Final Purchasing Decision Assistance Requested

Greetings. I had difficulty finding the appropriate section to post this, so I hope I am not out of bounds, posting here.
I am in need of some serious pre-purchasing advice and hope that some of you can help me reach a rock-solid decision.
Here is my dilemma. My current G5 system is outlined below. I was going to purchase an 8-core Mac Pro, but decided that was overkill. The Quad-core, I have determined, is more than sufficient for my needs. Now I am considering downgrading, even further to a maxxed-out 24” iMac.
First, permit me to list my main uses of my machine, beyond the ordinary, everyday tasks. I do a bit of work in Photoshop CS3. I just purchased a Sony HD camcorder, so I will be upgrading my copy of FCE2 to FCE4. I am running an Internet radio station, so I utilize a program called MegaSeg, used in conjunction with Nicecast and M-Audio Firewire Solo. That’s just about it.
So, here are my questions. If I get the iMac, I will be limited to 4GB of RAM (due to the cost of the 8GB upgrade), will have the Radeon HD 4850, as opposed to the HD 4870 in the Pro, but will have a slightly faster processor. Additionally, the iMac will allow me to keep my 30” HD Cinema display, which would be great when running the station and working in PS or FCE, but will the HD 4850 card be up to the challenge of driving both monitors effectively?
By going to the Quad-core Mac Pro, I can get up to 8GB of RAM, the better video card and of course, much greater expandability in the future. I plan to keep this machine at least 3 years, for certain and hopefully, longer. The down-side, using only the 30” monitor (yes, I know - poor, poor pitiful me).
One major concern is noise. My G5 is without a doubt the loudest computer I have ever owned. During the slightest task the fans kick into overdrive and it sounds like a helicopter is landing on my desk. When I record in Garage Band, you can hear the fans in the background. Yes, I realize I could put the box on the floor, under my desk, but that seems sacrilegious. lol. I have not heard any complaints about noise with the new machines, so I’m hoping that is not an issue. Any experiences to the contrary, I would appreciate hearing about.
The bottom line is this: $3400 for the Mac Pro vs. $2600 for the iMac, configured the way I would like them.
I fully understand that this is a personal decision, but I have always received sound, intelligent input on these forums and would appreciate any feedback anyone might wish to offer.
Thanking you in advance for your assistance and my apologies if I have posted in the wrong forum.
Cheers,
Frank

*Unimpressive? you can add the ATI 4870.*
Valid point.
*HD? I always get the smallest, and replace it (use as a backup clone). 1TB drives are $99-139.*
Well, on OWC under Digilloyd's specials, which is referenced in the "Mac Performance" link you provided, (of which I read every word of), they range from $130 to $170.
*You say you won't/can't buy 3rd party RAM and hard drives, which are CIP/DIY, and also want to cut price. These are MEANT to be upgraded! by the end user. And look at photos. Easy and made for 5 yr old to do.*
Well, I would and I can - but I'm not a DIY kinda guy and in my world, whatever can go wrong will. I'm more of a unpack, plug-in and start using kinda person.
It is almost impossible to figure out how much I would actually save by doing it myself, but if could save me $500, I could spring for the internal Blu-ray player I have been drooling over. That would fit nicely with my new HD camcorder and allow me to play through my Sony LCD-TV. I guess it's time to sit down with a spread sheet and figure out what I would actually save. Your points are ALL valid.
Well, it is a workstation.
*That is why the Mac Performance link is in there, well written and "english." (I too use to get headaches reading specs, just like when I learned 3-dimension geometry 45 yrs ago.*
Excellent piece that every Mac user should read. Simple to understand. No "geek-speak."
*If you look at MacRumors forums, some people are more than happy with 2008 and even prefer it to the new model*.
I will do so.
*I just don't want you saying you can only upgrade to 8GB RAM when you can, and then say "but I don't do that kind of thing (hire the local Mac kid from high school).*
Understood.
*Can't be louder than a fan. Is that a requirement, or "oh, good, I can live with that" because if you want silence, then you can't use a computer, and you would need to invest more into silent SSD hard drives.*
I don't expect silence, but I also don't expect the sound of gale-force winds. lol. You have to hear this machine to believe it. It's ludicrous.
*Personally, I prefer the Specials over even new. Tested, reliable, and often come better than spec shown.*
lol. Well as hard as you have tried to help - now I;m more confused than ever. I will have to take a long hard look at configuring my own machine.
I appreciate your kindness, very much. - Frank

