Filtering with Smart Collection

In a next version of LR (2.2 or 3.0) I would love see the collections window improved.
When I select two Smart Collections (by Ctrl-clicking) in the menu, LR comes up with all photos that appear in one or both of the collections I selected. When I select one Smart Collection and one normal Collection it displays only the photos that appear in both collections. This is how I want SC's to work as well!
Am I the only one who wants this to change?

Depends upon who you ask.
There are are those of us who believe items should propagate through a stack and others who do not. There are also some who think that component images (HDRs, Panos, etc) where multiple images are used to make a final, behave one way and other stacks behave another.

  • Better filtering for smart collections - by number of keywords

    There is a nice feature for smart collections that allow filtering keywords by "are empty" and "aren't empty"
    I would like to filter keywords by X number of keywords.
    It's great to have a collection that tells me that there are no keywords but if I add only one keyword I then have to find the image by that keyword.
    As a work flow this doesn't work great. I want to start with images with no keywords, then work through images with 1 keyword and 2 etc. To continue the process you would also need to remove the images from the smart collection (like remove from collection for standard collections) being able to remove the image from collection of has only 3 keywords should apply also to has 4 keywords etc. This way if you have an image that only needs 1 keyword you don't have to remove the image from every progressively higher amount of keyword collections.

  • Problems with smart collection "doesn't contain"

    I have photos with keywords like
    xxxxx, grand canyon,xxxxx
    xxxxx, grand island, xxxxx
    xxxxx, grand sable dunes, xxxxx
    What I need is the abilty creat a smart collection that excludes grand canyon, but leaves in grand island, grand sable dunes
    I can't get doesn't contain to work with
    grand canyon
    "grand canyon"
    Any ideas?

    Tudor asks, "What I need is the ability to create a smart collection that excludes grand canyon, but leaves in grand island, grand sable dunes".   Tudor wants to exclude "grand canyon", but include "grand island", "grand sable dunes", "red rock canyon", and presumably every other keyword except "grand canyon".
    BKKDon's suggestion of
    Match all: Keywords contains grand; Keywords doesn't contain canyon
    doesn't quite work, because it excludes "red rock canyon".   A somewhat better query might be:
    Match none: Keywords contains words grand canyon
    The "contains words grand canyon" will match all images with the words "grand" and "canyon" in the keywords, and "Match none" inverts that and selects all other images.  
    But this still isn't right, because it will exclude an image having the two keywords, "Grand Island" and "Canyon Drive".  As Rob explained, the Keywords criterion splits all the keywords up into "words", and then treats all the words in all the image's keywords as a single field to be searched.
    Two possible workarounds:
    - If you just want to manually exclude images with the keyword "grand canyon", use this recipe: 
    In the Keyword List pane on the right, click the arrow to the right of the keyword "grand canyon".  This will filter just those images with exactly "grand canyon". 
    Select all the images.
    Turn off the filter by clicking None in the Library Filter bar.
    Do Edit > Invert Selection to select all the images that don't have exactly "grand canyon".
    Add the selected images to the Quick Collection or another collection, if necessary.
    - Use the plugins Space Urchin or Any Filter, as Rob suggested.
    In general, LR's text-matching operators are a mess.  Inexplicably, LR doesn't have exact match, the most basic keyword operator, and without exact match, it's difficult to work with a controlled vocabulary of keywords, as this discussion and many others have highlighted.  Users repeatedly get all twisted up trying to understand how to use LR's weird text-match operators.

    Windows XP
    My situation:
    I have created a smart collection that comprises over 500 images
    the collection is based on image files I have tagged with the keyword "Canada Day"
    Within the smart collection, I have additionally tagged specific images with either the keyword RAW or the keyword JPG
    there are approximately 275 images that have all three keywords within the Canada Day smart collection
    I want to create an AV show based on the images that have all three keywords, so I somehow I need to be able to remove the files that don’t have the three keywords
    I thought I could accomplish that by creating a new collection / smart collection using the find function with the following parameters:
    "Source"  my top level folder (three years' worth of image)
    Criteria:
    Keyword: Canada Day
    Keyword: JPG
    Keyword: RAW
    ·         Match if: Any criteria are met
    I thought that would return me all files that had one or more of those keywords, but instead I got the message “no items to display”.
    I tried another approach: removing the unwanted files from the smart collection; however, that functionality does not appear to exist in smart collections. I know I could remove the keyword “Canada Day” from the unwanted files, but I would rather not do that.
    Question: how can I create a subset of a smart collection?
    Question: why did the find function not work?
    I’ve looked for answers online, through Adobe Help, and in my collection of Photoshop books, but have not been able to get any answers.
    It would be great if the Forum could help me.

