My screen brightness(F1,F2), Keyboard backlight(F5, F6) & volume buttons(F10, F11, F12) no longer work.

Pretty sure no major updates, installations or uninstallations have occurred since it worked last.  Under the keyboard settings, the "Use all F1, F2, etc....." is uncheck which is normal.  Keyboard settings have been reset to default with no luck on fixing the problem.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Delete the System Preferences plist per these instructions:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4301
If that does not solve the problem, I suggest a reinstall of the OSX.
Ciao.

  • What is the default screen brightness setting and keyboard backlight brightness default setting, and how to you go back to default?

What is the default screen brightness setting and keyboard backlight default setting? I just got a new Macbook Air and fiddled a lot with it, and now just want to know how to set the brightness levels back to default. Thanks everyone!

    Hey sberman,
I maxed out the screen brightness before I clicked on "restore defaults" in system preferences> energy saver (which has to do with battery, not exactly screen brightness) to see if the screen went back to a "normal" brightness level, but it didn't. I don't think it restored the brightness to default..

  • New Keyboard - F11/F12 no longer controlling volume

After a less-than-ideal encounter with a cup of coffee, we've had to replace our aluminum wired keyboard.  Went to the apple store, bought what appears to be the exact same keyboard, except now F11/F12 no longer control volume as it did with the old keyboard (F12 brings up dashboard).
I've searched around, and it appears that I'm not the only one to have had this problem, but none of the proposed solutions seem to be working.  Holding "fn" while hitting F11/F12 doesn't restore their old function, checking the "Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys" checkbox in System Preferences>Keyboard doesn't fix it, and I tried downloading a recommended keyboard software update and was told that the version already installed on my computer is newer.  I'm running OS X Leopard (10.5.8) which I believe is up to date.
    Any ideas?

  • Keyboard sound keys not working (F10, F11 & F12)

I just purchased a wired keyboard for my iMac and can't seem to get my volume control keys (F10, F11 and F12) working.  I've unticked the "Use all F1, F2 etc" box within system preferences > keyboard, and still doesn't seem to work.  Previously I was running the wireless bluetooth keyboard and had no issues.  I'm sure it's something quite simple, but any suggestions would make my life much easier..

    HI,
    Do an Archive and Install.
    To reinstall Mac OS X:
Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will be the only one available).
Click Options. *If you want to save your existing files, users, and network settings, select “Archive and Install,” and then select “Preserve Users and Network Settings.”* If you want to erase everything on your computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select “Erase and Install.” You can’t recover erased data.
    Click Continue.
Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you’d like to install, or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).
If you purchased a standalone version of Mac OS X, these installation instructions are in a booklet PDF file located on the Mac OS X Install Disc.
If you need to reinstall the version of Mac OS X that was on your computer when you purchased it, or if you need to restore all the software on your computer, including Apple, bundled third-party applications, and printer drivers, review the instructions in the manual that came with your computer.
If you need to reinstall Mac OS X and you’ve been using Time Machine for backup, you can easily restore your applications, files, and user settings from your Time Machine backup file after you’ve reinstalled Mac OS X.

  • My screen brightness control buttons don't work windows 8

my screen brightness control buttons don't work?
the light in the mute button is always on when NOT on mute?
Have set up Win8 3 TIMES but get always same bug agan
    Hope someone can help

Hello smarisig. I understand you are not able to control screen brightness from the keyboard on Windows 8. By chance, did you upgrade to Windows 8 from Windows 7? I have located an online forum that contains troubleshooting on this issue: http://thedailybuggle.com/forum/unable-control-screen-brightness-windows-8-a-200.html
The person who posted the issue on this forum had upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8, and then this issue occurred. That is the reason I asked if this Windows 8 was upgraded. Regardless, follow the troubleshooting presented and it could resolve the issue for you. If not, let me know and I will continue to research the issue in the meantime. I'm only here to help!

  • Unibody Macbook display issue and keyboard backlight issues while booting

I have a 13" aluminum macbook which has been having some issues when booting up. The machine seems to be booting just fine all the way up to the log in screen. The display is normal and everything seems fine. After I log in, the various pieces of the screen start to display (desktop icons, menu bar, etc) and my wallpaper is visible. After a few seconds, the display seems to degrade and the wallpaper image is visible but distorted. It is almost as if the machine is in some sort of safe mode (pardon the windows reference).
Normally, I have my macbook connected to an external display and external mouse/keyboard. After a reboot, this issue occurs. If I put the macbook in sleep mode, and then wake it by clicking the external mouse, the display reappears normally and everything is fine.
The problem is when I am NOT connected to these external devices. The screen stays distorted (like it has lost its full color range) and there are other issues. The keyboard backlight seems to be disables and highlighting text does not work normally. I have tried rebooting, removing the battery and rebooting, resetting the SMC, removing recent applications (chrome, quicklook, etc.). Has anyone heard of or experienced this behavior?
    Thanks.

