External iTunes hard drives hang up...

     I've been working this problem for months, and I'm stumped. Hoping one of you might be able to help. (Lots of detail here)
     I use a mid-2011 27" iMac
     8GB DDR3 RAM
     OS 10.8.3
     iTunes 11.0.2
     I use twin Lacie d2 Quadra 3TB hard drives. One of these stores my iTunes library containing about 2.5GB of music, movies and other media to which iTunes is directed. The second Lacie is a clone of the first, created with a regularly-scheduled backup action done by SuperDuper!. The backup is scheduled during the early morning hours while we sleep, 3X a week. The iMac's on-board hard drive is half-full.
     I originally used these external hard drives daisy-chained via FW800, then attempted to use them each connected to the USB ports individually, and finally tried using them with one connected to FW800, and the other connected to Thunderbolt with the FW-Thunderbolt adapter. The problem persists.
     Here's the problem. When I leave the system on in order to do Home Sharing to my two AppleTVS in the house, iTunes crashes (after inconsistent time periods). I have to force quit iTunes (iTunes not responding), and the hard drives will not eject. I am forced to turn them off before the Mac will logout, restart, … anything. As soon as I turn off the power to both hard drives, the Mac loosens up and I can get moving again. Soooo... I'm always having to shut down HDs, logout or restart (because iTunes ends up locked out), then turn the drives back on and start iTunes so I can watch a movie on the AppleTV.
I have told my Mac not to sleep. (I do this so the family can access media while I'm at work). I do sleep the display when I depart.
I have gone to Energy Saver and deselected "Put Hard Drives to Sleep" (it keeps resetting to being checked whenever I restart of logout/login)
I have shut down one of the hard drives and "used" the iTunes library on the other alone, just to see if one of them was corrupted in some way. The issue occurs no matter which HD I designate and use.
I have run Disk Warrior on my startup drive and each of the externals. No problems.
I have used Disk Utility on all to verify/repair. No issues.
I thought the problem was one of the hard drives, but it happens to both.
I thought the problem might be a cable or FW bus, but it happens with whatever connectivity choice.
I thought it was iTunes, but it works fine for a couple hours prior to problems. I can watch a movie, but once it's complete and I navigate the AppleTV to another media product, I have to restart the whole process at the iMac again to watch another.
     At this point, I have no idea where to even look for a problem to fix. I suppose there might be corrupted file in the library, but going through 2.5GB of media looking for one would be a nightmare. I considered attempting to re-write the iTunes library database, but I'm a little concerned I'll lose a lot of the organizational work I've done in the library (TV show seasons, movie artwork, etc.)
     I'd appreciate anything you might be able to suggest. Thanks, gang.

I have a similar problem. My external HD connected to the USB port of the TC can be accessed as a sharepoint as "guest" using my Ethernet connected iMac OK but when attempting to see either the TC or the attached HD on my LAN with Windows XP computers they no longer show either the TC or the USB HD under "internet places". Before changing to Snow Leopard the Windows computers could access the TC and HD just fine. Nothing else has changed. The wireless internet connection or wireless printing using the Windows computers still work OK. I don't know whether the problem likely is with Snow Leopard or some automatic update to the Windows computers.

If you want to transfer your complete iTunes library to a new computer preserving all your playlists and library information, but without using your iPod as a hard dive, or without burning a CD or DVD, you can do it by using an USB external hard drive following these easy steps:
1) Quit iTunes
2) Connect your USB external hard drive to your computer and acccess it thru My PC or Windows Explorer.
3) Create two new folders in your external hard drive (you can name them LIBRARY Backup and PLAYLISTS Backup).
4) Open the LIBRARY Backup folder.
5) Open another Windows Explorer or My PC window; open the iTunes Music folder (usually located in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My documents\My music\iTunes).
6) Copy all of its contents (only the contents, not the whole folder) to the LIBRARY Backup folder you created in your external USB Hard Drive.
7) Close both the LIBRARY Backup folder from your USB external hard drive and the iTunes Music folder.
8) Open the PLAYLISTS Backup folder from your USB external hard drive
9) From your iTunes folder, copy the iTunes Music Library.xml to the PLAYLISTS Backup folder.
10) Close all the windows and extract your USB external hard drive from your PC ()
11) Install iTunes in your new computer.
12) Using Windows Explorer open the iTunes Music folder (usually located in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My documents\My music\iTunes).
13) Connect the USB hard drive to your new computer and open it using another Windows Explorer window.
14) Open the LIBRARY Backup folder and copy all of its contents (only the contents, not the whole folder) to the iTunes Music folder in your new computer. After the copying is complete, close this folder.
15) Copy the PLAYLISTS Backup folder to you new computer’s desktop.
16) Close Windows Explorer and extract USB hard drive.
17) Open iTunes
18) From the File menu, choose Import. Navigate to the iTunes Music Library.xml file on the Desktop and click Choose. The imported playlist will show only songs located on the computer's hard disk or external media.
19) You can now delete the xml. file from your new computer’s desktop if you wish.

