Final DVD Question

I just finished compressing a video with the best setting for DVD. I notice when I watch back in my DVD player there is one part of the clip that has scrolling text. That part the text is blurry when it wasn't on my original FCP sessions. What do I need to adjust to fix that?
Thanks!

This is your LAST question about DVDs or this is a question about the last DVD you will ever do?
You will need to view your DVD on a TV set and tell us what you see to determine what we tell you next. "Blurry" is a bit subjective.

  • Black Flashes in Premiere and on Final DVD

I was not too concerned about the situation in the Source Monitor when about every 4 seconds I see a very fast, but obvious (nonetheless) Black Flash/Flicker on the screen. I thought it may be just a playback/RAM thing and that it would not go onto the final DVD burn.  However, that was not the case, the Export, Burning and Playback of the DVD carried the Black Flash over. I am using Premiere Pro CC 2014. The footage is a mix of a Canon XH A1 and a Panasonic GH3. I have tried Square Pixels, NTSC and just a host of things that I lost track on, but it is annoying and obvious and has to be fixed. I am hopeful that there is an easy answer -- Please Help!!!

Same issue here exporting to MPEG2. I'm using Premiere Pro CC 2014 on a Mac Book Pro. My source video is AVCHD. I'm getting a frame of black at a regular interval of 1 second. This only occurs with Premiere Pro CC 2014. My older version of Premiere Pro CC exports it fine.

  • Lost my m2v and ac3 files and want to recosntruct from a final DVD

I lost the compressed files m2v and wav that I used to generate a menu driven DVD at the time I was using a Windows based PC (I used Pinnacle Impression with a menu to generate the final DVD.
Now I no longer use this PC and made the big step to the Mac world in buying a MacPro with FinaCutPro and DVD STudio Pro. The only thing I have left is the final DVD with its usual contents (VOB files).
Is it possible to find a way to import the VOB files (with the sound) into DVD Studio Pro, split it by Chapter and re-create a brand new menu ? Or using Compressor or FCP in intermediate steps before using DVD Studio Pro ?

    Francois:
Is it possible to find a way to import the VOB files (with the sound) into DVD Studio Pro, split it by Chapter and re-create a brand new menu ?
You can use * MPEG Streamclip * to extract the original m2v and ac3 files from the VOB file without any quality loose, and use such files in a new DVDSP project. You'll have to rebuild your menus and navigation.
    Hope that helps !

  • Importing selected clips from a finalized DVD into PPCS4?

I'm looking for the best way to extract small segments of video from a FINALIZED DVD (DVD-R) onto my computer for further editing.  I've tried with Premier Elements, Premier Pro CS4, Roxio, Norton and a few others.  Most all of them all import the complete file rather than giving you the option of selecting a specific piece of video.  For example, if I create a project consisting of 10 entertainers/acts in PP CS4 and take it to ENCORE to create a DVD disc, it is created as a single file.  Now, let's say I want to export/extract a specific entertainer/act.  WHAT I WANT TO DO IS VIEW/SEARCH THE DVD,  FIND THE ACT I'M LOOKING FOR AND CREATE AN 'IN' AND 'OUT' POINT TO EXTRACT/COPY/EXPORT THE WANTED ACT INSTEAD OF THE COMPLETE MOVIE/PROJECT.
Even when I use Premier Elements...I go to the GET MEDIA tab (from PC DVD drive) and the VIDEO IMPORTER opens and runs for a LONG TIME to open the 1-2 hour movie/file.  I can then select the VOB file and click GET MEDIA which is another long wait for it to copy.  The copied file is the complete VOB file and I only wanted one act (a 2-3 minute segment).
Again, what I want to do is, VIEW/SEARCH THE DVD,  FIND THE ACT I'M LOOKING FOR  AND CREATE AN 'IN' AND 'OUT' POINT TO EXTRACT/COPY/EXPORT THE WANTED  ACT INSTEAD OF THE COMPLETE MOVIE/PROJECT.
CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH THIS?
    Tom Mullica
    [email protected]

