Fed up - BT termination charges.

Singed up with BT last April. had an absolute nightmare which I won't bother going into, other than to say after several months, god knows how many phone calls, promises of call backs not materialising and being asked repeatedly to unscrew my plug socket, I eventually tweeted BT and was able to reslove (more or less) my issues and have a functioning evening and weekend phoneline, basic internet and bt vision.
We have enjoyed pretty rubbish service from them since - our internet frequently goes down, vision box stops working etc, however I literally have not had the energy to bring it up with them, as my compliants last time cost me (taking time off work waiting for engineers who never materialised, unable to work from home due to lack of internet connection) and physically made me want to end it all.
Now we are moving. I am aware that I now face the fun challenge of cancelling my contract early (It should end on the 30th of April 2013).
I am fully willing to pay early termination charges to get out of this nightmare, however I have just plucked up the courage and called to find out what it's going to set me back.
Of course, I got through to BTs friendly local Indian call centres - spoke to a very lovely lady there who I felt a bit sorry for - as so many I have spoken to before her, clearly she just had a script, and probably couldn't understand me any more than I could understand her.
I have been told that to cancel now, I would need to pay £74.82 to get out of my broadband contract, £49 to get out of my phone line and a whopping £199 to get out of my BT Vision.
Now, i'm OK with the broadband and phoneline...but £199 for a tv service I pay £4 per month for?? I am confused. So, I asked her if i would be able to cancel my broadband and phoneline, but keep my BT Vision, thus levying the £199 charge. She said yes. I asked her to clarify and repeat this and she did.
Long story, I know (sorry, BT makes me rant) but is this the case? I thought you needed bt internet in order to get bt vision, so how can one exist without the other? If i did this, would it mean that I would be paying my normal vision costs per month till April without recevining a service? (I would be happy to do this if it avoids the £199 charge).
You might be thinking, why not just transfer your contract to your new property, bite the bullet and see it out? But BT have quoted me £120 to install a new phone line in our new flat. I am not having that.
Help! I just want to have a clear idea of my best options so i can make one swift phonecall armed with knowledge of what i can do, rather than being transferred and never really understanding anything at all.

I haven't check the new speed (do i have to phone them to do this?) but I am moving from literally the centre of a city (where you would have thought my speed would have been OK, right?!) to the outskirts... The predicted speed for my existing property was wildly innacurate, so not sure I would trust it anyway!
The only way I have checked charges to transfer BT services is online - i went through the process and it said total cost would be £120 to install a new phoneline...is this openreaches charge? I understand they have to charge it, my issue is that I really don't want a new contract with BT...if I transferred services would I have to pay the £120 plus increase my contract by another 12 months? Sorry if i'm confusing you I am most confused myself!!
When you say 'if the speed is not good enough for BT Vision at your new house, you should be able to cancel it without penalty' how is this the case? I wanted to cancel my services originally because the speed / bt vision was so bad but they wouldn't let me without incurring early termination charges?
Thank you so much for your help.

  • How to pay the Termination charge?

Excuse me.My sister just received the email indicated that she needed to pay the termination charge for her account. The email said she could pay it online by using www.o2.co.uk/myo2account, but she was not able to remember that account. Then I tried to reset password by sending a link to her mailbox that she received the reminding email mentioned before (I thought that should be the email address associated with that account), but the link was not valid. Furthermore, she went back to China one month ago and could not use her UK sim card anymore. So how can I pay that bill for her overdue account online? Or maybe I should create a lively chat and speak to the agents? Thanks a lot for anyone helping with my problem.

You need the account holder to be present which I assume is her?
The SIM card needs to be in an O2 UK phone or an unlocked handset.
Call customer services from a landline, they will need to reconnect the sim &'account for £15 then the termination fee as well

  • Re: Account termination charges

I have just rung up to explain that I need to terminate my contract early because I am moving in with someone who has an existing package. My contract was for 18 months and I have been told that I owe them £494 to cancel. This is one of the most outrageous things I have ever encountered.  I cannot believe this is allowed to happen.

