FCP5 Compression question...DVD isn't clear on my 51 inch TV

One thing I do not like about version 5 is using compressor. It takes a lot more time to compress then it did in v4.5. A 1 1/2 hour movie takes 24 hours compared to 12 hours before. And why does it need to be compressed? If a dvd holds 120min...and the movie is less then that, why compress and lose the information?
Anyways I'm using compresser and setting it to mpeg2 compression with a setting of 5 and 7 and using 2 bypass. Its not that clear compared to a store bought movie dvd. Plays very clear on a tube tv but not that clear on my sony HD 51 tv. I need it to be clear because I'm a wedding videographer and show my DVD's on this TV for presentation. Is there something else I can do? Is there hardware that I can buy that will make it very clear on a larger screen tv?
Im using DVD sp3 to do my authering.
Thanks,
Tony

The DVD-Video specification requires a particular formatting scheme so that [hopefully] ALL players will be able to read and playback the encoded data. Its not just a matter of program length. The current SD DVD-Video spec calls for a specially encoded MPEG-2 files which are then compiled in VOB file format. Unfortunately, MPEG-2 IS a heavily compressed format - something we all have to live with.

You shouldn't really expect it to be. Hollywood and other commercially released productions are shot with very high end gear with excellent lighting and then edited on high end systems and finally encoded with high end hardware and pressed to disc instead of being 'burned'. Keep your expectations realistic.

Is your 51" HD TV trying to uprez the image? If so, it WILL probably look like crap - all soft and fuzzy with fun little artifacts dansing around the edges of things. Either use an standard TV or an HD model that will allow an SD signal to be displayed without uprezzing ... or sit further back from the 51" HD set so you don't see all the artifacts.
As for the encoding quality - most users have found using a CBR setting in Compressor 2 to provide a better quality output.

Whenever I put my earphones into my iPod Touch 2g the music isn't clear and I have to push and hold them in order to hear the song normally. It isn't the earphones because I tried another pair, that worked fine, and there was still no difference. I also use the same pair of earphones in my laptop and it sounds great. Is there a way to fix this problem without having to buy a brand new iPod touch? Do I need to clean it or something? And if so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks!

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
If still problem that indicates you have a bad headphone jack.

  • Question on GR/IR clearing - T/code F.19 (Urgent)

    Dear Guru,
I have some questions on GR/IR clearing
GR and IR have been done for a PO. I run F.19 for GR/IR clearing. Next, I run a customised report to check whether the GR/IR for this PO has been cleared. However, the detail is still resides in table BSIS.
My question is when I run F.19,
    1) Will the detail for PO be cleared from table BSIS if the good receipt and invoice verification is done?
    2) Do I need to perform any transactions before or after I executed F.19
    3) Any information on this will be helpful.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
    1. If GR(MIGO) and IR (MIRO) has been done for the purchase order what is the requirment for f.19 . As F.19 is to post adjustment entries at the period end for Goods recived for invoice not reiceved and vice nersa...
    2.  For GR/IR clearing acount maintainence you can try MR11. check the functionality. after that what ever left for passing an adjustment entries for financial statement run F.19
    Hope i am clear

