Failing Graphics card?

Hi!
I bought a used MBP 15 inch Early 2011 2.2 GHz a couple of months ago and it has worked perfect until a couple of days ago.
I had used it normally at the evening before (editing pictures in Photoshop, watched movies, listned to music etc.) and at the morning the day after, when I turned it on, it only showed a lightning bolt symbol and a "hazard"- symbol. It does that since then every time I boot it. The only way is to boot in safe-mode but then I lose a lot of functions I want to use.
I recently upgraded it from 4 GB to 16 GB (1333 MHz), could it be because of that?
I have formatted the hard drive and installed a new Mountain Lion, ran repair disk permissions several times, reset PRAM and SMC but it still does the same thing when I boot.
Is there someone who knows what could have happened? And who might have any solutions? I realise that I probably in the end will have to turn it in to Apple Support and pay a lot of money to get it fixed, but I thought I could ask here first.
I also read somewhere that I could take out the graphics card and put it in the oven for 8 minutes in 200°C and it would get fixed, this sound very bad and unreliable though!
Please, please, please, if you know what this might be or have any solution, reply to this post!
Thank you,
Oskar

Realized that the symbol was the Firewire-symbol and to add a little information, my T-key on my keyboard is stuck (not physically, but probably some short circuit or something). I solved this by buying Apple's external wireless keyboard and putting in a code, each time I use the computer, in the Terminal which disables the internal keyboard. The problem is that this changing resets every time I reboot the computer, which means that the T-key is "pushed" while booting. This give me the Target Disk Mode. Therefore, I can boot in Safe Mode, reinstall the computer etc. without problems since those thing probably "overwrite" the Target Disk Mode.
So my question is now; is there any way to disable the internal keyboard so that it will keep on being disabled even after Reboot?
Thank you,
Oskar

  • Apple have just replaced aMLB $945 aus. as my macbook pro graphics card failed. but 4 weeks later the screen has gone blank .i will take it in as the Mlb is still under warranty. could the MLB be damaged or worn out.?

what do you suppose is wrong with my macbook pro seeing as the apple store have just replaced a MLB at $945aus because of a failed graphic card. the new one they replaced lasted 4 weeks and again a blank screen.

You have a 90 day warranty after your machine has been repaired. Call the Apple Store/AASP and have them take another look at it.

  • New Graphics Card won't get past HP splash screen.

A customer bought in an Hp Pavilion P6755a, well out of warrenty with a failing graphics card. The customer does a lot of gaming so we sugested they repalce the3 graphics card, and get something a bit more powerfull at the sametime.  We settled on an Gigabyte GTX 750TI, as it has resonable power at a low price, but more importanly it doesnt require extra power.
Popped in the new card, but the computer won't get past the HP splash screen, can't enter the BOIS either.
Trouble shooting I have already tried
*Installed a differnt card (GTX 230) which worked fine
*Tried the GTX750Ti in another computer to check it wasn't faulty (The other computer was even older than this one by several years)
*Tried a more powerfull PSU  (it worked fine in a another computer with only a 300W PSU)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello @RileyNZL,
I understand that when you install the GeForce GTX 750 Ti graphics card in your HP Pavilion p6755a Desktop PC it will not boot up. The reason for this is because your motherboard only supports PCI Express 1.0 and the graphics card is a PCI Express 3.0. Theoretically, the card should work, but there is a break in the support chain at around PCI Express version 2.1 where PCI Express 1.0 is no longer compatible. I suspect that your other computer does not have PCI Express 1.0.
I hope this helps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Graphic card issues vs. Hard drive issues

My laptop recently died on me. It was super hot and the circle of death kept popping up. Finally it took too long to load and my friend tried to repair my disk and that failed. So then my macbook pro was left with a folder with a flashing question mark inside it. I took it to another repair centre since my warranty ran out and I wanted to get it fix ASAP for uni and booking appointments at Apple take forever. They initially told me it's issues with my hard drive and quoted me a price. Then I called them and they told me it's my graphics card and the price to fix it is more expensive.
I've done some research and from my symptoms it's consistent with a failing HD. I can't find any info about a failing graphics card, but not glitches appeared on my screen or anything. I just am unsure whether they've correctly diagnosed the problem.
So my question is, pretty much, do you think these guys are dodging me?

