File ownership incorrect - can't login!

i accidentally did a
chown -R <myaccount> /usr
on my Mac and now i'm unable to login to the system.
i've tried mounting the hard disk on another Mac using Firewire mount but unfortunately the file ownerships are all mapped to user nobody and doing a
chown -R root /usr
does not have any effect.
is it possible to disable the mapping to nobody?
i've also tried looking at the disk through Disk Utility. there's a "Repair Disk Permissions" button there but the button is disabled.
any ideas on how to fix this problem?
can i somehow enable the root account on my system?

i was able to fix this by unchecking the "Ignore ownership on this volume" checkbox which is visible when you choose Get info for the volume in Finder.
the option can be found under Ownership & Permissions / Details section.
after doing this was able to run
chown -R root usr

Deleted some files- now computer can't login/startup

I was deleting things from my hard-drive a couple weeks ago, mainly just minor OS 9 applications or other seemingly unimportant files/ applications. The computer was fine and acting normally for a few days until i shut it down for the first time since deleting files. It has not been able to start up since- the gray apple screen appears and then the blue screen appears and it begins to boot-up or whatever but then it never gets past the last item to boot-up: "login window starting" It stays on this indefinitely. Im assuming that i just deleted some random thing that the computer needs to login...
So ive tried starting it in single user mode and using disk utility and fsck or whatever and nothing works.
I cant find my install/ restore disks for the life of me, but i do have access to a friend's disks- although his computer is a PowerbookG4 10.3.4 and mine is a PowerbookG4 10.3.9
Anyone know what to do?
should I and can I install my friends install/restore disks (although of a slightly older model) without deleting all my files?

That depends on how much data you have. If you have a lot of data you can use SuperDuper and save your Users Folder to a compressed .dmg. Another option will be to save to an external firewire HDD, if you have one. You would connect it to your friend's (the host) computer.

You can, if there is sufficient space. However, if your OS is damaged, there is not much sense copying a damaged OS which will not boot.

Even if it would, however, it may be a violation of the Software License Agreement which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. However, you do need install disks. Here are your options:
1. You can call Apple Customer Support (not tech support) and request a copy of the original disks which came with your computer. You will need to have your computer Serial number available. There is a fee for this service.
2. You can purchase a Full Retail Version of Panther. You can sometimes find it on eBay. Be sure to read documentation carefully and ask questions to be sure you are getting a Full Retail Version and not a computer specific version.
3. You can purchase a Full Retial Version of Tiger and upgrade to a new OS. To install Tiger your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger.
Tiger can be purchased from the Apple Store or from other online Retailers, or from eBay. Again, if you purchase from eBay be sure to read all documentation and ask questions to be sure you are getting a Full Retail Version.

My HD was full. So i deleted the biggest files related to file vault. After that i disabled the file vault option in security preferences, and restarted the machine. When i tried to connect again, appear the message"error in file vault". How can i fix?

I had identical Installer Log failure notices: I used Houdini to view the invisible files and per Limnos' suggestion cautiously dragged
user > library > preferences > com.apple.installer.plist out of that folder onto my desktop and double-clicked on the .pkg file again and it opened and installed properly.
My Installer now works properly on all .pkg files.

Can't login to repository DB after installing EM using response file

Anyone can help me?
I installed EM 10g grid control 10.1.0.3 on solaris 9, it was a silent installation with response file, with new db. I specified the passwords for sysman, sys,system and dbsnmp in the response file, the installation went smoothly, but after that, when I tried to login to the repository database using the passwords which I set in the response file, it told me that my password was wrong! but the account status are all 'OPEN'. So I have to change the passwords mannually again. Is it OK to specify password in the response file?
Anyone can help me?

What you did doesn't show the Media Browser. It just shows the folders where your media is stored. You may be correct that was all that cobacc wanted.
The Media Browser shows the actual media in thumbnails so that you can preview the media.
However, neither requires any Sharing services to be enabled.

Can't login into NW after a new patch.