    Know nothing about Smart Collections, but question what you are really trying to do.
    If you are trying to find the jpeg or raw images, they are not keywords, unless you specifically labeled them as such.  You need to search for "Document Type" and then select jpeg or raw.
    For search to work the folders must be indexed.  Otherwise you will get "no items to display".  If you visit the folder and let the spinning arrow in lower left hand corner finish the folder is indexed.  Otherwise check the box in search window "include non-indexed folders".  THis will be slow as it will index every folder.
    Also, search works from where you start down.  So make sure you start high enough in the directory tree to include all the folders of interest.

  • Help with Smart Collections

    I have constructed a Smart Collection I use to begin my workflow. I bring my just downloaded photos into the collection.  Tis is my frist selection. I will eather pick or reject the photo. No other rating or lable is used, only pick or reject. Problem I have 2 photos that are flag as a pick, but I can't get them to move to the next stage. Any ideas ? The collection operation is: "Picked Flag is Unflagged"

    Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Upon import, I place the photos
    in a collection. At that point the photos are not flagged. One I flag a
    photo to keep it moves to a smart collection,if flagged as a reject it goes
    to the delete folder called metedata. There it has the creator, name
    address and so on placed in the photo a red lable is place on the photo,
    next step is to rate the photos. I rate from 2 to 5 stars, once ratted a
    green lable is inserted. Next step is the key wording once keyword is
    completed a yellow label. Next are there any PP to be done. Is so PP
    is taken care of, a blue lable is placed. If none a purple lable. Once a
    purple has been placed on the photo the only operation to be completeed is
    the disposition of the work. For that I used the job ident. Onced
    identified where it is going it is placed into a folder for that job. This
    way I can stop at the end of the day and come back the next and Know right
    where left off.
    Like I said onced a photo is flaged, keep or reject it is not moving to the
    next step. Any suggestions?

    I am trying to set up a smart collection to list files that are blank in the Location field.  Some fields such as Caption allow you to check if the field "is empty".  Location does not allow the "is empty" option.  What can I do to check if Location is empty or blank?

  • Smart Collection bug with Title doesn't contain rule

    There are various articles on smart collections that check if the "Title" field is filled or not. Because the "Title" field doesn't have an "is empty" like function, the sugested solution is to use the rule:
      Title   doesn't contain   a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r,s,t,u,v,w,x,y,z
    But there is a bug in this rule. I found that the letter 't' is causing a problem. The letter 't' seems to include all characters.
    Situation:
    Four images that have a their Title field as follows:
      Image 1:
      Image 2: 2014-01 - Street Photography.dng
      Image 3: 2014-01
      Image 4: Some Image
    (Image 1 has an empty title)
    Four smart collections with the following rules:
      Collection 1: Title   doesn't contain   a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r,s,t,u,v,w,x,y,z
      Collection 2: Title   doesn't contain   0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

    My expected result of the smart collections is:

    The actual result of the smart collections is:
      Collection 1: Image 1
      Collection 2: Image 1 and Image 4

    I'm using Lightroom 5.7 on a MacBook Pro 17" (mid 2010), i7 @ 2.66GHz, 8GB RAM and 2 x 240GB SSD's running on OS X 10.10.1
    My questions are:
    Can anyone, specially from the Adobe Lightroom team, confirm this?
    How to solve this issue?

    That is a bizarre bug.  There is an even simpler way to reproduce the problem: Have two pics, one with title "a" and the other with title "t".  The criterion "Title Contains a" correctly shows just the first picture, but the criterion "Title Contains t" shows both.
    Searching with smart collections and filters has numerous bugs, but this one is by far the most surprising.  As a geek programmer, I'd love to know what causes this!

  • Smart collection and folder names with "_"

    I have problems when making Smart Collections based on folder names
    My folder name is 2009_11_20 Mist
    When I make a Smart collection with "Folder" Stars with 2009
    I get a lot of files
    When I change the  2009 to 2009_11 I get no files. Even when I make 2009_ I get no files
    When I change the 2009 to Mist and the "Starts with" to "Contains" again I get the desired files.
    When I change the 2009 to 2009_11 and the "Starts with" to "Contains" again I get no files.
    It seems that LR with Smart Collections cannot handle the "_" character???
    Who can help?

    It's a bug. The usual workaround is to use hyphen as the separator in your folder names instead of an underscore.