  • Purchase Decision

    I am in the throes of making a purchase decision to upgrade my hardware from a G3-266 beige desktop to an Intel Mac. I am perfectly happy with my machine but the world around me is advancing, and it is approaching the end of its useful life. I hope with this post some of you may help me make my final decision.
    Money is definitely a factor, otherwise I would have no questions. I have a budget of about $1,000 US and have narrowed down some options. First I will explain my needs, then the considerations I have made, then my questions which may be evident if you follow my train of thought.
    My bread and butter work is home office desktop publishing on my machine running OS 9.2.2. I use InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and MS Word. Gaming is not a priority but I do enjoy Flight Sims such as F/A18 Korea and Warbirds. I do some web design as well with Dreamweaver, but I don't believe this factors in.
    The purpose of my upgrade is multifold. I can not upgrade my software, I fear my machine may collapse after having seen a couple of Bondi iMacs go kablooey recently, and I do lots of web research and writing which the OS9 does not support very well. I eschewed installing OSX when it first came out and trying it and finding it buggy, slow and the ability to use Classic not exactly what was promised. I recently installed 10.2.8 and found it to be a rich experience, sluggish but adequate for the web work I do. I don't use Classic, but instead boot into OS9 for the publishing.
    I believe a Mini will do everything I need and I will wait until the Universal versions of the Adobe Suite is released before I fully migrate. An iMac will do the job as well, and so will a MacBook.
    I know I won't be able to use Classsic at all. I guess my biggest concerns are: will I be backing myself into a corner because of a lack of internal expandability, and will the graphics configurations (intel gma 950) noticeably affect rendering in the publishing programs. If there is one complaint about my current system is that I did not get another video card and instead just upgraded the VRAM. I notice some posts online about the graphics capability related to gaming and I would prefer my new machine to be able to handle the flight sims I like.
    If I get a Mini, I'll probably get an LCD monitor. Will the low-to-mid range provide me with accurate colour rendition for publishing (mind you, I don't use high-end CRT now and haven't found a problem, but I don't really do much high-end colour work either). I trust the the iMac monitor is a good device for the colour.
    The iMac has features I don't want, namely the camera, but otherwise an acceptable choice.
    If I should choose a portable, it would be the low-end MacBook as well and would use a second monitor for the square footage I need to work with multiple documents. Will it support a 19-inch millions of colours at optimal resolution.
    And on any of those machines, Mini, low-end iMac and low-end MacBook, will the Universal versions of the Adobe software that is critical to me overwhelm machine capabilities?
    Are there any other issues I should concern myself with? If I could hear from some graphics professionals, I would appreciate it. Thank you for your time.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    The first thing to say is that no new Intel Mac will allow you to use your existing OS 9 software. Not only will they not boot to OS 9 (as no Mac in recent years has been able to do) but they will not even run Classic and allow you use of that software in that environment.
    Thus, if you do not already have them, you will need OS X-compatible versions of all your software, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Word..... and at this time none are in Intel native format, meaning that while these applications will run, they'll run rather slowly in emulation.
    Leaving that issue aside (since your message indicates you have obviously already considered it), your concerns about the possibility of painting yourself into a corner with the mini platform are understandable, but really not well founded. To be sure, the lack of dedicated graphics board gives the appearance of poor probably display quality or capabilities, but it doesn't really work out that way. The Intel GMA 950 certainly has greater potential, for instance, than the graphics sub-system of your existing G3 iMac, and easily outperforms the graphics cards fitted to many late-model Macs, including the ATI chips in the PPC minis. It's Core Image compatible, thus can take advantage of Apple's display control software and technologies, and while it lags behind the dedicated cards in more expensive systems, it's primarily in games and intensive animations that it shows any weaknesses. Given that the software you use has been in widespread use by many users on Mac systems with older, less powerful graphics systems, I think it's plenty enough. If it were to be insufficient for your flight sims, then you'd have to look at the $1200 iMac instead, which would have the advantage of a 20" display and is a very credible system without doubt.
    Where other expansion is concerned, the idea of the mini is that unlike Powermac systems in the past, one simply hangs the extra bits on the outside, and thus imaging, storage and other needs can pretty much be handled by USB or FW components - even including faster hard drives for improved performance where needed.
    LCD screens are a bit of a more problematic area. There are many to choose from and some are better than others, but there's no doubt that some models do indeed offer good quality, and of course MacOS offers extensive calibration to ensure you get the best color match possible. It can take a bit of tinkering around with the settings in the color tab of the Display Preference pane, but it works. A DVI (digital) screen is generally better than a VGA one, and since prices of these have come down significantly in the last couple of years, good displays can be had even in the low end of the range.
    For myself, I would not generally consider a portable unless I were to need one for portability. It's not that there are too many compromises in order to get a viable laptop (after all, the mini is predominantly made of laptop-class components) but that there is a cost penalty involved in opting for a laptop system which is not present with the mini. Thus, if you need portability, your option is clearly for a laptop, but if you don't, I would say there is no benefit to having one, despite the extra cost involved.
    In terms of which desktop, there's not really a whole lot to choose between the mini and the base iMac. They both have integrated graphics, but the imac has a faster hard drive (7200 compared to 5400) and of course an integral screen. A mini with moderate LCD can be had for less. In neither instance would the Intel-native apps you'll need cause the system any problem. With the exception of Photoshop these are not really all that demanding on systems, and in Photoshop's case it's more a demand on CPU and drive space and throughput than on system performance overall, and tests of the Intel native beta of Photoshop from CS3 show that a mini runs it well.
    My choice in your situation (allowing for the software/OS compatibility concerns mentioned above) would be a 1.66 mini maxed out to 2Gb RAM with any one of a dozen low-cost LCD displays - which should still come in under the cost of the base iMac, and allow you to add a faster drive externally when funds or needs dictate. Given the need to perhaps 'future proof' yourself as much as possible however, if funds extend to it, the $1199 iMac would be a better long-term choice, though realistically even that would benefit from an increase to 2Gb - particularly if you are going to run any non-native software requiring emulation.

