Extremely large captivate project files

Hi there,
So we recently hit a problem with Captivate, we use both english and arabic for our courses and one of our projects is about 27 slides (including 7 question slides) and the final captivate file size for the arabic course (not published) is about 1GB, however the english course is a mere 120mb using the same material, only difference is in the text.
I just tried deleting all the slides and selecing all unused data and deleted them for the project hirearchy, but I ran into another problem which is that the project file dropped 20mb in total and its still close to 1GB.
I would also like to add that the published release for the arabic course was around 80mb.
Adobe Captivate Version :  7.0.1.237
Any ideas? let me know if more information is required..
Thank you!

Holy cow!! Adobe has a 3rd level of support? Cool. Only
partially kidding ... I really didn't know you could access various
levels. Is the 3rd level where you get to talk to the actual
engineers? Just wondered ...
Joel, in my experience it is often helpful to go to the most
basic approach in trying to isolate a problem. For instance, you
can eliminate the PPT being the cause of the problem by creating
another to try importing.
You can eliminate computer resources (on your own machine) by
importing a tiny, tiny PPT file and work up to a larger one.
And finally (for now), have you tried to use Power Point's "
File > Page Setup" to reduce the footprint (size) of the
PPT you are trying to import into Captivate?
This has been known to help, and at one time years ago I even
had a formula of sorts to get the size of the PPT to compliment the
size of the Captivate stage (slide). Sadly, I can't find that now,
but I would think you should keep the aspect ratio (AR) the same,
and that should help.
For instance, if the Captivate project is 800x600 (pixels),
the aspect ratio is 4:3 (as it is for the standard computer
monitor). Therefore you would want to set up your Power Point
project with that same AR so that the import process is not forced
to change AR, or to crop the imported images.
Hope there is something of value in there for you. When you
get up to that level of help where you are talking to the President
of Adobe, could you drop my name ... every little bit helps.
Have a very nice day JoelStern!!

  • Captivate Project File Backward Compatibility

I tried searching online, as well as in the forums, but I wasn’t able to find a similar scenario where Captivate 6 can open/work with/convert old Captivate 1 .cp project files.
We have an old version of Captivate (Macromedia version 1.01.1418.1418) and we already have created a number of .cp files.
System specs where Captivate 1 is installed:
    Windows XP Professional 2002 (32-bit), SP3,Intel Core 2 Duo, P8400 @2.26GHz, 1.98Gb RAM
System specs where Captivate 6 (Trial Version) is installed:
    Windows 7 Enterprise 2009 (64-bit), SP1, Intel Core 2 Duo, E8400 @3.00GHz, 2.00Gb RAM
We tried to open it with the trial version of Captivate 6 but the file won’t open. Files opened were already saved locally. The following notification appears:
We already checked that no other application is accessing the said file while it is being opened in Captivate 6.
Is there a way to convert the file so that it can be opened in Captivate 6?
We already have a purchase of new licenses for Captivate 6 in the works. We just want to confirm this early if there’s a way to handle the projects we created using Captivate 1. This way we could adjust resources if we need to work on the .cp projects we made using Captivate 1 and start from scratch using Captivate 6.
My apologies if this inquiry has already been addressed somewhere in the forum, however, I really need to find out the solution at the soonest possible time.

I suppose the only way would be to try to find some versions between CP1 and CP6 and try to upgrade in steps. There has been so many changes since that version, and it is clearly told that you cannot upgrade that far backwards. Not even sure if you could upgrade without issues from CP1 to CP4. CP5 was a totally different version, so you should at least have to upgrade first to CP4. Even then there could be a lot of problems going from 4 to 5 and later, because AS2 is no longer supported.
However there is no problem to have both versions installed on the same system. I have CP4, 5, 5.5 and 6 installed on my laptop and they are living happily together

  • Large Captivate Project - Fix or Split (How)

Our department was tasked with developing a CBT to train our
users on Word 2007. This is our first project developed with
Captivate 3. We are almost complete with our project - it's almost
450 slides. The project has a series of slides that are used as a
menu. When the user clicks on the a topic (button), the project
jumps to a specific slide or topic. It's full screen 1024x768. The
    .cp file size is 260MB.
When we publish our .cp file to a .exe standanlone, we
    encounter two types of errors.
The first error involves several slides with the wrong audio.
We fix this by exporting then importing then exporting the audio on
the problems slides. This is frustrating, but it fixes the problem.
The second error involves on the "menu" slides. When certain
topics (buttons) are clicked, the screen is white for approximately
30-seconds. Finally the slide after the correct (desired) slide
displays. We've tried copying the slides to a new project and
republishing among other things without success.
We've considered breaking-up the project. For example, each
topic would be its own .exe or .swf. How is this accomplished
without Active X warnings, etc? If we had to split the project, we
would like to publish the menu project (15-slides) as full screen
.exe with each button in the menu project calling a full-screen
.exe or .swf THAT DOES NOT OPEN IN A BROWSER.
Any help/advice is appreciated. Thanks, Jeremy.

