SAP NetWeaver Portal comprises three major building blocks as mentioned above: Portal Platform, Knowledge Management and Collaboration.

This environment supports both UNIX and Microsoft Windows operating systems and the content can be localized to support more than 20 languages.

iViews – The business packages contain more than 2,500 iViews (technical name - Portlets).  iViews are small applications that display information in various formats, such as text, figures, graphs, re-ports, tables, and charts. iViews can do more than push static content to the user; they make it possi-ble to draw real-time data from applications to provide users with interactive access to a wide range of business functions.
Tools for content developers – The Portal Development Kit (PDK) supports both JAVA and .Net technologies, allowing customers to draw on the large development communities that have the re-quired skills.  SAP is also working on visual tools that will allow business users to develop content for their areas of expertise, without needing to code.
Tools for content administrators – These tools are part of the SAP EP platform. They are intuitive, easy to use, and no programming skills are required to use them. Most customers use a combination of SAP’s predefined content with content they develop to meet specific organizational needs. All of this content is managed by a portal administrator and pushed to the appropriate users.
Knowledge Management
The knowledge management capabilities of the NetWeaver Portal platform convert the entire spec-trum of unstructured content stored in third-party repositories and other content management systems into Organizational Knowledge by providing a shared set of user services for finding, organizing and accessing this content, and to improve decision making process.

Portal Collaboration can integrate seamlessly with third-party collaboration tools like WebEx i.e. Portal users can even collaborate with non-Portal users. They work with groupware solutions, such as Mi-crosoft Exchange or Lotus Domino, to automatically synchronize calendars.