    Help please. I have finally purchased Apple TV and my Samsung TV shows No Signal when I plug everything in. Any suggestions?

    You may wish to try the following:
    Press and hold the menu and the up button simultaneously on the remote for six seconds, the Apple TV should then begin to cycle through the various resolutions available to it at 20 second intervals.. If you see a picture appear up on your screen, use the remote to scroll down to the OK option and select it.
    Do you have another TV you can try it with.

    Having tried the Quicken on the Mac, I much prefer using a spreadsheet. I know this is not a direct answer, though given the nature that spreadsheets offer nearly the same versatility if not more than Quicken, you might want to consider going that path instead.
    Many options exist on http://guide.apple.com/ http://www.versiontracker.com/ and http://www.macupdate.com/ that you might not be aware of.

  • IHC payment order finally posted but payment request not created

    Hello
    I created payment order in In house cash  IHC automatically from (intercompany) a vendor invoice using idoctype payext. I can see that the payment order in transaction IHC0 has been finally posted. But table PAYRQ is empty. In transaction BF11 application IHC_EP is unchecked; application IHC is CHECKED. Any clue how to get the payment request created?

    Hi
    There could be various possiblity that I would double-check.
    1. Is CM activated in your system? If so, it may be due to the fact that the planning level is not assigned to payment request -
    Financial supply chain Management > Cash and Liquidity Management  >Cash Management > Structuring > Groupings >  Define levels in payment requests
    2 Another possibility would be that External account number may not be identical
    Account management > Basic Setting: communication
    Set Up Creation of Payment Requests for Inbound IDoc in FI – Account details)
      External account numbers need to be IDENTICAL keys between IHC and FI within IHC company as a communication method.
    If none of the above is applicable, you may need to debug by reprocessing failed IDOC by BD64 by removing the account assignment in configuration  - Set Up Creation of Payment Requests for Inbound IDoc in FI > Posting Account
    Hope that this helps

  • Me2dp purchase order downpayment request amount error

    Dear All:
    I use the me2dp to monitoring the downpayment request of the purchase order.
    And  I finded a probelm
    I have create a downpayment request use me2dp, the amount is 200.
    The total of downpayment requests amoun is 200 if I run the me2dp report.
    Then I reverse the downpayment request use fb08.
    I thought the total of downpayment requests amoun should be 0.
    But the system show the total of downpayment requests amoun 400 in the me2dp report.
    Anyone help me?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    The system adds the Down Payment Request and the Down Payment together in that report. The Down Payment Request does not get cleared until you actually run the Payment Program. That will clear the Request.

  • "iPod Setup Assistant " request always pops up upon mounting mono 20gb ipod

    Just installed 30gb ipod & itunes update onto computer running Windows XP - no problems. I also have a 20gb mono on the same computer (updated itunes and ipod updater as well). Restarted computer. I signed on as the only one using the PC, launch itunes, mount the 20gb ipod. The system does nothing for about 20 secs. then the ipod is shown (as it always does). No problem adding songs to libary or transfering to ipod w/20 gb (except the inital delay). The problem is, behind the itune window a window pops up "iPod set up assistant" with the name of the ipod I just mounted. Window ask me if I want to auto sync my files (I click off the check mark - because I do not keep music on computer otherwise this would wipe my ipod clean). I cancel out, but each time I mount the ipod I get the same pop up "set up request". Any ideas what is going on and how to stop this (so that I some day do not make the mistake of hitting OK in place of cancel)?
