FCP5 and 24p

Hello,
I just got on board this project. I'm basically trying to make the process of editing it smoother than what it has been up tuntil now.
They shot in 24p. I don't know if it was advanced or standard. They are about to start editing with Final Cut Pro 5.
The output will be a 24p DV and maybe even film (as somebody is offering it for free -- of course no tests were run beforehand, they just forged ahead)
Here are my questions:
(A) - How do I find out what 24p they shot in? I read somewhere on this forum that one would need to take a look at the frame rate. But what's the difference between the frame rate of 24p advanced and 24p standard?
(B) - Which setting should the editor use to capture the 24p Standard footage, considering that we are going for a 24p DVD output?
(C) - Would the editor be right to use the "DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal" setting to capture the 24p Advanced footage?
(D) - What do people mean by "24p DVD" output? Is it simply to burn a 24 final cut on a DVD? Or does it require more work than that? (We have the DVD authoring software that comes with the Final Cut Studio package)
Thank you much for the help.
Alex

What a goldmine this thread was to me this week! I had almost an identical situation arise. 24p 16:9 that the client wanted burned to DVD.
The media was on MiniDV 1hr26min. of footage. He also wanted to keep it at 23.98 for the DVD vs. 29.97
After careful reading of this thread and a couple of others to get some real-world working knowledge of 24p and the workflow, off to burn I went!
A couple of important things came to mind. Fisrt it was really a lifesaver to visit http://www.jkor.com/peter/24editing.html before starting.
By reading that site I found out that my MiniDV deck JVC BR-600UA would not allow you to use the Easy Setup for Advanced Pulldown. That was a touchy subject for me, because I had already commited to the job. A quick call to the client to ask about camera settings during the shoot eased my mind. He had not used Advanced Pulldown.
Now it was just a matter of capturing and running Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown. Well almost...
Since the project was ws on 2 tapes and had minimal editing, I simply made 2 captures. The issue was that Cap1, was 60min long and the file was to large for Cinema Tools to handle.
The shorter Cap2 was no problem. After breaking the first Cap into two smaller clips, it went like butter. Lesson learned:)
Next came Compressor for the MPEG files and finally DVDSP, in which I got another surprise. This project was going to require a Dual Layer disc.
Somehow I missed the part in the manual where it talks about establishing a break-point marker in your timeline. Lesson learned
Bottom line... Project is complete 2 days ahead of schedule and works perfectly.
Thank you to all who contribute here. The 1 hour of research saved me at least 3 days of headaches, and certainly would have created quite a different post here in this forum from me on this subject.
LOL!

  • Working with 30p and 24p in premiere

I would like some advice on mixing 30fps footage with 24fps footage. Or, shooting all in 30p, but I would want the final video in 24p without any quality loss.
I have two shoot days for a short video I am making. The first day I shot an entire interview and tons of broll in 30fps. I have another day of shooting and was wondering what my best option would be: Either to keep shooting the rest in 30p and then putting all 30p footage on a 24p timeline? Or, finish my next shoot day with 24p (having both 30p and 24p footage) and then putting the mix footage on a 24 timeline? Or, is there too much quality now that will be lost, if I take 30p to 24p?
Suggestions? My ultimate goal is to have a cinematic look and feel.
This will be my first project in premiere.
    Thanks!

    Then shoot in 24 fps.

  • Highest Quality DVD Encoding for 29.97 and 24p DVX Footage

I want to make sure that in both FCP and in Compressor that I am setup to have the best possible quality SD DVD.
I have edited footage that is both in 29.97 and 24p from a DVX100a in Final Cut Pro 6.04. My sequence settings are:
    720x480 -NTSC DV 3:2
    Pixel Aspect: NTSC
    Field Dominance: Lower (Even)
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Quality: 100
Video processing and render settings are on the highest setting.
I am done editing and want to encode to SD DVD using Compressor. My settings are:
Video Format TAB - Untouched (NTSC, 29.97, 4x3, Field - Bottom First)
    Frame Controls TAB -
    Resize - Best
    Output - Progressive
    Deinterlace - Best
    Adaptive Details - Not Checked
    Anti Alias - 0
    Details Level - 0
    Rate Conversion - Fast
    Set Duration 100%
Are these settings correct? When I brought the mpeg2 into DVD Studio Pro and put it into a track, it said that it was 720x480i. Shouldn't it be 720x480p? I am a bit confused. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Look, you really need to wrap your head around 24p, 30p, 24pA and 30i.
Interlace is not an ugly issue. It is a benefit. Interlacing normal on broadcast television. Your TV scans down and back up for each frame... alternating lines. When you shoot 24p on the DVX it puts it to tape where for every 3 frames of progressive it combines FOUR frames to give you TWO additional combined (interlaced) frames. So.. there are 6 sets of 5 frames per 1 second giving you 30 frames per second. If you take those 3 progressive frames by themselves 3x6 is 24 frames per second.
You OBVIOUSLY want to final out to 29.97 or 30 fps so you'll need those extra 2x6 frames to get you to 30!! If you wanted to final out to 29.97 AND you wanted progressive frames for EVERY frame you should have shot 30p mode.
Now... when are they ugly? When you are standing still on a frame. When are they unnecessary? When you plan to show them on a computer or progressive monitor. Remember, even when shooting progressive and playing it on a TV you will STILL have the TV doing interlaced scans... the only difference is the down scan is taken from the same point in time as the up scan.
Plus... you don't capture TO a sequence... you capture the video and edit it IN a sequence. You can still capture the footage in 24p at 29.97 and remove those 2x6 extra frames and edit in a 23.98 sequence.
Do some reading. It will only help.

