File protection

Hello
I used the iPhoto library shared for all family members using different accounts on the same mac. This used to work as I did set the unix umask and all files got a 664 protection. Now with iPhoto 9.3 it seems that the default protection has changes. iPhotos always saved the pictures in mode 600. That's anoying. It seems that iPhoto ignores the umask settings. How can this be influenced ?

If you wait till Mountain Lion next month, it'll be a simple 2-click process. Just right click on the disk in Finder sidebar and choose 'encrypt'.
In the meantime, for Lion and earlier, follow the instructions here:

  • EBook file protected error on Cocoon reader

    Hi,
I hope someone here can help with a persistent problem!
My wife and I both have Cocoon eBook readers (model BK7021) and have joined our local library.  We have both created Adobe IDs and have successfully downloaded several books form the library to a desktop PC and a laptop, both running Windows 7.  We have Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 installed.
We can both open and read the books on the computers but when we copy them to the eBook readers we both get the same error 'eBook file protected'.
Can someone explain where we are going wrong?
    Thanks
    Roger

Thank you!  Finally tracked it down to HKCU / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Explorer / User Shell Folders / Personal
    - but it took a bit of finding.  Why regedit couldn't find the string I don't know - either I or it stuffed up somewhere.  Would be nice if there were a option in Reader for where you want it put - or are they trying to keep it as simple as possible (eg for idiots like me?).
    Many thanks, Mylenium.

  • Windows File Protection and a3d.

When I install the driver CD for a X-fi series card on a fresh install of Windows XP, I get a warning in Event Viewer from "Windows File Protection."
    <BLOCKQUOTE dir=ltr>
<EM>File replacement was attempted on the protected system file a3d.dll. This file was restored to the original version to maintain system stability. The file version of the bad file is 80.0.0.3, the version of the system file is 2.9.0.0.</EM>
    [/quote]

Hmm... That is rather strange. Windows doesn't generally include that file on the CD so it is strange that it gets replaced. Do you have a custom Windows XP CD with integrated drivers?
You may avoid the file being replaced by removing your Windows XP CD from the dri've. Windows will try to search for the file, and if it doesn't it will ask you if you would like to keep the "unknown version".
If this is the only file that gets replaced, I wouldn't worry at all. Xou are not likely to play games that only support A3D .0, these were pre-998 games and even then, they do support pure DirectSound3D.

  • Windows File Protection error when installing 9i client

While installing the 9i client I am getting a Windows file protection error message on all 5 of the test machines.
If I cancel out of the message the install finishes correctly and everything seems to function properly.
However, it is prety counterintuitive to have to cancel out of the message when we are wanting to do these installs in silent mode.
Anyone else have this problem, or any ideas on fixing?

    nm, fixed it myself.
The Oracle install was replacing regsvr32.exe with an old version. When WFP detects a file protection problem, it first looks at the %systemroot%\system32\dllcache dir for a known good copy of the file to restore. If it doesn't find one in there, then it pops the dialog up and asks for a CD. If it does find one then it silently restores it in the background.
So, now at the beginning of my script I have a script checking the dllcache dir for regsvr32.exe, if it is there it moves on to the install, if it is not then it copies the one from their current system32 dir into the system32\dllcache dir. That way when Oracle replaces it WFP will silently restore their previous version.

  • Comparison gives error / not show differences for File Protection

We tried to verify on our MS (Version 6.0.2) with comparison two Installations with:
    "Comparison Style:      install to install"
"Level of Detail:      directory and file properties"
(as you can choose in the UI)
    1) Seems that he don't catch file protection (which are different from one Installation to the other, we tried this with a very simple comparison run with only two files to compare .....)
    2) A comparison on a Installation with a lot of Files to compare (BEA-Weblogic Installation) it gives following Error Messages:
A comparison failed because Unable to complete the install to install comparison under path "/opt/bea/wlserver923/weblogic92/server/bin/international"|Ensure that you have read permission on the directory and try again. (600094) on 10/31/08 1:42:11 PM MET. The comparison used settings: wls-9.2.3-1.
But this Directory got the following protection on reference and comparison host:
    [n1sps@usv0412 ~]$ ls -ld /opt/bea/wlserver923/weblogic92/server/bin/international
    drwxr-xr-x 2 wlsadmin wls 4096 Oct 31 12:42 /opt/bea/wlserver923/weblogic92/server/bin/international
    What could be wrong?
Does anybody use this comparison “Install to Install” ?
    Regards, Hanspeter
PS: I've got documented this comparison more exactly in a Word-Doc. But unfortunately there’s no possibility to attach this to the forum.
Edited by: HanspeterK on Oct 31, 2008 6:56 AM

I wonder how much anyone is using this functionality. We are stated to use comparison in "install to install" mode and getting the same error. For me it looks it is failing on empty dirs. We are trying this on both win and solaris machines and getting the same problem.
Did someone got this functionality (which is very good!!!!) working smoothly?

