FCP X - why it is great

Hi
I have just started my second significant editing project with Final Cut Pro X and I feel that this is truly a great application for editing video, in fact it represents a major step forward for video editors.
Before I go any further I feel that anyone who is contemplating purchasing FCP X should first check that technically it meets their requirements. FCP X does not fit into a “production facility” environment as easily as FCP 7. So, check whether or not these limitations will be a problem.
If you decide to buy FCP X then you will, I believe, have joined in the future of video editing and left the past behind.
If you have been using FCP 1-7 or any other video editor FCP X will seem very strange. Please read the Help. After a while you will become familiar with the way it works. Then you will start to get fluid with it. As you become more acquainted with this application you will find yourself editing faster and with more accuracy and quality than ever before.
You will find that you can scan through your imported materials (what at one time would have been called “rushes”) and make decisions about them much more effectively than before.
You will find that you can place edited clips into your timeline with more ease and accuracy than before.
Once you get the hang of “compound clips” you will find that your timeline will be more logical and easier to deal with than that of other editors.
You will be applying video transitions, fades in and out etc etc much more easily and effectively than before.
The relationships between all different video/audio transformations, animations or transitions and the audio is much easier to manage than with other video editors.
You will see that there are “experts” in these Apple forums who seem to be pouring scorn on this application.
As I have said before it is important to take notice of how FCP X will fit into your situation technically speaking, so the complaints concerning xml export or multi-cam editing might be relevant to you.
However what is not relevant is the suggestion that this is an application for “noobs”, or other suggestions that you will not be a “real professional” if you use this application.
Please ignore this nonsense and check this application out.
I do not participate in online forums very much because I know very well that they are full of “experts” who wish to puff up their weak egos up, argue endlessly, and present themselves as “professionals” whatever that means.
I am very experienced in editing videos, as well as filming in general. If the "experts" don't wish to believe that it is not of concern to me.
If you download FCP X and have the humility to read the Help, find out about it, you will be richly rewarded, and you will start to wonder if these “experts” who are dissing this application have ever edited a video in their lives.

One slight point about Patrick's info.
Since version 10.0.3, FCP X has been able to edit multicam and most people agree that it does so in a far superior and easy way.
I would also suggest that as a beginner you completely ignore the "Help" menu as it can be very confusing.
Instead download these 2 hours of FREE video tutorials and you will see and learn exactly how to use FCP X in no time at all:-

Finally do not spend a penny on FCP X until you are sure it is right for you.
You can achieve this by downloading the FREE 30 DAY TRIAL:-

So within 30 minutes of reading this post you could have FCP X sitting on your desktop and be starting to edit with it  .  .  .  and all without spending a penny!
P.S. If you already have FCP 7 & and it does what you want, you should stick with it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

It is my understanding that Final Touch is much faster than daVinci.
    You are in error...
Depends on the operator and the machine. With a DaVinci you are going tape to tape and the colorist is coloring each shot. When they are done, then they press play and all their settings apply in real time as the tapes roll.
With Final Touch, you have to render your final product after you do all the coloring. Typically the render will take longer than it takes a tape to play, depending on the machines processor power. But still, 4-5 hours for a 30-60 minute show...darn slow. If you had the same colorist on both, Final Touch would be slower.
BUT...the advantage is that you color BEFORE you go to tape. So doing your texted and textless outputs are darn easy.

  • Sound on clips gets deleted after quiting FCP X, why?

Sound on some clips I imported from my GoPro gets deleted after I have quit the program and go back to it.  However, in the FCP X events folder, the original media still has the sound in the clip.  I do not understand why this is happening.
    Does anybody have any advice?

There are a couple of reasons why "physical reads" can exceed "logical reads" - one is a side effect of dynamic samplng, the other is a side effect of running dbms_stats. You could check the captured SQL to see if it offers any evidence for either of these activities during the snapshot interval.

  • Ghost clips appearing on FCP timeline-why?

every now and again in this edit, I'll drop a clip (say clip #1) on to the timeline, do a render at some point in the future, and then later move/delete clip #1.
Afterwards, when I play timeline on the canvas, the clip I deleted will show up again, overriding clips #3,4,5 that are ACTUALLY there. There are 4 active track on this edit (V1-4), and one that is disabled (V5). So there appears to be no clips other than #3,4,and 5. [I hope that's clear!]
When the ghost image plays, I can see all 5 tracks of video, and all audio tracks as well.
    Sequence info: 5V, 10A, 29.97 fps, 720x480, comp=DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, CCIR 601, field dom=lower (even), TC=source, TC rate=30.
This has happened 2 or three different times in this (large) edit. I just need to know why it's happening and how I can change things so it doesn't happen again!
    Cheers,
    chris

Sometimes FCP gets stuck on old render files, why, who knows. You can do any number of things to force a re-render of that clip or section of the timeline (lower then riase opacity, toggle the track off and on etc.) Or you may have to delete the render files using the Render Manager.