Hi Jeremy and welcome to our community
Uhhh, 450 slides is just a fuzz over what we normally
consider to be a very broad and general upper limit. Only by about
    400 slides or so.
You would be well advised to split this up before your
project corrupts on you and you have to start totally over. Yes,
you heard that correctly. I said "Start totally over". Because once
your project gets corrupted, there is no recovery unless you have a
backup of the CP file handy.
If you are publishing to .EXE, you may be disappointed to
find that as one segment of the .EXE ends, it closes and there is a
pause as the next .EXE in the sequence opens.

    larger projects.

  • Extremely large jpg exported files - help!

I was previously loving LR3 - used the trial for a month, decided to buy it - had really no problems.  The big issue for me is now the jpg export file sizes that are being created.  I run all my photos through the develop module to adjust the basics as well as draw in masks, and previously I had no trouble exporting the files as jpg, with the limit of size at 600kb and resized to 960x640 (original photos from 5Dmk2 RAW).
Then I bought the license.  From then on it seems that now whenever I do the same exact export it doesn't work!  I also used to use the output quality slider and set that at 100% and would get around the same file sizes, but now I'm getting files 2-3x the size of the previous exports.  All of the photos have minimal metadata (10 keywords or so, that's it) and the same metadata was present in the exports in the trial version.
Playing around with more export parameters and reading around on this forum led me to try and minimize exif data - this didn't even work - files could not meet the requirements or they still ended up 2-3x the size they used to be.
The interesting part is that when I would delete all development history and set the file back to the original pre-edited RAW and export there would be no problems!
Could it be possible that LR is adding the development data into the metadata that it is attaching to the photo??
This has completely shut down my photo workflow and really is making me regret buying this otherwise wonderful tool.

What I can see in the image is that it contains about (uncompressed) 750KB of XMP data, the major part of it relating to some "PaintCorrection" as follows:

This data results from heavy use of the local adjustment brush. Choosing "Minimize Embedded Metadata" upon export really should solve this problem for you. Please try again specifying this option.
But then, by doing so, you lose any other metadata (keywords etc.) also. To have complete control on what metadata gets written into the JPEG upon export, you could use Jeffrey’s “Metadata Wrangler” Lightroom Plugin.
I noticed one strange thing within the XMP data in your JPEG:
The data seems to be formatted differently than what I see with JPEGs I export ("HasExtendedXMP"), which I don't know where it comes from.
For further investigation, would it be possible for you to upload the Raw file and the XMP file belonging to it to somewhere (e.g. www.yousendit.com) and post a link to it here?

  • How can I create a new skin (other than the default skins) for my Captivate Project?

    Hi everyone,
I am working on a project where my client wants me to create a player skin which is completely different from the default themes that captivate has already. The design which client has shared with me contains in this way:
    1. TOC - should be truncated and can be expanded by pressing "+" button against the Navigation Text. Its like opening and closing the menu bar using + and - buttons
    2. Playback controls required by him are also not in the default skins.
I dont know, if there is any way to customize the skins to this level inside captivate.
    Please help me out.
    Thanks & Regards
    Vikas Sharma

    Unlikely, I'm afraid.
The LMS has no control over the playbar that pauses or plays the Captivate content.
In a Multi SCORM package, the LMS also may be showing a TOC in the SCORM player with links to launch the lesson modules.  This TOC is in addition to the TOC inside the Captivate project file which gives access to sections of the module by jumping to slides that begin those sections.  But the LMS doesn't usually give you any control over the look and feel or functionality of that TOC either.
If your client is adamant that they want complete control over these areas, then your best option may be NOT to build this course with Captivate but build it from the ground up with another tool.  E.g. Flash, or Dreamweaver.  Either way, that will add a lot more time and expense to the project.  But if the client has the budget and is unwilling to budge on their requirement, then that's what I would be telling them to do.

  • Can A YouTube Video Link/Code Be Added In A Captivate Project?

    Hello,
Can I add a video embed code or link to a Captivate project (rather than the actual video file itself) when making an swf project? How do I do it?
    Thanks,
    Paul.

    Hi Paul
I think we need a wee bit more information here.
If you are using Captivate 4, I believe there is a widget that may be used to embed a YouTube video in a Captivate project. That appears to be the first thing you asked.
But the way you phrased the question, you could have also been asking about a way to create a link to a Captivate Project file (the CP file).
Can you describe exactly what it is you want to see in the end result? Just be basic. I want to click a button, see a slide that does this. And describe what this is.