  • My text on a dv progressive output isn't clear

Ok I got in an editor for two days because I was insecure about outputting myself and didn't know how to work with compressor. I have a dv progressive 4:3 letterboxed feature 24p. It's edited down from an earlier version where the output didn't have this problem. I believe post person at that time output an uncompressed QT file then put it thorugh a 2 pass dvd mpeg 2 and the text didn't look I don't know interlaced? Aliased?
So the person I hired in for two days insists you don't want to do two outputs because I'd lose quality...however, he output the entire project (he did this twice and each time it took about an hour and a half) without just testing a clip that had the type on it like the credits or opening and each time the text came out terrible and he said this is probably as good as it gets and I said no this is not as good as it gets as I already had outputs of the exact same files I've pressed as earlier dvds in its longer format that didn't have this problem...we were working on an earlier version of fcp on a much less powerful computer.
this footage as well is pristine shot on the dvx100 at 24 frames progressive and in my regular fcp timeline there's no fuzziness on the type.
So, anyway, once this guy left for the day, I took a small clip that has some of the type face on it in fcp, I made a short sequence and I imported into compressor and I've been testing now that I figured out how to import into compressor. I'm doing a batch output now of this short sequence inclusive of an mpeg2 2 pass with best quality and choosing progressive source in case for some reason the compressor is seeing interlaced. I'm doing a dv ntsc output an sd 8 bit uncompressed and an apple pro res for progressive for fun at 10 bit instead of 8 bit.
I read to get type to look really good to put it through an animation codec first then run the output back through the mpeg2 compressor. I haven't tried this yet.
The average bit rate is 6.2 and maximum is 7.7 to get it to fit on a dvd-5 with everything else on there...it's coming out about the same size as the original film which was 104 minutes (this version is 90 minutes)...so in other words, there should be more information on this new version and I believe these bit rates are not the reason we had output a much higher bit rate and had the same problem.
I've ruled out settings on my monitors as I can see in compressor preview everything looks great, but on output when I look at my computer monitor, I can see the fuzziness of the type though the picture itself looks very nice so I know this is an issue with my compressor output or the way it's reading the input from the final cut pro sequence.
I even reset a couple of things in output like I brought up the contrast a little and a hilight color and the output colors look really matchy to the source. The type fuzziness is the only problem so I'm frustrated and have to get a dvd out this week and don't want it to look amateur with the lettering and credits looking fuzzy.
This is frustrating any suggestions? right now i'm trying also a 2 pass mpeg 2 turning on frame controls and putting the anti-alias up to 70 percent and outputting where I'm choosing progressive output and "source frames play at 23.98" in duration.
    HELP PLEASE?

You are doing great working through this on your own. You may even have solved the problem at this point.
Output, and more specifically, compression, is a bit of a dark art, part rules and science, and part just knowing from experience what will work well on a particular video with a particular compression tool.
Here are some thoughts and background that may help.
    1. The best first step would have been to call the post person who did the first output. He/she got it right the first time. I assume it wasn't practical to call this person.
    2. Using FCP and Compressor, my work flow is two steps, the same as your original post person, ie I output a self-contained movie with the same codec and frame rate as my edit sequence. I send this to Compressor.
Though the person you recently hired is correct in theory, multiple outputs does degrade quality, using FCP and Compressor it is faster and the quality is the virtually the same using the two step method as long as your self-contained movie uses the "current" settings of the sequence.
The other advantage of this method is in trouble shooting your problem. Look at the text after you export the self-contained movie. If it looks bad at this stage you know your issue is not being caused by Compressor. If it looks good at this stage, move on to Compressor.
    3. As mentioned above, I prefer to use a self-contained movie. It does take up more space on a drive, which is the only down-side. Having the self-contained output has saved me, and saved clients dozens of times over the last five years. It is a terrific back-up/archive of your finished work that you can use for outputting into the future.
    4. It sounds like you've got things sorted, and you are happy with the output, so your settings in the frame controls must be OK! However, during trouble shooting, I suggest turning off the frame controls. This limits the problem so you will have better luck tracking down the problem. Frame controls are great, but I suggest experimenting with them on short clips to find out what will best enhance your footage.
    5. AIFF is for all intents and purposes uncompressed audio. For stereo material, Dolby 2.0 is a good choice when you are compressing for DVD in Compressor. The files sizes of Dolby 2.0 are much smaller than AIFF, and the quality is fine.
    6. Your compression settings sound a bit high in Compressor. No doubt, the resulting files will look very good, however I've found in testing that older DVD players sometimes choke on DVDs with settings in the same range you are using. If I'm not sure where a DVD might get used I keep my average down near 5.0.
This might just be confusing to you, and if that is so, just TEST your DVD on the players it must play well in. If there is a high stakes playback (like for a client meeting or a screening) make a back-up DVD, and perhaps another back up with lower compression settings.
    7. You are doing a great job of sticking with this problem. It sounds like the person you hired made the mistake in FCP on the sequence settings, and you identified these mistakes and corrected them.
I just wrote what is above as more background for the next time things go awry. And they will

  • When I put my earphone in the sound isn't clear

When I put my earphones in the sound isn't clear.
There's a new head jack in as well.