  • Files protected by LiveCycle Rights Management 9 are not indexed?

Hi everybody, I have a question, files protected by LiveCycle Rights Management 9 are not indexed?  is that true?
    Regards.

When you create a policy, one of the properties that you set determines what gets encrypted when the policy is applied to a document.  You can set it to...
Encrypt the entire file, which means that the document could not be searched\indexed as all of the document contents, including any meta data are in an encrypted state.
Encrypt the document except meta date, which means that the document can be searched\indexed based on the meta data as it is NOT encrypted
No Encryption, which means that the document, including any meta data is not in an encrypted state, and can therefore be searched\indexed.
    Hope this helps.

  • Setup file protections

    We install our application in
    HOME := C:/program files/<app-name>
and install our setup.ini file in the same folder. The problem is, in Windows 7,  the protections all files in HOME are set to read-only. So the engineer in charge of customer service is instructing them to go in and change the file protections of ALL files in that directory because, he argues, the instructions are easier to follow. I don't want users in that directory at all. I have tried and failed to write software that would change the protections for me. I have also tried putting the setup file in different directories without any success.
How do I get the application installer to install a setup file on a users computer  that is read/write enabled?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
You should probably put your setup files in the Public App Data folder.  You can do this with a LabVIEW 2011 installer but I know you can't with a LabVIEW 8.2.1 installer.  I don't know when they added this.  If your version of LabVIEW doesn't have this feature then have your application copy the setup file from your Program Files to the App Data folder if it doesn't exist in the App Data folder.  You can get the App Data folder from the registry.  We can give you more details if you need them but tell us what version of LabVIEW you have.

  • Office files protected with AD RMS Client / SDK and Office

    Hello,
I'm facing a strange issue when it comes to open an office file that was protected with AD RMS Client (to be precise, with an application built with AD RMS SDK 2.1). I would like to understand the reasons behind this issue (maybe some missing or wrong configuration)
or if this is just a gui only problem that does not affect the correct behaviour of the whole suite.
    I'm not using templates.
If I protect an office file directly from MS Word (for example, but we have the same with Excel and Powerpoint) and save it, then I can close it and re-open it. The following infobar is displayed:
Now with AD RMS SDK 2.1 we have developed a standalone program that applies the same permissions on office files via the AD RMS Client. When the file is re-opened, the following infobar is displayed:
"Do Not Forward" is shown, no reference to email permissions was added by the client. The description is wrong too, as print permission has been granted, for example.
    Is this behaviour correct?
    How is this infobar created?
Is there a setting (either in client or in server) that may be wrong, and that leads to this issue?
    Thank you,
     Massimiliano

Thanks to Microsoft response, this issue has been resolved.
The license handle needs some additional properties to be set, in order for Office to display this information correctly.
    IpcSetLicenseProperty(licenseHandle, FALSE, IPC_LI_DESCRIPTOR, pIpcTemplateInfo);
The last parameter is a PIPC_TEMPLATE_INFO pointer to a structure of type IPC_TEMPLATE_INFO where
wszName and wszDescription are filled with valid values.

  • Itunes files protected (DJ)

So long story short, i need to use song files and i need to be able to change the formats. (mp3, mp4, etc.) I use a program called serato scratch live that allows me to play music through my turn tables using my mac.
i am able to rip music onto itunes, as well as, d/l from other online stores. The problem is that i purchased a couple hundred songs and now i can't use them. The only way that i found was to burn them and then rip them back onto itunes. That would be great if the sound quality didn't go down.
So, my question would be is there a third party application that can be used on my Mac that would allow me to get/have "rights"? And/or an easier way than burn/rip?
    Thank you for listening.
Also, if there is an Apple pesonnel that is reading this, there are over 100,000 djs in the US alone and they dont use itunes for this simple problem, Apple is one of the only online stores that do not give paying customers rights to the music. It is the sole decision of apple and not that of the record labels. So as advice, you can only imagine how much money could be made off djs alone considering the billions of songs they d/l.

