FCP 5.1.1 Update Tip

This is a tip for my fellow FCP newbies out there who may have had trouble updating FCP to 5.1.1 via Software Update. I was unable to get SU to recognize that FCP needed this update and tried a number of tricks recommended to me in these boards. (Removing receipts, etc.) Ultimately, what solved the problem was this: I had moved all of my FCS components into a folder within my Applications section. By doing this, it somehow stopped SU from recognizing the existence of the program. I temporarily moved my FCS programs to the root Application location and, voila, it was able to update them. Again, this is just a tip for a problem that I knew drove me bonkers.

if you actually don't have ver. 5.1, but 5.0 -> you can't upgrade to 5.1.4.

It was possible few months ago. Now, the only upgrade you can do is to FCS 2.
But if you have 5.1 ver. you can upgrade from Apple/Software Upgrade or here (after login): http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/download/

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This works for some users. Not sure why.
Go to Settings>General>Date and Time> Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead by about a year.Then see if you can connect to the store.

FCP 6.0.4 update problem

Hi, I seem to be having the same/similar issue that a few have had. I have a MBP running FCP 6.0.1, but can't update to 6.0.4. I have tried updating the Pro Apps through Apple's website, but I'm unable to get the Pro Apps 2008-02 update specifically; it only brings up the most recent 2008-03 updates. I've done all the 2008-03 updates and I have QT 7.5.5. I am not sure what else I can do to get the update for 6.0.4. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Does anyone know of a way to find the previous Pro Apps update, so I can get 6.0.4? Please help

I think I've explored all the threads that pertain to this issue. I'm wondering now if I just need to move my FCP app from the folder it's in? I don't have my MBP on me, but I'll check out the FCP app's current location, and see if I need to move it. Where should/do I need to move the FCP app to?
I also saw that someone had tried running the Software Update twice???, and it seemed to work. I think I've run it about 4 times and no luck. Could it be due to the FCP app still being in the Applications folder? Where does it need to go specifically? Again, please help!

Thanks! I moved FCP to the Apps folder and ran my Software Update again. It was a bit confusing, since it asked me to download/install Pro Apps 2008-03 again (I had already done that one awhile ago). But then I opened FCP and it showed 6.0.4! Amazing what a simple little move will do!

Sony HVR-M25E not recognized anymore in FCP 6.0.3 update

Hello,
The HVR-25ME is no longer recognized for Print to video.
At First I thought i might be a Leopard Problem but it's the same in Tiger.
The HVR-M25E Sony HDV recorder was recognized with 6.0 but no longer in 6.0.3.
Any ideas?

Wipe your hard drive and reinstall your cloned version of the system disk that contained the version of FCP before you updated. If you don't have such a thing, now you know why we recommend that you should.
If 6.0.3 truly broke your deck connection, you will need to erase the system disk and reinstall OSX and your apps. Stop at the last working configuration.
Be sure to clone the drive before you erase. There may be things there you'll want later.

FCP 10.0.1 update now crashes every time I launch it!

FCP update now crashes every time I launch it! Won't even open a project I started last week with version 10.0.0.
I have a deadline at work so I've now got a big problem! I'm trying to give the new and supposedly improved FCPX a shot but this app is turning out to be a real hack. What other professional video editing software do you guys use? Anyone use Premier Pro? I have Premier pro and think I should probably start my new projects in it. As I said....this app is a real mess.
FYI: Same problem for my 1 year old MacBook Pro (8G ram, i7 processor) AND my Mac Pro (16G ram, 2 x 3GHz quad core processors, 4-1TB hardrives.

I don't know who these friends are, but they're certainly misinformed and they don't appear to be doing you any favours.
There are a great number of professional editors who have used Final Cut Pro since version 4 - but took the trouble to
a. Find out the system and install requirements for FCP X
b. Watch professional tutorials such as Ripple Training and actually LEARN how to use this ground breaking new application.
They (and I) are having very few issues with FCP X - especially since the update.
If you're getting crashes, autosave problems etc, there is more than likely some conflict on your system drive.
Create a new (admin) user on your Mac system and try FCP X from there.
I did this, and FCP X worked perfectly on the new account, meaning there was definitely a conflict on my existing system.
To be absolutely certain my MacPro's system was squeaky clean, I then did a clean reinstall (not TimeMachine) and FCP X has worked reliably ever since.
FCP X application should be in your Applications folder and ideally, your project and events should all be on an external HD and not on your Mac system drive.
I have around 4000 clips distributed between six events at the moment and FCP X is coping very well most of the time.
It helps to work without the waveforms displayed as these slow things down considerably.
Do you have FC Studio or a version of FCP on the same drive partition as FCP X?
This is what Apple say on their current web page on installation practice:
"It is strongly recommended that you install Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, and Compressor 4 on a startup disk that does not have Final Cut Studio (2009) already installed. Use Apple's preferred installation procedure when upgrading one version of Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Studio to the next. This procedure is not unique to Final Cut Pro X."
They do go on to say "if you must" have the two on the same partition, FCS must be located in a different folder - but I would have thought the words "strongly recommended" and "if you must" speak for themselves.

