FH is less responsive on new iMac

Hello all,
I have a new iMac and I find that FHMXa is less less
responsive than on my
old G5. There is a slight delay when selecting points and
object, and also
when moving them. Does anyone know is there is a "fix" for
this?
Thanks
Wasn't Mel Gibson screaming FREEHAND at the end of the movie
Braveheart!

Colin,
I am using Leopard and it's all up to date. The iMac has 4GB
of ram. Even
so, FH runs less responsive than on my old G5.

  • Migration Assistant says "Less than a minute to go" but this goes on for hours and nothing gets transferred to my new iMac 27"

Am trying to transfer all my data from my old MacBook Pro 10.6.8 , 2.8GHz, 4GB memory to my new iMac 27" 10.9.4, 3.2 GHz, 8GB and after 3 days I still can't get there.
I am using Migration Assistant. Both computers are on wi fi. I have connected them together with an ethernet cable.
I can get the process going but hours later the computers say "less than a minute remaining" . I have left them alone for more hours but nothing moves on. I them quit and of course I find that nothing has been transferred.
I am not very skilled at all this so I hope someone can help me with an easy solution.
    Thank-you

    Hello again baltwo
The above didn't work so I then tried what you suggested and erased the hard disc, reloaded the OSX software and then tried the Migration Assistant again. Same old problem only now it doesn't get beyond "new mac selecting what to import". When I press continue the screen just goes grey then back to the login page.
However another problem I have is that the free 'bundled apps' ... Pages. Numbers, Keynote, Garageband, iMovie and iPhoto have disappeared! I've been to the App store and into my account but they are not there under 'Purchases".
This is all turning into a nightmare so any help would be very welcome.
    Thank-you

  • How comes that, having everybody issues with infinitely long backups (combining mountain lion on new imac and time capsule) apple doesn't fix it? (my time machine forecasts not less than 6/8 days to complete the first one, 350 gig transferred from a pc,).

Within 6 days someone will switch off the machine, or power will go off, or some error will occur. I will have a backup when I'll have to replace this new Imac....

Always do the first backup at least over ethernet.. even if you have to use the TC in complete isolation from the network. You should be able to do that backup in about 6-8hours, ie overnight.
The setup is easy.. in complete isolation.. if you have no ethernet from the imac.. just use a short patch lead.. plug LAN port of the TC into the iMac. Turn off wireless in the imac. Make sure the airport utiity can locate the TC, if not press reset on the TC and it will go back to router mode.. ignore all the errors .. just locate the hard disk is working.. start up TM and point it to the TC.. do the backup.
Once this backup is done.. the hourly incrementals over wireless should take just a couple of minutes. Although if you are manipulating very large files then you may need to consider getting better connection, either using 5ghz wireless which is much faster but might need extender.. or ethernet or ethernet over power type adapters.

  • Slow scrolling & lag problems using Office with new iMac desktop OS X Lion

Just bought a new iMac 21.5 desktop with OS X Lion after using a PC with windows my whole life. Downloaded latest version of Microsoft Office to use with my spreadsheets for my business and found that whenever I use larger spreadsheets and use filters (500 rows/20 columns) the scrolling is so slow with such a delayed response and lagtime, that it is practically useless. Already checked the possible "duplicate font" problem mentioned on some sites but that did nothing. What can be done to fix this issue???

If the issue only occurs when you use Excel then you may want to click the Office for Mac Product Forums and repost. One thing to look at is how much RAM your system has and how much is FREE. As a general rule of thumb OS X likes 500 MB or more of FREE RAM, keep Activity Monitor running (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and when you sense a slow down look at AM and click the System Memory tab, if you see it's in the 500MB or less range then it's simple, upgrade the RAM. • Problems booting new iMac after using Migration Assistant

My new iMac is less than 24 hours old and I have hit a problem I have not encountered on any Mac I have owned in the last 17 years.
My iMac booted beautifully and I hooked up my firewire external hard-drive because I have a partition there that contains a working user account that I want to migrate to my new Mac. I booted Migration Assistant, followed the instructions and waited for all my software, documents, settings etc. to be transferred to the new machine. Migration Assistant hung and it hung the computer. I tried many times with the same result. The last time though my Mac booted and got to the login screen. I did have auto-login selected so I was surprised by this screen. No matter what I did I couldn't get any response so I rebooted and tried again. Same thing. So, I rebooted in safe mode. Once up and running I deleted the migrated account and rebooted. This time I got the default blue swirly background and nothing else and each time I reboot all I get is the background image and nothing else.
    Help please?