What you are stating seems like a HD failure, but what if there were multiple problems on your computer?  What did your friend do before it had the folder with the question mark?  What model is your MBP?  I remember reading there were problems with the nvidia graphics chip for a particular model.
If you don't trust what the computer shop is doing, then simply bring it to somewhere else to diagnose it again.

  • MacPro black Graphic Card Decision / Photoshop 6

Hi, we are a german post production company, i want to buy a few MAC Pros, but i have no idea which Graphic Card perfectly suits Adobe Photoshop CC or 6
It is possible to select 2 AMD FirePro D300, D500 or D700. We mostly do large size beauty pictures up to a few GB.
Which one is not supported by Photoshop or which one will work best?

doesn't display in normal mode but in safe mode it display accurate.
That is a common indicator of a failed graphics card.
Skip all the old refurbished and repaired antique cards. Replace with the Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250. Works in all models of Mac Pro. Drivers are in 10.6.5 and later.
has MUCH more display RAM. Supports OpenCL.

  • My graphic card failed but passes the recall test - surely Apple would replace it? How wrong can you be!

Even though I had read about the product recall on some iMacs, mine had never had an issue, but to be safe, the plan was to take it to an Apple store to have them test and replace it.
A week ago, on occasion, the screen suddenly started going completely gray, everything else seemed to be working fine, and any apps running would continue to do so. Without being able to see the screen, the only options was to power it down, run any diagnostic test and start normally. It passed pro tools tests, with no warnings so I thought it could have been a software issue. After many restarts without anything else plugged in, the iMac appeared to function for maybe a day or so, but gray screen whenever it wanted to.
So I called Apple, they told me to get it into a service centre, and they would do further tests. Whilst on the phone to the engineer, my iMac with the gray screen suddenly refused to power back up. The engineers tell me that the graphic card fails any benchmarking tests with corruption and the same gray screen issue, so it looks promising yes? No. The specific tests that the machine must fail for the recall - passed.
Having spent almost an hour on the phone to a Apple senior advisor today, he tells me that it is not covered by the recall !!
The machine is one of the matching serial numbered machines in the recall, it has suddenly developed a graphic card issue that leaves the machine unusable, it suddenly started having this problem within weeks of the recall being announced - It has the faulty card in it, it has the fault - yet it does not qualify?
Can someone please tell me what I could have done to get this card replaced without the estimated £250 charge to get my machine running again.
I am a die hard Apple enthusiast, I have converted everyone I have been in contact with to purchase from them for their legendary customer services and yet feel perplexed as to what I should do next.
My first reaction is to raise a big fuss about the situation at an Apple store, but I can't blame them too much if my machine does not match the recall criteria - but come on, it can't be a coincident that this card has failed now, can it?
What do I do next. I don't want to take my machine over to proper Apple store and raise a fuss, that would be counter productive. But  really Apple
Anyone have a suggestion - would you buy another iMac that could have the same problem and get the same response?
To any Apple engineers out there who can look at  a case number my ref number is 500592345, apparently there is a lot of info in there, but nothing that will help me!

Apple engineers do not participate here. The only replies you will normally get are from people who are, like me, just fellow users, and there's nothing any of us can do to intervene in this matter.
If Apple says that your system is not covered by the recall, there's not much you can do. You can try taking your system to an Apple Store and politely - do not "make a fuss"; polite but gently insistent is much more likely to get you useful results - ask for assistance. Or you can call Apple tech support, ask to speak with customer relations, and explain the situation to them and request coverage under the recall program.
If all that fails, though, then you're probably at a dead end and will need to pay for the service if you want it done.
    Regards.

  • How can you tell if your video/graphics card is failing?

I have been playing World of Warcraft for over 7 months now (insert geek jokes here), and I have never experienced the problems that I have been experiencing with WoW this weekend.
I was hoping that it was just a connection/internet issue with WoW, but when i play on my laptop (and older Powerbook G4), screen loads aren't slow like they are on my Intel iMac.
Yesterday and today have been horrible. I'll get disconnected at least 4-5 times (which NEVER happens) and when I am finally logged into my account for game play, it's horrible lag. And even then, it takes a while for the background or other characters to load.
I'm worried that it's my video/graphics card and might be failing. How would I know if this was the case?
I am still hoping it's just a connectivity issue and has nothing to do with my card. But I don't know at this point.
    I'm very frustrated.
Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Suzanne

