Finder hiding files with "..." in the file name?

One of my files is named with a "..." at the start, which seems to be hidden in the finder - I can see from the folder size that the file is in there but can't see it. Is there anyway I can change the file name on a hidden file?

Open the Script Editor or AppleScript Editor in one of the subfolders of Applications and run the following:
tell application "Finder" to quit
if (do shell script "defaults read com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles") is "1" then
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0"
else
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1"
end if
delay 2
tell application "Finder" to run
If you change your mind later, run the script again.

  • Consolidate Problem. Copying files failed. The File name was invalid.

    Hi to everyone,
    My system is 10.5.8, iTunes 9.2.1 (4)
    I tried to consolidate my iTunes library to an external HD. After about 100GB of copied music, I got the message : Copying files failed. The File name was invalid.
    Now everytime I try again to consolidate, I get immediately this message. I am looking everywhere for a solution, and I only find the same problem for Windows iTunes users.
    Actually I found very useful this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1708372,
    which talks about with which order iTunes consolidates the media, so by digging a little in the folders to find which track has the problem and make the fix. It says that consolidate start copy the files by the date added order. So I can go in my new iTunes media folder and find the latest added track, then go back in iTunes, sort by date added the songs and locate the next song, to make the fix. However in my case, all previous and next songs (by date added), have been copied in the new locations.
    I am stuck. I have a remaining 300GB of music to consolidate and dont know how to proceed.
    Any help would be much appreciated..

    Finaly, I managed to solve it by myself...,
    following the help I found from the post of the thread I mentioned on my question...
    What was the problem that made things more difficult in my case, is that a big amount of songs have been added at the same time, with just a few seconds time distance. So it was tougher to locate what was the last imported song, and where iTunes consolidation had stopped. Actually I had groups of about 100 songs with the same timestamp of date added and the consolidation was following the rule of the "date added" but not exactly with the order the songs was showing in the iTuned library. So I started checking all the songs very close to the last added in the media folder one by one with the "show in finder" command, and then I managed to found what was the one with the problem.
    Regarding the problematic file, that was a midi file that had been imported in my iTunes.
    I hope this will help anyone else that might have the same problem as me in the future.

  • My computer hard drive crashed but I have a HP Recovery Backup of it with all the files unzipped. How can I retrieve my emails from this backup on my new comput

    II lost my HP hard drive after doing a HP Recovery Backup using Windows 7. I now have a new computer using Windows 8.1 and I have successfully unzipped all my files including my Thunderbird and Firefox profiles,. I have installed Firefox and Thunderbird on the new computer but cannot figure out how to get my bookmarks (Firefox) or my emails (Thunderbird) off these old profiles. Just substituting the old profiles stops the applications from opening and obviously I did not create these using the application export facility. Can the application be fooled by renaming the file with the name of the new profile? or is there some internal code that the program checks. I'm totally at a loss.

    The Profile names have to match what Firefox and Thunderbird is expecting to find. Any difference and they may not start, or they may just create a new Profile ''as they are supposed to when the expected Profile is "gone".''
    You can rename the old Profiles to the names of the new Profiles; or you can carefully edit the profiles.ini file to match the Profile names of the old Profiles. ''One mistake and it's toast, though.''
    But IMO, the best thing to do is to go to the folder level where the '''profiles.ini''' file and the '''profiles''' folderset is located --
    '''%APPDATA%/Mozilla/Firefox/ '''
    where you should find '''profiles.ini''' and the '''Profiles''' folder, ''and maybe other files / folders''
    Copy that whole '''Firefox''' folder from the old installation over to the new one.
    With Thunderbird that should work the same as it is based upon the basics in Firefox, but I have never used Thunderbird.

  • Map with 500 pdfs. How to make a new file with only the first pages, new file with second pages etc.