  • MS Project 2003 Pro - Link task from other Project files

Starting yesterday I wanted to find a way to link a task in one Project File to a task in another Project File. The idea being I have a Site Development Project File, and wanted a certain task in that schedule to drive tasks in individual House Development
Project Files so we wouldn't need to use one large cumbersome Project File for the entire Development. So like other users I've read about I tried copy task and paste special into an existing task cell, a predecessor of other tasks, which of course resulted
in the "OLE Paste operation cannot be completed" error. So as a test I saved two Project files, Project1 and Project2. I then tried to "Paste Special" into a "New Task" row, which was instead empty and found that would work without
the OLE error, except the linked task's Predecessor copied with the linked task so it's predecessor was now that numbered task within Project2 which I didn't want. So looking at Project1 since I set them both up as one parent task with five subtasks for simplicity,
I copied the parent task from Project1 (no predecessor) into a blank Insert / New Task row in Project2, then made the linked task a predecessor to the next task below and voila! Viewing the two Project Files in Window / Arrange All, when the duration of one
of the Subtasks in Project1 is adjusted, it drives the overall duration in Project2 just like I wanted. So while most of you may already know this trick, as I could not find much information on doing this (somewhere they suggested "Insert Project",
which did work but was not what I wanted), I thought I'd still share this in case it helps someone else. You just need to copy a parent task with no predecessor, paste special into a blank New Task row then make that the appropriate predecessor in the pasted
    Project File. Cool!

    J.L.Fitzpatrick,
I second the strong caution on the use of paste links in Project as indicated by Guillaume. It is the same as playing with fire and it sounds like you already got burned. Paste links do work but they are NOT for the casual user and their use requires the
upmost in file creation expertise and file management discipline.
Let me highlight a couple of things I think I understood in your description. First, it sounds like you were paste linking the whole task link. Paste links on individual field cells are tenuous enough but doing a whole line will only result in disaster.
Second, it sounds like you were trying to paste link into a summary line. That is equally a really bad idea. With that construct I can virtually guarantee file corruption.
I can understand why Insert Project did not meet your needs. You are trying to link a single task in one file with another. That is achieved with a cross-project link (i.e. external predecessor/successor). Insert Project is exactly what it says, the WHOLE
project is inserted, not just a single task. So Insert Project and cross-project links are NOT the same thing.
Bottom line. What you want is a single cross-project link. Even then you still open the door to potential file corruption. Once you have that link established, never move, rename, or save to a different location. Ideally both files should be in the same
folder on a local drive, not on a shared network.

  • Aggregator seems to randomize quize questions from various project files

    I am using Captivate 5.5.
I created 10 quizzes, each in its own captivate project.  Each project has its own quiz ID and the question slides are randomized using one pool.   'when I publish each captivate project file, the quzi (swf file) the questions are fine.
However, when I aggregate all 10 files into an aggregate project, I get quiz questions from different project files...and the title slide doesn't even match the master slide for that quiz!  For example, after aggregating the project file, my Ch 2 quiz would contain question slides from various chapters...and the
the title slide doesn't even match the chapter for that question.

When you use Question Pools, the SWF files for the pools are external to the SWF.  The filenames for the question pools are taken from whatever you called the pool, with the letters _CQP on the end.
When you use Aggregator, all of the SWF files for each aggregated project file are placed in the same folder.  Each project is not kept isolated in it's own folder.
So if any of your question pools happen to have the same name, they may overwrite one another when Aggregator compiles them into the same folder.
Go back into your projects and make sure you first give each published project file a unique name.  Then append the name of each question pool with some extra letters that differentiate it from a similar pool in any of the other projects.  Then republish everything again and build another Aggregated version from scratch.  See if that resolves the issue.

  • Redistributing Large Amounts of Media to Different Project Files

    Hello
I'm working on a WWI documentary that requires an extremely large amount of Media. I was just wondering, if (besides exporting hundreds of QT files), perhaps just capturing all of this media, (spread out), into several FCP Project Files?
In the screen shot below, note that there are 2 FCP projects open at one time. Why? Because I thought it might help re-distrtibuting all the captured media into more than just one FCP Project file. Is this advisable? Would creating more FCP files containing more and media actually be better than capturing soooo many captured archival clips into just one main FCP Project file?
    Or
Should I be exporting 'Non-Self Contained' files to be re-imported back into the Project?
    Screen Shot;
    http://www.locationstudio.net/Redistribute-1.jpg
    Thanx
    Mike

It is absolutely advisable. This keeps project sizes down to manageable levels. This is one of the tips I give in my tutorial DVD on Getting Organized with Final Cut Pro.
Bear in mind, that if your footage and sequences are in different projects, you cannot match back to the clip in the Browser. Once a clip is cut into a sequence that resides in a different project, the link from that media and the original clip in it's original project is broken. That can be a pain, so I try not to break up projects unless I have to. And LARGE projects I find that I have to.
ALthough it can still be a pain. When you need to find the footage that you know is in the same bin as that clip...and you don't know what that bin is? Sorry...match back doesn't work. So, just a caviat.