    Hi BecksM13,
I realise your upset about the cancellation charges, but you entered into a contract when you ordered the service or services from BT.
You say that your contract was for 18 months, how long of that have you left.
What services are you going to cancel.
have you checked that the charges are correct. You can check here:

Some reading of the T&C that might help you are here:
    Changing the terms (notification)
Sometimes, we will need to change the charges or the terms and conditions of a service covered by this agreement. We will publish details of all changes online at www.bt.com.
We will also let you know about a price increase or a change to the terms and conditions that we believe is likely to cause you material disadvantage at least one month before it happens. We will do this in writing (which may include by letter, email, with your bill or in any other permitted method). We will let you know about other changes to prices and our terms and conditions with your next available bill or by an alternative method if this is simpler.
Sometimes we may need to make changes to our charges or the terms and conditions of a service which are outside of our control – for example to meet legal, regulatory or financial requirements. If we need to make changes for these reasons, we will let you know as soon as we can, but we will not have to meet the timescales detailed in paragraph 50, and you will not be able to end any affected service early without charge.
If we let you know about a change to the price or the terms and conditions of a service which is to your material disadvantage, you will not have to pay a charge if you decide to end that service early, unless the Tariff Guide says otherwise. However, once we have told you about such a change, using one of the methods detailed in paragraph 50, you must let us know within 10 days that you want to end that service by giving us the written notice set out in paragraph 21. Only the services that are directly affected by the changes we make can be ended without paying an early termination charge for that service and this agreement will continue to apply to any other services that are not affected by those changes.
You can see that there are occasions when you can end the contract, but that would only be for services that were affected.
Unless there where exceptional circumstances (and I do not believe moving in with someone covers that) then I fear that you will have to honour a legally binding contract.

  • Early contract termination charges

Can you please clarify the charges for early contract termination and where they are listed T+Cs.....  I recently added emobile to my existing broadband package only to recieve a 40 euro service charge in my bill..... When I questioned this I was informed that this is the "norm" , something that was not explained to me in the outset. Despite expressing my concern reference this charge eircom inform me that they will have to listen to the contract call ( ten days it wil take) and that I can not speak to the person for whom I spoke to originally. I was also infomed of a 150euro early cancellation charge although I have been a customer for 10 years. Initially it was explained that the reason for the charge was due to me changing to e-fibre, a produt that is not available in my area...... Finally, as I am not allowed to speak to the person who set up the contract , can I request a recording of the "set up" telephone call

I was informed by a team member yesterday that the reason for the long delay 10 to 15 days that eircom needs to deal with a complaint is not due to the high volume of complaints but its because they have to "trace" down my original call and this takes quite a while because they have to go through thousands of calls to check my original call..... When I asked to speak to the original guy who took my call ( I gave his name etc) I was informed that I could not speak with him because he works in sales and not aftersales which I am now a part of........ customer service eh!!!!!!!!!! I have also not signed up for diret debit but eircom continue to use direct debit information which i supplied to them ten years ago...... They wont let me chang it and say that I will be charged if it "bounches" back........ I paid in full manually this morning......... Still awaiting feedback from eircom ref original points raised and guess what? you cannot verbally speak to someone in the complaints department...... Just waiting for another competitor to provide broadband in this remote part of the country!!!!

  • Mega termination charges

In October 2012 took up a landline connection with BT along with one of the internet packages.  Foolishly I paid the line rental fee in full for the year £129 (if I recall correctly) leaving only the monthly internet charges to pay.   All well and good and very straight forward.
For some reason, they decided to link my new account with that of my late mother (she died in July 2012) - I can only assume this was because we shared the same postal address?   Naturally she had an outstanding bill and without my knowledge or permission, BT linked this to my new account.  The problems this raised remain unresolved and are not the topic of this entry.
My dilemma is this:  In January 2013 I had to cancell my internet and land line (due to moving abroad for work).  Consequently, I have been charged £187 termination fee and have not been reimbursed any of the £129 line rental fee paid.  I used this facility from 19.10.12 to 25.01.13 and whilst I anticipated I would incurre "some" early termination fees for the internet, I do not understand why BT are retaining all the line rental fee?  Unfortunately I was not able to move the connection to an alternate property (because of my working abroad).
Can anyone shed any light on this (ideally a member of BT).  Thank you.

