Failed write of utmpx

running Solaris 8 (SPARC) on Ultra 60 WS
I get the following error when the system is going down on (init 0 and init 6)
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry: s0
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry: fb
The second character/value of the "s" and "f" changes.
Anyone know the problem/a solution ?
Thanks

Due to the above error, I can never enter the system and make any action on the system. Please advise what should I do. Otherwise, the whole system will be re-installed.
    Many thanks.

Boot your CD 1 of 2 into single user (b -s) and fsck /dev/rdsk/c0d0s0. Your root filesystem need's to be fsck'ed and you can't ( or you never should) fsck a mounted filesystem. Root is currently mounted write only.
At the "list of available boot devices" select the CDROM as the device from which to boot a Solaris kernel. At the screen where you are prompted to select 1, 2, or 3 for what type of install type you wish to do enter 'b -s' instead of a number.

  • Win2K - Infra Install - DB Config Asstn fails "write error"

I'm trying to install the 9iAS Release 2 infrastrukture on a 1.4 Ghz P4 with 1.5 gigabytes of ram and enough disk. The machine already has 9iR2 database on it.
It installs the software, but fails when it tries to run the database configuration assistant. The logfile is shown below, along with a full description of the command being run.
Win2K is very happy (nothing in the logs indicating disk errors), and the error is consistent through a number of attempts.
Did anybody see anything like this before?

    Hi
Sorry, its a complete re-build for you!!
I Had similar problems with the oracle installs where config assistants using jrew located in c:\program files... would not run.
Usually this is not a problem as they can be run outside of the installer. It seems to be a problem installer 2.x on well used Windows installations. However, it does not seem that the issue can be worked round for the 9iAS R2 Infrastructure as some of the other config assistants run and create major authentication problems. A completely fresh install of W2K Sp2 seems to be the only answer.
    Best of Luck

  • Formating Failed    Write error (0x0C, 0x00.)  ?

Dose anybody know what this means?
The recording device reported the media error: Write error (0x0C, 0x00.)
    Project is basic:
3 Menus and basic Quicktime files in the Menus.
    Any thoughts appreciated

I need to add additional info about how to burn at lower speeds. You don't need to use a 3rd party burning application like Toast. You can use Disk Utility.
When you "Format" your DVD in DVDSP, select disk image from the available burners. Then open Disk Utility, select the image from the list on the left and click the BURN icon. After inserting your media, you can set the burn speed from the drop down menu in the burn dialog. Choose something lower than the maximum available in the list. For example, using the TDK media I have, 16x is the max but I choose 6x to make sure it will work.
This works with DVDSP 4 and MacOS X 10.4 Tiger. I'm not sure if older versions will work the same.

  • Failed write to iPod

    I have the following problem with trying to download my music files from itunes to my iPod;
After the iPod has about 6.3 GB on it any further attempts to transfer songs fails - no error message shows at that time - if I click on the iPOD (within iTunes)it shows all the songs that are on the iPod up to the one that was downloading when it "stalled." If I then eject the iPOD - it shows no songs on it (on the iPod itself) and then if I reconnect iTunes reports it cannot read the iPod and says it must be restored. I have tried downloading my songs all together or in small increments but conistently this happens around 6.3 GB and not with a specific song.....
I also have tried the following:
    *The 5 R's - which for me have now become the 300 R's - using 2006-06-28 updater / iTunes - 6.0.5.20
*update all drivers (chipset, etc) on my machine
*turned off the power saving feature on the USB ports in device manager
*run Dskchk on my laptop drive
*tried down loading in small increments - restarting after each time / tried different USB ports / reinstalled itunes.
    Any suggestions?

My husband's 80GB iPod had the same problem a few months ago...turned out it was due to corrupted album artwork. Try unchecking the box "Display artwork on this iPod", close iTunes, reconnect iPod to iTunes and then recheck the box "Display album artwork on this iPod". Once I did that, the iPod loaded perfectly and no more error messages.
    Hope this helps!