  • BUG: Extremely Large files 'hang' saving in CS6

We occassionally work with extremely large .PSB files for billboards and environmental graphics, anywhere from 5-10GBs.  We noticed that the files would 'hang' and not save while we were working on them.  The save percentage indicator would get to 83% and just stall out.  We'd have to completely restart our machines and use CS5 to finish the projects.
    Hope this helps.  Thanks--CP

Pete, someone else reported something like this a week or two ago, I'm sure of seeing it.
    Chris,
Have you left one saving for a very long time?
What happens if you disable compression in Preferences - File Handling?  Do you find the file completes the save?

  • Large captivate file crashes during preview

    Hi,
I have a very large training -- 600 or so slides -- that I created in Captivate 6.  It is mostly made up of Power Point slides and demo videos. When I preview it using f8, it crashes at several points in the training, and always at the same spots.  When I preview using F10, it doesn't have this problem.  Luckily, the published version doesnt seem to crash, but I would like to preview the project with having to publish it.
Let me know if you can help..
    Thank you!

  • Can Captivate 4 project files be opened in Captivate 5?

I was wondering if captivate 4 project files can be opened in captivate 5? I know captivate 2 project files cannot.
    Thanks guys,
    Kya.

Hello and welcome on the forum (see it is your first posting),
Normally there are no issues when opening CP4-files in CP5: they will be converted, including the advanced actions (if there are) and to AS3 if the CP4 was AS2 because CP5 only supports AS2. I only had some few issues with those convertions.
Beware: you will not be able to open the converted file in CP4 anymore. As always, be careful to keep the original files stored safely somewhere.

  • Project files being overwritten in Captivate 5

When we create a new project in Captivate 5 and save it we do the following:  "File", "Save As" and choose our preferred location which happens to be a folder on the local desktop.  The next project we create and save we go through the same process but, of course, change the name of the file.  The problem we are having is that it overwrites the previous file and we never end up with more than one captivate file in that folder at a time.  The previous files are overwritten and gone.  Is there a setting that I am unaware of that is causing this or do I need to open a support ticket?  Anyone encounter this previously?

In my first days of playing around with CP5 I lost all files in a folder into which I saved the CP5 project (I had to restore all of them from a backup that I -thanks god- created just before that).
Then I created a separate folder dedicated only for CP5 project files and published files. Since then no files have been lost - but I don't know the reason why.
So I'm also very interested in some detailed information on when files are deleted from the target folders by saving or publishing CP5 projects.

  • Are Adobe Captivate swf files not compatible with IE8 or IE9 when inserted into RoboHelp projects?

    Hi,
I've published Adobe Captivate swf files and then inserted them into my RoboHelp project. I then synced my RoboHelp project with our website and the videos within online help are not functioning in IE8 or IE9. They are only working in IE11.
    Thanks,

    Hi there
When a SWF plays in IE, it uses the Flash Player ActiveX control. I'm not 100% sure that different versions of IE would share the install. So if you have one version of IE on your machine, perhaps it either doesn't even have the control added in or it's the wrong version.
One thing I would check in the browsers where the content seems to be missing is to right-click the blank area and see if you coax a Flash pop similar to below:
    Then note the version number.
You may find that all that you (or others) need to do is ensure you have at least a specific version of the player/add-in installed.

  • Project file size bloats (Captivate 3)

Does anyone know what causes a project file to become disproportionately bloated? I was working on a file that was approx 200 MB, then imported some objects onto one slide from another project, and suddenly it jumped to over 300 MB (I even deleted all items in the library that weren't being used elsewhere).
I've noticed this phenomenon on more than one occassion. It seems to occur most frequently when importing objects or slides from one project to another.

    Hi there
The only way that I've ever seen a file size reduction in Captivate 3 was by performing the following steps:
Open a second instance of Captivate.
Create a new blank project sized identically to the other instance.
Switching between instances, copy slides from the bloated one and paste into the fresh one.
Save the new one and the file size is reduced.
    Discard the old one.
Note that you will likely need to re-establish any links you had.
Just a special note here about one of the things you tried. You said you exported to XML. I don't believe you are able to export to XML, then import from XML back into a new project. I believe the XML export works in a very similar manner to the Microsoft Word export. Only the project that exported it will be able to successfully re-import it. As I understand it, the XML export is especially designed for Captivate developers that need to localize (translate) their projects.
