FCP 10.8 freezing, did hook up with fcp tec, now worse .

Having dramas, FCP 10.8 was freezing, rang help, its funny they call it that, contact said as well as having a unsupported camera, wrong, Sony nxcam is on the list. Tec said to do hookup to check system. Rang back spoke to another tec told me about proxy video so started to convert library, converted 1hr footage no worries but now drop bow says "fcp cannot save changes to projects or events..." and closes down. restart same box appears. Any body have any ideas I live 5 hours from nearest apple store no local help, phone help only Mon to Fri.

Open Activity Monitor and launch FCP. begin editing your project and check to see what happens in two areas of RAM; free memory and page-outs.
As Tom mentioned, 4 GB of RAM isn't very much and it's possible it's being depleted during your editing process. But I've edited on plenty of laptops with FCP and, while they aren't necessarily snappy in everything I ask them to do, neither do I get freezes unless something is wrong (like corrupt preferences or media). And the proxy suggestion you got from the tech was more of a work-around than a solution. IMO, unless you're editing multiple streams or you have a slow drive, you should be OK with Optimized or Original.

Project in FCP 6.1.4 can be opened with FCP 6.0?

I have this man offering a job to finish the edit of a project edited in FCP 6.1.4 but I have 6.0, I need to know before I come back to him whether this is possible or if I will have problems? Many thanks

There is no Final Cut Pro 6.1.4 - I would imagine he is referring to FCP 5.1.4 which can be opened just fine on version 6.0. However, if you save the project and return it to him, he will be unable to open it. The way around this issue is to go to File > Export > XML.

I did a trial on CS6, then did not continue with it, but now my CS4 bridge is malfunctioning and raw has completely stopped working.

I tried support chat, but they just said to try here. I bought CS4 under an old defunct email address and under my new address I do not even have a product registered. Adobe knows it is purchased in my name
and I have the registration number, but since it is not my current ID they have decided to give me the brush off.

After exporting on FCP, quicktime video freezes with perfect audio.

First off, this is my first video I've exported with FCP.
I made the video, edited and everything with no problem. When I exported, however, a 10 second clip would turn every color of the rainbow and flash, but the audio was perfect.
After researching a little bit I used compressor and it somewhat solved my problem. It went from colors, to freezing. Again the audio is fine but the video freezes for the duration of the clip.
I'm lost at this point.

Without any information regarding original material codec, seqence settings (codec) and output format (codec), it's just generally useless guesswork.

Sony DSR-25 not found with FCP 5.1.2

Hi @ all,
I updated to FCP 5.1.2 to fix a dublicate bug with a Sony XDCam HD in 5.1.1 (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3269745#3269745)
This Problem was solved, but now i can't connect my Sony DSR-25 with Firewire to Mac. I have only one Firewire Onboard Slot and in 5.1.1 the DSR-25 worked fine. FCP doesn't finde the Deck
So did anyone have an intention or an idea what the problem could be with 5.1.2 ? Or did anyone has used a DSR-25 with FCP 5.1.2 already?

This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem with FCP (if that's what it is):
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.

Follow the instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time - it's quite safe but you must Trash the Receipts AND re-install QT from the link provided.
If the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Don't use iMovie for capturing - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.

Non-functioning cross-dissolves with FCP 5.1 on intel

I am having trouble with FCP 5.1 running on my macbook. My cross dissolves work when used between two clips but as a fade to black, it doesn't work, or rarely does. I have 8 hours to finish this project to be showed at a wedding reception tomorrow. I've tried trashing the prefs and it did nothing, i emptied all my render files, checked for updates and nothing makes a difference. Please help, I'm runnng out of time.

Very strange...and not discounting your proficiency with FCP.
When you place the dissolve end on edit, the dissolve shows up on the end of the clip? but then the clip never dissolves to black?
Yes, the dissolve will show up on the end of the clip, but it plays back as if it is not there. This happens whether it is rendered or not. If I use a cross dissolve between two clips, it plays back perfectly. 'Some' of the clips will dissolve to black but the majority play back as though the transition is not there.
Any chance you're working with a 'favorite' dissolve that may have it's begin/end parameters adjusted?
Tried that and went back and got the original transition and made sure everything was set how it should be. I thought for sure it owuld be the prefs, but no such luck.
Any chance you've got your video layers scrolled downwards and there's a clip on a lower track?
No, I have made sure there is only one track with nothing underneath.

Rocketraid 2322 conflict with FCP 5.1.2?

Hi all.
I have a MacPro 2.66 with 8 gig of RAM and the latest FCP 5.1.2 and OS 10.4.8 (I was a fool with that one). I also have a RocketRaid 2322 card (in slot 3) and a Blcakmagic Decklink HD Extreme card (Slot 4). I have a Highpoint X4 enclosure (mini SAS to infiniband) with 4 Seagate 320s in a hardware Raid 5.
When open a project up and play or edit the sequence, all is beautiful. (Footage is DVCPRO HD from P2 cards, now reimported via new FCP) However, if I click on anything that has an effect (slo mo, green key, etc) and scrub (sometimes just the click alone) it wil FREEZE. Completely, no passing GO.
Now, when I open a project up and use an internal drive (not RAID) all is well.
Also, tried using Silverkeeper to move many gigs of video to the external RAID and it FROZE. Silverkeeper works fine with internal to FW drives.
Had one incident where FCP on launch FROZE.
I called Highpoint and they're stumped. They said they'll look into it further. I sent my info.
I reseated the card, made sure it had the driver (there's only 1 that works for MacPro) verified the drives, replaced RAM.
Any ideas short of sending the card and drives back?

