Fan heat

Hi,
I am using a Mac book pro, recently purchased, my fan speen goes very high and the heat increases when I open the games, it is the expected behaviour in Macbook pro 2011? how to reduce the fan speed and control heat?

Same here on 17" CPU temp. at 122F two fans are going a little faster CPU 999 rpm, HD 999 rpm and one slower Opt. Dr. 1200 rpm.

  • Static/crackling freezes/shuts down Toshiba L300 (already cleaned fan/heat sink)

Was slightly intermittent but pretty much unable to use the computer at this point. The only clues I can give is that there seemed to be 2 errors about usb so wondering if that could cause the static build up that freezes the computer? One was on shut down and the other was after static started and it seemed to be trying to grab a driver (for usb I think) almost as though the device disappeared but then the laptop froze. It wasn't too long ago one of three ports wasn't working but they all work recently (don't recall which one quit for a bit).
Unfortunately I need to fix it myself due to finances. How do I physically disconnect all the usb ports to rule them out? I probably did this when I took out the motherboard to clean the fan/heat sink but I don't know for sure which connection(s) they were.
If I'm way off please provide other suggestions. I REALLY appreciate any help given.

first off, please provide the entire model number of your computer.  It is printed on the bottom.  do not provide s/n.
Do you have a backup of all your personal data?  If not, I would say that should be your priority at this point.
After that has been dealt with, the next question is "did you make restore disks when computer was still working?"
Can you get into recovery menu (spamming f8 on start up).  If so, try going into safe mode and restoring the computer to a restore point at a point in time before the problems started.
When you cleaned fan/heat sink, did you reseat the heatsink.  If not, you may want to open it back up and reseat the heatsink (i.e., remove old thermal paste and reapply).

  • MacBook Pro Retina - Fan/Heat During File Transfer

    Hey guys,
I just had my MacBook Pro Retina in for repair because of an 4HDD/11/400000000: Sata (0,0) error and they replaced the SSD. I have a 2.7/16/768 configuration. One of the main issues I noticed was periodically slow file transfers, load times and boots hanging etc. and a secondary reason was a high-pitched buzzing with heavy disk usage.
My question now is... when I'm doing something as simple as a large file transfer, or installing some apps etc. the MacBook really heats up and the fans really start spinning sometimes. I've never known SSD access to heat up a computer so much. Is this normal behaviour that everyone else is experiencing with their systems? To clarify: this happens when not doing anything else with the machine other than copying files around, also when copying files to/from my external drive which is connected through FireWire on the back of my 27" Thunderbolt display which is then of course connected to the MacBook via the Thunderbolt port.
Expected behaviour? Seems odd to me, but this is my first MacBook so don't know if that's the 'norm' or not.

I've managed to get the fan speed down to a reasonable, less audible level by using that old VRAM terminal command to enable me to keep the internal display disabled whilst the lid is open. I've had to shift quite a lot round on my desk to make this happen, but I guess it was the only way. It now runs 3 screens under similar loads at approximately 3500prm.
Taking your advice into consideration, I raised the rear feet and this enabled further decrease in fan speed. I guess one of those laptop stands will augment this effect, and I will look into them.
Anyway, thank you for your help!
    Thanks,
    Richard

  • Wind Box DC100 change fan/heat sink

    Hi,
I just bought the MSI Wind Box DC100 with the AMD E-450 APU, which is nice and all. But the fan on this thing is so insanely noisy, I have had a look inside (I know, warranty voided and all that) and everything looks very proprietary. I am looking to replace the fan, or the whole heat sink including fan if possible. Does anyone know of any solution to that? I have not found any standard coolers that has the same form factor as the one used in DC100.