    Hi,
    A client confronted me with the next question:
    I have a map with 500 pdf's in it.
    Is it possible to make a new file with only the first page of each pdf?
    After that to make a new file with only the second page of each pdf?
    And after that the third?
    Etc.
    Is that possible with an action?
    Or are there scripts for?
    I couldn't find them.
    I use an iMac with Acrobat XI.
    Any help is very welcome.
    Thanks in advance.
    Bornholm

    You can extract each page from each pdf as a seperate page.     Once this is done you can select the pages tocombine.
    You would have to write custom a custom JavaScript and programatically code the names to combine if the extracted file pages habvestandars naming that could  be programed. There maybe some security  coding you will have to do because of Adobe restrictions but this all documented in the Acrobat JavaScript Reference.

  • ITunes v10.6.1.7 "Copying files failed. The File name was invalid or too long."

    I'm trying to organize my music files using iTunes 10.6.1.7 and I keep getting the error message "Copying files failed. The File name was invalid or too long."
    I've got music folders by artist in both the iTunes Music folder and the iTunes Media/Music folder. When I add certain files by drag/drop they sometimes get lost and I don't want that to happen anymore. I used to just consolidate my music files using the File/Library/Organize Library option and that worked, however now when I do that, I get the error message.
    I'm a novice and the only online stuff I see is both confusing and refers to earlier versions of iTunes.
    My concern is that I have heard that people lose entire libraries of their music when they trry to fix things like this and I don't want that. If this is of any importance, I have several files called iTunes library and temp library. I have no idea what that all means but I'm scared to death of it.
    Also, I can't get to the "re-organize library" link at all. It won't let me.
    One thing that be of some interest is that when I pull up the properties of the music and media/music files they are marked "read only" I'm also afraid to touch that!
    Please help and please know that I am a dummy. Be kind and be clear. Step by step would be great, with images even better. Thanks.

    You can choose to *Consolidate selected tracks* with a right-click menu. Perhaps if you can identify a specific track that won't consolidate and examine the full path to the file & the path that iTunes would create when it consolidates the problem might become apparent. For example iTunes may not be able to move files if the source or destination path length exceeds 255 characters.

  • Importing CD to Artist folder\Album folder\file with track number and name:

    I have a problem then importing my cd’s to my harddisk using iTunes.
    On my previous pc I got what I want, Artist folder, Album folder and file with track number and name:
    e.g.
    D:\My Music\B.B. King\Blues On The Bayou\01 Blues Boys Tune.mp3
    D:\My Music\B.B. King\Blues On The Bayou\02 Bad Case Of Love.mp3
    D:\My Music\B.B. King\Blues On The Bayou\03 I'll Survive.mp3
    But now I get:
    D:\My Music\Compilations\Blues On The Bayou\01 Blues Boys Tune.mp3
    D:\My Music\ Compilations \02 Bad Case Of Love.mp3
    D:\My Music\ Compilations \03 I'll Survive.mp3
    In iTunes my settings are Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced: iTunes Music folder: D:\My Music and checkmark in both: “Keep iTunes Music folder organized” and “Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library”.
    My version of iTunes is 8.0.1.11
    Thanks in advance
    Peter

    It will depend on the album. Gracenote considers anthologies, a collection of tracks by the same artist taken from different albums, as a compilation. In iTunes the compliation setting should really only be applied to a collection of tracks by different artists.

  • HT1751 Consolidating files failed.  The file name was invalid or too long.  How to trouble shoot this?

    I am trying to move my iTunes library from old XP PC to Windows 7 PC, using an external hard drive.  Using tutorial and signed in as administrator.  Trying to consolidate my library and receive error message " Copying files fail. The file name was invalid or too long".    Don't know what to do as next step.   The library is sitting on the hard drive under the Administrator ID (My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music).
    Any thoughts?

    You can select a group of tracks and consolidate from the right-click context menu. You coud try consolidating in batches, say all songs by artists beginning with A, then B, etc, then the other media types, until you can isolate a problem track and then try moving that by hand and fixing the broken link.
    I also have two scripts that could help you, Unconsolidated and ConsolidateByMoving. The first can make a playlist of all unconsolidated tracks, the second can consolidate a selection of tracks by moving them instead of copying.