  • Final Cut Pro, HF S100 and 24p

I recorded movies in 60i, 30p and 24p (by the setting on the camera). I then do a LOG AND TRANSFER and movies are brought in. When i look at the settings (in FCP) they are all 29.97 framerate. Why is this? How do i get the 24p footage in, and have FCP and all other programs recognize it as true 24p?

Going to DVD? Then you are fine. 29.97 is perfectly acceptable for DVD.
So the 27.97p is really 60i, and FCP does not care what it was shot in?
It does. It was shot 1080i60, with a film-like cadence. It wasn't shot 23.98. FCP imported it exactly how it was shot. Read that snippet I posted again...it says this plain as day.
I created a 1920x1080 24p Apple Pro, dropped the footage and said NO to settings change.
Really? Well, do you see a render bar above the footage in the timeline? If so...then the clip settings and sequence settings don't match.
Im assuming that a reverse-telecine took place?
Wrong assumption. It didn't unless you told it to. HDV and other GOP formats cannot have telecine removed. You need to convert to ProRes before you can remove telecine.
Is this the proper way to do it, or do I need to use Cinema Tools?
FCP does this...as does Cinema Tools.

  • 24p, FCP5, and my JVC SR-VS30U deck

I have been shooting in advanced 24p with my AG-DVX100A. Recently, I did a full studio upgrade, getting FCP Studio with FCP5, the new quad-core mac, and a JVC SR-VS30U mini-DV deck. More often than not, when I go to Log and Capture, FCP does not show that the deck is connected at all. When it does, it refuses to capture in advanced 24p, stating that there was a "cadence" error in the recording. However, when I capture directly from my camera, I do not have any issues. I got the deck to reduce the hours on my camera, and would prefer to work this way. Has anyone else experienced this issue or have any suggestions? Thank you in advance for your time and your help

    glynn,
i have an older jvc br-dv600ua and it works great. i don't think it's on apples' list of supported devices either. you should probably experiment with the firewire control protocols to see which works best. also, my vtr does not read the pulldown flags imbedded in the data stream so i cannot capture using the 24p advanced preset. a call to jvc tech support several years ago afirmed this and there's no mod on the board level that i could do to allow the machine to read the pulldown flags.
i would either chuck your unit out the window and drive over it with a steamroller, sell it on ebay, return it and then bypass the dsr 11 (i know this machine has many, many supporters on this site but i don't like it) and get a real vtr. good machines are expensive but so is working in the glamourous world of video and tv production.

  • FCP5 and Sound drops/pops

    Hello,
We captured footage from mini-DV tapes using FCP5. The footage on those tapes was recorded in 24p normal during production.
We captured the said footage with the NTSC Easy Set-Up in FCP5, before doing a pulldown with Cinema Tools.
The footage we got was at 23.98fps.
    Good.
... until we started to notice sound drops and pops in some of the captured footage -- drops and pops which do not exist on tape.
Why are we getting the bad sound quality?
    Did we miss something?
    Thank you.

    - The media is stored in a special folder called "23.98fps files" on our drive, a 400G Glyph.
That folder is the folder from which we imported the files we're editing in FCP5.
    - The project file itself is located in its own folder, the one that contains the scratch disk.