Moving entire iTunes library to external USB hard drive

My internal hard drive is nearly full. I need to move the entire current 10 GB iTunes library of songs, podcasts, album art, etc. to a 300 GB external USB hard drive with plenty of space. Within a few weeks I'll get a new replacement computer with a much larger internal hard drive and will want to relocate the iTunes library again onto the new machine. The iTunes Help Forum had some tips but explained "From now on, new songs & other items are stored in the new location. Songs you've already imported stay in their current location." That doesn't help. I won't be importing anything new until I've gotten my new computer and am running iTunes on it. Any help is very much appreciated.

Copy /Music/iTunes/ folder to the external.
To use this folder, hold Shift and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library*.
Select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.
Make sure the external is connected and ready before launching iTunes.
When you get your new computer, copy the entire iTunes folder from the external to /Music/ on the new computer.

How do I stream purchased movies to my Macbook Pro if I've already downloaded them and moved the source files to an external desktop hard drive and I'm away from home?

I recently added a number of movies to my iTunes library by redeeming digital copeis that came with Blu-rays. Due to limted disc space on my MacBook Pro, and for safe keeping, once I downloaded the movies, I moved the source files to an external desktop hard drive. When I'm home and I'm able to access that external HD via my home network, I'm able to watch the movies without an issue. However, if I'm away from home and I want to watch them, I'm not sure how to do that. I thought I could "stream" purchased movies from within iTunes - even after downloading them - using "iTunes in the Cloud" but can't figure out how to do that, or it simply isn't possible.
What are my options?

I understand that I can't play my downloaded movies when my external HDD is not connected becuase iTunes is looking for the downloaded files. This is not the issue. The issue is that because my HDD is not connected (as in when I'm away from home) I'd like to be able to stream the movies via the cloud.
If I hadn't downloaded the movies when I redeemed my codes, would I have been able to keep the movies online via Apple iCloud and watched them anytime by streaming them or must the movies be downloaded in order to be viewed on my MacBook? I read that Apple allows movies purchased (or redeemed) via iTunes to be stored in the cloud via Apple iCloud so that they can be viewed any time, on any device. IF this is the case, how does it work? From what I can see, it looks like movies can only be "streamed" from the cloud when useing Apple TV; on my iPhone and MacBook Pro, it looks like they need to be downloaded in order to be viewed.
Can someone clarify this for me?
Also - Michael - when you said that If I've already downloaded the film but I'm away from my external HDD I should "Delete the entry from the iTunes library so iTunes only sees the iTunes in the Cloud version", what exactly would this mean? Would this mean that I could then stream the movie from the cloud or would I have to re-download it to my Mac's internal HDD in order to watch it?

Boot in safe mode.
Log in and see whether you still have the problem. If you don't, it's caused by one of your login items or a system modification that loads at startup or login.
If the problem isn't resolved that way, other possible causes are references in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server, and bookmarks in the Preview application

IMac erase OS hard drive hangs for hours - powered off now only get a spinning cog whatever I do

I have a 27 inch 2011 iMac that I have been trying to totally wipe and reinstall the OS (Mountain Lion) by erasing it with Command + R. It has a 2TB drive in it and the problem is that at the end the erase hard drive hangs on last bit for hours on end. I (probably stupidly) held down the power button and tried doing it again.
Since then every time all that has happened is the Apple logo comes on and the cog constantly spins.
Holding the command key on startup cos spins then eventually brings up a blank screen. If I press the C key with a CD in there it starts making CD reading noises for a few minutes then does nothing - the cog just spins forever.
I am really worried that I have totally messed this thing up forever and dont want to have to start taking it apart at all if possible.