  • Why Touch is great + 1 Suggestion

I've had my 8g Touch 2 weeks now and I continue to be astonished at what it can do. It's really an ultra mobile computer.
Here are some reasons why I think Touch is great:
    1. Easy to learn and use.
    2. Small and fast, including applications and wifi.
    3. Remembers what you are doing without having to do saves.
    4. Web browsing with Safari is just outstanding on Touch.
    5. Stanza book reader and books are magnificent. It turns Touch into ebook reader.
    6. Face Melter is a great fun photo application.
    7. Stanza and Face Melter are just two applications that give an indication of other great applications to come.
    8. Screen is sharp and clear, and especially important to me, is how well text is displayed.
I have one suggestion for Apple and customers to consider for next Touch: Increase current screen size of 2x3 inches to 3x4 inches (or possibly even a little more) thus doubling screen area. Of course, next Touch will have more RAM and more power CPU.

Are you sure that mighty Apple cannot use almost existing Bluetooth protocols?
I tell you my point of view - Apple want all of us to use iPhones, but read my first post again and you will see that not everybody can or want to use Apple phones.
I'm not here to ruin something, I just want Apple to hear me. It can make Apple better - this let people use their iPhones and take all the best from their lifes.
Let's see this situation from the other side. Apple don't want listen to me as one of their clients and one day it makes me angry. One day it can be the biggest mistake of Apple. Why? My job is to develop my companies and destroy the others. Look at the Europe and answer me - does 19% overall growth and 3 more almost dead competitors is good result by one man? Why almost dead - because I wanna them live. Yea. it's a game for me.
Remember my words in a few month. Hey, Apple - I'm still on your side!
""who wants - looks for the possibilities, and who don't - search for the reasons""

  • My synchronized clips (audio and video) have lost their compound clip icon after I bought the full version of FCP X, why is that?

I have noticed a few changes to my FCP workflow after installing FCPX from the trial version I had before. I've noticed that when I sync audio and video files together via Clip > Synchronize Clips.. the icon at the top left corner of the thumnail is no longer there as it was in the trial version. I also have to right click and select 'open in timeline' to work on the files. I much preferred clicking on the thumnail's icon in the event library and it opening up in the timeline. Also Stabilization is missing from my video effects! How odd.

I no longer have the trial version this is the point. Bought the 'release' version about 6 weeks ago. Still doesn't explain why the stabilization option randomly appears for some clips and not for others. Also would like to know if I can get the compound icon back on the thumbnails for synchonized clips.

  • CANON 5D MARK III TO FCP 7-WHY ARE THERE LINES IN MY VIDEO?

Hi there, so Ive just upgraded from the T2i to Canon 5D Mark III and this is the first time I'm importing footage to final cut. I have FCP 7 (Mac computer) and my video files are 1920x1080, h264 codec shot at 30 fps (29.97). Previously, when importing from the T2i, I used MPEG Streamclip to convert my video files to Apple Prores 422, and then import those compressed files into FCP 7, with field dominance being UPPER, pixels SQUARE. I never had an issue of quality loss or lines through my viewer and canvas using these settings. However, after attempting to do the same with my footage from the Mark III, I got lines through my footage. After researching a bit, I was convinced that the way to eliminate the problem was to download the 5DTORGB app for $50. This has not fixed my problem! Have tried multiple combinations of different field dominance settings and nothing is working. Is this an interlacing problem? I attempted to catch a screenshot but everytime I pause the video or take a shot, the lines do not show...I do not know what is going on! My original mov files are fine, it is only once I convert and import to final cut that they get these little lines... I am desperate for answers, please someone help!!!

You need to ask this on the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • FCP 7 Why do I get these horizontal lines on my playback?

I'm working in Final Cut with 1920x1080 Apple Pro Res footage. For some reason I keep getting these
horizontal lines when I playback footage on my timeline or viewer. What is this?

When I export to quicktime there are no horizontal lines. It's only a problem in FCP.
So when I transcode my footage for FCP to Apple Pro Ress 422 (HQ) I should click 'deinterlace video' rather than 'interlace scaling' Is that what you're saying?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Why CallsAnsweredToHalf is greater than CallsHandledHalf in daily report?

