Fans running at a loud high speed and can't be stopped?

On several occasions I have left my Mac in sleep mode and returned a few hours later to find it roaring away loudly with the fans are just whizzing away for no reason. I mean very loud. There seems to be no way to stop this or bring it out of this activity other than to disconnect the computer. It will not awaken or restart. What is this and why is it doing it? Is the system backing itself up or something? Under normal usage, the fans never run like this, so it is obvious it is working like a demon on something, but it is nothing I told it to do. Help!

Same here. First my computer would lock up and then slowly the fans started running faster and faster until they sounded like a vacuum cleaner.
Apple had me send it to CompUSA and they couldn't get an error message from any hardware tests. They called Apple and then they replaced both of my processors. I got it back and it happened again after booting the computer up and waiting for a couple of minutes.
I ran the Apple Hardware Test and I got an error message 3 times on the video RAM. So I brought it back to CompUSA and they said it must be the video card.
They replace my video card and then they had the same problem still. They ran a looped hardware test and around the 50th loop they got a kernel pannick when it was testing the HD. They got the same error to repeat twice so they replaced my HD (ouch). They loaded OS 10.4 on it and ran hardware tests and couldn't get an error. So I picked it up last night, turned it on, entered all my info in again and did the software update. After the update I had to restart and a minute later after booting up it locked up again and fans started kicking into gear. I didn't even have any other software loaded.
I called them because now it has been 1 month for my computer being down and they are sending me RAM to see if that fixes the issue. Not sure if it will.
I have since rebooted my machine and it hasn't locked up on me yet today. Of course it is random anyway. I am waiting on the RAM to come in this week, but this problem appears to be a mystery.
BTW... During the first episode of thiss when talking to Apple, they had me start up from the OS 10.4 DVD to do disk utility on it and the fans went crazy and they computer wouldn't load. Then they had to have me reboot holding apple+option and i was then able to choose the DVD to boot from and it was able to boot from the DVD... just wanted to added some more wierdness to this.

HP G42 Fan Running in High Speed and Noisy

I had a HP G42 i5 notebook. Recently I send my notebook for repair due to the graphic card problem. I encountered that the fan speed is running in high speed mode after I the repair. I asked the incharge and he told me that they had did the cleaning on the notebook, so the fan will run in high speed and making noise. I did told that person, it was silence before repair and the fan will only run in high speed mode when the notebook's got heat up. But now it's got into the high speed mode even during startup time.
So I would like to get some advice or comment on this. Is it normal that the notebook's fan speed is running in high speed and noisy since startup? Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry for the delay in my reply, as I have been out of the office since last Thur. The instructions would have been the same for your notebook, but not the same BIOS.
This document will guide you through updating your BIOS if you wish. Since the noise is reduced once Windows begins, I would not worry too much about this.

MacBook Pro can't recognize battery, fan is at high speed and computer functions really slow

My MacBook Pro suddenly won't recognize it's battery so I tried rmoving it's battery and put it back again. I can use it but there is still an (X) sign instead of the battery percentage on the upper right corner of my desktop. After this I turned on my laptop and all of a sudden the fan turned on on high speed and it became slow (by slow I mean really slow) even if I don't open/use anything on my computer because of this I went to an Apple Service Center and they tried to check if its because of the hard drive, RAM and all that stuff. They told me it's not because of those things but they also told me that maybe the wiring or the cable of the battery that connects to the computer is not working so I have to replace it. But for the fan and the slowing of my computer they don't know what's happening.
I really need help. Pleaseeeeeee. Thanks in advance.

Att high speed and time capsule?

Just upgraded to att high speed internet, can I also use time capsule? Wasn't aware that att internet was a modem and router together but bought time capsule for the backup capabilities.