If your iMac is only booting to a gray screen or Apple logo with a "spinning gear," try these troubleshooting steps first:
Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
Note: "Peripheral devices" refers to external devices other than what came with your Mac, such as hard drives, printers, or hubs that you connect via a USB or FireWire cable.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Disconnect all peripheral devices such as external hard drives or printers (leave only the display, a keyboard, and mouse connected).
Disconnect any Ethernet cables.
Start up your Mac.
If you are using a desktop Mac with a third-party keyboard and/or mouse device, and the issue still occurs, try starting up with an Apple keyboard and mouse connected instead. Try starting with no keyboard and mouse connected, then connect them after start up. Also, try a different USB port on your Mac.
If the gray screen issue persists with no devices connected, go to the next section (with the peripherals still disconnected).
Perform a Safe Boot
Simply performing a Safe Boot may resolve this issue.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Start your Mac, then immediately hold the Shift key. This performs a Safe Boot. Advanced tip: If you want to see the status of a Safe Boot as it progresses, you can hold Shift-Command-V during start up (instead of just Shift).
Note: A Safe Boot takes longer than a typical start up because it includes a disk check and other operations.
If your Mac starts up as expected, immediately try restarting.
If the Safe Boot does not work, or the restart after a successful Safe Boot does not work, go to the next section.
Reset the NVRAM / PRAM
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.

Unable to eject external USB hard drive

I've been using a 500 gb WD Passport external USB hard drive for about six months now, and recently it's had trouble ejecting. I'm not sure if it's the drive itself or my OS; sometimes I can eject it, other times I get the "the disk __ wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it.".
There are NO programs using the drive, and no users connected to the drive from elsewhere. Is there some process in the activity monitor that may be preventing the disk from unmounting?
I've tried to log out, relaunch the finder, quite all programs, etc - but the only sure fire method is to restart the computer - which leads me to believe there is some underlying system process that is causing the eject sequence to hang...
Any ideas? Will I potentially harm my disk's contents by force ejecting every time (so long as I'm certain no programs are writing files)?

I'm aslo having problems with a USB drive. In this case it's my Time Machine drive. Similar symptom that the only way to eject it is to restart the computer. Otherwise I get the same message. I also tried the Terminal command with the drag/return. What showed was an empty command line:

Now, the reason why I've even tried to do this is because I'm having problems backing up withTime Machine. Upon boot up, the first backup always works, but typically any subsequent b/up will fail with the following error code:

USB Hard drive hangs KT4V Mainboard

Hi,
I am wondering if anyone else is having USB 2.0 problems with MSI KT4V Mainboards?
I am getting system hangs when an external (Acom Data) USB 2.0 hard drive is connected to the following:
MSI KT4V-L KT400 Mainboard
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
512MB PC3200 400 MHz DDR Memory
60 GB internal IDE hard drive
60GB External ACom Data USB 2.0 hard drive
Windows XP Pro
I have already updated every driver, bios, etc.. via the MSI Live Update 2 util. This is a brand new system. Any help is appreciated.

wonkanoby - Yes, the external HD has its own powersupply. It was connected to an external powered hub, but I connected it directly to the mainboard... same hang results.
I have "legacy support" turned on in the bios. There are no hardware conflicts in the device manager.
I really think that this mainboard is either bad or the KT4V has problems with external USB hard drives. It only hangs when I have the hard drive connected. I have other USB devices connected and I don't have any problems. The drive is about 3 months old and was used on the previous mainboard (MSI 6380E KT333 w/AMD XP 1600+) on a USB 2.0 PCI card with no problems.
I have now put in the USB 2.0 PCI card on the KT4V mainboard and disabled the built in USB 2.0 ports. I will see if my luck is any better. If this works, the KT4V is definately going back.

How to use AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only?

I have a new AirPort Time Capsule 3TB, now I want to use my AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only, how do I it?
I would like to connect the AirPort Time Capsule 2TB directly to my Mac Pro. using OS X 10.7.5.
I have erase disk and reset the 2TB to factory default, after that, I cannot make it to connect to my Mac. Please help.

The 2TB Time Capsule needs to connect to your 3TB Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
Connect from a LAN <--> port on the 3 TB Time Capsule to the WAN "O" port on the 2 TB Time Capsule and configure the 2TB Time Capsule in Bridge Mode and turn off the wireless function on the device as well.
Once that is done, you can connect your Mac directly to the 2TB Time Capsule using another Ethernet cable, or your Mac can connect to the network using the normal wireless network, if you prefer.

Want to use my iPad (4th gen) to edit a movie using iMovie - easy enough if the movie file is on the iPad - but what if it's too large - can I keep the source file on a USB stick or external USB hard drive and edit from there? How can you do this?