Wow, ok, sounds like you are on the exact same path that I'm on. I'm a WOW player also, have had my iMac since 2008 (and play wow alot, raiding, etc) and recently it fried it's graphics card. I just replied to your thread about HDDs... so please see that response.
I'm convinced it's a heat issue and I have a feeling the latest OSX update may have changed something about the fan speed that caused extra heat to build up. Just a theory.
Anyway, your options are very limited for "fixing" a screwed up graphics card. Hopefully you have AppleCare, otherwise you're looking at ~$500 to fix this.
I'm not going to bother. Just bought a new monitor and graphics card for my 4y.o. Windows machine and will be using that from now on. I'll miss the Apple display and the operating system, but the hardware doesn't make me happy at all.
    Good luck!

  • Video test failed in graphic card laptop g50-70

    Result code: WVC003000-DK7X2I
    Video Card.
so i want to know why test show warning in my graphic card

    hi bhavik455,
    Welcome to the Forums.
Getting an error on the Lenovo Solutions Center (LSC) Hardware Scan might mean that the GPU is failing. This comes with a sign like lots of BSOD that's pointing to the graphics card, artifacts on the screen while playing games / videos, or the machine suddenly won't show a display.
If you're not experiencing any of the above symptoms then it's likely that the graphics card on the unit is functioning properly and the LSC is just showing some alse positive errors.
To verify, try running a stress test on the GPU to check its stability by running OCCT or similar utility.

  • Graphic card on MacBook pro 17 inch fails

    Hello
my MacBook Pro screen stays black and after check up it is the graphic card nvidia which has failed. It was brought to my attention that Apple had a recall on Mac book pro from 2007 and 2008 and I believe mine is one of them. Now the issue is Apple considers this computer vintage, so a third party will have to do the repair. My question to Apple is: will they pay for this repair?

Nope - you're stuck with the Intel 4000. If you wanted a higher-performance GPU, you should have bought a 15".

  • HP p6310y graphics card failing, will one of these work?

For the last few days my monitor blacks out for a few minutes, so I thought the monitor was going bad, but last night while usiing a 3D program an error poppped up. Something about nvidia card has failed, but has recovered. The graphics card installed is what came with the PC when purchased. It's an Nvidia GeForce 9100. I've been looking at graphics cards all day and am just getting more and more confused. I do not do any gaming, but I do need a card good enough to run 3D rendering programs and programs like photoshop, and also need an affordable one. Are  either of these compatible with my PC and will they run these programs?

    Hi:
I think the 610 GT will work fine in your PC.
I would go with this one as the specs state it has a 128 bit memory interface.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814139078
That will be a better performing card over one with a 64 bit memory interface.
New Egg has the same 64 bit Galaxy card for a lot less ($20) than Best Buy.

  • ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB graphics card has failed?

I think my ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB graphics card has failed...
This is a MacPro 1,1 (2006). We're on our yacht in a French territory, South Pacific, so local support is non-obtainium. I would appreciate any advice on how I can confirm my graphics card is dead.
I have only 23" Apple Cinema Display for testing. The display works great on MBP, so that end is good.
The MacPro seems to boot normally - AFAIK based on startup sounds, fan, RAM LED diagnostic lights.
    Suggestions?

Case A) the screen goes blank at the login screen
invoke Safe Mode (hold down the Shift key at Startup).
This performs a five minutes or so Disk Utility ( Repair Disk) on the boot drive, then demands your userId and password, even if you normally auto-login.
Safe Mode only loads the absolutely essential Drivers, and the graphics drivers are not considered essential. So screen re-draw may be slow, but you can check your email, surf a little, do many operations that do not require graphics acceleration.
    Edit movies? Probably not.
Case B) your screen completely blank
If the power-on light flashes in a pattern, that indicates not enough good RAM to start up.
If no power light flashing, you need some function you can invoke that will show a non-graphics result.
The Caps Lock light on the keyboard is under software Control. If it works, at least the SMC controller that talks to the keyboard is working.
Holding down Control while pressing the Eject key on the keyboard brings up this familiar dialog box, whether you can see it or not:
    any key except:
    R for Restart;
    S for Sleep;
    Esc for cancel;
and return for the default Shut Down
should cause the System Beep sound. S should Sleep it, and the power light should shortly indicate that it is sleeping. Any key will then wake it up.

  • Refurb i3 21.5 lasted 2 1/2 months and graphics card failed??