Networking 2 computers to share files problem. won't recognize login/pass

hey
i really need help with this.
i now have 2 computers, a powermac G5 and a powerbook G4 connecting to each other with an ethernet cable so i can share files. for some reason when i try to connect as a user instead of guest it won't recognize my login/or password. it was working briefly before.
the only thing i did different was go into my account settings in both computer's preferences and changed the user name and password so they would be the same. they were the same before other than a capital letter but that sometimes affects things so i wanted to make them the exact same. now no matter what i try i cannot login to the network other than as a guest. and i want to be able to access my whole other computer.
this is what it says:
'Unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retype the name and password or contact the server's administrator.'
appletalk is on in the ethernet tab.
file sharing is on.
i've repaired disk permissions.
any help on this asap would be great. thanks

How to use an iPod with more than one computer.

Manual transfer is how you have control of the iPod when using it on more than one computer. Files on the iPod are added and deleted manually by the user and not automatically by the computer and iTunes.

Can't login to Azure from Visual Studio when creating new app.

I already tried this at two different computers.
Install VS 2013
Get VS Update 2
Get VS Web Essentials
Get Azure SDK 2.3
Launch VS, Log-in with MSDN acc.
File-New Project - ASP.NET Web Application (pick MVC + Web API)
Use "Create remote resource - Web Site"
OK
Get asked for Azure login again (sigh..)..I log in.
Get error message: "Unable to create remote resource. 'One or more errors occured'" .. really? eh.. :D
Ok, so now i try the Manage Subscriptions link to check the azure account.
Nothing is there.so I guess I need to sign in again because my previous login got forgotten
I log inagain.
Get dialog with "The task argument contains no tasks. Parameter name: tasks"
Ok, no Azure for me I guess.
btw: I then logged into web Azure portal and noticed I am over the spending limit now, so my subscription was disabled, but if this is the case why I can't login to Azure from VS, then just tell me. Skip those unrelated (for me) error messages.

2 users can't login - HTTP Status 500 - on Teaming 2.0

I have 2 user that can't login to Teaming 2.0. They get this error: "HTTP Status 500". Even if I enter a bogus password for them the "HTTP Status 500" error occurs. I use LDAP authentication to eDirectory. These users DON'T have duplicate objects in my tree. In eDirectory they have first name, last name, full name, phone number and email address entries. You need to be sure that it is not an LDAP problem... the best way is to start from LDAP to investigate. Enable the LDAP trace on eDir with imonitor, during the teaming login. Also you can use ldapsearch to have full details on the accounts in order to compare them with a working user (a space somewhere, an additional attribute, etc...).

File Ownership via Command Line

Hello - oh my I went and did a stupid thing. I renamed my home folder and restarted which logged me as a brand new user. I can see my previous folder in the Users folder with all of it's files and everything is there - but I can't access it through the log-in pane.
I have been told by more than a couple of mac stores that it will require 5-7 days to fix... however I googled it and found one specific document on what to do at the command level to fix this. I need assistance from anyone who knows the right syntax in which to do this. I have started by making a backup of all the original home files I want to keep. This is what I found on-line...
"Changing File Ownership: chown
The chown command is used to change the ownership of files. Only the root user can execute the chown command. The simplest form, and the one in which you'll end up using it the most frequently, is chown <username> <filename> , which changes the ownership property of <filename> to belong to the user <username> . The command can optionally be given as chown <username> : <groupname> <filename> to change the user and group at the same time. Additionally, -R can be specified after the command to cause a recursive change in an entire directory, instead of to a single file. The command documentation table is shown in Table 24.1"
Can someone show me how the command line should look as I proceed with this?

Actually, I was thinking about being even more cautious (being there, done that, ain't pleasant).
Let me make sure I understand where you are:
1/ you have only one login, it's your new name, but the Home associated with it is empty (has all the "regular" folders that come with the creation of a new account)
2/ your old account cannot be accessed upon login but you "ex" home is still there and you have access to it
If that's right, then do 2 things
1/ create a new admin account. Call it whatever you want. In case of anything, you'll still have one with admin privileges. You may want to keep it for the future. It's always a good idea to have such an account, never used but for troubleshooting, where the Preferences are pristine.
2/ start copying (not moving) what you had in your old home into your new one (you wanted that new name anyway, right?), making sure that the privileges are indeed associated with your new name. That should work as you are doing the copying from your new account.
When you are all done and have made sure that everything works, then you'll be able to delete the old folder. Or you may want to keep it around for a while.
If you have too much stuff to copy (movies, etc...), then let me know. Having the "third" account (the one I mentioned in 1) may help you. You could log in with that one, and change the names back of your homes (old and new). You would have to check what you have under Syst Pref/Accounts

Can not login to Revel from Elements 12.