  • Macbook Pro and 24p output

    Hi,
I've got a 2008 macbook pro with a geforce 8600M GT connected to my Panasonic 37lzd85f via HDMI to DVI cable. The screen supports 24p so the only thing i need to chance is the 24p output on the macbook.
is there any possibility to set the output to 24p?
    thanks in advance

    Hi mawxi,
I have the same problem and i resurged the topic nearly two weeks now. For me it's important to play video native 24p and audio with SPDIF 5.1
    My way:
1.) OSX: There is only the way to buy the software "switchresX". I found no other way to change the frequency to 24Hz. If tested it and it worked.
--> If anyone know more please share the information with us!
2.) Vista: I used bootcamp to install Vista. After installing all vista updates, i downloaded the nvidia driver "nvidia 8900M GT" from the nvidia homepage. It worked and there i can choose the 24Hz.
Now i searched the audio driver and the Wifi driver. (Normally those drivers should be included at the OSX disc but not at my one) I found them here:
    http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx
Yes! You have to use the internet Explorer, but here you find all you need.
search: "Broadcom 802" for Wifi and "Realtek" for audio, sort the list by Date.
Well, now i can use my 2000€ MacBook Pro to watch 24p movies with 5.1 sound on my fullhd beamer and 7.1 yamaha receiver.

  • Can you have FCP5 and FCP 6 installed

Hello.  I am having problem with FCP 5.04 ( external Display ) which is another query in this forum, but someone suggested that FCP 6 will solve it.  If I can obtain a copy of FCP 6 and install it,  will over write any of the installed FCP 5 in case I want to remove FCP 6 later and leave FCP5 as it is.  Thanks in advance   John

The best solution would be to partition the system drive and intall a clean version of your os and FCP6 on the new partition.
    Good luck.

  • FCP5 and Kona 3 Card

I am working on a FCP5 system with a Kona 3 card installed. The company has used this card for some time with great success for SD projects. They are making the tranfer to HD projects. They are shooting HDCAM. I have been able to get the video signal from the deck to FCP - but have not been able to get audio to FCP.
I hooked up the deck SDI. This is how the video signal is coming in. But no audio. They have the speaker routed through a mixer connected to the card. One I plugged in the the Kona AES cables I was able to get audio to the speakers but no audio signal to FCP!
Any ideas?!! Has anyone had this problem or heard of any type of solutions? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

Kona recommends using a Fibre Channel or SCSI external RAID for uncompressed HD, but the price for both of those is high. The eSata works and is much more cost effective. The best reason to go Fibre would be if you were using multiple editing stations at one location and wanted each to share the same storage thru a Fibre network.
As far as drive performance, in the eSata world, 8 striped 250 or 500s at 7200 RPM is the lowest recommended. 6 striped may work for 8 bit, but I have never tried.
    I found this list:
Storage and data rates for uncompressed video are listed below.
    525 NTSC uncompressed;
    8 bit @ 720 x 486 @ 29.97fps = 20 MB per/sec, or 70 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 720 x 486 @ 29.97fps = 27 MB per/sec, or 94 GB per/hr.
    625 PAL uncompressed;
    8 bit @ 720 x 576 @ 25fps = 20 MB per/sec, or 70 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 720 x 576 @ 25fps = 26 MB per/sec, or 93 GB per/hr.
    720p HDTV uncompressed;
    8 bit @ 1280 x 720 @ 59.94field = 105 MB per/sec, or 370 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 1280 x 720 @ 59.94field = 140 MB per/sec, or 494 GB per/hr.
    1080i and 1080p HDTV uncompressed;
    8 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 24fps = 95 MB per/sec, or 334 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 24fps = 127 MB per/sec, or 445 GB per/hr.
    8 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 25fps = 99 MB per/sec, or 348 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 25fps = 132 MB per/sec, or 463 GB per/hr.
    8 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97fps = 119 MB per/sec, or 417 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97fps = 158 MB per/sec, or 556 GB per/hr.
    1080i and 1080p HDTV RGB (4:4:4) uncompressed;
    10 bit @ 1280 x 720p @ 60fps = 211 per/sec, or 742 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 24PsF = 190 per/sec, or 667 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 50i = 198 per/sec, or 695 GB per/hr.

  • Troubles with 60i and 24p movie

I am a newbie for sure, so please forgive my lame description of my problem.
I have Premiere Pro CC and have imported 24p movies from my 5D Mk III onto the timeline, all good.  I am trying to do cut aways of footage that was shot on a Vixia G10 camcorder at 60i (an oversight). When I drag onto the timeline, it plays a choppy postage stamp sized version on the preview stage.  Thus, on the cutaways the original footage is there with a tiny little cutaway in the middle.
Is there a way to pull the video into CC and have it deal with the difference in frame rates?  I have searched but didn't find anything that seemed to fit..
    thanks in advance...

