HDCAM project to a SD DVD question

HI
I have an 11 minute movie in HDCAM format and I'm trying to make DVD's of it. My question is....does anyone know the best way to make a DVD of this to get the best possible looking image? I mean I spent money I dont have to have it in the nice HDCAM quality ,how can I keep that look when making a DVD?
Also I only have SD burning capablities.
Will I have to downconvert my movie first to an SD format?
Thank you for taking the time to help me out.
Chris

yes thank you for asking.
I'm working with Final Cut Studio.
Turnaround is a good question. As soon as possible is my best answer.
I've burned one sample so far by making a quicktime reference movie from my onlined HD res FCP project. Importing into DVDSP as 16x9 one pass 7.4 bitrate enconding.
It looks OK, a little too grainy/noisy for my liking. Especially one shot that stands out from the rest of the film as being REALLY grainy.
Thanks for helping out!

  • Opening projects that have a DVD menu.

I am unable to re-open projects that contain a DVD menu after I have correctly closed the project. Specifically, I have a series of MPEG videos (saved by Premiere Elements). They all open fine and run welel individually and collectively. I then put a DVD menu in with all the Chapter and Scene menu markers and then saved it and closed the project to come back to it at a later time. When I re-open I get the error "Sorry, a serious error has occured that requires Adobe Premiere elements to shut down . . ." and the whole program closes.
I have tried this twice with different videos and get the same result. I have never before tried to include a DVD menu in a Premiere 9 project. I have Windwos 7, 32 bit, plenty of memory and disc space, I have tried two different disc drives(both NTFS format) and reinstalled Premiere. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately, you have posted to the Tips & Tricks sub-forum, which is a repository for articles on how to do specific things in Premiere. Few general users stop by here, so there will be few, if any, "eyes" on your issue. Maybe our tireless MOD, Steve Grisetti, can move this out to the main forum, where many more users will see your post.
I do not recall anyone else having issues with Opening any Projects, with DVD/BD Menus and navigation. The addition of those elements should not affect the ability to Open such Projects, but in your case, they do. I cannot imagine what is happening to cause those Projects to fail to Open, but maybe others will have similar experiences, and can offer some help. If the post can be moved to the main forum, it stands a greater chance that those users will see it, and can help.
    Good luck,

  • How do I transfer a Pre8 Project in to Sony DVD Architect

Pre8 is just dissapointing. I have not had any luck with this product especially regarding menu creation. In order to creat a better menu I would like to transfer my project in to Sony DVD Architect. Can anyone give me some advice on how to do this?
    Thanks,
    Nick

I do agree. They have one of the best authoring programs, that I have ever used. I do not know what their sales numbers were, when it was a stand-alone, up through EncoreDVD 2.0, but even if they had to do two, slightly different versions, I'd love to see them put it for sale alone.
Going back to EncoreDVD 2.0 (my version), there were basically two versions, or at least variations on it. If one bought is separate, there was no Adobe Dynamic Link. If one bought it as part of the Production Studio (as I did), one got Dynamic Link between it and PrPro. Now, with CS3, Adobe Dynamic Link has been improved, and with CS4, there's more improvement and strengthening. Maybe trying to separate out a version with Dynamic Link and one without, would be too much coding now. Or, it could just be a lack of sales. IIRC, it was about US$300 for the stand-alone. Maybe there was just no market for it, regardless of how good it was. I'm just glad that Adobe did not kill it off, and continues to keep it in the suites for PrPro. However, I love my EncoreDVD 2.0 so much, that I would never give it up. Now, when I move to BD production, I will either need to upgrade to CS4, or CS5, and get the newer version of Encore for that.

  • Quick dvd question

Somebody wants me to make a dvd with a project where you can play the 3 minute video or go to a chapter where you can play it and have it loop is that possible to have the same on one dvd or do you have to have a looping dvd and then the project just on another dvd if you understand what I am saying.
    thanks

    Hi:
You can do it in the same DVD without duplicating the track, using Stories. Read this Stories Tutorial (from www.kenstone.net).
You can use the original track setting the End Jump to the Menu, and one Story based in the same track but set the End Jump to itself, then it will loop.
You can build your Mani Menu with 2 buttons: one for the single play and another for the looped Story.
Remember setting the MEnu Button feature for your disc to the Main Menu. Then to escape from the loop you can press the Menu button of the remote control.
You'll find several threads with a similar subject in the DVDSP fprum.
    Hope that helps !

