Finder won't open??? All other applications seem to be working.

Finder was running very slow, usually a restart will remedy this. After a restart my desk top is completely empty. No folders, no disks. I can find files from spotlight. I can open applications. Verified and repaired all disks. I can't move anything to the trash from spotlight. I'm thinking software restore but not enough room on disk.

"I checked my disk space via disk utility it say's there is a gig and a half free."
If you only have 1.5 GB of available space on the Hard Drive, you are courting disaster.
Insufficient available space, can cause system corruption, and possible data loss.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.
Back up the system, and free up some space ASAP!
Review the suggestions, in the documents that I have linked to below.

Is the Mac shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
Have you ever run any routine Maintenance procedures?
If you turn the PowerBook off nightly, the Background Maintenance Tasks, are never run.
These can also be run, using a Third-Party utility, or manually using Terminal, to run the CRON Commands.
I use MacJanitor, when necessary.
INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
At the prompt, type:
sudo periodic daily
Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
Repeat again, with command:
sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, which is preferable, with this command:
sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.
Restart the Mac, and run Repair Permissions.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

I keep getting an error when trying to download a tv series right on my iPad from the iTunes store. I am able to download on my laptop then synchronize but it's a hassle specially if my laptop is not with me. All other Apps seem to be working fine. Help!

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • I just moved to iCloud and now my email is not working on my non compatible MacBook, but all other devices seem to be working.

I have several Apple products, some eligible for iCloud and some not.  I was using MobileMe and elected to keep my email address after June 30.  I moved to iCloud and everything seems to be working except for my MacBook that couldn't be upgraded to Lion so not eligible for iCloud.  Now my email doesn't work on that machine.  What's wrong?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Delete your mail account from Mail preferences and set it up again using the Mail Server Information.
Some users have apparently encountered issues using this information in pre-Lion set ups (I haven't), Roger Wilmut has kindly provided instructions for those who find themselves with this problem.

After installing reader 9 sucessfully on the imac it won't open and doesn't seem to be there. I do have 5 installed but it won't work on new files. mac 10.6.8.Help.

Can you see Reader 9 inside Applications folder? If yes, then launch Reader and then try to open any pdf via File->Open or drag drop on Reader icon in the doc.
In case you dont find Reader 9 in your Applications folder then you can download and install the latest Reader from the following link: http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

  • PDF Files on desktop won;t open all the way. 11.07 won't download with Maverick 11.06

I have Maverick 11.0.6.  It quit downloading 11.07 half way through.  Also, some PDF files on my desktop won;t open all the way.  Still show the logo. What is going on?

The Installer that you had downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5786 is the 11.0.07 patch update for Reader XI. It shows the dialog "choose the copy of Adobe Reader to update" under following scenarios:
    1. When it finds more than one copy of Adobe Reader installed on a system. In this case, You need to choose the application that you use, like browse to Applications directory and choose Adobe Reader if that is the location from where you use the application.
    2. When the installer didn't find any copy of Adobe Reader installed on a system which it needs to update. In this case, you may install Adobe Reader XI version 11.0.07 directly from here get.adobe.com/reader/ from the same machine you intend to use it on.
Please let us know if any of the above suggestion resolved your problem.

  • Adobe Software windows override all other applications.

Adobe Software windows override all other applications. - Anyone have this issue with CS4 and Leopard?
For example: Whenever I'm opening multiple documents in, say, Illustrator CS4, while the windows are opening in the "background" and I'm attempting to surf the web with Firefox, each time a subsequent file is opened in the Adobe application, the Adobe application shifts to the front and whatever other application I was using shifts to the background. It may sound trivial but this is really quite annoying and time-consuming to have to constantly shift back and forth.
I'm not sure if this is an Adobe or Apple issue, but I'm really finding too many quirks and conflicts between CS4 and Leopard that weren't issues in older versions of either companies previous software (say, CS3 or CS2 and Tiger).