i replied to your other post with a note of the cancellation charges so you can work out the charge to see if you agree.  I will repost to save you looking
    cancellation charges
if you elected to take the line saver option and pay 12 months upfront then it specifically says that there is no refund if you terminate early

Assuming the 3 line are smartphones the ETF would be $600 total. Basic phones would be $300.  An sorry you were lied to by at&t. That's price is not taking into account the cost of the phones.
    30 GB $130
    5 Line $15 each=$75
    total $205
However you also have to pay for the phones. Assuming the cheapest iPhone 6 and assuming you chose the 24 month payment plan that's another $135 a month. So $340 total. And you'll have to pay the sales tax on those phones upfront or on your first bill. What the sales tax on $3250 in your area?

  • Termination Charges? Correct?

Having been a long term BT customer, My contract was over in FEB and carried on, I have not used my services any more or less than I have done in the last few years, but have incurred a 'user allowance fee' for going over my broadband limit. BT Vision is rubbish (when it works!) and my phone is spammed with sales calls when I rarely give my landline number out!
I was told when signing up that i could disconnect if i wanted to - with no fee - as long as I was out of the minimum contract - and called BT today to cancel EVERYTHING only to be told I will incur a £30 + £10 disconnection fee!!! Great. The lady on the phone seemed more interested in upgrading me - and telling me the £40 fee is for engineers to come and disconnect my broadband line (£40 to tap a few codes in???????!!!!!!) she even told me how to monitor my usage - which is great - if i used more than i thought!!!! especially when this is the first charge!!! and ive never had one! I was not told of this disconnection fee when signing up,
BT are frustrating, annoying, horrible service-  like a rash!!! I suppose we are valued customers when we all incur fees like these, not as customers, which is probably why they don't let us happily leave!!! EVEN after serving minimum contract periods!!! I suppose Ofcom are inundated with this, but will try!

The disconnection fee is charged by BT Wholesale to all isps including BT retail your isp if you cease having broadband it covers the costs for an engineer removing all physical connections in the exchange from the broadband equipment there and updating all records it is only charged if you cancel broadband and do not obtain a MAC code to transfer to another internet service provider

  • Account termination charges

    Hi all
As I understand it, if you now cancel a contract early the penalty fees are much lower than they used to be (e.g. £2-3 a month for remaining months on the contract).
I am on an 18 month contract with around 7 months to go, however I am on the special offer where I got free line installation (normally around £125). If I do cancel early, does anyone know if extra fees will be imposed because of this?
    Many thanks

  • Charged £36 for switching to a different supplier ...

I signed a 12 month phone and broadband contract last September with BT, and received a renewal notice a month prior to my contract being up to say that I should let them know if I didn't want to renew, otherwise my renewal would go ahead on 19th September.
This year I decided to try a different supplier, so I signed up with this other company at the start of September and they contacted BT to say that I would be switching - this notice was given two weeks before 19th September.  My switchover date was 26th September, so I had one week further with BT beyond my 12 month contact, which BT didn't state would be a problem.  BT sent a letter confirming my account was being terminated, and stating that I would be charged £0.77 for switching.  It seemed a bit strange to me that I would be charged for switching suppliers, after all it doesn't cost BT anything apart from losing my custom and I wouldn't have thought it was in line with competition laws to try and put charges in place to discourage people from switching, but I thought nothing of it as it was such a small amount.
However, I've since received an email from them saying:
As you're stopping your service within the minimum term, you'll need to pay £36.170002 for stopping early. This fee is usually based on the number of months left on your contract.
But I'm NOT stopping within the minimum term, my minimum term was 12 months which I completed - and I never signed a new contract with them, and I told them with plenty of notice that I would be switching elsewhere, so there are NO months left on my contract.
I can understand that I will be charged for an extra week of service, which by my calculations for unlimited evening and weekend calls (£3 per month plus £10 line rental) and 40GB monthly broadband (£18 per month) totalling £31 per month, for 7 days that works out at about £7, which is what I would expect my final bill to come to.
Anyone else had this issue?  It's odd that I've received two different letters via different communication channels (one in the post and one via email) which say contradictory things about termination charges.
Advice and help would be much appreciated.  Previously I had a reasonably good image of BT and would have considered switching back to them next year, however that prospect becomes less likely the more they mess me around with this.
Thanks for any help you can give,
    Tdot

