Failure to launch computer

Several times a week, my MacPro fails to launch on the first attempt. A gray screen appears, but the Apple logo never displays. I have to shut down the computer and re-start. Most of the time, the second attempt is successful. How can this problem be fixed?

Every time you try and fail to boot or freeze, the directory and file system is just more lkely to become corrupt and need to run Disk Utility/Warrior and finally, restore from backups, or a full clean install.
When you get your files backed up and a 2nd boot drive zero your existing drives before you put data on them.

    Hi
NO - there is no solution.
You need a version more modern than iDVD 5 to be able to run under Mac OS X.5 !
    No there are no download-fixes.

  • Failure to launch GoLive 5

    Hey,
I have a "failure to launch" message that appears when I try to launch Adobe GoLive 5.0, a message that wasn't there yesterday (..wha?). It reads "Failure to launch GoLive 5 because SCL 2.0 could not be found". I've re-installed GL 5 but am still getting the message. This is an app that I've been running in Classic without a hitch, up til now. Can anyone help me understand what "SCL 2.0" is ?

Do you have a backup to compare your machine to from when it did work? Perhaps you disabled an extensions necessary for it to work.

I downloaded Adobe X, but it refuses to launch. I see the Akamai installer is  a 32 bit program, and I guess Acrobat X is too. Can this failure to launch be a conflict with my 64 bit Wndows 7 os?

There is no conflict of Acrobat X with Windows 7 64 bit , we would like to know what exactly is the error message and when did you get it.?

And, how do I control that in Visual Studio?
All I get is the Attach Debugger... context menu option in the Azure cloud service nodes in Server Explorer. That is where it is failing. There are no customisable options.
Because of that, the Attach to Process dialog box is unable to retrieve the list of processes (to debug) in the remote worker role instance server.
I tested a blank-template worker role project and published to a new cloud project, and this simplistic copy had no problems with the Remote debugger.
Now the question is, what is it about this real-world project/cloud service that is different from blank sample? From what I compare between what I think are the relevant settings, there are none.

  • Adobe Bridge Failure to Launch

I have CS4 Design Premium for Mac. As of this morning, as soon as I launch Adobe Bridge, it immediately shuts down. I have restarted my computer twice, checked for software updates and am out of ideas. Any ideas? Bridge has always been a little glitchy on my system (some viewer modes cause the software to shut down on occasion). Help?

1}I would say uninstall it, clean out any trace of it, reboot, check for any updates reboot, and reinstall, leave defualt location where it installs itself!
2} look for maybe an older version, you can find one anywhere like www.kat.com try that working it from the bottom on up! even if you have to start at 1.0, let mwe know how that goes!

  • Failure to launch...audio configuration issue!

I just upgraded to 7.0.2 and now iTunes will not launch. When I try to open iTunes I get the following message: "iTunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration."
This has never ocurred before and I don't know how to fix this annoying problem. I've tried a few of the troubleshooting options but none of them worked.
    What should I do???
    Dell Inspiron 6000   Windows XP

"iTunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration."
that one is typically associated with a problem with your QuickTime. (itunes uses QuickTime for audio and video playback.)
so let's first try swapping out your QuickTime.
head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch properly now?

