Smart Collections / Text Filter - exact Meaning of Comparison Operator

Can anybody explain to me (in technical or IT terms) what exactly the different comparison operators (contains, contains all, contains words, starts with, ends with, ...) are supposed to do?
I got confused by doing the following:
I have an original image with 2 virutal copies, one containing "Copy 1", the other one "Copy 2" in the Copy Name attribute.
I was playing around with smart collections (and text filters as well), trying to identify all my VCs with the term "Copy 1" in the Copy Name attribute.
I notice that Starts with or Ends with Copy 1 does not show any results (?)
Contains Copy 1 will also show images with Copy 2, Copy 3, Copy 4 .... (seems to be "Copy OR 1")
Contains all Copy 1 will also show images with Copy 10, Copy 11, Copy 12
Contains words Copy 1 does not show any results (?)
How can I search for an exact term (including spaces) in an attribute (like "Copy 1" in Google)?

In Text filter you should be able to use Copy Name Contains All Copy 1+
The + sign means Ends with.
The same approach can be used with Smart Collections

Hi,
I've created Smart Collection, which acts on my complete library.
But, at times I want to use the 'same criteria' defined in the smart collection - but confine them to a group of pictures, based on keyword/folder.
So, is it possible to add my 'Smart Collection' as a filter param.

Smart Collection-Collection Filtering

Is there a way to use a smart collection to filter on another specific collection name? Trying to use a smart filter to show ranked photos from 2010 which are NOT in the Best of 2010 manual collection. As I move photos into the Best of 2010 collection they drop from the smart filter as they should. However, the fact that a photo is in another collection, completely different name, ends up causing the photos to be excluded from the smart filter. It's like the collection filter is a yes no for being in any collection; regarless of the name.

Nevermind. I need to be more carefull in my naming and when to use quotes. Typing in the name Best of 2010 in the collection does not contain filter, without double quotes, means that any collection name with any of the words (Best, of, 2010) are excluded. Putting double quotes around the name got the results I was expecting; excluding the photos in the "Best of 2010" collection specifically.

Smart Collection and copyright

I see how to set up a smart collection for copyright status. But I do not see how to set up a smart collection or filter that selects on whether the copyright field itself has been filled in (contains the © copyright symbol).
Is there any way to do that? It seems to me that a flag saying an image is copyrighted is not terribly effective of the copyright statement itself is omitted.

Smart collection question

All,
1. Is there anyway a smart collection can filter images on whether a particular preset has been run?
2. Or, is there any way for a preset, when run, to add a keyword to the selected images? (This would make 1. above, easy)

You do not mention the Lightroom version you are using but Lr 3 has a Develop Preset filter.

Smart collection has "source color profile" as filter option, does not work on camera profiles

In Lightroom 5 i tried to use the "source color profile" filter option in smart collection, however it only seems to work on rgb files (jpg, tiff) that have a profile embedded. It does not work on values like "Adobe Standard" which is a "source" profile of a RAW file, or any of the camera profiles i can choose fo given Raw file. What am i doing wrong?
The Help does not give any clue on this, nor does the coverage by any of the Lightroom guru's like Juleanne Kost.

In my opinion the filter is acting correctly.
The Adobe Standard profile is not a profile defined in the source file, it is a profile assigned to the file in the raw converter and used with raw files that do not have a source color profile, already, so to me the filter is acting correctly because “source” means where the profile comes from, rather than what profile a master photo has had assigned to it.
The source-color-profile option is useful to determine the size of the color gamut in a file’s color numbers which indicates its suitability for various purposes: An sRGB file can be safely uploaded to the web, an AdobeRGB file is going to look right on a wide-gamut monitor and printablebut shouldn’t be uploaded to the web, while a ProPhotoRGB file has a large color space and can be safely edited in a way that adjusts the colors significantly, especially if it is 16-bit, without color-banding or posterization, but a ProPhotoRGB file will probably not look good if directly uploaded to the web or sent to a print-shop that doesn’t do their own color profile conversions.
I would agree that being able to filter raw files based on the assigned color profile would also be useful, but this is a different thing, to me at least, than filtering by the source-color-profile.