I completely agree with the first post; the fan in the Wind Box DC100 is insanely noisy.
I bought this tiny PC for using as a mediacenter, but the fan is always running and has a high pitch that it's impossible to ignore.
Even though I've been buying MSI motherboards and PCs for years, this is surely a serious design flaw; it's a real pity, because the DC100 is a nice computer in all other aspects. I solved my problem by removing the original fan and "fitting" a huge external fan (9 cm in diameter) on the left side. It was a LONG work, because I had to cut the internal steel chassis, then the external plastic chassis, find the correct pinout and solder the small original custom connector to the new fan, remove the old fan and adapt a heatsink to take its place, route the cable and so on..
Several hours of work, but the result is completely satisfactory; the new fan is impossible to hear at maximum speed when you are 10 cm away; it's almost like having a fanless PC.
I used an Arctic F9 Pro PWM, which is 12 Volt, while the computer outputs 5 volt in that socket; it's not a problem, because in this way the fan goes at half the nominal speed (2000 rpm @ 12 volt ==> about 1000 rpm @ 5 volt), which is more than enough to keep the CPU about 10° C below the typical temperature I experienced using the old fan, while being completely silent.
At startup the DC100 outputs a message that the fan is not working (it stays for 3 seconds, then the system continues booting without a problem); that's probably because the rpm it gets from the PWM signal is way lower than that of the original fan; the rpm value returned is correct indeed, and I can monitor it in Windows.
This is the colour scheme I used to solder the old connector to the new fan:
Original fan           Arctic F9 Pro PWM
    Black          GND     Black
    Yellow         +5      Red
    Green          Sign    Yellow
    Blue           PWM     Blue
The new fan is really good; it's isolated from the computer where it is attached by using 4 rubber ties which don't propagate vibrations to the chassis. I bought it for 4,38 Euro, which would be a real bargain, if only slightly less work to fit it to the PC were needed.

  • MacBook Fan/Heat

My fan seems to be constantly running, and I don't know if it's a problem or not. My hard drive has crashed twice (I think because I was leaving my notebook on my bed all day/every day, and it was overheating with the blankets covering the fan), but I just recently got a brand new hard drive. I leave my notebook on my desk at all times now, but it always seems hot with the fan running. Is my computer defective? Does keeping it plugged into the charger too long lead it to overheat?

One thing you NEVER do is to leave a laptop on a soft surface for prolong periods of time because they tend to block or insulate heat from venting out the laptop. Go to your Applications --> Utilities folder and launch Activity Monitor to check what is making your fan spin so radically.

  • MBA Fan   Heat Problem

When ever I use my MacBook Air I mainly watch youtube video's. A couple months ago my laptop could run 1080p videos without the fan making any noise. Around 2 months ago I had the fan replaced because it broke. Now, when ever i watch a youtube video on only 480p, the fan will go up to 6000rpm and stay like that until i turn off the laptop, and also the laptop will heat up on the section just above the keyboard. After watching video and after closing off everything the fan remains at around 4000rpm - 6000rpm when the idle cpu usage is around 85%. Also, the laptop ran better when the fan was broken, after it was fixed it seems to have slowed the laptop down. Help would be Appreciated.

This is normal for Apple computers, their cooling "logic" is reactive rather than proactive, as far as the fan running high for a couple of minutes (or so) after a demanding CPU/GPU task is run for a continuous period of time. What's not normal is the idle CPU usage at 85%. What process is consuming all that? Is it kernel_task?
Having the fans run full blast even for a simple task on the MacBook Air is to be expected, as is the heat near the lettering on the bezel. Every MacBook Air that I've encountered with things like YouTube experience this, so I'd consider it normal (because all of the machines are not defective).
But I suspect on your machine there's something else at play here, whether it's a run away process or worse... someone didn't put the machine back together properly after they replaced the fan. First things, first, let's figure out what's "idle" and using 85% idle CPU load. What does Activity Monitor look like (under All Processes)?

  • Fans/Heat go off the charts when playing Apple's Chess program

Received my MacBook Core 2 Duo with 2GB ram on Nov. 20th.
When my wife plays the chess game included with the laptop, both shoot up to 50% and fluctuate to 100%, spending a lot of time near 70 - 90%.
Subsequently, the fans kick in like mad - very loud and the heat emanating from the MacBook is uncomfortable.
Using smcFanControl, the temp remains at 80-81 degress Centigrade and the fan runs at 6196 rpm throughout the duration of the game.
This does not seem normal/acceptable? Especially for the stock chess game?

I'm sitting here quite incredulous at the service and response I just experienced with Applecare.
After explaining my problem with the 80-83C/6200 rpm fan MacBook, the rep asked where we were using the Macbook.
I explained that my wife uses it primarily on her lap while riding the train or bus, and on her lap while on the couch or in bed.
Without addressing the cause of the hot Macbook, the rep directed me to stop using the macbook on the lap. Instead, the recommendation was to use it on a desk or any other flat surface.
When I pressed her on the high temp/fan speed, she put me on hold for 10 minutes to only later return and tell me to send it in for inspection - min. 7 day turnaround.
When I asked her for a case #, she put me on hold for another 15 minutes.
This is a Macbook that I received from Apple on the 20th of November.
Is this what I can expect from Applecare?