Absolutely correct, Dave. As an industry professional, the term we use for this is "perfomance rights".
Here in the US, the three performance rights societies are ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. Every songwriter MUST associate with one of the three. They grant businesses the permission they need to perform music publicly.
These organizations have representatives scour bars, clubs, retail stores, hotels, restaurants, etc., to see if they have current public performance licenses in place if music is being played. If not, fines can be substantial. Even radio stations must apply for a blanket license with these organizations if they wish to play music to fill in the period of time between commercials.
As far as DRM as a whole is concerned, it's not solely the record companies this protects, but also the songwriters and music publishers (who control the underlying compositions of the recording) as well.
To the original poster: (assuming all public performance licenses are in place...)
Unfortunately, to use iTMS purchases through ScratchLIVE involves burning an audio disc and re-importing into iTunes into one of their supported formats, thus a slight degradation in sound quality. (albeit marginal compared to what the human ear is capable of discerning)
If most of your concern lies with the quality being degraded, the alternative would be to either purchase the actual CD, or subscribe to professional DJ services which issue promotional compilations to their clients for airplay.
Stripping the FairPlay DRM from the iTMS tracks is not an option.

  • Can't open .pps file protected with KN'09

    Hello All,
Can't open Powerpoint .pps protected file with KN'09 on macbook snow-Leopard.
    any help is appreciated
    Thanks a lot

    Hello All,
No body can help me ???
I try to give you more details:
Keynote read easily all *.pps or *.ppt, but when those files are password protected, neither
MS Office 2008 for mac nor Keynote '09 nor changed .pps to .ppt still can't read thoses files. Website : http://www.canhnongminhduc.com/Pages2010/hinhanhPPSOwners2M10.php?owner=TS
When I try to read those files, an error message displayed : Importation "Error : the file ... is encrypted. Try to save it without encrypted!"
    the error message is ambiguous:
1/ if file is protected, means the owner didn't want everybody to changed the content.
2/ We don't know the owner how can we as to give the file without encrypted???
That is a shame that Keynote did not think to give us the possibility to READ ONLY the file.
Hopelessly find a workarround for this situation.
    regards,
    Bichnm

  • Windows XP Home File Protections Prevent Sync

I have a Palm Vx, and have used it since 1999 with the same PC (!) which was converted many years ago to Windows XP. I just bought a newer computer, also running XP Home. I have had a lot of trouble installing software on it because my ancient computer had a FAT32 file system on it, and the new one is NTFS. Apparently, FAT32 had no bit for setting the read-only attribute for files, so any account could read and write almost anywhere.
Now, I have installed my Palm 3.1 desktop (I also tried 4.1.4). As long as I have Administrator privileges, everything works great. But if I use a limited account, I cannot get to my profile. When I try to hotsync, it asks if I want to create a new account on the PC, and when I do, it completes the hotsync but cannot access the profile.
There doesn't seem to be any way with XP Home to cause read-only files to be made readable - this is a well-known bug that was never fixed (even using attrib does not work). Is there any way to tell the software to put the profiles in another folder that is writeable?
    Post relates to: Palm Vx

Thanks! That works after some playing around. The additional part I discovered you need is this:
    1) Give your user account admin rights
    2) Install the Palm Desktop logged in as that user
    3) Make sure the Admin account (not necessarily the user account) on the computer has a password
    4) Set the options for palm.exe (right-click on palm.exe, under Properties...) so that it can execute as another user
    5) Take away the admin rights to the user account
Now, when starting the desktop, it should ask if it should run as you or another user. Leave the box checked to run as you, but uncheck the box "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity." The desktop will then come up and XP/Home protections have been circumvented. Set the program directory to a writeable folder, and a hotsync will work and the data will appear in the desktop.

    Hi all
guys plz help me can i protect my dump file. the case is what about if i take the SCOTT's data as dump with exp utility then any dba who has this file may import it. I want to restrict the user to import and only the person who took the export must import it.

Hi, this situation is irregular, but you can use some method for encrypt the files, for example for encrypt files on Linux system look the next link.

  • File Protection Code

    Dear All,
I have an Excel File. This file have macros. I send this file to my colleagues by E-mails. I want that my colleagues should not be able to transfer this file own their own. The file should work only when I send any body. Could you please help me to find
the solution as it is important.
    Kahn Cann

You can password protect the file but the user has the option to share the password.
If this is a one-off issue, you're probably out of luck.
If it's a larger need to protect files, you can build a rights management infrastructure:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179103(v=office.15).aspx
At the end of the day, if you give someone a file, they can share the information and there's nothing much you can do about it. (if the NSA loses data, what chance do you have?)