  • Dr8-2a - Write speed NOT 8x and Failed writes

    Hello all,
Well owned my drive a couple weeks now, tried to write my first DVD and it will not work.
Admitedly I have only tried one media type (BenQ DVD-R) with no luck, but still.
My second problem is selecting write speed with Nero - I am only given the option of 1, 2, 2.4x.  I didnt go out and buy a 8x writer to get 2.4x write.  Any suggestions?
PS:  No firmware update done yet - I expect it to at least offer the option to write @ 8 x out the box.
    Thanks
    Leon

    what media do you use?
In the same way that you have speed grade for CDs, you have the same for DVDs. If your media is only 2.4x, then Nero will select the appropriate speed for you. I think you can force the speed, but you will most likely produce a coaster.
Use high quality high speed media if you want to burn at 8x... (not the cheap no-name ones)

  • Solaris 9 - INIT: Cannot create /var/adm/utmpx (System Hangs)

    Hello,
I am unable to boot into solaris 9 after I did a init 0. I did init 0 because shutdown -y -g0 -i0 did not work.
This is the error message I get
    Hardware watchdog enabled
    INIT: Cannot create /var/adm/utmpx
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:" "
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:" "
    INIT: SINGLE USER MODE
Type control-d to proceed with normal startup,
(or give root password for system maintenance):
After it asks for the password it HANGS.
I entered the password, but NOTHING HAPPENS.
I can go into sc console though.
I also rebooted using Solaris 9 cdrom in single user mode. Checked the filesystem using fsck, and no faults were found. I also tried creating a new /var/adm/utmpx file but that did not work too.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Thank you,
    Jacob.

    Hello,
Check for /var filesystem usage,if it is not mouted as seperate filesystem then check for "/" FS usage.
There may be chances you get to have this problem if your FS is full.
If everything normal then follow the below steps, which solved similar kind of issues in the past for me.
Logon to the system and when you get prompt just run fsck on your root filesystem.
Check /etc/vfstab file to ensure that you are running fsck on correct fs name.
After completing fsck just say "reboot". The machine will boot normally.
In b/w is this machine disks are mirrored?? if so then you may need to choose the disks carefully before you run fsck.
    thanks.

As you can guess your harddrive goes bad.
Boot from CD-ROM into single-user mode
    boot cdrom -s
Start the format program, select the disk.
Try to analyze the surface (select a non-destructive test !!!)
Probably the bad spot can be relocated. If not replace the disk after doing a backup.
Use format to get the information on the disk-layout
Try to fsck the slices one by one
Backup the valuable data to tape

  • Solaris 8 Boot Problems, random messages [/etc/rcS: /etc/dfs/sharetab:]

    Hello All,
I have all of a sudden developed issues with booting up one of my Solaris 8 [V240] Servers. Upon a routine reboot, I was faced with the following errors:

So I figured, Oh crap...the disk is messed up. However, on running a few scans, i.e. 'iostat -En' showed ALL errors to be '0'. In addition, I ran the format -> analyze -> read test which ran for about 10 or so hours and came back saying 0 errors found to be repaired. So it appears nothing particularly is wrong with my hardware. After the 2nd reboot, I didn't get the errors above anymore but now I can't seem to get past the single-user mode. I get the following errors.
mount: the state of /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0 is not okay

I have read a whole bunch of stuff as I found on google, like /var being full (it's not), the WWN being wrong as compared between vfstab, /dev, and /devices directory etc. I don't know what is wrong and I don't know what to do to fix this. Any ideas as to why this happened and what I can do?
    PLEASE HELP!!!

    Hi Darren,
thanks again for the response. Ok, so the question that I have right now is how do I fix my original issue pasted below:
mount: the state of /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0 is not okay
and it was attempted to be mounted read/write
mount: Please run fsck and try again
    /sbin/rcS: /etc/dfs/sharetab: cannot create
failed to open /etc/coreadm.confsyseventd: Unable to open daemon lock file '/etc/sysevent/syseventd_lock': 'Read-only file system'
    INIT: Cannot create /var/adm/utmpx
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:" "
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:" "
INIT: SINGLE USER MODEWill running fsck fix this too? This is a critical machine and I need to bring it up during worktime in the eastern part of the world. This server has worked totally fine for over 180 days with the invalid filesystem and the inability to run fsck. Any ideas on how to fix the errors above?
    Also
Yes. It needs to be at least the size of the filesystem, which you've reported to be 143349312 sectors. There's no easy way to shrink a UFS filesystem.Does this mean that that I have to re-create the partitions/layout of the disk and reinstall the OS and applications? Is there any way to re-layout without destroying the data?
    Thanks
    \R