I don't think this is possible with any version of Premiere... setting in/out during capture is only possible with DV or HDV via Firewire from a tape camera
For VOB from a DVD you must import the entire file (VOB's are maximum .99Gig per file, due to the DVD structure) and then once you have the file imported into Premiere, you may set in/out points for further use

  • Mac G4 won't read finalized DVD-r

I need to view/edit a finalized DVD-r on my Mac G4. The problem is when I place the DVD-r in the G4 cd/dvd drive the system ejects the DVD-r. So for whatever reason the G4 running os 9.2.2 won't mount the DVD-r on the desktop.
The cd/dvd drive will read all other cd's (audio) or dvd's
    (movie's).
The DVD-r was created on a stand alone DVD recorder and is original content.
    Any ideas??

When the dvd-r is finalized on the Samsung dvd Recorder the mode is automatically set to video - so that it should be playable on any dvd player. Samsung Tech support said to try the finalized dvd-r on a PC since the dvd-r played/viewable on two stand alone dvd players.
At this point I don't know what to do! The dvd player on the mac ejects the dvd-r almost as soon as the door closed.

  • Final Output & DVD Question

    Hey Everyone,
I recently completed a short film and exported to Quicktime at the highest level and the film looks fantastic.
When I sent it to Compressor at the best quality I could get and outputted to DVD, it still looks good, but if I get close enough to the screen I can see some very minor lines around the edge of things (like an actors head or a closeup of a piece of paper, etc). Is this normal with compression rates on a DVD? Should the image be as crisp as the QT .mov file? Is there a way to make it crisp?
After briefly reviewing a film I own DVD, I am thinking it is normal, but I wanted to make sure. I am getting ready for the film festival submissions...and may be using a DVD to screen off of in certain festivals.
Since I shot with the Canon HV-40 in 24p mode and captured the settings at 23.98, I wasn't sure if deinterlacing would be beneficial or not.
    Look forward to your thoughts/knowledge.

    Hi Ben,
I did not edit with a real production monitor (I plan to get one in the future) I edited on a the 27 inch IMAC. My TV is not HDTV either, but is 16:9 frame. '
When I was in Compressor preview mode, I even noticed these flaws there. It sounds like this is most likely the norm when it comes to this. Is that correct?
Also, I spoke with Apple yesterday and they told me to just export by sharing from Final Cut Pro directly versus using Compressor and to use Dual Layer DVD's. Not sure if that made much of a difference or not.

  • HDV to Blu-Ray and DVD questions!

So I shot a bunch of footage that I need to turn into a DVD and Blu-Ray. I have some questions regarding these 2 issues.
First of all, I captured all the footage HDV settings 1440 x 1080. I am using Final Cut Pro 5. I am having some issues with the footage trying to multicam edit. It's making me render it out, which takes about 8 hours for 20 minutes.
What is the best way to go from HDV back to DV so I can put it on DVD? Can I export straight from the HDV footage to mpeg2 or is there a different way I should go about it?
My next question is. For Blu-Ray video, how do I export the HDV footage in FCP so I can use it in Adobe Encore? Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The easiest way to convert HDV to DV is to use the camera or deck to do this Down Convert.
Edit and export to Compressor for DVD.
Multiclip editing is not something I can help you with as I haven't had any success with it.
For Encore you could export as a self contained .mov then import into Encore. You might want to try working with Compressor first.
    Good Luck

  • HD to SD final output question

    Hello Forum,
I have just completed Jeff Bellune’s excellent HD to SD tutorial called “hd2sd - High Quality Scaling From HD to SD”. For weeks I have been trying in vain to downscale my 1920 x1080i AVI-8bit YUV HD footage for output to PAL DVD without much luck, resulting in terrible output quality, but for anyone experiencing the same problem I would like to let you know that the quality of the conversion with Jeff's method is absolutely amazing. http://bellunevideo.com/tutlist.php Thanks for the post Jeff you are a star!
But I have one small problem. In the final process when using VirtualDub to open your AviSynth script file and then saving it out to a Lagarith AVI file.
The process works as described with great results however the final output file is exported at an output size of 720x576 - 1.250 (5:4) aspect ratio. (Size data extracted from GSpot) The problem is when I import this into Encore the footage does not fill the whole screen.
My to the forum question is does anyone know how I can change the output file size in VirtualDub to a (16.9) aspect ratio so that when imported into Encore the footage takes up the whole screen in a (16:9) widescreen format.
Can VirtualDub be used to do this and if so does anyone know the exact settings to be used?
Any assistance with this will help me greatly.
    Thanks in advance.
    Rex.

