F11/F12 Volume Graphic Working, Not Controlling Actual Volume

First, I'm on a brand spanking new, few week old 2014 15" Retina.
I can press my F11/F12 volume buttons all day long, and even watch the graphic move each volume block left and right accordingly, but it isn't corresponding with the actual volume. The volume stays untouched, not getting louder or soft. I have the proper output source selected.
Tried a PRAM reset and rebooted several times.
I work in music, so most of the day I'm plugged into an Apogee Duet audio interface and using that as my audio output source. I've updated to their Yosemite-approved driver, but am still having some troubles with the interface (F11/F12 volume control delay, sometimes not controlling at all), so I'm wondering if there is a correlation between those issues and this.
Any thoughts?

Does the machine produce a feedback sound when you press the volume-up/down button?
No - no feedback or any sound at all.
Does it work when you change the volume on the sound control panel?
And by "sound control panel", what exactly are you referring to? The speaker icon I have on my apple menu up top near the clock, battery and such? Or the volume slider under "sound" in system preferences?
Here is a more specific breakdown that might show the issue I am having a little more clearly:
I currently have my internal speakers selected as my device for sound output. I am playing a track in iTunes.
I am starting with what I know works - the volume slider under "sound" in system preferences. This properly and completely controls my volume up and down + mutes the sound when I check the mute box. I'm now going to keep that volume slider about half way with the track continuing to play.
Now, when I try to turn up/down my volume via F11/F12, the speaker icon pops up and the volume blocks visually change accordingly. However, the actual audible volume does nothing at all. It stays exactly the same. However, if I decrease the volume all the way to value 0, it does mute the sound. It just doesn't do anything else otherwise.
When I try to turn up/down my volume via the speaker icon on the top apple menu bar, it does nothing to change the volume either, until I hit value 0, at which point it mutes the sound.
So both F11/F12 and the speaker icon on the apple menu bar are both functioning, or should I say malfunctioning, in the same manner. Both will mute when at 0, but once past that point, the volume stays where it was previously at (which I can only set via "sound" in system preferences) no matter how I adjust the volume.
Sorry if I over-explained that. Just have no clue what is going on.

  • How to restore entire external volume that is NOT a system volume?

    Howdy,
I just had my music HD die. Disk Warrior even tells be that it is trashed. Thankfully it is backed up on Time Machine, but I am not clear on how to restore a totally new volume that is NOT a system volume. I see plenty of advice on the forums about system volumes.
I will most likely have to get another HD, but I can't, via Time Machine go into that new one and hit the restore button can I? So how do I restore an ENTIRE backed up volume in Time Machine to a new volume?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    iPhotoStuff 2,
Creating a same-named volume is the key. Time Machine sees "resident" volumes according to their name (it identifies the actual backup volume a bit differently).
This volume need not be an entire drive; it could be a discreet partition on said drive. Just make sure that it is large enough to accommodate all of your iTunes data, and that it has the same name as the old volume that previously contained that data.
Mount the new same-named volume, then connect the Time Machine backup drive (if it is not already). Using the Finder, navigate to the "root" of the new same-named volume, then click the Time Machine icon in the Dock. Navigate back to the most recent backup (if that is the one you wish to restore), then press Command-A to "select all." Finally, click "Restore," and Time Machine will handle the rest.
Drag & drop in the Finder will work just as well, if you are restoring to a folder instead of a volume. You merely navigate in the Finder into a Time Machine backup folder named with the appropriate date and time, then simply drag the files/folders you want to a new location. While this action, by itself, will not "restore" a file that might exist in a backup made 3 months ago, but not contained in the newest backups, neither would a single "Restore" from within Time Machine itself. In both cases, it will be up to you to locate and retrieve those items.

  • My screen brightness(F1,F2), Keyboard backlight(F5, F6) & volume buttons(F10, F11, F12) no longer work.

Pretty sure no major updates, installations or uninstallations have occurred since it worked last.  Under the keyboard settings, the "Use all F1, F2, etc....." is uncheck which is normal.  Keyboard settings have been reset to default with no luck on fixing the problem.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Delete the System Preferences plist per these instructions:

If that does not solve the problem, I suggest a reinstall of the OSX.

  • Volume in earpiece not working. Volume buttons work as can adjust volume and is set yo max. I haven't left the protective screen cover on.

Earpiece volume has gone very low when using iPhone. Have to switch to external speaker to hear caller, everything else is working ok. Ear phones are working fine and they are not staying registered when they are removed. Also I haven't suddenly gone deaf. Any ideas.

Snap. I'm having to restrain myself from smashing it to smithereens, such is my lack of control and anger.
The reason - this is my THIRD replacement iPod 4G 40gb, delivered on 21/5 (I have been without it for a month - unnaceptable, even coming from China, and with laser engraving). Right from kick-off it is doing this with the click wheel. I have just opened the box as my wife went into labour on the day of delivery, and this has been the first moment I've had since the arrival of our boy.
Apart from the click wheel nonsense, the hard drive sounds like a hair-dryer, and the build quality is absolutely disgusting - the white facia is mismatched significantly from the back and you could shave with it in extremis. The click wheel has a 'shadow' round the left curve and has been so badly fitted all the buttons below 'rattle'
In the seven months since initial purchase, I've been without it for two. I'm going straight on the phone to Apple in the morning to demand a refund and compensation.
I'm typing this on my Powerbook - the third incarnation. Is there no quality control in Apple's Chinese operation?