  • Cant mount /var at boot

I am experiencing problem with our v480 server, as ocasionally it fails to boot and gives cant mount /var error and goes into single user mode. (Log file is attached below). Once this happens, it doesnt come back into runlevel 3 until it is completely powered off and on.
I fixed the (ufs log for / changed state to Error ) message by removing the patch 113073-14 and making / as nologging in /etc/vfstab file. But the problem with not mounting /var still comes up. I am attaching the log file below with the ufslog error message included (which doesnt show up after patch removal).
I am looking for any suggestions or hints, what would be causing this. Thanks a lot.

This error doesnt occur in all boots, but once it occurs , we have to power off the machine and power back on and machine boots normally into run level 3 without this /var error. otherwise a simple reboot doesnt help and we get the same error.
Here is the /etc/vfstab file, may be you can suggest further.

  • Acces server....

Hi every one... well mi proble is the next, i have a Netra X1 server, and i'm accesing to the server via hyperterminal, but when i boot appears the next:
    "INIT: /etc/inittab truncated or corrupted
    INIT: Cannot create /var/adm/utmpx
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:" "
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:" "
    INIT: SINGLE USER MODE
Type control-d to proceed with normal startup, (or give root password for system maintenance): "
After that the server CAN'T accept any key, but in "lom>" mode it CAN type anything...
    Can u helpme with that?

You will either have to build a net image server (Jumpstart server) on another system or install an IDE CDROM in place of the second disk and load Solaris 8 2/02 only.
To build a Jumpstart server login in to http://sunsolve.Sun.COM (your username & password that you use here should work)
In the upper right hand corner click on "advanced".
On the next page click the Free Info Docs box and then Next.
On the following page enter 26310 in Entire document line and then Go.
Click on Free Info Doc 26310.
    Follow it EXACTLY.

  • No /etc/vfstab file

My Blade 1500 has developed a serious error. It is running Solaris 9 with mirrored disks.
When I try to boot up I get the following messages:
    /sbin/rcS: /etc/vfstab: cannot open
    INIT: Cannot create /var/adm/utmpx
INIT: Failed write of utmpx entry:" "
INIT: Failed write of utmpx entry:" "
    INIT: SINGLE USER MODE
Previously when I got this mesage I followed the steps outlined in the Solstice DiskSuite 4,2 User Guide to recover from improper /etc/vfstab entries
I was able to mount the correct partition using:
    #mount -o rw, remount /dev/md/dsk/d0 /
    #metaroot d0
This seemed to fix it, however the problem returned at a later reboot, I repeated the procedure and from this point I also checked all submirrors using FSCK and performed a format->analyze->read on both disks ( as detailed in Big Admin: Responding to disk errors on both root mirrors). Both came up clear.
Finally I checked using metastat, which said I need to resync all mirrors. Again this worked okay.
The problem is now that when I boot I get the same message. I can't use mount.
    #mount -o rw,remount /dev/md/dsk/d0
    gives
    mount: cannot open /etc/vfstab
    and
    #metastat
    gives
metastat: /dev/md/admin: No such device or address
on top of all of this in etc I have no vfstab or system file.
I can also not access the cdrom, I get the "can't read disk label, can't open disk laberl package, evaluating can't open boot device" message.

    I have also tried

    with no success
    Any ideas?

    Hello Robert,
When I tried to su to root, it was from a non root account I was talking about not from root.
Yes you were absolutely correct, I was able to login to root on the main system console and back the group name to sys on both files i.e. /usr/bin/su and /sbin/su.static using the chgrp command.
After making the change I was able to su to root from a non root user account.
Also I did not need to take the system down and split the mirror.
    Thank you
    Dan