  • External Cache Failure reported and computer won't boot

I have a highly upgraded Digital Audio G4 (originally a single processor 533 Mhz, now a Dual 1.2 Mhz). The machine has been running through many ups and downs hangning in there for a while. Basically everything has been upgraded except the motherboard. Normally, this machine runs like a champ and I changed nothing on it when it started behaving erratically. It just sat powered off for a while.
The latest problem ocurred out of the blue:
After being powered completely off for some hours, when I went to boot it back up, everything came on like it normally does (fans, power light, hd's sound like they're running etc.), but it would not boot. My monitor would just go into power save mode and display nothing. When the computer does this, I cannot reset PRAM nor can I boot into Open Firmware. There are no chimes and the PRAM does nothing. My keyboard does not respond to any external stimuli, it will not boot off the original CD. No keyboard input affects the way it boots. It is as though the computer powers on but starts up nothing.
The only thing I have been able to do to get it up and running is to hit the black PMU reset button on the motherboard. If I do this before powering on, then the machine boots up as normal. When I actually shut down and lose power to the motherboard, then later try to reboot, it goes through this process again and again - monitor goes into powersave mode, no PRAM reset abilities, nothing boots, sits powered on only, etc. If I open the case, hit the PMU button, close the case and then restart, the Mac behaves as normal... UNTIL you shut it down and try to power it up, then it goes through this process until the PMU is reset.
First thing I did was replace the battery with a fresh new one that I have. The computer behaves exactly the same. I have tried resetting PRAM when it boots back up, have tried resetting NVRAM when it boots back up. None of this changes the behavior.
I was at a loss with this and tried disconnecting my external devices which did not change the behavior.
The reason I now believe it has something to do with the External Cache is as follows:
I have two versions of Mac OSX on two different drives. In System Profiler, Panther told me nothing was unusual. All devices including RAM seem to be okay. When running System Profiler in Tiger, I found a new item in the list called "Diagnostics".
Under Diagnostics, there was this very perculiar message: "Power On Self Test - Result FAILED, Failure Type - External Cache".
What does this mean? Is there a way to fix this? I am sure that it's related to my problem, but what are viable solutions?
    G4 Dual 1.2 / PB 1.5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   running Tiger & Panther, 1.25 GB RAM

I have narrowed this down to an issue with my 3rd party Gigadesigns CPU upgrade. Though it worked flawlessly for about a year and a half, it now does not like being powered off. Works fine if you leave it on, but to reboot after a power down, the PMU must be reset. PIA! But at least it works. But it fails to get past POST (Power On Startup Tests) without the PMU.
By replacing my original 533Mhz CPU, the power off problem disappeared. Of course, that's not an optimal solution, so now I either keep the machine on all the time or it's PMU time.
Hope this helps someone down the road...

  • Unable to fully launch computer

My computer started yesterday to click and overheat, I turned on the fan system i have for it and then all applications started freezing (safari, itunes, etc.) so i had to hold down the power button to restart. I waited about an hour to turn it back on and when it starts now all i get is a very long showing of a gray screen and then a small folder shows up in the middle and flashs the finder icon and then a question mark. Ive tried booting up in safemode and other ways that ive seen in other topics but get the same thing. I would really like to 1. Save the computer. 2. Save the things on the computer. Thanks for the help.

My experience with several Apple laptops and desktops that have had this problem (or similar problems) has been that their hard drives had died. In some cases, I was able to resurrect the hard drives with Apple Disk Utility (by using it to repair the drives). In other cases, I had to erase the drive and reinstall Tiger from scratch. However, in all but one case, the hard drives failed again in a short time. And when I replaced the hard drives with new ones, the problems were gone.
DiskWarrior is supposed to be superior to Apple's Disk Utility for repairing hard drives, but I have no experience with it, so I can't recommend it.
Regardless, I would say with 90% certainty that your hard drive is toast.
Try booting off your System Install disk and, when you get to the screen that asks you if you want to install, locate the menu bar with the drop down that gives you the Disk Utility option. Launch Disk Utility and check to see if it recognizes your hard drive. If it does, select it and choose "Verify Disk". That will tell you if there are any problems that need to be repaired. If you need to repair it, do so.
If all goes well and you're able to boot the computer, IMMEDIATELY back up all your important info onto an external hard drive.
After that, you can either opt to take the computer in for service (what I would do) or take the chance that your drive has been sufficiently repaired. If you're handy, and the computer is out of warranty, you might want to replace the hard drive yourself. Visit ifixit.com and look at the guides. They're great, detailed photo guides that take you through the steps to repair almost any component on your laptop. You can also buy the right replacement drive from them, although I would shop around for a better deal. iFixit hard drives are a little pricey.
If you're not handy (or if you don't have an external drive, or if you can't get your laptop to boot even with the System Disk) check out www.techrestore.com. They have a 24-hour hard drive replacement/upgrade service that, if you need it, will include transferring your data from the old drive to the new one, if they can.
Hope this all helps. Good luck!