    Hi Mr.Acevedo329!
I have an article here for you that can help you troubleshoot the issues you are experiencing. That article can be found right here:
iPod troubleshooting basics and service FAQ
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1382
Specifically, you will want to take note of this section:
    The headphones don't work
If your iPod's headphones don't work or have static or garbled audio, try connecting them to any other 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack, like the one on your computer. If the issue with the headphones persists, replace them. For an iPod under warranty, you can order a replacement online. Otherwise, check out the cool headphones at the Apple Online Store. If the issue appears to be with the iPod, try resetting it. If that doesn't work, then restore iPod with the latest iPod software using iTunes 7 or later.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!

I am very frustrated as I have forgotten my security questions and need to clear them out.  I have all of my other information on the account.

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then go to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you should see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset (we are fellow users here on these forums).

  • PAL to NTSC DVD compression questions

    Ok,
I have recently finished a dvd in PAL format with about 4.5GB total video once compressed. Now I need to get this into an NTSC version. Is it possible to use Compressor 2 to convert the DVD compressed clips/audio [the ones ready for PAL DVD] into NTSC format ready to build my project in DVDSP? Or do I need my original quicktime clips in PAL format and change them to NTSC in Compressor 2 then make them into NTSC DVD ready clips? Also what is the best setting for NTSC DVD in compressor that will be ok for the size of my final version [4.5GB]. Sorry about these questions but I made the PAl version with compressor 1 and there was far less settings to worry about.
    powerbook 12   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I'm pretty sure you need to go back to your Final Cut source material and re-export via Compressor by selecting 'advanced standards conversion' to get your NTSC files. Then you can import these into DVDSP as NTSC assets.

  • DVD compression question? Why go 720 x 576?

Ok so normally I would send my 1920 x1080p clips to compressor and ad the DVD best quality preset.
But this only gives me 720x 576 pixels.
I am obviously losing a lot of pixels.
I see there is HD dvd in compressor which seems to have native pixels.
So why would I use that preset in compressor? Is it for "HD dvd" players? How do I know if I have a HD dvd player?
    Can anyone help?

Currently, there are only two viable methods for optical disc delivery: DVD and Blu-ray:
DVD is standard definition only. However, some DVD players will upscale SD material to HD on output - this is NOT true HD; it's simply SD material being stretched.
Blu-ray can be HD or SD, but you'll need the appropriate Blu-ray burner and authoring software for creation ... and a Blu-ray player for playback.
The format known as HD DVD is dead and is no longer supported by any manufacturer. However, if you have one of the (now obsolete) Toshiba HD DVD players that were made, you could make and play an HD DVD. HD DVD discs will also play on Macs made within the last several years. They will NOT play in DVD players or Blu-ray players.

  • Questions on Mackeeper and clearing out junk! Help!

I downloaded Mackeeper and it told me junk was slowing down my Mac but after it asked for $88 i quickly uninstalled it. Im worried it left a virus that slowed down my Macbook Pro. Even tho everyone says Macs don't need antivirus ware, is there something i can run to make sure there isn't anything harmful leftover? Also what is safe to use to clear out junk to improve how my Mac runs?

Don't install junk (like MacKeeper) to begin with. A program to accomplish what you describe and is safe to use does not exist.
If you have reason to believe your Mac is not performing as it should, please explain. Specific guidance can be provided but it would help if you would correlate that unexpected performance with certain activity, such as the time it takes to start up, to launch programs, to shut down, to load webpages, etc. Provide as much detail as you can.
Attaching an EtreCheck report will preclude asking additional questions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Do not download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.

When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

  • Dvd not as clear as avi files

Not really sure what I'm doing wrong. I've been putting a complication of HS football highlight films together for players. I'm ripping the dvd game films and making them into avi files. I then work on them in Premiere Pro CS3, when done I export my creation as an avi file and author the dvd in Nero latest version.  My question is, the final dvd looks a little muddy or pixilated, but the avi files when played on the computer look clean & crisp. If someone could explain what I'm doing wrong and how to rectify the problem I would really appreciate it.  Thanks for any input & help.  Dan

    Hi
    Just had a thought...you said..
I'm ripping the dvd game films and making them into avi files
So you may be close to the people at the school, know them etc....   Maybe there is a way to get the source material before it is compressed a lot...from the person(s) shooting the games ??
If you talk to them about your difficulty and ask , maybe you can get better source material to edit the stuff.