You can't export any type of file using the camera connection kit, so a USB flash drive or SD card won't work.
There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.

External USB hard drive not being recognized

Hello! I'm sure this has been posted before, but excuse my naivety with this sort of thing...
I have a mac mini 10.5.6 (1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) and I run the Time Machine function to an external usb hard drive. The hard drive worked fine (plugged into the usb port on an older keyboard), but I went out and bought a new aluminum apple keyboard (because they look so cool ^_^ ) - I plugged the external usb drive into the keyboard and it wasn't recognized, so I tried plugging the external drive directly into the mac mini, but it is still not recognized. It is not showing up in Disk Utility or in System Profiler
Help? I'd hate to have to give up this fancy keyboard...

I believe I had my external drive plugged into the (old) keyboard because with the old mac that I had didn't have a free usb port for it - so when I got the mini I just plugged things back in where they were. But I have always had the Time Machine back up to this drive (connected to the keyboard) though it has been slow (another reason I thought the new keyboard was a good idea).
I tried restarting the computer without the alu keyboard plugged in, but same problem of no drive showing up.

My friend attached her external USB hard drive to my Mac. She didn't know that she was supposed to eject her drive before pulling the USB cord.
Now, she can't see any of her files when she attaches her drive to her Windows XP machine. She's very upset; this drive has years worth of files, including some wonderful photos from a workshop we both went to.
I was able to attach the drive to a Linux computer, and I can see file and directory names. I wasn't able to change into any of the directories, though.
When we attach it to a Windows machine, the drive looks completely blank, and Windows asks if we want to format it.
What should we do?

if the drive is still visible on your computer, copy everything to your HD and burn a CD or DVD with the data. Then you can reformat the flashdrive and copy the data back onto it.
Obviously you have learned the lesson of never disconnecting a drive without first ejecting it.
I have two flashdrives that I use on my MBPs and my PCs and it has never lost any data, but even a flashdrive should regularly be backed up onto something more permanent.
Your friend obviously has been yanking the flashdrive out of her PC without ejecting it and that's a no-no also. There's an icon in the Windows taskbar on the lower right that is used to eject any portable hardware, from flashdrives to cameras, to whatever. Let her know that it is very important to properly eject the drive, no matter what computer it is on.

2.5" external USB hard drive not recognized by my iMac

I have a small 2.5" external USB hard drive that my intel iMac will not mount or see. My 12" G4 Powerbook sees it fine and it is formatted in Mac OS Extended. My iMac is bootcamped and XP on my iMac sees the drive but not OS X Tiger on the iMac, (wierd) I have Tiger on both my Macs too.
Why does the intel based OS X refuse to see this external 2.5 HD. It sees a 3.5" USB one I have but not the small one. I know it is software.

i then tried connecting the drive to each USB port again, and voila! i have found one it works in. I guess my computer's ports must be a little worn.
Hmm well try looking inside and see if there's some smutz in there, if the contacts are dirty or bent or worn.
i was starting to think i would have to go out and get a USB hub to give it some more power.
Is it powered off the USB? If so that actually might be a good idea since that puts a lot of strain on the connectors. Even if it's self powered it might be a good idea since it would take the strain off an obviously flakey USB.

External USB Hard Drive not showing up on Time Capsule

Hi all,
I have a 500 Gb Time Capsule that used to be able to detect my external USB hard drives. I had to store my things for a while and have just started using the Time Capsule again. The TC works fine, however, the same USB external hard drives I used to connect to the TC are not showing up anymore :s They show up on the desktop when I connect them directly to my MacBook via USB. I have been through most of the file sharing options in Airport Utility and System Preferences but have not been able to solve this. I can't think of any settings that would have changed from when they were showing up in the past. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx

yosemite won't work with ntfs drives for some reason, i've had the same issue with my toshiba. i thought ok lemme buy another one, and transfer it over maybe it's a driver issue which i've tried over and over, apple support can't figure it out.
here's a simple fix, but the problem is i have an external where all my photography and video files are stored, so i can't access them right now and it's making my life ****.

that does work and make the drive mountable now, but problem being i can't obviously reformat the old drive and lose everything. once the new drive is formatted for mac i can't plug it into a pc to transfer the files from. which is the only problem now. but formatting the drive for mac only DOES work. but you're just screwed and not able to use it ntfs. hope the link helps SOME people.