Thanks for responding, in answer to your questions:
    1. No I didn't get a MAC code from them, I didn't realise I even had one, they didn't mention this when they contacted me and said it would cost 77p to switch.  As they didn't mention it in their letter when they had the opportunity to tell me about any additional charges, I'd be very annoyed if they charged me when there was another way of doing it which would exempt me from those charges!
    2. My new supplier contacted BT straight away and BT sent a letter to me confirming that my contract would be ending. As a result, I didn't think I'd need to contact them to say it would be ending - surely they already knew if they contacted me to let me know when my service would be stopping?
I did email them and they have got back to me saying something about a fault with my bill, and that everything should be fine once my final bill is issued.  I will wait and see on the final bill what happens, then if it's not to my satisfaction I'll put in an official complaint.
From a look around this forum, the MAC code issue seems a common one.  Any ideas how it usually pans out?  It seems to be an ongoing issue on quite a few posts.  Is there anything I can do now the switch has occured?  I assume not, but it's worth a try.
    Many thanks,

  • Has anyone been charged a past due on very first bill

I am going crazy nuts with what I'm being charged I get my phone on the very last day of feb.7days later I'm told my bill is past due,how can that be Ive only been with their company one week, this is just the begining.ive been with verizon for 2 monthy I'm still being charged way tooooo much with the plan I have my bill as I was told and even on line it comes up with taxs and everything to 115.00 but mine is at 300.00,I did return the jack pack the same day I got it so that i would not be chargee the early termination charge I was charged for the service and every thing that goes with it.and I was told i would get credit for it still being on my phone and I was given credit My bill I payed in full was 29.88 I had a nice zero balance for three days the on the forth day up pops a bill for the amount of 288.00 with a past due of 181.00 this is insane I,m on ssi and have to buget everythingthis is way too much almost 700.00 in less than three monthsb  Help ive talked to several supervisors not a single one of them has the same answer this last one says its an earl termination charge ok so remove it I returned the device the sameday I got it the policy says to return within 10 days i didnt even wait one day and I didnt evn open it. I am not stupid but I am going insane with billing.

Just a big guess here. when you get service you are charged a device activation fee of I think $30, then there is prorate service for the time you get service till your bill date. Then there is service in advance and if you were within the 14 day return period you will still get a $35 restocking fee and if you sent it back via shipper service the charge for the device will be included.
Since I don't know what plan you purchased or devices other than the hotspot I cannot say what other charges there are on your invoice. I would either go to My Verizon http://www.verizonwireless.com and register fir the web portal and view your bill, and then call *611 from your cell or 800-922-0204 and speak to billing and have them break the invoice down.
There are also taxes and fees each month so that is something else to add to your invoice.
    Good Luck

  • I'm getting fed-up...

Hi, I need an advice. I've a "week 09" MBP (take a look down to the specs).
As soon as I've put my hands on it I expirienced the "right speaker distortion". I made up my mind, and I decided to set the balance in order to obtain an accetable (low) sound, pumping the left speaker and lowering the right one. No "whines" heard - or, at least, none too tiresome ones.
But, last week, it turned out my MBP suffers of "random shutdowns". Too bad... Now I'm wondering about the action to embark on. I could accept the battery replacement program, hoping it resolve my problem. Otherwise I can go to the nearest Apple's assistance here in Milan - so maybe the right speaker problem would be repaired too. Should I ask for a new MBP (= pretend a new one)?!
    Tnx for your opinions.
    MBP 15", 2.16Ghz, 2Gb RAM, 120Gb HD   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Build 8J2135, with all the web-updates installed

Regardless Giangiacomo, if your machine has been through repair more than once, or is taking forever (more than two weeks to repair), and you can't wait longer, it is better to have it replaced by a newer machine with an updated firmware than have to wait for parts which may arrive anywhere from a week to a month longer without knowing how long that may be.
I brought in my Powerbook that had fan issues to the Apple Store, and after two tries of ordering logicboards they gave up, and asked me if I'd like a newer machine. That took all of 10 days.
Now maybe I was lucky, but I'd rather see people get the working machine, even if it is newer, than settle for possibly refurbished boards, with less certainty that they would work and taking longer than they are able to handle waiting. But that's just my opinion as a user. There is no need to be fed up. Take charge when you call AppleCare and don't let them make you believe it is hopeless.