FCP 10.1.1 Updating Projects Stall on Import

Hi All - I've read a bunch of other threads, and can't find this particular issues happening elsewhere.
I have done a similar proces to others where I've stupidly clicked 'update all' before I realised what was happening...
I've tried using EM X with mixed results, and have managed to import half of my projects.
The other half, always fail to import... They just hang on update.
I've tried trashing prefs, clean folders, restarts, even removing project timelines from within projects, so there's only one timeline - and these projects always seem to hang. Just can't get them into FCP X 10.1.1
I'd appreciate any help! - This is driving me nuts.

Hi Al & Russ, Thanks for your help here.
The Events are stored on an internal drive, as we shoot with RED, it's not feasible to store everything on one drive. Having said that, the files have always been on this drive, and we've not had any issues under 10.0.9
I've attached some pics below to show you the drive setup, along with a sample a projects I'm trying to update (doing them one at a time as they need separate libraries) I also have the EMX open to show you that we're working with one project, and then finally the FCPX window that stalls at this point (for ever)
So Russ, when I have been able to import / update the files on 3 other curent projects, I have kept them (Saved to Old Files folder - you may be able to see it)
Hope this sheds some light - love to know why everyone else in the world dosn't have any problems except me.

(Note: I have tried using EMX to open, and doing manually open and updates - with dumping prefs, restarts and trashing reguslarly)

Can't import audio files in FCP after snow leopard update

i've recently updated to snow leopard. and i'm running Final Cut Pro 6.0.6
i opened a .fcp project i created a long time ago. i tried to import a .aif file and final cut crashes. i converted the .aif file to a .mp3 file. tried to import it, and final cut crashed.
i then went and deleted the preference files for final cut pro, reopened final cut, tried importing both files again, it still crashes.
does anyone have a legitimate answer for why this is happening?

I agree that you shouldn't use MP3 files with FCP, the manual tells you that somewhere If I recall properly, but it shouldn't cause Final Cut to crash, at least that has never been my experience, it has just caused a skipping problem, or not playing the complete song.
I don't really understand wht a FW800 drive or the amount of RAM have to do with it, it would sure be interesting to hear your comments on that.
However, in all due respect, to make the statement that one should NEVER run Final Cut Pro 6 on Snow Leopard seems pretty "out there" would you be so kind as to provide your rationale for such a drastic statement as that. Has there been anything official from Apple along those lines?

How/where can I download FCP 5.1.2 updater?

As most people know by now, FCP 5.1.3 breaks critical plugins like Automatic Duck Colorista. I absolutely, positively need these for my workflow.
Why the **** did Apple completely pull the 5.1.2 updater off the website? I updated to 5.1.3 because I was excited to see that it fixed one of my major issues (the stills & nested sequence issue), but Iʻm now livid that in doing so, they broke an even bigger component of FCP.
Now before Shane Ross replies to this post with a link to his (awesome) blog, where he preaches about saving local copies of each FCP updater, I have to say that I wasnʻt that smart to do just that...but I donʻt need to be admonished for my dumbdumbness, i just need to get up and running again.
Can any kind soul provide a download link for the 5.1.2 updater?

Once Apple posts the new update, old ones are removed. Stinks. If you ask me, they should have ALL updated versions posts. Just makes sense.
Sorry that I posted what you should have done. I am hoping that I can show you what to do in the future. And I really wish that I had a link to post that would contain the 5.1.2 upgrade. And the 5.1.1, as the 5.1.2 upgrade breaks the P2 import option for many many people.

Getting Mysterious Wheel Spin (Hang) with FCP, and iChat after updates

I have been running Adobe final cut Studio Pro (FCP) and Adobe CS2 for a while without a hitch. Over the past 3 days I updated to the latest updates (6.0.3) FCP. No problems. BTW on all the updates, I downloaded the update then installed it. I then downloaded and installed the 10.5.2 update. All seemed OK. I then installed Adobe CS3 Web Standard upgrade. Discovered I was missing a serial number so I stopped the installation. All still seemed OK. This morning I decided to start over with Adobe CS3, so I took all the CS3 programs in the application folder, moved them to the trash and then emptied the trash. Almost immediately after I started getting very strange actions with the FCP suite. I would start soundtrack PRO, and export an xml file to FCP, FCP would present the splash screen and then hang.Cann't kill it nothing. I had to reboot the system. Then I would sometimes get the same problem just starting sound track PRO. Still puzzled, I started iChat. the first time it worked, but then the second time it hungs (wheel spin) trying to start up. Each time I have to reboot the system to clear it out. I thought maybe it was the Adobe CS3 programs I deleted. I ran the install and it won't re-install the applications because it reports the programs are installed, but in fact they are deleted. I am about to wipe the disk and start over, but that means loosing a couple of days reloading everything.
don't have a clue what to do. Anyone have any thoughts ideas???

FWIW, and I'm sure you know this, but the MacBook is not an officially supported platform for the Final Cut Studio apps:

That said, lots of people use FCP on a MacBook without any issues ... yours seem to specific to your machine rather than a widespread problem. Are you able to replicate any of these problems on any other machine?