  • Mp4 to DVD question...

    Hi everyone,
So I recently filmed a show in 1920x1080, 17mbps, in AVCHD. Now i need to burn the show to a DVD so it will play in most household DVD players.
Am I right in doing the following...
    - Render the project out as Mpeg2 DVD in either Prem pro cs6 or Media Encoder
    - Burn the project to a DVD with Encore?
I have production premium cs6 package.
I am currently rendering out the project in Media Encoder, am I doing this right? I realise I will lose some quality but that is a result of filming in HD and then using the footage for a standard def DVD. I hope I don't lose much of the quality. I have my render settings to high.
    Any feedback would be great.
    Thanks

DVD is only about 25 of that resolution, roughly 500x800 pixels. You're throwing away tons of picture information during the encoding process. With tons of experience, you wil lbe able to make subtle adjustments to the encoder to optimize every scene but paying for this skill is rarely justified outside of the feature business. Transocding like this is an uncomfortable compromise. The big issues are lost detail and inappropriately sized graphics and text; stuff that looked great 1,000 pixesl high can look like mud when it's only 400 pixels tall.
I handle HD-to-standard conversions this way:
I bring the HD version of the movie into my video editor. The timeline is set for standard definition. I scale the HD clip to fit in the new comp. This uses the video editor's scaling operation rather than the encoder's. I render out a squeezed movie and take that to the DVD encoder. The encoder wants an SD file to come out the back end so I instruct the encoder to produce a movie that is squeezed, a movie that will be stretched out during playback to fill the 16x9 tv set.

  • Best way to make a SD DVD from an HDCAM project?

    Hi,
I have a short film in FCP at HDCAM resolution that I want to make a SD DVD of. I want it to look as GOOD as possible. Got any tips on best way to do it? I'm familiar with DVDSP and Compresor/
I'd like to keep its aspect ratio the same and the sound mix the same as how it is in the HDCAM master
    Thanks!

    Generally
Edit in HD and either export self contained uncompressed or send timeline to Compressor to SD m2v settings (16:9) and make audio AC3. Some frame control modifications can also help.

  • Many iMovie to DVD Questions

OK, guys, I'm in over my head here.
Working on the 3-night project shot last week. Will be making DVDs out of this project. Shot with HV30 in 30P mode, last night in Cine, too. Film noise/grain PLUS not best audio first 2 nights because shooting from too far away & bad lighting.
    1. For making DVDs, is it best to use iMovie HD6, 08, 09 (bought, but not installed yet), (or even FCE4-no experience with this at all, but have access)?
    2. Every time I've used iMovie HD6 or 08 in the past, when it gets to iDVD 08 it turns my Widescreen footage to Standard (I'm playing it on a Standard TV & want letterboxing) although it's Widescreen when testing iDVD project before burning. How do I keep it Widescreen??? This has been driving me crazy for awhile.
    3. As for sound, I tried boosting in iMovie HD 6 and it didn't sound that great. In iMovie 08, I remember you can boost up to 200% and normalize. Does that turn out better and is it worth the tradeoff if the final product (DVD) doesn't have as good picture quality as HD 6? For last 2 nights, I also recorded audio on a digital voice recorder. Is it worth it ( and HOW TO do it, no clapboard used) to try to use this audio in conjunction with the video shot and not the audio from the camcorder?
    4. Also, is tonight the time to upgrade and install 09? Or is it going to mess me up too much mid-project and DVD quality not as good and I should wait?
    5. Any plug-ins to reduce film noise/grain?
    6. Finally, what settings in iMovie 08 & 09 are best for exporting when final product is DVD? Been very confused with the Apple Forums discussion boards threads on "deinterlacing is not deinterlacing."
Phew! Sorry for so many questions. Anxiously awaiting the new iMovie 09: The Missing Manual!
    Thanks, Deborah
PS crossposting in both iMovie HD 6 AND iMovie 09 Forums.