I have solved the problem. The issue was to do with StickyBrain v3.6 StickyBrain has a folder called OpenBase in the library/startupitems folder and this causes the problem. If you are a StickyBrain user and wish to continue using it after upgrading to an Intel Mac then you have to also upgrade to v4.0 of StickyBrain.
The issues regarding Migration Assistant remain unsolved but I am happy that my machine is now working properly again. In the end I ignored Migration Assistant and copied all my files and folders manually. At least I was able to say I was doing something really productive on my computer instead of just sitting in front of it with a trance like smile on my face!

  • Honest opinions on new iMac

    Hi
I need to get a new desktop and wondered if anyone had any experience/opinions of the new iMac?
Has anyone used one with a Fusion Drive in?  Are they good?
I read that the screen is better - any views on that?
Thanks in advance for any responses

NB - Apple employees/testers need not reply

I can speak to this one, having just taken delivery of my new 27" iMac w/Fusion Drive on January 2nd.
My initial impressions are that the Fusion Drive results in much faster boot times...normally less than 15 seconds or so.  The display is a big improvement over my early 2008 24" iMac (although I wish they still offered a 24" model...I really don't need 27"). The speed improvement is nice as well...I rarely see the beachball anymore.
I remain puzzled, though, on why Apple felt that making the iMac thinner was a big design improvement. From the front, it looks identical to the older iMacs. And, making it thinner required ditching the optical drive and moving the SD card reader to the back of the device. I can live without the optical drive (I had to buy an external Superdrive, though!), but moving the card reader to a very inconvenient location was a step backwards in my opinion.
Overall, I'm VERY pleased with the new iMac!

  • How to make a boot disk for new iMac?

I just purchased a new iMac equipped with a bare bones 1TB SATA hard drive.  I want to replace that disk with a 1TB SSD from Crucial (less than 1/2 of the cost of purchasing the iMac with the SSD).  I have a Time machine backup of the iMac on a Time Machine/Airport device; how do I make a boot disk that can get the OS up and running, and able to restore the backup from the Time Machine?

I had not given the warranty issue any prior thought; thanks for pointing that out.  Is there a way around the warranty issue; such as a "factory authorized" way to install it, that is feasible?
    Thanks for the quick response...
    TD
You can take it an AASP to have the install done however you probably would be better off returning the machine (assuming it was bought directly from Apple and is less than 14 days old) and buy the configuration you want. Even if an AASP does install the SSD there is no guarantee Apple will honor the warranty, it's 100% at their discretion.

  • Power button on brand new iMac doesn't work properly?

    Hello,
I am having problems with the power button on my brand new iMac which was purchased 2 weeks ago. Some days I press the power button and everything works fine. And then some days, I get no response from the power button. I then just unplug and replug the power cord from the surge protector back in and then the power button works!
I also shut down every night - I don't put the computer to sleep.
Can someone tell me what is going on? I've searched these message boards and see old post from others out there have also dealt with problem.
Any advice or insight would be most helpful! Thanking you in advance.

A couple of things first your machine has a 1 year warranty and is covered by 90 days of complimentary AppleCare. You should contact AppleCare to get the machine fixed.
Next please carefully read your owners manual, below is what Apple specifys,
"If you'll be away from your iMac for less than a few days, put it to sleep. When your iMac is in sleep, its screen is dark. You can quickly wake your iMac and bypass the startup process."
Personally I only let the monitor sleep, my system has been running like this for 4 years and is the most reliable computer I've ever owned.

  • IPod no longer works with Older iMac (works with new iMac)

    Hi all:
First off sorry about the cross post but I got no response to this question in the other forum. Hoping for help from this group. Thanks!!!!
I have an iMac Duo (20" 2.0Ghz) running 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.1 which recognizes my 5g (and my wife's 4g) no problem. However when I attach either of them to my G3 (G3 500 MHz) running 10.2.8 (iTunes 6.0.5) they are not recognized.
I believe that the 5G won't work because the G3 does not have USB 2. However, I do not understand why the 4G does not work.
The 4G worked with the G3 for about 2 years. I have not tried to attach it to the G3 since we bought new computers (iMac for me, MacBook Pro for her) until today. I wanted to use it to transfer some files from the G3 to the new iMac.
I have tried forcing the 4G into disk mode and connecting it to the G3 but that did not help (I tried this with the 5G also).
I am using a USB cable with the 5G and a firewire cable with the 4G.
According to software update all of the computers are 100% current.
Thanks for any and all help!
    Gary

I'm no geek but I can say that my 5G video iPod works just fine with my B&W G3 (450Mhz processor), which I am pretty sure only has USB 1. My G3 is running iTunes 7 and OS 10.4.5. Updating may solve your problem.