Just because a thread has a quarter of a million views, or several thousand posts, does not mean it is anymore a systemic issue or a lemon issue. It helps to isolate the issue on a case by case basis to determine if the problem can be fixed. The assumption that by polling or petitioning you can help Apple make an update to fix your individual issue is prone to great fallacies. Not that you might not be able to do it, but below you will find out other means of asking Apple to fix a problem. I've found some Apple technicians don't take these boards seriously, while others do. What this board is helpful in doing is finding out if someone has resolved your particular issue on their own, and what steps to take in resolving that issue. As a frequent user who comes to this board, that's where I think anyone reading this board should focus their efforts on. to address such service issues. This is a forum for addressing technical inquiries about how things work or if things
can be made to work on your system.
8. Polls asking for a feature to be added/removed are generally frowned upon, as well as polls about

FCP X crashing after update to 10.0.1

I just updated to 10.0.1. This afternoon, after I updated it, I did some minor edits to a few projects without any problem. Now, whenever I go to open it, it crashed after loading both windows and before I even press anything. I've tried restarting my computer and at this point am unsure what the next course of action should be. Any suggestions??

Actually, I was able to reslove the issue. I opened up FCPX with all my external hard drives off. Then after FCPX was up I turned on my externals, and now Final Cut recognizes the drives and things seem to be working fine again. Still not sure what caused the problem in the first place tho.

FCP 5.1.1 update: Any benefits for PPC G5 users ?

The data sheet for the update mentions specific fixes for intel based macs but has no mention of PPC G5 Macs, so I was wondering if there was any need to install the update on my PPC G5.

Issue with Import Panasonic P2 and 720p/24PN Footage Resolved
OR NOT
I just did the entire 5.0 to 5.1.1 crossgrade/update, and it did NOT fix the issue with duplicating frames when using rendered P2 material.
A bit more explanation...
We're doing a project shot with the Panasonic P2 - 720p-24fps. Whenever the material in the timeline needs to be rendered, it does not reference the correct frame, and I wind up with a duplicate frame.
Let's say I have a 5 second shot, with a subtitle appearing at 2 seconds in. Frames 1-48 are clean, and frame 49 - 120 have a subtitle. When using realtime playback, everything is fine - but when I render the subtitle, frame 48 is duplicated, and all of the subtitled frames are off by one.
Sam thing happens if you color correct, or do anything involving rendering. Anyone else having this issue? Any known workarounds?

Trouble downloading FCP v6.0.5 update

I am running v6.0 right now and want to update to v6.0.5. After a quick search, I discovered I need to download Pro Apps Updates 2008-004. When I click the download button for 2008-004 (https://swdlp.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/SoftwareDownloadApp.woa/1122/wo/Ig6HS ItQp1yORtbr0NL0h0/3.5) it takes me to the Final Cut Studio 2 Updates page. However, after entering my serial number, I am taken to the Pro Apps Updates 2008-005, which does not have the update for v6.0.5 in it. Is there any way to download the 2008-004 update?

When you put stuff on your drive using Apple's Installer, you will sometimes be given an option where it goes. Productivity software generally belongs in the Applications folder by default.
Installer also places a bill of materials (.pkg file) in the Library/Receipts folder.
The .pkg file contains information about the version number and where the application is located.
Updaters look at that file to see where they should copy themselves, if the updater then finds nothing at that location, the update will not happen.

IOS 5 Update tips:

Ok for all you having problems with the update here are some things to do:
Start off by closing down all you other programs down on you computer and let itunes be the only one running. Do not interupt the update.
Be patient. Getting frustrated makes things worse for something simple. Your phone is stuck on the recovery screen / connect to itunes, dont get mad and start cursing apple. Something as simple as lost communication between you computer and i-device will screw up the who process. Take a breath and give it a minute or so to redo itself. Your dealing with top end equipment that needs to see proper code to function correctly. Also you are not the only person update to iOS 5. Just picture how many iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 were sold and everyone is trying to update at the same time. BE PATIENT!!!!
Also people were stating this morning that it was taking them 2-5 hours to download the update, while it took me only 4 minutes. Your internet connection speed plays a part in the update as well as your computers performance.
If all else fails, it may take a couple hard resets in a row to get things back on track.

Bios update tips for gt70 one-276

Ok so the instructions looked simple enough on the website but I am still confused. I bought my laptop before windows 8 came out. Once it was available I did a clean install. So far so good. Now I want to update the bios but am stuck trying to figure out which to install. When I tried to install the win8 bios the secure boot option is not available in the current bios. So does that mean I need to install the win 7 bios since my laptop came with win 7 bios? Logic suggests I use the win8 bios since I am on win 8 now.

I won't deny it's rather misleading.
But in the end, asking is the easiest thing to do.
Personally, I wouldn't worry about the BIOS too much. The changes to the GT70 bios have been so minor it's hardly even worth upgrading honestly. The EC on the other hand....now THAT I would consider.