  • Rman v$recovery_file_dest does not match actual volume

I have 10gR2 base release running on Redhat Linux.
Have a small database (< 1.5G) and configured a FLASH_RECOVERY_AREA (FRA) for 2G..within a week I had this problem (database hung) fFRA got full
everynight I have a rman script running
    recover copy of database with tag.. until 'sysdate-2';
    backup increment level 1 for recover of copy with tag..database;
    delete noprompt obsolete recovery window of 3 days;
My question is this script is runing fine and actual content under FRA is maintained properly.
But Oracle's repository (v$recovery_file_dest) never shows space_reclaimed at all..space_used keeps going up..
    and in fact,
    at os_level
    du -s <<area of drive where db_recovery_area is setup>
    is showing only 2G
but select space_used from v$recovery_file_dest shows more than 3.5G
I tried crosscheck and delete expired ; delete obsolete etc
    nothing works
    any suggestions?
    Thanks

2 GB is very small size for a database of arnd 1GB. You are storing flashback logs also along with your backups and archivelogs, so check the parameter value of:
    show parameter flashback
This is the retention of your flashback logs which oracle has to maintain in FRA, so that you can flashback within this time. Try increasing space of your FRA in order to get rid of this problem or try reducing the retention but still 2GB won't be enough according to me.

  • F9, F10, F11, F12 don't work after startup

Every time i reset or reboot my mac, the four functions keys are unavailable. this really frustrates me. i lose functionality and have to tick the boxes again and again.
i run os x 10.4.8., installed no widgets, but I did install (and deleted) a screensaver application. that's it. since i also installed FCP and other software and don't have an external hard disk yet, i am somewhat frightened by using the reinstall CD's; i don't want to lose any of my other software/ files. does anybody have any ideas? my gratitude would be enormous.
there's better things to do on a sunday afternoon than trying to figure out how to remove this bug...

Something may be unbinding the "F" keys. Go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES module and select KEYBOARD & MOUSE. Open KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS and verify the settings for the "F" keys in question, modify as needed.
Next thing to do if that corrects it would be to check these settings after starting an application you suspect may be doing the changes.

  • How do I control itunes volume with my Apple Remote?

    Hey,
I have been using the Apple remote for a while now, but recently i have got a airplay device, for which the volume from the mac can be controlled only by the itunes volume slider and not the mac volume.
can someone please guide as to how i can change the itunes volume with the remote?

I don't know how to do it with the actual silver Apple Remote. However with the Remote app on you phone then the volume control is at the bottom just like normal. When you use the Airplay symbol to send the content to the airplay device say Apple TV you can use the volume slider to control the volume.

  • New Keyboard - F11/F12 no longer controlling volume

After a less-than-ideal encounter with a cup of coffee, we've had to replace our aluminum wired keyboard.  Went to the apple store, bought what appears to be the exact same keyboard, except now F11/F12 no longer control volume as it did with the old keyboard (F12 brings up dashboard).
I've searched around, and it appears that I'm not the only one to have had this problem, but none of the proposed solutions seem to be working.  Holding "fn" while hitting F11/F12 doesn't restore their old function, checking the "Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys" checkbox in System Preferences>Keyboard doesn't fix it, and I tried downloading a recommended keyboard software update and was told that the version already installed on my computer is newer.  I'm running OS X Leopard (10.5.8) which I believe is up to date.
    Any ideas?

  • IPhone 3GS - volume controls working but actual volume stays the same

    Hi
My iPhone 3GS has been exhibiting a strange phenomenon for the last couple of days. The volume in my heaphones is fixed. I can use the volume control buttons or the on screen slider just fine, they're responsive in terms of animation (the buttons show the increasing/decreasing number of white squares and the slider allows me to move the dot and the blue line extends accordingly), but the actual volume only changes when I'm using the speaker, but not when I'm using the headphones. The only actual volume control I have using the headphones is sliding the volume down to zero, which also produces a loud click in the headphones.
The issue is system-wide and as such affects all apps, including Spotify, iPod, VLC, various games and other music/video apps.
The headphones in question are brand new and work fine with other equipment. I've also tried with other headphones, with no change.
Any help would be appreciated. And yes, I've restarted the phone. I've contemplated reset/restore, but I wanted to check if anyone knows of a less time-consuming solution.
    Thanks

    No, that's not it.
The volume is not locked using the Volume limit, and even if it were, that wouldn't explain why it's fixed at one (rather loud) level. The volume limit function is just there to limit the upper bounds, not set it to a constant level.
    Thanks for your reply, though!

    Dear Barney-15E,
Your answer got me on the right track.  I followed the suggestions as well as I could.  Finally I ended up holding down the fn key as I pressed f10, f11& f12.  Each one now works as it had before something happened.