  • Adobe Creative Cloud crashes immediately on launch, won't run on a new iMac 5K / Yosemite.

Adobe Creative Cloud installer (/Applications/Utilities/Adobe Creative Cloud/ACC/Creative Cloud.app) crashes immediately on launch, so I can't install CC on a new iMac 5K running Yosemite. Launching the app to fetch the rest of the CC programs crashes, saying "Creative Cloud quit unexpectedly."
I have an old CS3 Photoshop install, a newish Lightroom install, and now I need to install Premiere from my work Adobe ID. I think this may be the crux of the problem. If the CC Cleaner app worked as advertised, I could wipe the old Photoshop install and just use the new CC Photoshop and everything would be cool, but the CC Cleaner doesn't work. It looks like it works, but the problem persists. In fact, Adobe support told me via twitter that Adobe's installer basically doesn't work on migrated Macs (new Macs where old data has been set up from backups). They called it an OS conflict, but I pointed out that everything else works, so it's pretty much Adobe's conflict.
It seems like a permissions issue, and Adobe thinks it's a permissions issue blocking the ACC applet, yet I've repaired HD permissions and did Disk Repair, run Adobe's CC Cleaner multiple times, attempted to install CC in another admin account on the machine, attempted to install CC from Root, and repeated all this after reinstalling OS X via rebooting with Cmd+R, always end with the same result: Creative Cloud quit unexpectedly.
They also suggested I install on a clean disk, one that hasn't been migrated. To do that, I supposed I have to bring it back to Apple, since I have neither a Yosemite install disc, nor a drive to put one in.
I found an article called "CC applications close immediately after launch" but this tip doesn't work because Creative Cloud applet is the app I can't launch.
    https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/cc-applications-crash-immediately-launch.html
They sound like they're trying to help, but the responses sound like utter BS, and, like the support website, i'm going around in circles. I'm sure I'm not the only person who's had this problem, right? RIGHT?? I'm sure the answer is buried here someplace...
    Thanks in advance!

There doesn't seem to be an uninstaller for CS3, and I've tried the CC Cleaner tool several times. It doesn't work and it is not correctly documented anywhere. For example, there is no log file at "/Users/[user name]/Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.log" as one of the Adobe pages states. For example, there is no log file at "/Users/[user name]/Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.log" so I can't find any success or error states of the tool.
There is a log file at "/Users/[me]/Library/Logs/ACC.log." Would there be anything in there that could shine light on install issues vs. uninstall issues?
Regardless, running Cleaner and then attempting to install ACC repeatedly leads to the error "Creative Cloud quit unexpectedly" upon launching it or rebooting (which launches it automatically). I've been trying various things for weeks to no avail yet.

  • New Imac really noisy after change to SSD

I have TWO Imac's in my room : an Imac 24 inch I bought a few years old and I have a brand new Imac 27 inch a few months old.
A technician working for a well know, huge computer retail chain replaced in both IMAC's the HD by 128 GB SSD (in 24 inch Imac) and a 256 GB SSD (in 27 inch Imac). He also added extra RAM : I now got 8 GB in the 24 inch Imac and 12 Gb RAM in the 27 inch Imac
The 24 inch Imac operates very silent, very quick and very smooth whereas the much bigger and more powerful, new 27 inch Imac now makes A LOT OF NOISE. I am not a sensitive or paranoia person freaky about some computer noise. This is really nervewrecking and constant buzzz. The moment the newest Imac is switched on, the cooler just goes buzzing really loud. This noise has nothing to do with SSD or increase of RAM since they have no moving parts. And the noise is constant. I do NOT use software that requires lots of processing power. I just surf normal websites and do word processing and look at fotos. I don't even look much to video so it's really strange. Where does this noise all of a sudden comes from ?
The 27 inc Imac was silent when I bought it with HD disk, but once the big HD disk gone, the cooler keeps on blazing and buzzing. Awful ! The guys in the computer shop have no idea, the guys from the Apple official reseller shrug shoulders and say it is "normal" without any more explanation.
Could it be that by taking the rather big HD out of the inner frame, that the extra space becoming empty lead to an increase of airflow from the fan/cooler circulating freely in the inner frame and thus generating much noise level ???? Anyway, the noise level is totally unacceptable. SSD is supposed to be absolutely silent but now i paid good money for nothing and am stuck with a very expensive but very noisy imac with a nice 27 inch screen but Imac that works on everyone's nerves in the room and adjacent rooms.
Even guests in the adjacent living room ask what device is generating this constant buzzzzzing.

