to export my videos but will experiment in future with "Computer".
I've taken a closer look with VideoSpec and notice that the data rate of the .mov file is about 70% of the .mp4 and the file size is correspondingly smaller.
The export/render time of the .mov is also somewhat quicker.

  • I need help.  Is exported deinterlaced mp4 or QT video possible?

I've tried everything I can think of but I can't get iMovieHD 6 to export non-interlaced mp4 or QT video.
My camcorder is set record progressive. The video plays in iMovie as progressive. But every time I export a video clip the clip is always interlaced. I am exporting at 720x480 at 8 mbits/sec and I don't about the file size as long as it isn't straight DV.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Hmm...how can progressive footage be converted to interlaced?!
It is possible with the right software. You take a quality hit, but it is possible.
I am having the same problem. I have 1080i footage and it will not deinterlace. The option may as well not be there, because it has no effect on the output.
I am going to check out this MPEG Streamclip program you speak of. It is only going to be useful if it can spit out at least a 720p file out the other end, otherwise iMovie will have to convert it. Now you have a video that is not even edited yet and it is a 3rd generation render. Further more. This initial video I edited is 25 minutes long. I rendered it out to 1280x768 and it took my MacBook 4.5 hours to render, single pass!
Thankfully I do not actually own a highdef camcorder. This is footage from a friend I am editing. Come on Apple! I am not going to spend hundreds on a Pro app to get de-interlaced 1080i anyway so come and fix this!

having trouble choosing mp4 as export format

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 10 running on and does that computer use a NVIDIA GeForce video card/graphics card? Please read the Announcement at the top of this forum regarding the serious display Premiere Elements 10/NVIDIA Ge Force issue. The full description of the problem and the how to fix are there...the solution is rolling back the driver version to May 2013. This may not be possible if your computer operating system is Windows 8 or 8.1 64 bit. If that matter does not apply to you, then please read on.
Do you know the export routes for .mp4 exports and are having problems getting the export to go to a successful conclusion, or is it that you do not know the export routes for a file with a ..mp4 file extension. If problems in getting the export to go to completion, then please give full details of your export settings, source media, project settings.
Remember, .mp4 is just a file extension (wrapper format for the file's video and audio compression). So, depending on your requirements, you may have to consider video and audio compression as well as file extension in your decisions.
    As for the routes...
    1. Share/Computer/AVCHD and one of the .mp4 preset choices
    2. Share/Mobile Phones and Players/Apple iPod, iPad, and iPhone/ and one of the Presets choices
If you need help with the settings, please give us more details of your project, and we will post suggested settings.
We will be watching for your follow up in the morning.

  • Extremely long Master File Sharing/Export times (MP4)

I, too, it seems, am having extremely long Sharing times with my FCP X project(s).  It's a one hour, 50 minute HD video.   Nothing fancy, just a couple talking heads comprised of 7  .mov files and appx. 65 graphics and black generators as B-Roll.  When I share it to a Master File as an MP4 video it takes nearly 36 hours to complete.
The Transcoding takes more than 8 hours before it gets to the export phase.  I have "Create Optimized Media" and "Create Proxy Media"checked in the FCP X Prefs and have Background Rendering switched off, FWIW.
I have a 13" MacBook Pro (mid 2012) 8GB RAM, 1TB HD and running 10.9.2.  I don't know if it makes a difference but I have Perian and Flip4Mac installed.
Activity Monitor shows that I'm using 6.34GB physical memory and 10.5GB Virtual Memory.  The Memory Pressure graph is green.  Activity Monitor shows these processes: a kernel task of 750MB, FCP using 600MB and ProTranscoder Tool using 286MB.
I've shared copies of this same video to YouTube and it took about just as long but it shared successfully.
I was just wondering if there was any way to cut down on the rendering time - which, based on what I've seen in the discussions may not really be possible on a 2-hour video.  I will have another video in a week or so to finish and it's the same length.  Also, I may have a couple more projects in the future (if the client likes these) that will be similar.  My goal is to not have to wait days for a project export/share to be complete.  Worse, as was the case today, I decided to add one more 5-second graphic and had to re-do the entire Transcode/Export process.
I looked into getting Compressor but that doesn't seem really necessary or beneficial in my case and, based on the reviews, can actually add even MORE time to the process, it seems.
Thanks for any suggestions or pointers.  I'll continue to look through the discussions for info.
    Rick

Since I just downloaded the trial version and started this project I'm still learning as I go. At this point, I may actually end up having to purchase FCP (which I actually REALLY like - except for the hideous export times).  I used the OLD Final Cut Pro a good many years ago on a G-4 Quicksilver so this is somewhat of a re-learning experience.
When I began the project I'm trying to finish (now that I recall) I actually exported it from iMovie to FCP.  That's when I needed help using the generators because I needed to cover the 16:9 video while using a 4:3 graphic.  I began using this current version of FCP without initially setting or changing any preferences.  So, I believe the Optimize was already toggled.  I wasn't sure abut the proxy but you cleared that up for me.  Thanks!  I just made sure those two were toggled for this latest share/export because of something I read about maximizing (which I'm doing a lot of these days!).
The second program's .mov files I shot and began editing were imported directly into FCP and, again, I don't recall that I toggled the Optimize option.  I know I was sure to copy both programs' files to their project and not keep them in place (avoiding potential file issues).  I also exported that second, similar, video at one point (probably because of the issues with the first program) and it, too, took a comparable amount of time to export.  It is an hour and fifteen munutes long.
Since my MBP is new, I got the (what I assumed to be)was the maximum RAM. I've since learned you can (expensively) actually upgrade it to 16GB.  I'll opt for a SSD first, tho ;-)
When I get a chance after I'm finished with this current export ( which occur tomorrow sometime :-/ ) I'll try the Pro Res export and then try the MPEG Streamclip (which I have and use frequently) option.
I'm using a new Toshiba Canvio 3.0 Plus external 1.5TB (non-Thunderbolt) drive formatted Extended/Journaled/GUID partition to store my project and actually did quit FCP and restarted the MBP prior to beginning this export with no browsers running.
And, fwiw, at 6:30pm EST the project is 44% of the way through the Transcoding process.
Thanks for your help and time.