  • Compression and non-compression questions

    Hi Folks,
I want to use my PC as a music juke box. I plan on having an audio output lead plugged into my living room stereo from my PC and using iTunes to do the playing and managing of the downloaded music files. I want to import my music CDs into the PC using a lossless or rather using no form of compression because I want the music to be at it's audio best.
Then, when I want to use my iPod I want to make a copy of the original PC stored copy into an iPod appropriate file such as Apples MPeg4 format. This conversion because of the limited storage space on an iPod. You can get a whole lot more MPeg4 files on a iPod than you can Wav format files. I don't have the exact ratio but it's something like 8 to 1 in terms of the numbers of files you can upload onto an iPod.
So there you have it. Quality, unadulterated, clear, dynamic music playing out of my living room stereo from the PC and a compress copy of the music on my iPod where the audio quality isn't crucial.
    Got any ideas?
    Thanks
    Bart

    You have two options:
    1) Use completely separate libraries for your lossless files and lossy files (probably more pain that it's worth).
    2) Use separate playlists
With 1), you have to hold shift when starting iTunes to select or create an iTunes Library. You'll also have to either import seperately, or delete the undesired files out of the library (without deleting the file from the hard disk), then add them into the other library. Possible but moderately difficult. To sync your iPod you connect your iPod when the "lossy" library is selected.
With 2), you can just make two smart playlists -- one where the criteria is "Kind" is Apple Lossless, and another with "Kind" = "AAC audio file". To sync your iPod, you change the preference to only sync selected playlists, and select the playlist that has the lossy music.
P.S. Lossless compression sounds identical to the source because "lossless" compression means exactly that -- no information is lost. Examples are the Apple Lossless Encoder and FLAC (FLAC is not supported by iTunes/iPod).

  • DVD not as clear as was expected

When I play DVDs on my MacBook Pro, it seems like it should be alot clearer. Especially with such a nice display. I can see artifacts here and there, and the picture just doesn't look as crisp as I had expected. Games are fine...they look great. Is there anything I can do about this or is that the way that DVDs play. Would this be a video card issue? Thanks.
    firewired

Thanks. I downloaded an HD quicktime clip and it was crystal clear. Must be the DVD compression. I'm glad that it's not my display or my video card. I was kind of hoping for clear DVD playback though. Oh well...HD looks great though. And if you don't look too terribly close, the regular DVDs look pretty nice too. Thanks again.

  • Weird JPG compression question

    Hi,
I am using I am using Windows 7 x64. My camera (Nikon D700) automatically saves copyright data with my name and phone number. I am editing thoose JPEG files from Photoshop CS5 and save them on a HDD with compration ratio 12. For example:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26109102/TEST1.jpg
As you can see file size is about 4.67 MB
However, when I right click to file in windows 7 and choose properties and than remove my phone number, file size dramatically reduce at 1.45 MB. Here is a file:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26109102/TEST1%20-%20just%20remove%20phone%20number.jpg
So what is the reason of that? Whan I compare both files I can not see the difference in compression. Could you also check it please. Is it a kind of bug?
    Thanks in advance.
    Koray

The original compression ratio is 66MB/4.5MB = 15 (mental arithmetic).
The final compression ratio is about 66MB/1,45MB = 45.
Such a high compression should be clearly visible, mainly at edges.
But the two images are almost identical. Use image calculation > subtract
and analyze the resulting alpha channel.
    a) by histogram
    b) by an extremely steep curve.
There are differences, but these are very small.
In my opinion the question is not yet answered. Or is the answer "Microsoft
has improved the standard JPEG compression by factor three"?
I'm using older software, therefore I can't reproduce the OP's tests.
    Best regards --Gernot Hoffmann
    Edit:
Compression by factor 45 for arbitrary images would deliver really bad results.
The situation here is slightly less critical, because large parts of the image are
    almost uniform.
But even if we assume an effective compression by factor 25 for the image parts
with details - the compression artifacts should be visible, in my opinion.
But the aren't. Here we need some clarification.