    Hello,
Likely the 27" iMac had the special Seagate drive with internal temp sensor & the special Apple Rom to handle the fans, unlike the earlier one that had an external sonsor.
Since the late 2009 iMacs came out, replacing the hard drive has caused the internal Hard Drive Fan to start running at around 6000RPM.
This is due to Apple replacing the external Hard Drive temperature sensor with a proprietary firmware and using the drives internal sensor.
Replacement drives do not contain the firmware to deliver temperature data on the temperature sensor cable.
When the iMac does not receive a good signal from the hard drive it puts the fan at full speed to protect the drive.
If you replace your drive, your iMac will initially seem fine, but soon the fan will begin to speed up to full speed. Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) will have a temporary effect, but again the fan will speed up.
Fixes people have used in the past included:
        •    Using smcFanControl and the terminal to set a MAX speed for the fan and writing scripts to start this after every sleep/restart.
        •    Shorting the temperature sensor cable (Not a possibility on 2011 iMacs) this tricks the iMac into thinking the drives temperature is very low, hence slow fan speed.
Both these fixes are less then perfect and leave the drive in a dangerous situation with no protection from overheating.
Another option people try is other Fan Control software. These programs will not work for this particular issue as they often only control the base speed, and if they do control the fans actual speed they rely on the temperature reported by the sensor which is now incorrect.
    HDD Fan Control
HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating.
Instead of HDDFan Control, get the free SSDFan Control

  • New iMac crashes, start up problems, flicker screen...

Purchased iMac four months ago. It seems to be a bit flaky – as a life-long and loyal user of Apple, not what I was expecting! Often have problems crashing or hard disc error messages at start up. Flickering screen.
Also not sure that I got everything that I requested at the store – I had asked for an additional back up drive in store when ordered and I've looked on my iMac and it doesn't seem to have this. Currently backing up to iCloud and on DVDs to make sure I don't lose anything if my computer gives up the ghost and dies!
Bit disappointed really. Never had problems with any Apple products before and saved up for quite a while to upgrade my very old G4 (which still runs like a dream, and only updated because it's operating system became incompatible with latest software updates) to a new iMac (which seems a bit buggy).
Asked around and a few people have found iMac to be less reliable than previous Apple computers. Anyone else have problems with iMac seeming less stable?

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.
You'll have to take up the missing backup drive with the sellers. The iMac doesn't come with one.

  • I'm thinking of  buying one of the new Imacs and am presently a PC user - how hard is it or how can I transfer files from my PC to a new IMac

I am thinking about purchasing a new IMac and presently use a PC.  I would like to find out how difficult it is to transfer files from the PC to the IMac or in more detail - just how is it done.  Many thanks for any responses.

There are several ways by which it can be done. There is a special Migration Assistant for transferring an entire user account from a PC to the Mac. You would have to establish a network connection between the two machines.
Transfer the files you want to an external USB hard drive from the PC then transfer from the external drive to the Mac.
Ask the Apple retailer if they will transfer your data to the new Mac at the time of purchase. You will need to bring the PC with you.

  • How do I get my legitimate songs from iPod to iTunes? Old computer died and have new iMac but same apple id?!!

    HELP ME!
I won't lie, iTunes confuses the **** out of me. I thought I had it sussed though, clearly I was wrong...
Okay, got a new iMac when my last pc finally died. Synced my ipod to it no worries at all, never lost a song. I assumed it was because I had home sharing or because I'd authorised my new computer using my old apple id?
Now I have a problem though. This is the first time I've actually had a good look at what happens when I connect the ipod to itunes. It will let me add new music that I've burned from my cds. However, it won't let me save any of the previously burned music on this ipod to the itunes library, even though I used itunes and the same apple id to do it originally on my old pc. I want to do this so I can transfer some of the music to my iphone which has less memory (we have an ipod playlist and iphone playlist because of the memory available).
Is there a setting I've got wrong or is this because itunes legitimately believes I'm trying to infringe a copyright? I thought my apple id would mean they knew everything I'd done under that id before? Do I have to burn the cds all over again?
Pls ask me to clarify anything if I've not provided the right info.
    Thanks

A lot of content is available to down load from the purchased are of Itunes Store on all devices and computers.
If you do not use iTunes Match, I don't then the computer is your source of your own non purcased content. This you can share with 5 Computers and 5 Devices.
That is why it is important to keep a backup of this data so it can be restored to that computer or mover to a new one and you can resync it to your devices