    Thank you Jeff
You are a brilliant person, thank you very much as you solved my long standing and draining problem in one answer!
The output result is second to none as a matter of fact I can’t even tell the difference from the original footage!
Everything is fine now but while the Big man himself is about I wonder if you could possibly answer these 3 questions?
    1) I am using Premiere CS5.5, Should I have used the Maximum render quality setting when exporting my MPEG2 file from premiere (this wasn’t mentioned in the CS4 tutorial)
2).My original source footage used in my test project is 1920 X1080i (1.0) 50Hz Pal - and I have exported 3 versions, one Lower field first, one upper field first and one Progressive no fields. Using the Interpret Footage techniques from your advice I created 3 separate Encore projects in each field setting the thing is I can’t tell the difference between them in my test DVDs. (Q. which field setting do you recommend me use for my final project output to Pal DVD (Note Encore Pal Project settings make reference to Lower field first).
    2) Could I re-import the exported VirtualDub avi file back into premiere. Then edit my project adding effects and titles and when the project is complete export the finished project into Encore either by uncompressed AVI or MPEG2-DVD?. If this is possible will I lose much quality on export? And would you know how I could Interpret the Footage to PAL Widescreen (1.4587).in premiere? (I ask this as it would be much easier to edit with these smaller files as my original files are very resource consuming)
Again I would be most grateful if you have some advice on these questions as I am a newbie to HD editing but embracing the challenge.
    Thanks again.
    Rex.

  • DVD question

My friend gave me a "vacation" DVD that was created in Australia. When I play it on my mac, it looks great. When I play it on my DVD player, its black and white and corrupted. Is this a PAL vs NTSC issue?
My second question is how do I create a quicktime file of the DVD so that I can bring it into Final Cut?
    THanks!

Non protected DVD's don't need to be ripped at all with MTR , you can drag the VIDEO_TS file to the desktop then open it in MPEG Streamclip (free, but to edit MPEG 2 you need Apple's MPEG-2 component which is not) and cut/trim it there. Dragging is much faster as well. And there is no need to buy Cinematize pro either.
MTR for non-protected DVD's as this is, is useful if you do want a particular title , chapter or title and range of chapters on the DVD. Play it to find out what part you want then use the Title/chapter setting to make a new VIDEO_TS folder of that selected portion.
MPEG Streamclip is superior video export quality to Handbrake by a factor of 10.
You can also change the frame rate if you want to convert PAL to NTSC - I have found at times files that are 25 fps (PAL) that I want to put on DVD in Toast. I convert them using MPEG STreamclip to the 29.97 FPS so Toast doesn't have a conniption when it sees a mix of 25 and 30 fps source files.
For a free application it is the most versatile video editing/converting toolkit that exists.