I can capture with iMovie 6, but not with FCP 6.0 ('no data from device')

I didn't have any problem with FCP 5, but am getting nowhere with FCP 6 using the same settings (I think). FCP seems to see the camcorder, but can't control it and, even if I manually start the camera, reports 'no data from device' when I do a 'Capture Now'. Device control isn't critical, but I'd sure like to find out why it doesn't see the data stream from the camera (Sony HDR-HC7 / FW400). I must be missing a setting some place, but sure can't find it. On the other hand, I have full device control and zero dropout capture with iMovie (exact same hardware configuration). Any ideas?

Partitioning a MyBook to use with fcp... can it be Mac Extended and FAT32?

Hi, I'm a film student and a little while ago I just bought a MyBook 1T external hard drive (USB only).
I'm looking into reformatting my hard drive because when capturing with fcp (straight to the hard drive) I keep getting an error at around 9 minutes.
I did some research and found out that its because its formatted to FAT32 instead of Mac Extended.
However, I do a lot of work with PC's and transferring files on my hard drive and I read that once formatted to Mac Extended my hard drive would not work on a PC.
I was wondering if I partitioned my MyBook would I be able to make one part Mac Extended (for my capture scratch files) and one part FAT32 (that I could use like a regular hard drive for files between Mac and PC)?
Also just to be clear once the hard drive is Mac Extended I can still keep other files besides capture scratch files in that portion of the hard drive, it's just I can't transfer those particular files to PC. (Some of the website forums I read made me more confused haha)
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

NTFS does not have the file size limit silliness that FAT has so you should be OK in theory.
Run a couple of test captures and see what you think.
USB is generally not a good interface for video as it delivers data in bursts. You need a constant stream as provided by FireWire or SATA drives. If you are working with low bandwidth video codecs such as DV, you might get away with it for a while.

Experimenting with FCP/ Real time rendering question

Hello, I am preparing to purchase a Mac Pro and spent some time at the local mac affiliate store playing with FCP and motion.
In fcp I took two clips and dropped them in the timeline, adding the 3d cube transition, and some filters to both clips.
I was looking at performance of real time rendering on teh base config of the MP I plan on purchasing.
I then added another clip above these two, intending on dropping the opacity to further push the RTR (real time rendering). This clip overlapped the transition of the two other clips in v1 and v2.
When attempting to play the timeline the viewer window now said "Not Rendered"
My question is:
Is there a limit to how many tracks can be run under the RTR? Why did I get this message?
My main reason of the move to a Mac Pro is to get away from constantly pre-rendering.

Sounds like you know what you're doing and what you expect. A factor that has not been mentioned yet, besides RAM, prefs and drive speeds, is your video format.
Also, the new rev of FCP is taking advantage of tons of processing overhead, vastly increasing the amount of stuff you can do in real time. However, real time is largely a preview operation, regardless of the machine or system, unless you are using proprietary codecs, such as Media 100, that might be hardware-assisted. Output is almost always a rendering issue, multiple stacked or processed layers require the creation of new media.
The only way you're going to be able to decide if Macintosh and FCP are right for you is to demo thoroughly and that requires using your own footage.

I own a 5d and I love it -I am amazed at the video quality and the 7D looks to be even better -I was reading a couple of your past post and - u said u have tested the footage on both FCP 2 and 3-
Well I have too and I thought it ran better under 10.5.6 than on snow. Reason being it the scrub function. I have a MACbook pro 2.33 model and I could scroll though footage fast on 10.5.6 and now on Snow it is real jerky -
I did a clean install of everything on Snow- Im just not sure I am happy with FCP 7 on Snow -will FCP 7 run on 10.5.6 ?
I have just seen some strange things with 7 and Snow -I do love the new color though-
also one other thing -I have been having this "preparing for display output" message come up every so ofter when I have multiple layers in FCP 7 and its annoying -never had it come up in FCP 2
any advice

about your question, I'm running successfully FCP7 on 10.5.8 and I don't see why it shouldn't work fine also on 10.5.6.
From the Apple website, FCS min requirements:
- Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later
- QuickTime 7.6 or later

Problems with FCP and System 10.5

I have found an issue that has me pulling at my hair, and I don't have that much to pull.
I repaired permissions and experienced quite a wait and it seems as though it is doing nothing but it is working so don't let that bother you I just waited it out and all was well. My big problem, after installing FCP Studio 2, it does not read my FCP projects that I had saved.
I get an error message saying: File Error: Wrong Type.
Now here is a strange thing. One and only one of my former projects will open in FCP. I really don't remember, but I believe it was the only one I made after the most recent ProApps update from Apple (Believe it was Pro Application Support 4.0.2) anyway it is the one that updated my system when I ran Software Update after installing Studio and all my other Apple programs.
I have no idea if this would cause the problem as the other projects were Not made with this latest update installed but I can't believe that it would.
Any ideas? I really need my previous projects back or I will be spending a great deal of time trying to re-create them. (that is not making me a happy camper)

I may have spoken too soon. I have a mirror image of my previous system that is bootable and I thought I could boot from that disk, open each project and save it out to the new 10.5 system disk.
I did boot back into 10.4 and brought up FCP but I got the same response from the program that I did in the new system:
File Error:Wrong Type
Now I am at a loss...anyone have any idea and could it be the Pro Application Support 4.0.2 that I had installed?

Nearly.... I upgraded to 10.4.7 and QT 7.1.2 recently, and my old G4/450 Sawtooth that used to capture reliably as a second machine (while I carried on editing on a more up to date G4) has now stopped capturing properly. I get all sorts of crashes, incorrect timecodes or unexpected quits with FCP 4.5 now, since the update.
(PS: Did you really mean 10.4.6?)
BTW: Can anybody offer ME any advice?