    I am using Cisco 8.5.2.
I understand the definition of CallsHandled and CallsAnswered. They may not always equal because it may counted in the next reporting interval.
However, why it doesn't equal in a daily report?
Checked Termination_Call_Detail has 14 calls which equals to CallsHandled. But, CallsAnswered is 16. It is quite strange....what is the extra 2?

Can someone explain above situation, please?

I have upgraded my MAC OS to 10.6.8.
Final Cut Pro 5.0 still runs great, but Soundtrack Pro 1.01 opens, but operates at a glacial pace.  It does not functionally operate.
What can be done to remedy this?

Depending on the configuration of the computer hardware and software
you may need to consider upgrade the RAM by installing more capacity.
Also, in the same vane, choose to consider upgrade the hard drive to
one of faster transfer, such as SSD, hybrid, or fusion; if not already at
least 7200-RPM and not too full of saved content.
Since no information is given about the model build configuration of Mac
there may be other suggestions to make it work better. Usually an OS X
upgrade requires one to look at the hardware resources available to it.
The OS X works best with more memory: new higher capacity chips.
This may be possible, and they should be high quality from reputable
vender who has tested them on Apple in OS X, such as OWC or Crucial.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Why offer a great product when you have horrible customer service dept?

I have never dealt with an organization that didn't keep a call log of a simple issue that was never handled properly & that ultimately had me cut my ties with them. I was a excellent customer with a monthly payment of nearly $200. I guess I should've paid $100 more to be treated better. I love the products that they have to offer but if I have to go through so much grief, to get my order right then I'd be an idiot for staying with them, when it could happen again. You guys do not know how to handle, coordinate & facilitate your customers' issues. You reps. are horribly trained & do not know what they are doing. Can you believe that they had no record of any complaints by me when on several occasions & through many different means, I had made such complaints. It's so bad that I was suppose to get my service on a Saturday & today, Thursday, I am still without service. NO MORE! THE TIES ARE CUT! NO MORE HEADACHES!

I have great service.  Did u try factory reset?

  • Why, after many great burns, is part of audio now missing?

I edited in FCE HD, exported to QT (self contained & reference movies) and burned several successful DVD's in iDVD6 with chapters. I decided to add a 'behind the scenes' segment to my movie but it made the finished DVD pixaled at transitions, so I decided to add the 'behind the scenes' segment to the end of my movie timeline to save space. From that point on, part of my audio was dropped in the burn process, at the same exact point each time in my movie. I've since taken out the 'behind the scenes' but the problem persists. Nothing has changed to my knowledge. The audio on the timeline is one long clip since I've made it self-contained, so how is this even possible to cut out only a portion of the audio at the precise same spot each time? I thought it might be a software issue so I trashed iDVD and reinstalled it, but still the audio is silent at the same point in my movie. I've seen other post and read suggestions regarding the loss of ALL audio but none like this. iDVD6 is the only burn program I have currently because of limited funds. Please, if you have any ideas that I can try, throw them my way. I'm over the edge...
oh yeah...and the movie plays perfectly, audio and video, in FCE, QT, and even in iDVD when I make the menu for the DVD before I burn it.

    Hi
    a. From FCE/P I do
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • NO QuickTime conversion (Important)
    • Not Selfcontained (Saves time and space - Not important)
    b. There has to be a minimum of 25Gb free space on the internal/boot hard disk (IMPORTANT)
Else - my trouble shooting list
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    iDVD pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named. com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !
    iDVD updated ?
    Apple Codec updated ?

  • FCP to Quicktime - looks great in QT but has drag on a TV

OK, have FCP 6 and everything going great. I had some files that were in AVI. I converted them using MPEG Streamclip to .mov format...so I thought. The first few did convert but then I wasn't watching and Streamclip set back to default and I accidentally converted some to "Apple JPEG A". I found this out later when I put it to DVD and there was drag (football highlight video) behind all the players running. Looked great on FCP and in Quicktime. BUT, when I dump to DVD and play on my TV the drag is there. The obvious solution is to take the AVI's that I messed up on and re convert them to mov. However, I broke the cardinal rule and dumped them. All clips look great, except the ones that went to JPEG A. I tried to reconvert them to mov but no effect. Any ideas....PLEASE? Why does it look good in QT but not on a TV?
    Bryan

Does the outputted QT file have it's High Quality bit set?
    if not:
    Open it in QT player
    command+j for the Movie Properties
select the video track and then click on the Visual Settings button
click High Quality button and save.