  • Charging for BT Privacy from 2015

I’ve just received a bill from BT which shows that I’ll be charged an additional £1.75 per month for BT Privacy from the start of the new year.
I’m not at all happy about this, not least because if BT did something about the large number of nuisance calls received, particularly from overseas, I wouldn’t need BT Privacy.
No doubt BT will claim that it cannot stop these calls being made because telecommunications is governed by international law and inter-governmental treaties, but if it was serious about putting its customers first, a business the size of BT could surely afford to pay some lobbyists to get any obstructing legislation changed.
I’m tempted to ask for BT Privacy to be removed from my package, but before considering this further, does anyone know whether BT Privacy is a prerequisite for receiving merely a simple ‘International’ flag, as opposed to the full CLI?

    Interesting, thanks.
I just looked at http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8098/~/all-about-bt-privacy and it says that "BT Privacy is a service that gives you more control over incoming calls. It registers you for the Telephone Preference Service (TPS), which helps [my italics] stop unwanted sales calls. We also offer BT Privacy with Caller Display which allows you to see the number of the person who's calling".
In my view, BT Privacy is a non-product, since in practice it does nothing that one cannot do oneself, and even doing this offers little protection against nuisance calls received from the UK and/or from callers which withhold their number, and no protection at all against nuisance calls from overseas.
The web site goes on to say that "BT Privacy with Caller Display costs £1.75 a month, but you can sign up to get it free for a year at www.bt.com/myfeatures (a new 12-month line rental contract applies)".
I'm somewhat puzzled. I used to have to renew my contract periodically in order to get a reduction on the standard price, but because I never received reminders to renew, I usually only realised this when I received a bill that had already inflated the price of my broadband. Eventually however these price rises ceased, so I assumed that, and indeed may have been told, that I'm no longer on a fixed-term contract. The fact that I have been charged in advance for BT Privacy with Caller Display suggests either that I am still on a contract, or that BT is intending to charge henceorth and the information on the all-about-bt-privacy is incorrect. I will ring BT later on. see what the position is, and report back, but it all seems unnecessarily confusing and time-consuming to sort out.
Am I right in thinking, as I asked in my OP, that without BT Privacy with Caller Display no International designation is received?
More generally, what if anything is BT doing to stop the menace of nuisance international calls? If nothing, is this because it makes money in termination charges, and in which case isn't there some merit in the idea that Caller Display should be free?

  • IPhone 5 Early Termination and Account Transfer

My wife and I both have VZW grandfathered unlimited data plans and want to keep it that way. So here is my grand scheme:
We buy two iPhone 5s on a completely new account and two year agreement ($398).  We immediately turn around and close the account(s) and pay the early termination charges ($700).  Bam!  We just automatically saved $200. Right?
So tell me if anyone sees a whole in my dastardly plan.

If you terminate them within 14 days your going to give your phone back.
You have to wait 30 days to cancel. And it might hurt you if you do this again because Verizon keeps a record of all changes like canceling a line within so many days because say next year you do this again for iPhone 6 or another phone they could say well you just cancelled a line why do you need another 1.
When you cancel you have 30 days to pay for the fee. If you can't affairs that you would need to make a payment araingement.
If you use a new account from a different person and put it on your line you can't add insurance to your phone.

  • Terminating of BT Broadband?

    Hi!
I would like to terminate my broadband (12 month contract) after 3 months of usage.
I'm on BT Broadband Option 1 + Free weekend calls. Is there going to be a fee, and how much it would be?
Additionally, how do i terminate the contract? Just by calling up customer services?
    Thanks!

    This table may help:
    http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/dynamicmodules/pagecontentfooter/pageContentF...
Are you sure that you are not on an 18 month contract? If you are on an 18 month contract then the early termination charge would be 15 x £9.75 = £146.25, I think.