  • HP TouchSmart600 Failure to launch after installing Win10

I tried to download Win10 today. My TouchSmart 600 downloaded ALL the program and as it went on with the install it said everything was good but at the final launchif hung up and wouldn't launch. It hard the startup repair screen and made me restore to the previous Win7. I had a similar issue when I tried to install Win8 too, it downloads the progam ok, but cannot lauch it. There is some hardware or software component that is preventing it from launching and its pissing me off! This computer wans't cheap and I have TWO of them! I think when I tried to investigate why it wouldn't launch WIn8 I read that the issues was with graphics driver or video card? Apparently there was a fundamental conflict and HP had not deeoped a patch. I was hoping that 2 years later they would have figured this out and got it sorted for Win10. Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this so I can enjoy Win10?  Again, i can download and install the program, the issue comes when it goes to launch it.

  • Brand New iPod Touch, absolute failure to launch

Hi all, I was hoping someone here could help me.
I currently live and study in Japan, and thought I'd treat myself to a shiny new 32GB iPod Touch after my girlfriend and I marvelled over them for about an hour in the Nagoya apple shop. I popped into town today and picked one up.
I already have iTunes and a 3rd Generation iPod Nano 8GB, and they work fine, apart from sync problems, probably related to my Vista operating system.
When I got home, I plugged my new Touch into my freshly-booted pc... and nothing. The "hardware recognised" sound plays, and the ipod flickers on for about two seconds, displaying a connection cable and the iTunes logo, presummably telling my to connect it to iTunes.
Well, obviously I can't. The thing isn't even recognised in the "My Computer" window. The only place my pc sees it at all is in the divice manager under "Other Devices". It either has a question mark next to it, or an error saying the driver is not configured correctly. I have tried the "update driver" button, disabling and re-enabling, restarting my pc, and re-installing itunes, all to no avail.
The worrying thing is, the ipod itself seems unresponsive. All that happens when I press the button, is a few seconds of the image pressummably telling me to connect it to itunes, then it just seems to turn off again. Holding down the button doesn't do anything.
This is really worrying, as it is brand new, out of the box, and was $600 with the case.
    Can anyone shed any light?
    Thanks

Just something I forgot to add: For the few seconds that the ipod stays on, when it displays in the "Other Devices" tab in Device Managed, if I press on "Properties", I get this message:
This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.
Not really sure what this means, as reinstalling drivers doesn't seem to do anything...

  • Failure to launch on an iBook G3

    Hello folks,
I've got an iBook, 600 MHz PowerPC G3, 640 MB memory, running Mac OS 10.2.8
I'm currently trying to specifically get it to run GarageBand, so I have a copy of iLife 04 I've installed on it. I can successfully run iMovie and iPhoto, iDVD is incompatible, plus redundant as it doesn't have a built in DVD drive (had to plug in an external just to read the install DVD for iLife 04), and even though it should have iTunes didn't install, doesn't show in finder. No matter, again all I really wanted out of the bundle at the moment was GarageBand, which was shown as entirely compatible with my system specs via its readme and displays on my applications list in finder after I've run the iLife 04 bundle installer.
However when I attempt to launch it, I get it jumping on the dock as it initializes, for a brief moment I get the title "GarageBand" and it's other sub-menus on the menu bar at the top of the screen, but then nothing actually launches, it stops jumping, and the menu bar reverts to Finder as it aborts running the application. No error dialogue bubble is displayed.
Is there a known reason why this happens?

It looks like GarageBand 3 came out with iLife '06:
    http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/garageband/
It's probably too new to work with a G3 processor, and, if I remember correctly, even with earlier versions of GarageBand, it took a G4 processor to use GarageBand Musical Instruments with it.