Have you called Applecare? If you sent the machine in and it came back with a cracked case, that seems like an Apple repair to me.
As for the display issue - I think I would accept it and move on. Unfortunately, with these ever-higher resolution displays, we have more dead pixels. Since no one would pay $3000 for a display with 100% no dead pixel guarantee, Apple has to alot for a few dead pixels being acceptable inorder to keep prices reasonable.

Check with other vendors, this is common practice with LCDs (even HDTVs).
I know it isn't great to hear this, but it is what it is.

  • Keyboard backlighting

Ok, I am curious, What happened to my keyboard backlight !!!
I just noticed that it stopped working, and I think this happened after I did an Update.
This problem does not appear only when the machine goes to sleep or comes back from sleep, this problem is there from the get go.
I tried the usual Disk Utilily app, restart-reboot, and this problem prevails.
Do any of you have a solution for this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

Opening the machine in and of itself doesn't void the warranty, but, if you break something while the machine is open, then you are responsible for the damage you cause. If you do not cause any damage as a result of opening your machine and noodling around in there, then your warranty would still be in effect.**
    From the one-year limited warranty:
This warranty does not apply: (a) to damage caused by use with non-Apple products; (b) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, flood, fire, earthquake or other external causes; (c) to damage caused by operating the product outside the permitted or intended uses described by Apple; (d) to damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider; (e) to a product or part that has been modified to significantly alter functionality or capability without the written permission of Apple; (f) to consumable parts, such as batteries, unless damage has occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship; or (g) if any Apple serial number has been removed or defaced

  • Solution for uneven screen brightness

My screen wasn't perfectly even in terms of brightness; the right side seemed darker than the rest. After experimenting, I discovered that setting the screen brightness to the highest for couple of hours solved this issue. Now my screen brightness is completely even! I don't know how this happens but it works!

I'm not sure either, but I know that some programs out there to solve "stuck" pixels play an intense video on your screen, changing color 30 times/second, and that is able to free the liquid which is actually stuck behind that one pixel. Also, applying pressure with a damp cloth and restarting your computer is another fix I've heard for that problem. Screen brightness, on the other hand, has to do with the lamp behind that liquid display, so I don't know how that would be affected by these things. I just realized this post didn't really make sense. Now I'm debating whether or not to hit "post." I'm really tired and I need to get my work done, but instead on here on the apple forums. Please help!

  • Is there a way to save keyboard backlight and screen brightness settings?

It seems like my settings for the keyboard backlight and screen brightness reset to some sort of default after I don't use my macair for an extended period of time.  Is there a way to change these settings so it always stays at what it was last left on?

Are you making the changes through System Preferences?  If not, try that and they should hold.

  • Screen backlight and keyboard backlight not working

Yesterday I turned on my old but proud PowerBook17" and the *screen was black*, but you could barely see everything. *Also keyboard backlight is not working.*
I read many many forums and all say that black screen caused by inverter failure, but in my case keyboard lighting is also dead, so I wonder *if this is something different* and not the inverter.
I would appreciate any advises or ideas cause I love this machine..
    Thank you in advance!

Same problem here.  I initially thought the auto-brightness problem had been fixed in 10.7.3, but sadly it hasn't. The auto-brightness works when the Mac starts, but I find it loses control and fails after wake from sleep.
I have telephoned AppleCare several times but they are not aware of this bug.  They think a PRAM reset cures it, but it doesn't.  As soon as the machine goes to sleep then auto-brightness fails on wake.
I have used the Apple Form to report the bug.  It might eventually get fixed if others would kindly report it as well please.  Here is the link:

  • Had to avoid keyboard backlighting from burning into display screen?

I recently had to replace my Mac Pro display screen because the backlighting from th keyboard burned a white streak across the middle of of the screen. I'm thankfull I purchased the additonal warranty and was able to replace it for free, but next year I will be out of luck. Just wondering if it is preventable for the future.

    Tracie,
What made you think the keyboard backlighting caused that? I don't see how it possibly could.

Some older scanners don't support presets. If this is the case, you can try this workaround as taken from this technical note Error: Bad Parameter | Acrobat.
In the Configure Presets dialog, choose the scanner attached to your computer from the Scanner pop-up menu.
From the File menu, choose Create > PDF from Scanner > Configure Presets.
In the Configure Presets dialog, click the pop-up menu to the right of the Scanner field and choose the scanner connected to your computer.
Click OK, and then choose Create > PDF From Scanner.