  • Macbook pro fans and heat

I have a question on the fans/heat. I mainly use the MBP in conjunction with my 21" display. I have it below my desk, closed for the most part and have an external keyboard and trackball. Is there any issue in terms of heat or the fans if the MBP is closed? I do hear the fans kicking in and wonder if the vents still work if the display is closed and not being used. I have it leaning vertically with the back of the unit facing up, I figured that was a least better as it seems that the fans blow out towards the back of the unit. I don't want it to over heat or run hot if possible, especially now since I don't have AppleCare.

This is with a youtube video playing.
Hope this works, I appreciate the help!
Google chrome helper can read anywhere from high 80's to just under 130 percent too. Likewise, when I have skype active, that does the same thing.

  • What is the part number for the fan for the dv7 2270 us

what is the part number for the fan for the dv7 2270 us

    Dear Kamat,
The HP manual (http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01689926.pdf) says that the Fan/Heat sink assembly (depending on the graphics subsystems memory type), can be the following:
    516876-001 (for discrete)
    516331-001 (for UMA)
I dont know what graphics subsystem type is the DV7-2270US (VM189UA), but it doesnt matter in this case, becouse, if you search for those two part numbers, no one of them, is used in that computer. Check it your self:

  • Dual CPU fans in IQ816 Question

I have received the fatal error message indicating that my wife's IQ816 CPU fan is dead.
When I opened up the unit I found that one of the 2 CPU fans was indeed not functioning (FYI there are a total of 3 fans in the IQ816s). The fans part number (on the part) is 13G075205000H2 which translates to HP part number 489487-001, and I have ordered a couple of these already.
However, the second CPU fan (located right next to the other one) has part number 13G075205030H2 and I have not been able to find this part number anywhere (it is the same as the first part number with one of the 0s changed to a 3 so it is possible that the same part number may be okay with both, but I have no way of knowing that).
Could someone please let me know what the HP part number is for the 13G075205030H2 as I know this fan will die eventually, and I would like to be prepared with the replacement part in hand.
    Thanks in advance,
    Don McFarland

For those who may read this thread who are not familiar with PC hardware issues, there are some basic parts which can go bad and cause a machine to no longer function. Historically, manufacturers produce these parts so that customers who need them can keep their machine up and running rather than having to buy a new one. These parts include...
    (1) CPU - okay, chances are good that the CPU manufacturer will take care of this being available
    (2) CPU Fan - on newer machines, the BIOS will not allow the machine to boot if a CPU fan is not working - whether or not these are available is largely up to the part that was selected by HP - there is no guaruntee that the part will be available unless HP makes that happen.
    (3) Memory - okay, chances are good that a memory manufacturer will take care of this being available
    (4) Hard Drive - there are plenty of hard drives out there to choose from
Note that of these 4 items, HP is off the hook on 3 of them due to the stock that other vendors maintain, namely the CPU, Memory and Hard drive. The least expensive (by a longshot) critical part is the CPU Fan/heat-sink (production cost is a few dollars).  One has to ask oneself, why HP would not make these parts available, because without them, a $2000+ computer (IQ-816 for example when they first came out) becomes a worthless piece of &^%^.
I am really having a hard time believing this sad state of affairs. For anyone reading this, make note that it does not matter how much you paid for your high end HP computer when it comes time for replacement parts, because HP is not taking the responsibility that they should to look after their customers - it may run for a couple of years or so, but when the trouble hits, you may find yourself in the same situation that I am in (i.e. can't get a part that is necessary for the computer to run).

    Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03015537.pdf
The available fan/heatsink combos with HP part numbers can be found in chapter 3, on page 27.
In order to get the right one you need to know what hardware is installed in your PC.
Since it is a CTO (configured to order), there are no product specs available.
So it is incumbent upon you to know for example if your notebook has an Intel processor and a graphics
    subsystem with 2048-MB discrete memory.
Once you determine the right part number you need, you can order it online at the link below.
    http://h20141.www2.hp.com/Hpparts/Default.aspx?mscssid=2DE434CEF5B743168A44405770DB2EA5
If you want a second opinion on if you are choosing the right part, I will be happy to help once you describe the specs for your PC.