    I have read the posting below but it falls short of answering my question.
    Thank you in advance.
    "How do I set up another iPod in iTunes when I already have an existing iPod/iTunes combo on my computer?"
    Answer:
    First things first, lets get your iPod up and running with the correct firmware:
    Begin by throwing away the disc that came with your iPod. The software on it is more than likely out of date anyway!
    Download the latest iPod firmware from HERE and install it on your computer (by double-clicking the installer icon).
    Go to Start > All Programs > iPod > iPod Updater > etc and run the updater application.
    When the pop-up box appears, connect your iPod and select the RESTORE option.
    When instructed, disconnect the iPod from the PC and connect it to the AC adapter to complete the process.
    OK, now you need to decide 'how' you want to manage your music. You have a couple of options:
    Using the existing iTunes installation on your PC
    If you want to use the same library and iTunes installation, then you can just re-connect the iPod to the computer via the USB or Firewire. iTunes will launch and ask you to register the iPod. To manage your music, you now have two further options. You could either:
    Use 'Auto-Synch' to transfer the entire music library and playlist selections to your iPod.
    OR
    Use the 'Manual Synch' option to manually drag and drop the songs and playlists that you want on to your iPod.
    OR
    Set up a 'Master' playlist which contains all the songs you like, and then set the iPod to automatically synch to that.
    Using a new iTunes installation (Requires windows XP)
    If you want to keep your new iPod music completely seperate from the original iTunes library, then you can install another instance of iTunes. To do this, you must:
    Create your own XP user profile.
    iTunes should be accessible using this log-in. If not, then download and install the latest version of iTunes. This can be obtained HERE. (Note: When swapping between User IDs, you should not use the 'Switch User' option. iTunes really doesn't like that!)
    Once the iTunes install has completed, you can begin adding your own music. Your music files will be automatically added the the newly created iTunes folder which can be found at C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music.
    If you want to keep all the music on the hard-drive in the same place (and minimise the possibility of having multiple versions of the same song everywhere), then you can change the settings in iTunes so that all music is derived from the same location. To do this, go to Edit > Preferences and select the 'Advanced' tab. You can then change the iTunes Music folder location to something like C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents\Shared Music.
    20gb mono wheel with 4 buttons at top   Windows XP

    To all of those who viewed question but did not have an answer the following is how I resolved my issue. FYI. In the end, although the "Setup..." window came up, it was in fact stating that I did not have the music file within my iTunes. How I resolved the issue was to first click OFF the check mark that advised me that iTunes would automatically update my songs. I did not change the name of my iPod (since it was the correct name). Clicked next and then Finish. This resulted in the window going away and the "Music Store" file appearing within iTunes. The "Setup..." box does not come back up.