I got a refurb 21.5 i3 in mid February of this year and it was a really nice machine and was fine out of the box, but, 2 1/2 months later it started getting random artifacts on the screen. I ignored it for a few days and tried doing all the usual easy things(resetting the SMC etc) they tell you to do first when you call in with a problem and nothing helped and then it became constant and icons in the dock started to "split" i.e. Safari and Firefox were next to each other and when you highlighted Safari and it magnified it appeared both in it's spot as well as half next Firefox and there was a permanent line where the dock was and I got triangle shaped pieces that looked like tears in the screen and garbled text too.
I called and they made me an appointment at the Genius Bar and they offered me a replacement after only 5 minutes of looking at it and seeing how bad it was. I am happy they gave me a new machine instead of a refurb BUT I am here 19 days later still using my trusty 1.42 Emac and the iMac sits here unopened and still sealed as I am afraid to use it as all THREE Intel Macs all failed (Mini 1.66ghz 3 motherboards in 6 months and replaced, 24" C2D iMac 2 graphics cards in 5 months and then it failed again out of Applecare warranty and I lost over $1000 in 3 years 1 month, then this last one in 2 1/2 months) I do not smoke, use an APC battery backup/sure protector, my outlet is grounded and my voltage in my house if very stable with little variation. Is there something I am missing??? I am now nearly $3600 in Macs over about 5 years and using a $100 Emac that is even older than that. Anyone else have similar experiences or can tell me what I am doing wrong to cause this? I love the Mac OS but constantly changing computers is getting very old and lugging them to the Mall 25 miles away is a real pain not to mention a great waste of time.

I hear that, person who I dealt with at Apple store said mine was the first of this generation of iMac he has seen with the issues I had but he too had a 24" C2D like mine with multiple graphics card failures and took a big hit on selling it as he got tired of fixing it. My biggest issue is I seem to have lost the lottery 3 times with my recent machines, transferring 250-300gb of video, 75 or so gb of music plus all my email, GarageSale etc is a pain every few months backup or not it still takes time. On average I lose 3-4 days between driving back and forth twice to the Apple store, transferring everything and getting the machine how I like it.
I sold over 60 G3 iMacs from a local school district on Ebay and out of those NONE were unusable unless they had a physical issue caused by rough handling like dropping or a failed optical drive and there were only 2 of those.
I have had G3, G4, G5 iMacs, G4 Emacs, G3,4,5 Powermacs for my own use and never had an issue like the ones I experienced with just 3 Intel based machines and every time I got a new machine it was an upgrade in speed never for a failed unit and I always sold them for a fair price and put it towards the new one. It seems as though you are almost being forced to buy a new machine soon after your warranty runs out due to failure, I am not rich by any stretch of the imagination and this seems a high price to pay for using a premium machine in my honest opinion.
Again, this just MY opinion and there seem to be 999,999 happy stories to my one sad one but everyone has a different idea of a good experience with a machine as far as service and reliability.
I am not downing Apple products as a whole as I had many, many good experiences with them to this point including Ipods, Ipads, and PPC machines but since there seems to be an endless supply of i3 21.5" refurbs on the online Apple store there has to be an inordinately high number of them coming back for one reason or another this is just simple math. I purchased a refurb for 2 reasons 1) it is cheaper not going to deny I hoped to save a few bucks on it 2) I figured a machine that was returned once would have updated parts installed and be trouble free but it was not.

    Hi Ken,
Look aon the top back of the graphics card for a switch.  See the below image.
You should have received a pamphlet in the box describing the use of the switch (legacy mode or UEFI mode).  If your PC has a version 8 HP BIOS then disable secure boot if set. If your PC is not at a version 8 BIOS level then the switch should be in legacy position.  The pamphlet should describe the use of the switch.

  • IMac (late 2009) - Graphic Card Failing?

    Hi everybody:
For about a week now, my iMac has been mysteriously freezing —
everything locks up except for sound & mouse cursor —
forcing me to do a hard restart.
This happens at least 7 or 8 times a day.
Doesn’t seem linked to any specific program or action.
Today the freezes are accompanied with heavy screen glitches.
After poking around in the forums, I’ve gathered that it’s likely that my Graphics Card is failing.
I’ve tried re-installing Mavericks — but that didn’t seem to do anything.
Any last minute ideas / wisdom before I do the Genius Bar thing?
Thanks in advance for any advice…