  • Cannot open a a file with a specific file name

    I have 1 person who cannot open or save a file with a specific file name on his computer.  If he does it at another computer he is fine, no one else has this issue.  The error he gets when trying to open the file is { Cannot create file:missingperson.pdf. Right-click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder}
    Any ideas on how to resove this.  He gets this file sent to him on a regular basis, and cannot have the file name changed.
    Thank you

    I have run across something similar.  Assuming that this PDF they are getting through email is the same name, then this is how I fixed my problem.
    When you get a file in an email and open it, it writes that file to the Temporary Internet Files folder.  Lets assume the file name is filename.pdf  If you open a file from email with the same name at a later time, it creates a file called filename(1).pdf.  Open a file with the same name again, it creates filename(2).pdf, and so on.  Once you get to filename(99).pdf, it will start giving you a lot of trouble.  When I cleared out those filename.pdf's, everything went back to normal.
    Hope this helps.

  • Zip.ZipInputStream cannot extract files with Chinese chars in name

    Dear friends,
    Peace b upon u!
    I am trying to read a zip file (~3000 files)containing one
    or more files with Chinese, Japanese or Korean names, the
    getNextEntry method throws an IllegalArgumentException as below after extracting just ~300 files as below:-
    java.lang.IllegalArgumentException
            at java.util.zip.ZipInputStream.getUTF8String(Unknown Source)
            at java.util.zip.ZipInputStream.readLOC(Unknown Source)
            at java.util.zip.ZipInputStream.getNextEntry(Unknown Source)
            at testZipFiles.getZipFiles(testZipFiles.java:65)
            at testZipFiles.main(testZipFiles.java:18) issue:java.util.zip.ZipInputStream cannot extract files with Chinese chars in name
    Category java:classes_util_jarzip
    Plz let me know 1 of the ways which I can solve this issue.
    1)if someone has JAVA DCOMPILER plz send the SOURCE Code
    for the ZipInputStream.class to me..I need to edit it using 1 of the solutions as provided below which I googled.
    2)If there is an alternate or upgraded java.util.zip.ZipInputStream or any org.apache.tools.zip.* package which can read such files..If yes where I can download the same on net.
    3)Any other easier solution, which can let me extract all files (by excluding Chinese files thru CATCH) without the extractor process to fail altogether.
    On net I found that the only solution with this is:-
    - edit the new ZipEntry, remove the static initializer that calls
    the native methods initIDs().
    this step seems a bit scary, but it's according to the
    workaround
    to bug #4244499 (the workaround of Olive64, THU JUN 05
    01:55 P.M. 2003),
    that handles a similar bug at the ZipOutputStream.
    Now you have a ZipInputStream that supports multi-bytes
    entry names.
    to extract the zip file, using the fixed code that is offered
    above,
    create a function that gets an "encoding" string, a "destPath"
    string
    and a "sourceFile" (zipped) and does :
    ZipInputStream zipinputstream = null;
    ZipEntry zipentry;
    zipinputstream = new ZipInputStream(new FileInputStream
    (sourceFile),encoding);
    zipentry = zipinputstream.getNextEntry();
    while (zipentry != null) { //for each entry to be extracted
        String entryName = zipentry.getName();
        int n;
        FileOutputStream fileoutputstream = new FileOutputStream
    ( destPath + entryName );
        while ((n = zipinputstream.read(buf, 0, 1024)) > -1)
            fileoutputstream.write(buf, 0, n);
        fileoutputstream.close();
        zipinputstream.closeEntry();
        zipentry = zipinputstream.getNextEntry();
    }//while
    zipinputstream.close();

    Hi friend,
    We'd better to ask one question in each thread. If you have another issue, you can consider to open up a new thread in this forum.
    Now for the first question, do you mean this picture? It throws access exception in archive2.
    If so , because your extractPath is a path, not a directory.You should add +"xxx.zip". For more information, please refer to
    ZipFile.Open
    Method (String, ZipArchiveMode).
    For the second question, you can use the following code to skip the error message.
    while (true)
    try
    //do something;
    catch (Exception ex)
    { continue; }
    Good day!

  • Has anyone been able to upload an ibooks file with audio only files (m4a) in it? I keep getting the following error message during the upload in iTunes Producer: ERROR ITMS-9000: "Files of type audio/x-m4a are not allowed outside of widgets.