This is for CS4 since CS4 changed it's document management scheme. I've done a little experiment, not extensive but enough to have an idea.
In Illustrator, if you have the 'Open Documents As Tabs' checked (Preferences-->User Interface), it seems to work as it should. This is true if you have the Application Frame on and off. If the Tab preference is off, what you experienced in your post is what happens. This is also true if you have the Application Frame on and off.
Photoshop is a bit different. If the Application Frame is on, the documents open as you would expect regardless if you are using the Tabbed function. With the Application Frame off, opening documents work like you want it to only if you are using the 'Open Documents As Tabs' checked (Preferences-->Interface)
That is just my experiment. If you could, replicate what I have done let me know. I would like to know if this behavior is replicable.
I don't know if this is an Apple or Adobe issue because different applications behave differently. I tried another experiment: opening the same documents (opened in PS and AI) in Apple apps and other apps. If I open the docs in any Apple app (that I have), they exhibit a behavior that would expect, opens in the background. If I open docs in non-Apple apps, they exhibit different behaviors, ie Graphic Converter shows you that it is opening the document by showing the outline of the window in Genie Effect but does not actually show the window contents, and they open in the background.
    Weird...

This problem has been reported a few times. The solution is to install any new App say a free one. This seems to fix whatever has gone wrong.

    Hey sjboger,
If your iPhoto application will not launch on your MacBook Pro, it is possible that your iPhoto library may have become unusable. You may be able to rebuild this library by using the steps in this article -

  • Help! Finder won't open in Lion

I just upgraded to Lion- yes, I'm a late adopter- and now, my "Finder" won't open in the dock.  I have repaired permissions, and I can "work around it" by clicking on my apple logo and doing a force quit on finder.  After I do, the dock icon will work.  However, if I then reboot, I'm back to square one.
Can anyone give a not-so-tech-savvy user detailed instructions on how to fix what seems to be an issue that other had as far back as late 2011?
    My specs are
    MacBook Pro
    Lion 10.7.4
    2.4 Ghz Intel Core duo
    Thanks is advance.

I wanted those who are interested to know what ultimately solved my problem.  I found this solution by doing an internet search; it may or may not have appeared eldewhere on this forum, but so far, this worked for me.
    1.  Start the computer in safe mode, by holding down the shift key when the grey screen appears, and letting it go when the gear appears underneath the Apple logo
    2.  Open Finder; it should work.  Click on a file or two.
    3.  Shut down the computer
    4.  Restart as normal
    5.  Click on finder; it should open.
I don't know why this works; others hypothesized that a corrupt file is fixed or deleted while in safe mode.  I don't know and don't care.  I just hope the fix holds.

    Hi Terence,
I got your note and was able to complete the first part, but when I came to Finder, Go To Folder and I typed in both     /var/db/receipts/    and /private/var/db/receipts all I get is NOT FOUND message.  I tried several times, but no luck.
    Please advise.
    Thank you.

  • Whenever I launch a new Google window, Google immediately re-opens all other windows I happen to have open but minimized. I then have to either close or re-minimize each window, one at a time. What a pain!!

Whenever I launch a new Google window, Google immediately re-opens all other windows I happen to have open but minimized. I then have to either close or re-minimize each window, one at a time. What a pain!!

Just to address the last point: check your History menu to see whether you have the Restore Previous Session option and use that if you can. If that is grayed out or doesn't restore everything, check the Recently Closed Windows and Recently Closed Tabs lists for other pages.
The unwanted window may be generated by an add-on. Try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Any improvement?
Here are some other things to check:
    (1) user.js file that changes Firefox startup behavior and overrides your preferences. This article describes how to track that down and delete it if you have one: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
    (2) Possible hijacked shortcut. Check the "target" of the desktop icon you use to start Firefox to see whether it lists the unwanted page. To do that:
right-click the icon > Properties > Shortcut tab
For 64-bit Windows 7, the Target should be no more and no less than this:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
    (3) Possible undisclosed bundle items. If you have installed any free software recently, check your Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a program for surprises. If you click the "Installed on" column head to group by date, it is easier to spot bundled junk. Remove everything suspicious or unrecognized.
    (4) Supplemental clean up scans. Our support article lists tools other Firefox users have found helpful: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
    Hopefully that cures it.