Filter or Smart Collection for Exported Images?

I want to keep track of the images I export. (in most cases to skydrive). Can I set up a filter or criteria for a smart collection to do this?

You perhaps have the free uploader rather than the full plug-in which costs about $10 and can be used with the LR Publish Service function which identifies modified photos that need re-publishing and gives you a record of what has been uploaded, in the form of a collection.

Bug: Smart Collection/Label text/doesn't contain

LR 2.1 & 2.2, 64-bit, Vista:
Create a smart collection using "Label text"--"doesn't contain"--"xxx".
The collection *shows* images with the "xxx" label text just as if the collection was created using "Label text"--"contains".
Produceable 100% of the time.
Any one else have the same problem?

That is a bizarre bug. There is an even simpler way to reproduce the problem: Have two pics, one with title "a" and the other with title "t". The criterion "Title Contains a" correctly shows just the first picture, but the criterion "Title Contains t" shows both.
Searching with smart collections and filters has numerous bugs, but this one is by far the most surprising. As a geek programmer, I'd love to know what causes this!

Lens setting as Filter and/or Smart Collection?

Hello,
In the "view Option" menu I can choose to show "lens setting" parameter (focal lenght).
But I can't filter the images by "lens setting", there isn't this option in the Library filter - metadata.
Also a I can't create a Smart collection by "Lens setting".
There is the "lens" option showing lens model only...
Can you help me?

The screen shot shown below shows one way of creating a Smart Collection that filters shots that may have been taken the range 21-28mm. Note that for this type filtering you need to use any for the Match rather than all. I find that contains words in this type of filter reduces the number of false positives (e.g. 240 mm can get through contains all whereas it's filter out by contains words)

Screen text:They are labels that you can display beside your selection-screen parameters/select-options.. from the ABAP editor, use the menu option Go to> Text Elements>Selection Texts.

Missing Smart Collection Filter?

I've tried:
- Opening other smart collections
- Opening other events and other smart collections
- Opening other projects, events, and other smart collections
- Restarting the application
- Restarting computer
- Reinstalling the application

Have you tried trashing your preferences?
Unexplained faults like this can often be fixed by clearing out FCP X's preferences (for some reason, they get knotted up from time to time).
Download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and perfectly safe, both to download and use).

With Preference Manager, you can backup the Prefs when FCP X (or any of the Apple Professional Applications) are working normally. Then when either of the applications are acting strangely, Trash the Preferences, then Restore from your backups (just a mouse-click).
If you trash the prefs and don't restore them, you will need to manually restore all your FCP X settings again, so it's a great idea to backup Preferences from time to time when FCP X is working well, then your backups are up to date.
Doesn't fix every problem, but it fixes a lot.

When editing an image in ps from a lr 4.2 smart collections image not shown back in smart collection

Hi all,
I have noticed at LR 4.2, that if you edit an image of a smart collection using PS (edit in PS function threw LR) and then save, the image is not appearing in the specific smart collection. Instead image appears in the parent folder from where the smart collections retrieves images.
Has anyone notice that as well??
Forgot to mention that my parent folder with files is a collection created with virtual copies of seleveted files. If i edit in Photoshop directly threw this virtual copies collection then the files appears in smart collections as well. but if i edit in PS directly from smart collections then files dont appear into smart collections neither at the virtual copies collection!!