    Has anyone been able to upload an ibooks file with audio only files (m4a) in it? I keep getting the following error message during the upload in iTunes Producer: ERROR ITMS-9000: "Files of type audio/x-m4a are not allowed outside of widgets. then it names the file as an m4p file. Everything works beautifully on the iPad through Preview, and validates through iTunes Producer up until the attempted upload. If you've been able to accomplish this, please let me know how you prepared your audio files. Many thanks.

    Hello Fellow iBook Authors!
    Today I received the same error that you all have been discussing.  I tried selecting the DRM
    and this did not work for me, though I'm glad it did for some.  Here's what I did as a work-around. . .
    Since iBooks Author did not have a problem with Videos, I simply used one of my video programs, ScreenFlow to turn the audio into a video file m4v.  I added an image and extended the length or timing of the image to span the length of the audio file.  Then exported as an .mov.  I then opened QuickTime and opened the file and exported the file to iTunes.
    You can use iMovie, Camtasia or any other progam that will allow you to export the audio as a movie file.  Does this make sense?  I hope this helps, at least in the short-term.

  • How to find where iWeb is saving the files?

    greetings.
    i used iweb last year to make a couple web pages... i normally just edit html directly and don't use this kind of software... i cannot find where it is saving the pages i've updated... the location in ~/Site that has the files from last year do not appear to be updating when saving... the changes are getting saved somewhere because the changes are still there after quitting and restarting iweb... the standard way i use to find where a program is saving the file is to command+click on the title bar to see what path it is saving the file... that doesn't work in iweb...
    i edit my files locally on my HD... then when everything is ok, i copy them up to our server... since i cannot find where iweb is saving the files, i can't copy them to the server... i really don't like software that gets in the way of just doing the work or hides everything... :-\
    i did a quick search of the manual and this list and didn't find anything on this topic...
    thanks for any suggestions-
    jeffery
    ps: also how does one get rid of that ANNOYING "try mobilme for free" splash screen when starting the program each time? it's enough to make me want to just delete everything and recode it by hand... certainly less annoying and possibly even faster... :-[ sorry for being so cranky-

    There is absolutely nothing wrong with iWeb at all. You just need to learn how to use it and what it does and how it publishes that is all.
    You just need to know that if you want to update, then you need the domain files and where they are stored and know that iWeb cannot import and that it creates html files on publishing and publishing to a folder will create these. If you wish to make alterations to these files, then you can easily do so with an html editor and then upload directly to your web server.
    As with anything, if you learn what it does and how to use it effectively, you can make it work very well for you.

    THis is safe for Mac's? Sorry, I have just never heard of this site before.
    And there are literally tens of thousands of sites of which I've not heard, too. Not this one.
    It's legit. There are lots of links in Apple Support Communities to the LibreOffice web site, as well as others that are legitimate open-source developers of options to buying MS Office, such as NeoOffice and OpenOffice. I have Open Office installed on one of my older Macs that can't run Office 2011 and it is rock-solid.
    I've been here too long to start posting bogus urls now.

    BUMP
    Yes, I just get that message. I don't see how I could investigate this problem.
    I didn't mention that this happened when I was consolidating my library, not copying files to another computer.
    In other words, I'm using a "normal" itunes procedure, itunes won't complete it, and won't tell me exactly why or how to figure out how to fix it...
    Is there at least some easy way to tell which files were successfully copied to my itunes music folder so I can work on moving the uncopied files?
    Can anybody help me?

  • I had all my iTunes music backed up onto a hard drive; but the hard drive was stolen along with all the files I backed up onto it. However, the songs I had in iTunes still show up (I just can't play them.) Would it let me get them back?

    I had all my iTunes music backed up onto a hard drive; but the hard drive was stolen along with all the files I backed up onto it. However, the songs I had in iTunes still show up (I just can't play them.) If I were to use iCloud, would it still take those songs and let me listen to them (and maybe re-download them?) Or am I out of luck?

    Open iTunes, go to the iTunes Store, and then go to Purchased on the right hand side under Music Quick Links.
    You can re-download all the songs, apps, or books you have previously purchased.
    I'm not sure if this is a requirement, but just in case, make sure you download the latest version of iTunes (v10.3) too.