  • Many iMovie to DVD Questions

OK, guys, I'm in over my head here.
Working on the 3-night project shot last week. Will be making DVDs out of this project. Shot with HV30 in 30P mode, last night in Cine, too. Film noise/grain PLUS not best audio first 2 nights because shooting from too far away & bad lighting.
    1. For making DVDs, is it best to use iMovie HD6, 08, 09 (bought, but not installed yet), (or even FCE4-no experience with this at all, but have access)?
    2. Every time I've used iMovie HD6 or 08 in the past, when it gets to iDVD 08 it turns my Widescreen footage to Standard (I'm playing it on a Standard TV & want letterboxing) although it's Widescreen when testing iDVD project before burning. How do I keep it Widescreen??? This has been driving me crazy for awhile.
    3. As for sound, I tried boosting in iMovie HD 6 and it didn't sound that great. In iMovie 08, I remember you can boost up to 200% and normalize. Does that turn out better and is it worth the tradeoff if the final product (DVD) doesn't have as good picture quality as HD 6? For last 2 nights, I also recorded audio on a digital voice recorder. Is it worth it ( and HOW TO do it, no clapboard used) to try to use this audio in conjunction with the video shot and not the audio from the camcorder?
    4. Also, is tonight the time to upgrade and install 09? Or is it going to mess me up too much mid-project and DVD quality not as good and I should wait?
    5. Any plug-ins to reduce film noise/grain?
    6. Finally, what settings in iMovie 08 & 09 are best for exporting when final product is DVD? Been very confused with the Apple Forums discussion boards threads on "deinterlacing is not deinterlacing."
Phew! Sorry for so many questions. Anxiously awaiting the new iMovie 09: The Missing Manual!
    Thanks, Deborah
PS crossposting in both iMovie HD 6 AND iMovie 09 Forums.

    Hi
+1. For making DVDs, is it best to use iMovie HD6, 08, 09 (bought, but not installed yet), (or even FCE4-no experience with this at all, but have access)?+
For doing a DVD I would only use iMovie HD 6 or FinalCut any version.
If You are not use to FinalCut this can be a *big step up in learning* but when done
    very revarding.
+2. This has been driving me crazy for awhile.+
Not sure but I would make a WideScreeen project in iMovie HD 6 and when done close
iMovie open iDVD and select a 16x9 project then import the iMovie movie project into iDVD (icon with a Star on it)
(I never use the "Share(Export to iDVD" function in iMovie
One can force Letterboxing by starting a 4x3DV project, then import a still photo that
locks it to this. Now import Your 16x9 video and it will be forced into letterboxed 4x3.
Burning this as a 4x3 DVD should keep it letterboxed.
+3. Is it worth it ( and HOW TO do it, no clapboard used) to try to use this audio in conjunction with the video shot and not the audio from the camcorder?+
    To increase audio volume -
    • Select video clip
    • Goto Advance then down to Extract Audio
    • Increase this to 150%
    • Select original video clip and restore audio to 150% too
    Now You got 300%
If You need more then copy the audio clip and paste it ontop of itself as many time as needed
Quality. Increasing = more audio problems.
alt. is to export out audio (as QT .aiff) and adjust it in an another program as
"Audacity" (free) or in SoundSoap™ if You got ayn this (or by all means use GarageBand)
    Sync.
To sync external audio recorders - Tough often near impossibly. The device has
to have a TimeCode to be able to keep sync. There are no easy solution as I know of.
+4. Also, is tonight the time to upgrade and install 09? Or is it going to mess me up too much mid-project and DVD quality not as good and I should wait?+
I would not - neither iMovie'08 or 09 will work optimal if You want a DVD as result.
I NEVER change anything Mid-project (Mac OS, QuickTime or program version)
    +5. Any plug-ins to reduce film noise/grain?+
Don't think so but by exporting out or using FinalCut there are good tools in
QuickTime, GarageBand, Audacity, SoundSoap and FinalCut
    Take a look into
    Stupendous software http://www.stupendous-software.com
    GeeThree http://www.geethree.com

    Apple http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/ezediapluginsforimovievol1.html

+6. Finally, what settings in iMovie 08 & 09 are best for exporting when final product is DVD? Been very confused with the Apple Forums discussion boards threads on "deinterlacing is not deinterlacing."+
DE-interlacing is not the problem - It is that both 08 and 09 delete every second line
when going to iDVD. Sharpness is degraded. iMovie HD or FinalCut doesn't do so but
    let You have full quality.