My pictures are not uploading to Revel Premium. The option to "Sign IN to Adobe Revel" on File menu from Elements 12 is greyed out...so it appears we can not login. Any ideas?

I do not know how to paste a screen print to this message. I pasted it to a Word doc but can't find a way to attach it to this message The inability to sign into revel to sync my account is just one problem I am having, not sure if that is why my pics won't go to my revel account or not. (By the way, I am not using an iPad app, I am using my Macbook Pro to sign into Revel via internet.) I was signed in a couple of weeks ago just fine and the pics still would not sync to Revel. (I read on a forum to disconnect then to shut the program down and then restart and sign in to get it to work. Ever since then it has not worked.) Before I upgraded to a paid subscription, pics would upload until I met my free # of uploaded photos. Since I upgraded to a paid account, no more will move to Revel. I have created mobile folders in Elements and Revel will show the 4 folders I have created but they are grey boxes with titles, but no pics inside. The only pics that are on my Revel site are the few I was able to load when it was a free site. No more.
I REALLY need help and have spent countless hours reading every forum, blog post, and problem solving site. Last week I chatted with adobe customer service who had me look at every setting and I apparently have every setting the way it should be to work correctly (except that now I can not sign back into Revel from Edit > Preferences > Adobe Revel -- "Sign in to Adobe Revel" option is greyed out.) They told me that I could call the help line and I would not be charged for the call because I have purchased the software. (A lie.) I called the phone number he suggested and they told me it would be a $29.95 charge for receiving any help with this matter. I told him I am not paying another $30 after I have spent $100 on the Elements software and another $60 on Revel and can't even get it to work. He suggested I chat with someone from Revel department. He walked me through to get me to the right place to chat. The new person on chat was unable to help because he was in "customer service dept." and did not have ability to help with technical problems. He said I could post my problem in the forums but since I had posted another problem 7 days before that was never answered I was reluctant. So I ask, what am I to do?? I can not get the software to work. I spent around 3 hours that afternoon trying to get help. I spent at least 5-6 hours before that trying to fix it myself by reading all the helps and "work around" solutions on the adobe site. I have since then been trying to find a way to save my pics to an external drive because my husband noticed that when on my Elements program under Help>Updates that a error message pops up that says "Adobe Photoshop Elements 12-Your application install seems to be damaged, Please reinstall the application." Unfortunately I am scared to death about losing all my hours of editing pics, organizing photos into folders that I have already done because the program will not allow me to "back-up my photos" on an external drive when choosing that option. I'm currently saving each folder to the desktop and then manually saving individually to an external drive because that is not working either. I am not sure any of this is necessary but I feel I must be prepared if I have to call and spend the ridiculous $30 to get help to finally use the software I purchased a month ago, and they tell me I must uninstall and reinstall the program. By the way, an Adobe Technician installed it for me "remotely" when it would not install the paid version after using the trial version , so if it was done incorrectly It is not my fault. I just need some help and am beyond frustrated. If I had not already sunk so many hours into editing and organizing, I would demand a refund and find another software program that actually works that also has a physical person I can talk to if I have a problem. I mean--any company should at least supply help for a short period of time to make sure it is working after installed. I am so short on time to work on this and just really need help to get this working.

Can't login to WebMail

I have several websites hosted on a single Xserve, only one has the WebMail option enabled. I've been able to use WebMail in the past, but now I can't login. Each time that I try I get the message "Unknown user or password incorrect". Even if I create a new account I get the same message on the new account.
If I run the SquirrelMail configuration test everything seems to be OK.
There's nothing untoward in the httpd log files or the systen.log.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, thanks for the tip I think that's the problem. I can't see anything in the log files but I did recently enable CRAM-MD5 authentication and disabled all other methods.
Did you change authentication methods for IMAP?
If yes, you must reconfigure SquirrelMail as well.
The log to check would be /var/log/mailaccess.log and
/var/log/mail.log