+1. For making DVDs, is it best to use iMovie HD6, 08, 09 (bought, but not installed yet), (or even FCE4-no experience with this at all, but have access)?+
For doing a DVD I would only use iMovie HD 6 or FinalCut any version.
If You are not use to FinalCut this can be a *big step up in learning* but when done
    very revarding.
+2. This has been driving me crazy for awhile.+
Not sure but I would make a WideScreeen project in iMovie HD 6 and when done close
iMovie open iDVD and select a 16x9 project then import the iMovie movie project into iDVD (icon with a Star on it)
(I never use the "Share(Export to iDVD" function in iMovie
One can force Letterboxing by starting a 4x3DV project, then import a still photo that
locks it to this. Now import Your 16x9 video and it will be forced into letterboxed 4x3.
Burning this as a 4x3 DVD should keep it letterboxed.
+3. To increase audio volume -
    • Select video clip
    • Goto Advance then down to Extract Audio
    • Increase this to 150%
    • Select original video clip and restore audio to 150% too
    Now You got 300%
If You need more then copy the audio clip and paste it ontop of itself as many time as needed
Quality. Increasing = more audio problems.
alt. is to export out audio (as QT .aiff) and adjust it in an another program as
"Audacity" (free) or in SoundSoap™ if You got ayn this (or by all means use GarageBand)
    Sync.
To sync external audio recorders - Tough often near impossibly. The device has
to have a TimeCode to be able to keep sync. There are no easy solution as I know of.
+4. Also, is tonight the time to upgrade and install 09? Or is it going to mess me up too much mid-project and DVD quality not as good and I should wait?+
I would not - neither iMovie'08 or 09 will work optimal if You want a DVD as result.
I NEVER change anything Mid-project (Mac OS, QuickTime or program version)
    +5. Any plug-ins to reduce film noise/grain?+
Don't think so but by exporting out or using FinalCut there are good tools in
QuickTime, GarageBand, Audacity, SoundSoap and FinalCut

DE-interlacing is not the problem - It is that both 08 and 09 delete every second line
when going to iDVD. Sharpness is degraded. iMovie HD or FinalCut doesn't do so but
    let You have full quality.

  • Exporting HD project for use in DVD SP

    Hi Guys,
Very glad I found this forum as I am just out of ideas to get this working. Here is the situation:
I have a project of a wedding in HDV, which contains 3 sequences with the following lengths:
    The Service = 45mins
    Photoshoot = 5mins
    Reception = 80mins
I have decided I would like to have the Service + photoshoot on ONE DVD and the reception on ONE DVD. If possible? If not possible I will have the reception spread over two but i do not see the need.
First of all I have a Powermac dual 1.8 which doesn't have a dual layer dvd burner, so to have a higher quality result and to be able to fit more on I have decided I probably best to get a Dual Layer burner to do this project.
But before I do that, I need to work out what is the best settings for exporting this project out of FCP 5.1 to work on a SD DVD? Do I use compressor? If so which preset or what settings of my own? I have tried various things and I honestly get lost and my project in DVD SP is around 12GB. So i try exporting again with other ways in compressor and then the quality just looks terrible.
The FCP project is all in HDV with apple intermediate codec so I would be exporting from that, but obviously only need the DVD in SD!
If it helps converting the HD project to SD/DV I can do that with the sequence which I did try and then some more export experimenting but it looked really bad.
Please help guys I am desperate and no idea on what to do here.
I really appreciate your time, feel free to ask me anything to help you determine what I should do.
    Thank you so much.

  • MPEG2-DVD question

I have a premiere CS5 project with HD 1920x1080p 24fps.  I have (2) 45 minute timelines and I am using Encore to author my DVD.
Please help me understand the best way to approach this.
My first thought was to import both premiere timelines into encore and create the dvd.  The resulting project was about 6GB so I used a Dual Layer DVD-9 for the burn.
From reading comments here, I got the impression that exporting from Premiere and creating MPEG2-DVD files might be a better option for better quality.   I did this using Match Source Attributes and created two export files which I then brought into a new Encore project.  The resulting project totals about 4GB.
Did I do this right?   If this seems right, is the quality going to be the same using the second method?   If the second method is good, I would be happy as I would be able to use less expensive single layer DVDs vs dual layer DVDs.
Please let me know the best way to approch this.
    Thanks
    Ted

    Ted,
Glad you're asking these questions because they are exactly what I want to know too.
I have been importing sequences from Pr, then using the Progressive Hi Q 7Mb VBR 2-pass preset, which looked to be the highest quality preset.
However, after a series of problems (associated with multiple sequences in the one timeline), I re-coded using the Automatic preset.
I compared DVDs produced by the two presets on a high quality player.
I couldn't spot any differences in colour, contrast, brightness, etc, but I could see that when objects moved, the Automatic gave clearer motion! ie, less edge artifacts (can't remember the correct term).
This surprised me because I always thought a 2-pass encode was superior to a 1-pass one.
So, until I find out more about encoding, I'll stick to the Automatic preset for projects I encode in Encore.
Might try encoding in Premiere Pro  -  as Ann suggests.
Nevertheless, i'd be interested in your findings.
    Thanks
    Erik

  • Moving and burning from Project Library to a dvd

I moved a file in Project Library to a blank dvd and then burned it. It replayed satisfactorily once and the second try gave a message: "A necessary data reference could not be resolved." What's going on with this? MAC OSX 10.6 and iMOVIE 09.