  • In App Purchase Bug - SKProduct Request

    Hi,
    This time I am struggling with two very strange problems. The In App Purchase functionality seems buggy.
    Problem 1:
    The SKProductRequest works on one device (iOS version 4.02), but not on the other (iOS 4.2). None of the devices are jailbreaked, both are the same model (iPhone 4). The one on which the request is not working, just fails (but without crashing):
    - (void)request:(SKRequest *)request didFailWithError:(NSError *)error
    The SKProduct Request starts automatically with the application launch. But and if for any reason (e.g. a network timeout) the user is able to "update" the price list (=re-initiating the SKProduct request) If re-initiated, the app is crashing. The wired thing:
    Problem 2:
    The bug only appears, if the device is not connected to XCode while running. In other words, I am able to update the SKProduct Request as often as possible if the device is connected to XCode without any crash- the code seems to work. -> I am not able to trace any possible bug with the help of XCode, because the error does not appear on the device if it is connected..
    - (void) requestProductData {
    if(isFinishedProductRequest) {
    NSLog(@"request products for %@", identifierCash);
    self._request = [[SKProductsRequest alloc]
    initWithProductIdentifiers:
    [NSSet setWithObject: identifierCash]];
    _request.delegate = self;
    isFinishedProductRequest = FALSE;
    [_request start];
    - (void)requestDidFinish:(SKRequest *)request {
    NSLog(@"purchase request finished");
    isFinishedProductRequest = TRUE;
    if ( [cashServiceDelegate respondsToSelector:@selector(appleProductRequestDidFinish)]){
    [cashServiceDelegate appleProductRequestDidFinish];
    [self._request release];
    and the cash delegate
    - (void) appleProductRequestDidFinish {
    isFinishedAppleCashRequest = TRUE;
    if (applePaymentTransactionController.productsArray != nil && [applePaymentTransactionController.productsArray count] > 0) {
    SKProduct * product = [applePaymentTransactionController.productsArray objectAtIndex:0];
    NSLog(@"%@", [product localizedDescription]);
    price = [[product price] floatValue];
    priceLocale = [product priceLocale];
    if ([viewDelegate respondsToSelector:@selector(updatePrice)]){
    [viewDelegate performSelector:@selector(updatePrice)];
    }else {
    [self alertNoAppleProducts];
    if ([viewDelegate respondsToSelector:@selector(hideSmallLoadingView)]){
    [viewDelegate performSelector:@selector(hideSmallLoadingView)];
    I was also looking at the XCode Organizer Device Logs, but they were not really helpful. I will post them, when I will get the 2nd device where the SKProduct Request is working (on mine, its not)

    I could solve my two problems.
    1.
    To start in app purchase again on the one mobile, I just had to delete and reinstall the app. The simple thing This list was helpful http://troybrant.net/blog/2010/01/invalid-product-ids/
    2.
    The crash when re-calling the SKProductRequest was because i had to super-deallocs in my dealloc method. Sluttery.. - but I am confused why two super-deallocs are working when the app is running in XCode..

  • JSX in CS5 assistance request

    I have a javascript (coded by Dave Saunders) that has been of great benefit to me over the past few years. It has worked without changes with InDesign CS2, CS3, and CS4 (Mac and Windows). This helpful tool allows me to position an InDesign window where I want it on my screen. Next the script is run to create a default data file. Finally, when the script is run again, it repositions the active window to match the location of the window defined in the default data file.
    This morning, it will not run in InDesign CS5 (7.0.3). It merely beeps at me when I invoke the script via the script panel or the assigned KB shortcut.
    The script worked with CS5 pre-update (7.0.0).