"obviously you use virtual copies when creating those collections" - why? It seems to me that this just increases the number of images in your Library for no benefit, unless you want to independently edit the two image versions, one inside the Event collection and one outside the collection. If you ever wanted to see an unedited version of a particular image, LR retains the history (and before/after view) needed to show that, within the single thumbnail.
It is not necessary to make a Smart Collection in order to show only picked images from a particular event. You can use a Filter to show just the picked images and hide the rest. That means you can work inside the collection, and that means that when you edit an image to PS, the new LR version WILL inherit the collection membership as well as the Pick status, and therefore will immediately show next to the image it is based on.
I think this is going to be simpler and easier - BTW you don't have to go back to Library Grid view in order to apply filters, only in order to configure them in the first place. By saving Filter presets with a name, you can then select between these directly [from the menu at the right end of the Filmstrip] while you work, even in Develop- for example, "no filter", "picked", "unpicked", "rated two or more", whatever you want. Also you can switch between the recently-viewed collections and folders [from a menu when you click on the image details text toward the left end of the Filmstrip], to change the underlying content of the Filmstrip, to which you are applying these filters.
By "using selection criteria other than membership in a manual collection", I just meant: a special keyword, or a particular folder, or some combination of such things. But if you prefer to put images into a Collection, you can just use that directly and IMO you don't need the SC.
I personally like to have some kind of sufficiently identifying keywords on the image anyway, so that Exported copies will also show this information automatically... since an exported image will not reveal what collection its master image belonged to, that classification alone is not enough IMO.

Smart Collection Usability ERs

Smart Collection support is quite a powerful tool in LR. Here are a few usability, fit and finish items that I think would help folks out:
Ability to create a copy (duplicate) of an existing smart collection or smart folder. This should be done by menus and drag drop.
Ability to create a smart collection or published smart folder based on the currently selected collection/folder.
Ability to dragdrop a Smart Collection to a Published Folder Set (move and copy).
Ability to dragdrop Smart Folders (and Folders) between different Published Services (move and copy).
In Smart Collection dialog, you guys should have a comment about availability of the Alt/Option key usage for creating nested queries. This is a usability omission.
The following are suggestions for Text Searches (both filter bar and smart collections/folders)
Wildcard search using basic stuff like *,?
Exact match expression delimiters. ex. "One and Two"
In Smart Collection dialog, case-sensitive checkbox
Suggest adding example expressions right in Help file to show people various scenarios

Problems with smart collection "doesn't contain"

I have photos with keywords like

What I need is the abilty creat a smart collection that excludes grand canyon, but leaves in grand island, grand sable dunes

Tudor wants to exclude "grand canyon", but include "grand island", "grand sable dunes", "red rock canyon", and presumably every other keyword except "grand canyon".
BKKDon's suggestion of
Match all: Keywords contains grand; Keywords doesn't contain canyon
doesn't quite work, because it excludes "red rock canyon".   A somewhat better query might be:
Match none: Keywords contains words grand canyon
The "contains words grand canyon" will match all images with the words "grand" and "canyon" in the keywords, and "Match none" inverts that and selects all other images.
But this still isn't right, because it will exclude an image having the two keywords, "Grand Island" and "Canyon Drive". As Rob explained, the Keywords criterion splits all the keywords up into "words", and then treats all the words in all the image's keywords as a single field to be searched.
Two possible workarounds:
- If you just want to manually exclude images with the keyword "grand canyon", use this recipe:
In the Keyword List pane on the right, click the arrow to the right of the keyword "grand canyon". This will filter just those images with exactly "grand canyon".
Select all the images.
Turn off the filter by clicking None in the Library Filter bar.
Do Edit > Invert Selection to select all the images that don't have exactly "grand canyon".
Add the selected images to the Quick Collection or another collection, if necessary.
- Use the plugins Space Urchin or Any Filter, as Rob suggested.
In general, LR's text-matching operators are a mess. Inexplicably, LR doesn't have exact match, the most basic keyword operator, and without exact match, it's difficult to work with a controlled vocabulary of keywords, as this discussion and many others have highlighted. Users repeatedly get all twisted up trying to understand how to use LR's weird text-match operators.

Finding Virtual Copies in Smart Collections

Is there any way to find virtual copies in smart collections without using "copy name is not empty" ? Basically I am trying to use copy name as a version number for all images, include the base image which is the original. But this then makes it difficult to find the actual copies themselves. Any ideas?

The only caveat is that the metadata is not updated immediately, so you need to "manage" the metadata updating and/or your expectations.
Funny - I just ran into the need for this last night - I solved by making sure all virtual copy names were distinguishable from master copy names, still: because of Lightroom's text metadata processing shortcomings (e.g. space handling and "Big Mallard Ducks" bug), It really is best to have a yes/no rule.