  • Smart Collections / Text Filter - exact Meaning of Comparison Operator

    Can anybody explain to me (in technical or IT terms) what exactly the different comparison operators (contains, contains all, contains words, starts with, ends with, ...) are supposed to do?
    I got confused by doing the following:
    I have an original image with 2 virutal copies, one containing "Copy 1", the other one "Copy 2" in the Copy Name attribute.
    I was playing around with smart collections (and text filters as well), trying to identify all my VCs with the term "Copy 1" in the Copy Name attribute.
    I notice that Starts with or Ends with Copy 1 does not show any results (?)
    Contains Copy 1 will also show images with Copy 2, Copy 3, Copy 4 .... (seems to be "Copy OR 1")
    Contains all Copy 1 will also show images with Copy 10, Copy 11, Copy 12
    Contains words Copy 1 does not show any results (?)
    How can I search for an exact term (including spaces) in an attribute (like "Copy 1" in Google)?

    In Text filter you should be able to use Copy Name Contains All Copy 1+
    The + sign means Ends with.
    The same approach can be used with Smart Collections

    Create a smart collection using "Label text"--"doesn't contain"--"xxx".
    The collection *shows* images with the "xxx" label text just as if the collection was created using "Label text"--"contains".
    Produceable 100% of the time.

    Is there any info (metadata or something) one could use to sort uncompressed from compressed PSD/PSB files in Bridge?
    Something that could be used in filters for smart collections would be nice.

    FYI, the file is a photographic panorama based on several .CR2 photos taken in July, 2012 and processed in CS5's camera RAW/Photoshop.  Beyond the metadata, here are no fonts or text in the file.
    1.  I changed Maximize ...File Capability from "Never" to "Always" and the flattened file saved and loaded OK, though I can't figure why given Adobe's description of this option. "If you work with PSD and PSB files in older versions of Photoshop or applications that don’t support layers, you can add a flattened version of the image to the saved file...".  The file saved in this manner is ~8% larger and is not my preference as a routine since I've TB's of photo files.  By the way, out of thousands of .psd/.psb files, the one being discussed is the first to give me the error.
    2.  I've tried saving/reloading the file on another computer with Win XP Sp3/CS5...again with Maximize Capability OFF.  Same problem.  Turn ON Maximize Capability and it works.  As with the Win 8 machine, Bridge could neither create a thumbnail or read Metadata.
    3.  I've purged the Bridge Cache, made sure there were no old PS page files, reset PS preferences, and disabled my 2 plugins with no change in the problem.  Windows and Adobe progs are all updated.  Saving to a different HDD has no effect.
    The problem occurs on 2 computers (Win XP/Win 8), two versioins of Photoshop (CS5/CS6), and "Maximize" On/Off togles the problem.  My guess it is a bug in PSD processing routines.
    If I can't find a fix, will keep with Maximize ON and deal with the larger files that result...the cost of insurance, I suppose.

    Well, DevMeta is the slowest for doing initial metadata aquisition, but then is the fastest to use, since it harnesses Lightroom's native lib filter & smart collection mechanisms. It keeps develop metadata up to date in the background, ready for lib filters and smart collections.
    AnyFilter aquires metadata on demand, but does it fairly quickly, so if you only use develop metadata on special occasions, and don't care if access is via native lib filtering or smart collections, it may be preferrable to DevMeta.
    Jeffrey Friedl makes some of the most polished plugins of any author I know, but I'm not very familiar with Data Explorer - I'm sure it's great..
    Doesn't take long to try 'em out though .

    Hi,
    If you select ALL images that are in your Smart Selection that you wish to keep in a collection, then create a new 'Non-Smart' Collection, all the selected photographs are automatically added to your new Collection (well, they are in LR 3.3RC on Windows 7). You can then delete the 'Smart' collection, and add / delete photos to your new collection as you wish.

  • Lightroom Adobe Revel Smart Collections

    Hi There,
    when i first tried the export function from LR to Revel i was totally thrilled because most of the time i work with smart collections. i just upoaded them to Revel from LR. From time to time some of the photos belong to more of one smart group. that wasn't any problem until the last 3 or 4 weeks. LR just showed an infobox saying that i will upload a newer version from a photo that is already in my Revel Album. But now LR does not export any photo if it is already in another album. this is a big problem for me, because changes on certain photos will not be updated any more. it is really frustrating that adobe changed this feature because Revel (what i already pay for) becomes almost useless for me. Organizing the photos into Albums in Revel is no option, because i have them already organized in LR.
    Anybody with the same problem? Any workarounds? Any official comment from Adobe?

    In fact, Add one image to multiple albums is supported by Revel plug-in in Lightroom. Click the “Replace” button will allow the photo to go to multiple albums.