  • Premiere CS3 and 24p exporting

    Hello,
I've been working on this problem for a long time.
I have some clips shot with a Canon XL2 in 24p mode with 2:3:3:2 pulldown. I import in Premiere CS3 in a 24p project, go in "Interpreter footage" and set "Remove 24p pulldown", and in the timeline the clips are good, 24p without interlaced frames.
Then I go exporting: I want export in 24p (23,97) DV format.
    1) If I choose "Microsoft DV AVI" with "DV (24p Advanced)", the clips I get are in 29,97 with still the flagged frame that should have been removed. So I have the same output format that I get setting DV NTSC with his 29,97 framerate.
    2) If I choose "Microsoft AVI" and then I go with an alternative DV codec, such as the Panasonic's one (but I've tried many and I've got the same results, so I don't think it's their fault), I get a 23,97 clip, but the frame that has been removed is not the flagged and interlaced one, is one of the progressive. Watching the clip frame to frame I see that I have 24 fps: 3 progressive, 1 interlaced, 3 progressive, 1 interlaced, and so on.
Let me know. Sorry for my bad english but I'm italian.
    Thank you

My own testing shows that Premiere doesn't create 24p friendly DV files. I've had much better success creating 24p MPEG2-DVD files.

  • IMovie 11 and 24p

    Does iMovie11 support 24p natively???
I have a Canon HF-S21 ACVHD that shoots 24p natively without the wrapper conversion or pulldown conversion.
Does the new iMovie11 ingest this to the timeline?
In the new camera compatibility list there is no comment or warning that prevents this.
    Thanks, Your input is appreciated.
    Luidoly

Well, to answer my own question, Yes it does support 24p native (23.95) to be exact.
Shot a short clip, with 24 frame rate from the Canon HF-S21, selected the project with 24 cinema timeline and it loaded the clips perfectly, I even mixed some shots with different frame rates and it played flawlessly. I presume that this can happen only when the camera records natively, I don't know if it will clips that require the 3:2 pulldown.
    Thanks,

  • 16:9 question and 24p question

I shot some footage on a Canon xl2 in 16:9 and in 24p.
Regarding the 16:9. I was wondering how to show 16:9 footage on a 4:3 TV with out it getting streched. Can this be fixed in post?
Also regarding the 24p. the Canon XL2 records in 24p then it uses 2:3 pulldown to record to tape (in 60i)
What is the best way to caputre this in Final Cut Pro HD?

DVDSP implementation of 16:9 is clunky in that you have to set the 16:9 settings all over the place (menus, tracks, project, etc.) So be careful. The manual has a lot of information on this subject, to be sure. I'd set everything in DVDSP to letterbox, by the way, not panscan (which is just a crop unless you somehow have encoded pan-scan vector info into your build) unless you've specifcally protected for 4:3 in your widescreen shoot.
Make sure you set your DVDSP simulator to 16:9 so that you can double check everything with some confidence before you burn.
Don't worry about setting up the DVD player - almost all commercial movie DVDs are anamorphic so most people's DVD players are set up correctly - you just choose the type of TV in the DVD player setup menu and the letterbox is automatically applied if it's set up for a 4:3 TV (do you still use those 4:3 sets over there in the US?)

  • ***Final Cut Pro and 24p/60p Footage

    Hi.
I'm working on a short project where most of the footage is 720/24p. We have some B-roll that's 720/60p.  We definitely want to use this footage.  I'm familiar with conforming it to 24p in Cinema Tools and having nice slow motion, but I don't want that.  I just want to mix the footage in at regular speed as best as possible. Right now, I just dropped it into the timeline as is, rendered, and I guess it looks okay. I'm assuming FCP is just taking out frames.
Is this okay, or is there a better method?
    Thank you!

Open up Compressor drop in the material and create a preset to that uses Frame Controls to conform the 60p to 24p. You'll want the output to be in your editing codec (ProRes?). You do not need to resized the image.
In a simplistic way, what this will do is throw out 4 of 5 frames (take it down to 12p) then build the intermediate frame between each remaining frame to get back to 24p. Given the amount of info being tossed into the rubish bin, you'll want the conversion to happen thoughtfully.
Set your frame controls to Better (motion compensated). If Better doesn't yield the results you want, you may want to go to BEST. You should understand that going to BEST will increase rendering times dramatically.
Otherwise, Motion and AfterEffects can do retiming. I find AE does it as well or better than Motion and does it faster.
    Good luck.