  • Slideshow on a DVD questions

    Hi...
2 questions about the adding a slideshow to a DVD using iDVD 08. Are you only able to allow one type of transition for the slideshow? I really would like to have an option where it randomly switches between types of transitions. Seeing the same transition for hundreds of photos is boring to me. Also, I chose the page turn transition to test out the slideshow on a DVD and it seems that right before it turns the page the picture goes blurry. Has anyone else noticed this? Please tell me there is a fix for this... and also a way to do multiple transitions on a finished DVD slideshow.
    Thanks!!

+right before it turns the page the picture goes blurry+
I have the same issue, and it happens with several different transition types (I tried dissolve, page turn, and cube and they all had the problem...) To me it looks like a glitch in the rendering process as it happens right before every transition starts, and the last picture of each slideshow (which has no subsequent transition) has no blur. Sadly, I have this problem with iDVD 6.0.3 and I was hoping that upgrading to iLife 08 might bring a fix.
I did notice, that the problem is most evident on my HD tv with a Panasonic DMR-EH75V DVD player. On my Macbook the problem is still unacceptably noticable, but not quite as bad. On a G3-powered slot loading iMac, the picture blur is nearly imperceptable. Finally on my old standard TV with a Samsung DVD-V1000 there is no hint of the blur problem.
It may be that changing settings on the DVD player can reduce or eliminate the blur, but for me that is not really an acceptable solution because I am creating a Wedding DVD for some clients and I have no idea what kind of hardware they will end up playing it back on.

I am still pretty new to a mac. I produced a photo DVD with music and fades on my PC. I burned it to a DVD and it will play in any dvd player and i can watch it on my mac. Here is my question. Can i use final cut express to rip in the slide show i created so i can save it and post it on the web? if final cut express can't do this.. what is the program of choice. (none of the pictures or music are copywright protected)

look into either DVDxDV or MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD's VOB files into DV.
DVDxDV is a standalone app but costs. MPEG Streamclip is free requires you to have Apple's mpeg plugin installed.

  • HDV from final cut to final DVD

Hello everyone. My questions today refer to compression in FCP.
    1. I was wondering what the best way to get HDV footage out of FCP to a finished DVD with the least
    possible amount of aliasing?
    2. Next, what's the best route to take compressing or HDV from FCP to final product on DVD?
    Here are a few details
    1. The camera I'm using is the JVC GY-HD110
    2. Editing with FCP Studio
    3. The video is approximately 45 minutes in length
    3. I have exported the video using Q.T. Movie to the desktop then dropped the FCP Q.T. Movie file to
compressor using the Codec DVD Best Quality 90 minutes at 16:9.
Is compressor the best software for this process or are there any other recommendations?
    THANKS
    Erv

    1. No difference, really; you only need the in and out points on the timeline if you're not exporting the entire sequence. As a matter of fact, if the timeline window is just made active, and nothing is selected, you can then go to File/Export Using Compressor, and it will work with the entire timeline sequence, whether you have it selected in the browser or not.
    2. No way to completely eliminate it, since you're going from HDV to SD. I did read an article where the author suggested changing the field dominance from upper to lower in Compressor's Video Format tab to reduce aliasing/motion displacement. (HDV defaults to upper dominance, while DV defaults to lower). I tried it, and got terrible results, so I went back to leaving it at upper.
You could try this if you want to, though; the article is here:

  • HDCAM project to a SD DVD question

    HI
I have an 11 minute movie in HDCAM format and I'm trying to make DVD's of it. My question is....does anyone know the best way to make a DVD of this to get the best possible looking image? I mean I spent money I dont have to have it in the nice HDCAM quality ,how can I keep that look when making a DVD?
Also I only have SD burning capablities.
Will I have to downconvert my movie first to an SD format?
Thank you for taking the time to help me out.
    Chris

    yes thank you for asking.
I'm working with Final Cut Studio.
Turnaround is a good question. As soon as possible is my best answer.
I've burned one sample so far by making a quicktime reference movie from my onlined HD res FCP project. Importing into DVDSP as 16x9 one pass 7.4 bitrate enconding.
It looks OK, a little too grainy/noisy for my liking. Especially one shot that stands out from the rest of the film as being REALLY grainy.
    Thanks for helping out!