Duh.  Thank you kindly Neil.  I sometimes forget about the old 'right click - reveal in finder'.  So strange.  I've used it a thousand times this year in FCP (a particularly complicated film built from countless stills).  Never ever entered my brain to use it with Soundtrack Pro.  Ever.  And I must have exported soundFX out of STP hundreds of times over the last couple of years ... never thinking to ask the right question.
    Very much appreciated N.,

  • HDCAM shoot to SD PAL DVD...

    Morning All
Its a six minute promo shot HDCAM 1080i50 and edited Uncompressed HD 8-bit. One of the deliverables is an SD PAL DVD. We normally send DVCAM masters out to a facilty to encode and author...
    Two questions:
    - Should I do the encode in-house this time and just send the .m2v and .ac3 files?
    - If I go the tape route how do I maintain the most image quality? Do I get the Blackmagic to downres or FCP?
    Thanks for your help...
    Tall Jim

is sending them an HDCAM master not an option? failing that I'd send a DigiBeta dub using the HDCAM deck to do the downconvert

  • Managing project to fit on DVD

I am new to FCEHD and have been working my way through Tom Wolsky's book. Question: I got carried away and imported and edited a project that has entirely too much content to fit on a DVD. Ultimately, I would like to make three separate DVDs (one for Halloween material, one for Thanksgiving, etc). Now that I've imported all the material and have edited it, what do I do to parse the relevant sections out so I can export to iDVD to eventually burn to a DVD. Sorry for any confussion in the question; it is difficult to articulate.

    Roland
You can fit up to two hours of FCE timeline using iDVD.
Add chapter markers to segment it or export different movies from the timeline. The choice is yours.

  • How to burn project directly to finalized DVD

    Hi All -
Sorry for what may be a dumb question, but i'm new at DVDSP and i'm having a problem burning my project. I have it finalized and ready to burn, but when I click on build/format, it only allows me to burn to my hard drive, and doesn't give me the option of burning to a disc. Can anyone please help a newbie out

this is where i get stuck. my pull-down tab only has hard drive as an option. My dvd drive is not listed. I know I can burn DVDs because I've built and created projects in iDVD on the same computer.

  • How do I include the photos in a imovie project to the finished dvd so the users can have access to them?

I've included alot of old photos in an iMovie project and would like to include them on the finished DVD I create with iDVD. I woud like the users to be able to have access to them so they can print them, store them on their own computer or whatever they would like to do. How would I do this?

You do this by creating a DVD-ROM section on your DVD. See this explanation from iDVD Help.
Adding files to the DVD-ROM portion of a disc
You can let viewers copy files directly from your DVD by adding the files to the DVD-ROM portion of the disc. These files are burned onto the DVD and are accessible when the disc is viewed on either a Windows PC or a Macintosh computer, but not a DVD player.
You can add any kind of file to the disc. For example, if your disc contains a slideshow, you can add the image files to the DVD-ROM portion of the disc so viewers can download them to their own computers and print them. You can also add a file containing your movie production notes and other “extras.”
To manually add files to the DVD-ROM part of your disc:
Choose Advanced > Edit DVD-ROM Contents.
    The DVD-ROM Contents window opens.
Click Add Files, or click New Folder first if you want to create a folder to put the files in.
Browse to select your files or folders, then click Open to add them to the disc.
You can also drag files directly to the DVD-ROM Contents window. When you are done, just close the window.
When you add a file to the DVD-ROM portion of your disc, before you burn the disc the project contains just a reference to the location of the file on your hard disk, not the actual file. So if you delete a file from your computer or move it from its location after adding it to the DVD-ROM contents, you get a “File not found” message when you try to burn your disc. You can either remove these missing files from the DVD-ROM contents or find them on your computer and put them back in the original location so iDVD can access them.
As you add files to the DVD-ROM contents, be sure to check the DVD Capacity meter in the Project Info window to find out how many gigabytes of disc space are being used. The Capacity meter shows the disc space taken up by the video portion of the disc as well as the DVD-ROM portion.