There are several options from which to choose.
You can connect the Time Capsule to one of the Ethernet ports on the ATT modem/router and configure the Time Capsule for backup purposes only and use the wireless on the ATT modem/router. In this case, you would not enable the wireless on the Time Capsule.
Or, you can configure the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network and use that network.
If you elect this option, it would probably make sense to turn off the wireless on the ATT modem/router....since two wireless routers in close proximity can create interference issues.

Imac i5 late 2009 running OS X 10.8.4 and can't get FireWire connection to work

I have Imac i5 late 2009 running OS X 10.8.4 and can't get FireWire connection to work with LaCie external drive. I have gone through older posts and tried with no luck power cable and holding down start button for 15 seconds and restoring power and also removing power cable waitng 10 minutes replugging power cable holding down alt command P, R keys until second beep is heard. I know that LaCie drive and cable are working, they were connnected to another iMac without issues. What options do I have left to get FireWire to work? The System Report just says
FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec.

I did not mention in original post that when initially connected to the Firewire port the LaCie drive I can hear activity so the drive is getting power. Does this mean the Firewire port may not be physically damamged and there may be options for resetting? Are there any 3rd party software repair programs worth buying for diagnostics and repair of the FireWire port?

Left and right fans running at different very different speeds on a 15" i5 Macbook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro i5 and it seems to be heating up a bit more than the first couple of months I had it. I also have istat which shows my left fan at around ~250 rpm's. The right fan is running at around ~2500 to 3500 rpm's. Is this normal or is this something I should take in to a genius bar to take a look at?
The temps of the CPU run from about 50 to 80. Any help or gudance is appreciated.

250 seems to me to indicate an issue - not sure if I have seen ANY computer fan purposely running at that speed - could be the fan or the sensor that monitors the fan is faulty. If high temps are being seen then faulty fan could lead to more serious issues.

High speed and Low Speed CAN

This is my first time to use CAN.
I have LabVIEW 2010 and LabVIEW FPGA
I have NI 3110 Dual-Core Industrial Controller with Windows OS, NI 9157, NI 9852 CAN Low Speed Module and NI 9853 CAN High Speed Module to be used to monitor the CAN messages from an ECU unit.
The connection is done as the following:
·         The High speed CAN is connected to the NI-CAN 9853 (Port 0)
·         The low speed CAN is connected to the NI-CAN 9852 (Port 0)
·         The baud rate of the 9853 is 500kbps
·         The baud rate of the 9852 is 50kbps
·         Both modules are set to “Listen Only”
·         “Module Clock” in both modules is set to 20MHz
·         CAN networks are 29-bit and 11-bit.
My consideration is to read all the messages from both modules without losing any message. Below is a picture from the block diagram on the FPGA target, is this the best way to read CAN messages from both modules? Also, could you please suggest what is the best way to read the messages on Host vi?

The way that you have proposed to use the CAN module to monitor the BUS is a bad idea. We have a prebuilt driver that will do most of this work for you. You will need to download and install the NI-CAN 2.7.3 and then you will be able to use the example finder. In the example finder look for.
The example finder is accessed through the Help menu.

Shoot in high speed and slow down in FCP

Hi All
I’m planning to shoot footage HD that I would like to slow down almost 20% but I’ll rather avoid the jitter that usually shows on the video. I understood that I have to shoot in high speed. Do you have any suggestion of how to do this…
I was thinking to change the shutter speed of my camera but I’m not sure how much I have to change it.
I’m shooting with a Sony FX1

To shoot at a 'high speed', you need a camera such as the Varicam that will record at higher frame rate than 30fps. I believe the HVX-200 will allow you to overcrank things a bit (60p).
Otherwise, something like Shake will do a much better job slowing footage than FCP.

I just upgraded to a new iMac running OS X 10.8.2 and can't scan from by Brother MHC 7820N. Printer works. I reinstalled the scanner driver but when I try to scan, the scanner doesn't connect to the imac. Image Capture says no scanner connected.

You might try a third party scanner software. Printer manufacturers are terrible about keeping their products updated. I'd recommend VueScan, you can get a trial version here and if it works and you like it you can purchase it.

Does Firefox 13 run in a multi-threaded mode and can it utilize quad-core processors?

When purchasing a new PC, one chooses between dual-core vs. quad-core processors and some people claim that Firefox run in a mulch-threaded mode and treats each tab as a separate process and that it can fully utilize the advantage of a quad-core processor. Is that true?

Firefox doesn't treat each tab as a separate process. While this may be a feature sometime in the future, I don't know of any plans to introduce it anytime soon. Obviously, buying a quad core processor is going to be significantly faster than a dual-core, and your browser is usually less resource intensive than many other programs. I wouldn't use it as your purchasing decision. Firefox will run equally well on a dual-core or a quad-core, but windows and other programs will run better with 4 cores.

Gathering data at high speed and then proccessing it

Using LV 8.0 I have to read two channels 16000 times at 10Khz. I used an express vi that feeds directly to a write to spreadsheet vi and it works nicely. However I would like to use a polynomial that converts the voltage of one of the channels to a temperature. When I put the polynomial ( in a formular box) in between the express vi and the spreadsheet write by using split and merge data functions everything slows down and wont capture all the data. So I was thinking about using a sequence structure and reading the data in one frame and processing it in the next one. So, I was wondering in what form to pass the data to the second frame, building an array and passing it through a sequence local only gives me one line.
Any suggestions will be welcomed.

Using a sequence structure won't solve your problem. All that you're doing is moving the location where it's going to slow down. Besides, you don't need a sequence structure to enforce execution order.
It sounds like you need to separate the data collection and the data processing so they operatate independently. This can be done in many ways. A queue is one basic way to do this. What is the purpose of the polynomial application? Is it being displayed on a graph? Are you saving it to file? Can you provide a snapshot of the code, or better yet, upload it?

Problem with itunes update. I am running OSX v 10.4.11 and can't get itunes to update. I had itunes 9.1.1 and when I tried ask it to update it said there was no update. sent old itunes to trash and now apple site itunes download is not working. help...

From Apple website when I go to itunes update to 10.3 I am not seeing the left column to download itunes 10.3. Does anyone else have this problem? I tried yesterday as well. Today, I threw my itunes 9.1.1 in the trash and emptied it... and then rebooted. What am I doing wrong?

What operating system are you running? I doubt it's an iPhone OS on a Mac Mini, but if you meant to choose 10.4 then you're out of luck. http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ At the bottom of the left hand column on this page, you'll see it requires OS X 10.5 or higher.

OMA Download process running wild and can't be stopped

About a week ago, my Bionic phone started staying hot and using battery power like crazy. I installed an app to track processes, etc, and OMA Download (PID 1046, android.process.media) is sucking 48% of my CPU at all times. I kill it and it comes back within seconds and keeps using CPU and battery like mad. Sometimes it comes back as another process, but they all say "android.process.media". I have uninstalled 99% of my third party apps, I have uninstalled all kinds of updates to apps that I cannot fully uninstall, nothing seems to kill this creature. Anyone have any solutions? Am I going to have to save/backup and then do a massive reset and then rebuild? if so, how do you do the hard reset? Also, I have tried to start in Safe Mode by using the volume button, but it never works. is there another way to start in Safe Mode?

You are absolutely correct in knowing that placing the phone in Safe Mode or performing a Hard Reset is a great way to help determine the nature of the processes on your phone. I'm running Logic Pro 9.0.2 and can't upgrade to 9.1 or 9.1.6

Software update says I don't need an update; the 9.1 updater says I don't need it, and 9.1.6 says my version isn't eligible because it's not 9.0.x. My OS is 10.7.2. Any suggestions?

Just found the answer in another thread- the existing app to be upgraded has to be called "Logic Pro" with no version number in the title, or the installer won't recognize it. Uncharateristically bad UX for Apple, but an easy fix. Thanks to the folks who answered this question in the past!
